Dorsey Howes J. Dorsey Howes, 87, of Boyce, Va. and formerly of Germantown, died Sunday at Rose Hill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Berryville, Va. He was the husband of 54 years of Jane Bell Howes, who died in February 1995. Born July 28, 1914 at the family farm in Germantown, he was a son of the late Joseph Green and Ivy Catherine King Howes. Mr. Howes was a graduate of Gaithersburg High School and was a member of the 4-H Club. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a manager of Wayne Food & Supply in Gaithersburg and later worked as a sales manager for Reed Brothers Dodge in Rockville. He was a member of the Gaithersburg Lions Club and a life member of the Montgomery County Agricultural Center. He was an avid bowler and loved to dance. Survivors include three daughters, Linda J. Howes of Boyce, Va., Barbara Goldizen of Stephenson, Va., and Claire Elliott of Boswell, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. His sister, Catherine G. Clagett, preceded Mr. Howes in death. Friends may call Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the Olin L. Molesworth P.A. Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Oak Cemetery, Gaithersburg. Nikita Botkin Nikita Botkin, 75, of Randolph, Maine, died Oct. 15 at the Maine General Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch in Augusta, Maine. Mr. Botkin was born Jan. 8, 1926 in Antibes, France, the son of Gleb and Nadine Konshin Botkin. He was the grandson of the personal physician to the family of Russian Tsar Nicholas II. The Bolsheviks killed his grandfather in 1918, along with members of the Tsar's Family. Nikita's father escaped across Siberia and was rescued by the Japanese. Nikita Botkin's family settled on Long Island, N.Y., where he attended school through high school. Mr. Botkin served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked in advertising for McGraw-Hill in New York City and in local government for Montgomery County until his retirement in 1977. In Montgomery County, he was the head of the county's Division of Printing and Mail Services. Mr. Botkin moved to Rockville in 1950 and volunteered with the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department. Following his retirement from Montgomery County government, he moved to Gaithersburg where he lived for many years. Mr. Botkin moved to Randolph, Maine in 1989 where he was active in community affairs. Mr. Botkin is survived by his wife of 23 years, Ruth Botkin of Randolph; four children, Clinton Botkin of Damascus, Kris Cox of Williamsburg, Va., Sandra Holcomb of Damascus and Theresa Kendall of Gaithersburg; three step children John Norris of Mount Airy, Jeanne Norris of Germantown, Jim Norris of Boyds; five grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 2 great grandsons; two sisters, Kyra Botkin of Augusta, Maine and Marina Schweitzer of Great Falls, Va. A memorial service was held Oct. 20 in Maine. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Hospice Volunteers of Kennebec Valley or to the Randolph Fire Department. Ethel B. Douglas Ethel Bayne Douglas, 83, of Montgomery Village, formerly of Wheaton, died Oct. 29, 2001. She was the wife of the late William G. Douglas, who died in January 1991. Born Jan. 4, 1918, in Sparrows Point, she was the daughter of William and Estella Bayne. Mrs. Douglas was a member of the Wheaton Presbyterian Church, where she served as the church secretary for 17 years from 1956 to 1973. After her retirement, she volunteered her time for Meals on Wheels and knitted hundreds of caps for infants through the Care Wear Program. Mrs. Bayne is survived by two children, Kathleen Blosser of Rockville and Michael Douglas of Adamstown; three grandchildren, Terry Blosser and Robert and Christine Douglas. Pursuant to her wishes she donated her body to the Maryland State Board of Anatomy, a teaching facility at John Hopkins to train future doctors. Hall Donald Martin Hall, 42, formerly of Gaithersburg and Frederick, died Oct. 14, 2001, at his home in Batesville, Miss., of heart failure. Born Nov. 12, 1958, in Newport, R.I., he was the son of Lucille Martin Hall of Batesville and Robert A. Hall of Bonita Springs, Fla. A long time resident of Gaithersburg, Mr. Hall was an active member of the Whetstone/Montgomery Village swim teams. In 1971 he attended the U.S. Junior Olympic Swim Meet in Colorado Springs, Col., representing the Montgomery County Swim League. Prior to his move south in the early 1990s, Mr. Hall lived in the Frederick area and was a professional union member painter in the Washington, D.C. area. Surviving besides his parents are one sister, Cilyne H. Pickana of Colerain, Ohio; a grandmother, Lealon R. Martin, formerly of Chevy Chase; a niece, Nicole B. Young; and a nephew, Benjamin H. Burt. A family service was held in Dickens Funeral Home Chapel, Batesville. Burial was in the Martin family plot at Hazelhurst City Cemetery, Mississippi. She was the wife of the late Harry Winfield Katen. Born Aug. 1, 1909, in Louisville, Ken., she was the daughter of the late John and Martha Spalls Simpson. She is survived by five children, Roy Calloway, Melvin Calloway and Rick Calloway, all of Rockville, Thelma Twigg of Damascus and Dorothy Sutton of North Carolina; 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and eight great-great- grandchildren; and special friends Mary and JoAnn Akers of Frederick. She was predeceased by son Billy Calloway and daughter Charlotte Calloway. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home in Damascus. Burial will be in Laytonsville Cemetery. Arthur Irving Sager Arthur Irving Sager, 85, of Silver Spring died Oct. 29, 2001. He was a retired civilian logistics officer who served as chief of the Logistics Data Management Division, Army Material Command. Mr. Sager was a charter member of Shaare Tefila Synagogue, serving as a trustee and first chairman of the Education Committee. He was also a member of Temple Israel, Kehilat Shalom and B'nai Shalom of Olney. He was an active member of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA and served as its Regional Commander. He held the Jewish Community Center Symphony Orchestra's first violinist chair and served as its personnel manager for strings. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Sager attended Brooklyn College and then moved to Washington, D.C. where he was employed as computer specialist by the former Office of the Quartermaster General. During World War II, Mr. Sager was awarded the Bronze Star. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Arlene Norman, Perkins and Suzanne (Eugene) Newman; four grandchildren, Shari (Joseph) Austin, Robert (Lisa) Perkins, Alec Newman, and Jodi (Allan) Sabol; two great-grandchildren, and a sister, Rose (Nathan) Gurvis. Arrangements were provided by Danzansky-Goldberg Memorial Chapels, Rockville. *****Nov. 14, 2001***** May Elizabeth King May "Mom Mom" Elizabeth King, 80, of Germantown, died Thursday at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. She was the wife of the late Howard W. King for 26 years. Born May 17, 1921 in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Bessie Summers Carter. Throughout her life, Mrs. King was a painter, a Montgomery County Health Department clinic wagon driver and a loving mother and homemaker. In addition to raising her children, she raised two granddaughters upon the death of her daughter. She also played a predominant role in raising several great-grandchildren. Mrs. King was an active member of the Moose Chapter 156 since 1975. She enjoyed baking, traveling and playing cards. She is survived by five daughters, Janice Cole of Damascus, Sherri Marsh of Germantown, Eleanor Collins of Chincoteaque, Va., Joanne King of Virginia Beach, Va., and Janet Lee Woodley of Texas; five sons, Norman Lowe of Millsborough, Del., Leroy Lowe of Fla., James Swecker of West Virginia, John Swecker of Missouri and Jay Swecker of Tenn.; one brother, James Carter of San Antonio, Texas; 31 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great grandchildren. Mrs. King was predeceased by one daughter, Jacqueline Lowe Christian; one son, Lawrence Lowe; a sister, May Shamer; and brothers, Joe Carter and Charles "Buck" Carter Jr. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Barnesville Baptist Church, 17917 Barnesville Road, Barnesville. Burial was is Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick. Pauline E. Cavanaugh Mrs. Pauline Evelyn Cavanaugh, 73, of Laytonsville, died Nov. 7, 2001, at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. She was the wife of James J. Cavanaugh. Born Dec. 28, 1927, in Great Falls, Mont., she was the daughter of the late Michael and Anna Seback Grdich. Mrs. Cavanaugh was a nurse. She was a member of Saint Paul's Catholic Church in Damascus and a member of the Catholic Daughters. Surviving besides her husband are three children, Maureen Cavanaugh and Kevin Cavanaugh, both of Pocatello, Idaho, and Tom Cavanaugh of Branchburg, N.J. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Karabra and Irene Wynn. A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 9250 Damascus Road, Damascus. Irvin White Retired Major Irvin White, 83, of Gaithersburg died Oct. 30, 2001, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Collierstown, Va., and was the husband of Nellie White. Mr. White was educated in the public schools of Charleston, W. Va., and served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1961. He retired from the Army in 1961 after 20 years of service in Italy, Japan, Korea and the United States. Surviving besides his wife of 57 years are two sons, Denis White of Poolesville and Mark White of Gaithersburg; three daughters, Selena, Evelyn and Teresa White of Gaithersburg; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Graveside services with full military honors were held at 9 a.m. today at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Snowden Funeral Home. Virginia E. Pearlmutter Virginia England Pearlmutter, 87, a Rockville native, died Nov. 10 of cancer. She was born Dec. 8, 1913, in a home on the corner of North Washington Street, where her father, Harrison L. England, land developer of old Rockville, had been born. She was the granddaughter of John G. England, mayor of Rockville in 1894, and a descendent of Gen. Jeremiah Crabb, who served under Gen. George Washington. Ms. Pearlmutter received numerous awards as a secretary for the Atomic Energy Commission during the early development and advancement of the space program. She retired in 1968 from the federal government, moved to Sarasota, Fla., and traveled extensively around Europe and the Orient. She was worthy matron of the Rockville chapter of the Eastern Star in 1957, and was presented a 50-year membership certificate in 2000. She was a lifetime member of Chi Sigma Sorority, having joined in Washington, D.C., in 1929. She is survived by her two daughters, Dorothy M. Rieck of Rockville and Virginia L. Tarquinto, of Conway, S.C.; one sister, Elsie E. Shartzer of Rockville; and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church, 109 S. Washington St. in Rockville. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church at the above address. Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home in Rockville handled the arrangements. William H. Thomas Jr. William H. Thomas Jr., 81, of Milton, Del., a former teacher at Robert E. Peary High School in Aspen Hill, died Nov. 8 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born in Ottumwa, Iowa, he was the son of the late William H. Thomas and Helen Redburn Thomas. Mr. Thomas retired in 1979 after 30 years as a teacher at Peary High School. He had also worked part-time for the A & P markets for 30 years in Aspen Hill. He was a member of the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 in Lewes, Del., a volunteer for the Beebe Medical Center for over 15 years, a member of the American Legion in Rockville, and was a U.S. Navy OSS veteran. He graduated from Ottumwa High School and attended the University of Iowa before entering the U.S. Navy. He received his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Maryland and his master's degree in education from George Washington University. While at Peary High, Mr. Thomas was a sponsor of the Key club and the pom squad and was a referee for high school sporting events. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Ann Metzger Thomas; four daughters, Patricia M. Thomas of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Nancy T. Carman of Gaithersburg, Jane C. Miller of Ashburn, Va., and Susan E. Thomas of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one step- daughter, Sandra A. Aylward, of Dover, Del.; and four grandchildren. Mr. Thomas was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley L. Thomas, in 1988. Bryan, 58, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Wheaton, died Nov. 1 at Shady Grove Nursing Home. He is survived by two daughters, Lori B. Atwood and Bonnie L. Buxton Roscoe F. Buxton, 85, of Damascus, died Nov. 7 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Allie May Moxley Buxton. Born May 6, 1916 near Kemptown, he was a son of the late Walter B. and Ella Brown Buxton. Mr. Buxton grew up on a farm near Kemptown and attended day school on Penn Shop Road through seventh grade. He entered Mount Airy High School in the fall of 1929 and graduated in 1933. While there he was active in baseball and soccer on the varsity teams. During his senior year he participated in an all-senior baseball team which beat all other Carroll County teams. After high school he worked on the family farm for about a year and also played baseball for the Tri-County League as pitcher for the Damascus team. At 17, he was the youngest player, with most members being at least 25 or 26 years of age. In 1935 he began his first job with Safeway, which was then known as "The Sanitary." He worked there for four years. He was married to the former Allie May Moxley in 1939 and began working for the FBI as a fingerprinting specialist. After that he worked for Hyatt Building Supply until he began his own lumber company, Ridgeville Building Supply, which he operated for 10 years. Later, he was employed by the Montgomery County Department of Corrections. He served there as chief of custody and security with the rank of captain until he retired in July 1977. It was during this time that he received an associate's degree from the University of Maryland in criminal justice. Mr. Buxton served for eight years as a director of the Bank of Damascus. He also served for three years on the advisory board for Citizens Bank. He was an active church member, serving as a teacher, Sunday school superintendent, steward, treasurer for the Kemptown charge, and treasurer for Montgomery Church. Surviving besides his wife are one son, Stephen Buxton, and one daughter, Barbara B. Beall and her husband David, both of Damascus; two grandchildren, J. Michael Beall of Frederick and Julia Foster of Damascus; four great- grandchildren, Michael Meadows, Kristofer Beall, Victoria Markham and Kyle Markham; one sister, Ada Mae Beacht of Gaithersburg; and one brother, Roger Buxton of Mount Airy. One sister, Lucy Mullineaux, predeceased Mr. Buxton. Services were held Nov. 13. Burial was at Montgomery United Methodist Cemetery in Damascus. Miller, 76, of Derwood, died Nov. 18, 2001, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born Jan. 30, 1925, in Orange, N.J., he was a son of the late Charles Gerard and Elsie Schlager Miller. He was the husband of Anne C. Miller. He is also survived by four children, Daniel S. Miller of Connecticut, Nancy C. Ouimette of Connecticut, Susan C. Lakomy of Westminster and Paul G. Miller of Potomac Mills, Va.; and five grandchildren. Mr. Miller served in the Air Force in World War II and was stationed in Burma. He received a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1961 in statistics. He worked as a statistical meteorologist for the National Weather Service for about 25 years and retried in 1991. He received a bronze metal from the Department of the Air Force in 1983 in recognition of outstanding performance of duty as Chief Scientist -- Air Weather Service. Mr. Miller was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 4101 Norbeck Road, Rockville. He was the father of Veronica Pruitt and her husband, Ron, Russell Douglas Pipkin, Vivienne Simmons and her husband; Scott; and grandfather of Katlyn and Kristin Simmons. A funeral service was held Nov. 20 at Gasch's Funeral Home. Burial was at the Washington National Cemetery in Suitland. Kathryn F. Paulhus Kathryn F. Paulhus, 85, of Derwood, died Nov. 19 at her home. Born Dec. 20, 1915, in Monson, Mass., she was a daughter of the late John and Barbara Swartz. She was the wife of the late Norman G. Paulhus. Survivors include two children, Norman G. Paulhus Jr. of Derwood and Kathryn Anne Fain and her husband Christopher of Rockville; and one sister, Helynn Haley of Monson, Mass. Mrs. Paulhus graduated from Monson High School in Monson, Mass., and attended nursing school at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston. She worked as a nurse and participated in the first televised "blue baby" operation. She was a Navy nurse during World War II and also worked as a public health nurse in Washington, D.C. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Olney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at St Peter's, 2900 Sandy Spring Road. Robert L. Gray Robert L. Gray, 65, of Rockville, died Nov. 18 at his home. Born Sept. 22, 1936, in Silver Spring, he was a son of William T. and Lois Thompson Gray of Silver Spring. He was the husband of Joni Gray. Surviving besides his wife and parents are one son, Robert L. Gray Jr. and his wife Jackie of Rockville; two sisters, Josephine Louro of Frederick and Marie Gabrielson of Frederick; three brothers, William, Ray and David Gray, all of Silver Spring; and five grandchildren. Mr. Gray was a graduate of Montgomery Blair High School and served in the U. S. Army from 1955-1956. He was self-employed and operated the Ward and Gray Inc Tile and Marble Co. in Silver Spring. He was the husband of Hazel M. Hamilton, his wife of 54 years. Born Feb. 15, 1924 in Silver Spring, he was a son of the late James A. Hamilton Sr. and Helen Lechlider Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton, a lifetime Montgomery County resident, worked in the plastering business for Dodd Brothers. He served in the U.S. Navy on board the U.S.S. Underhill during World War II and was the holder of a Purple Heart. He attended Greenridge Baptist Church in Clarksburg. Surviving besides his wife are two children, James Randall Hamilton of Mount Airy and Linda Faye Anderson of Clarksburg; five grandchildren, Lee Randall Anderson of Damascus, Catherine Victoria Anderson and Amanda Rae Anderson both of Clarksburg, Lauren Elizabeth Hamilton and Kevin Alexander Hamilton both of Mount Airy; one great-grandson Jordan Lee Anderson of Damascus; and two sisters Margaret Roberts and Helena Dieffenbach, both of Frederick. Presley, 77, of Waynesboro, Pa., died Nov. 20, 2001, in the Waynesboro Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past 1 1/2 years. Born March 30, 1924, in Bluefield, Va., he was the son of the late Marion J. and Cora (Ray) Presley. He lived most of his life in Rockville, Derwood, Gaithersburg and Barnesville. Mr. Presley attended Maryland schools. He and his wife, Mrs. Martha J. (Fink) Presley, were married July 5, 1946. She died Jan. 3, 2001. He had lived at his present residence for the past 13 years. Mr. Presley was employed as a truck driver for the Montgomery County, Maryland Highway Department for 32 years. He retired in 1982. Mr. Presley was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 1758, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 1191 and the William Max McLaughlin VFW Post No. 695, all of Waynesboro, Pa. He was also a member of the Blue Ridge Sportsmen's Association, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., American Legion Post No. 239 and the AMVETS, both of Cascade, Md. He is survived by two daughters, Juanita L. (Dave) DeLair of Walkersville and Phyllis L. (Randy) Presley of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; three sons, Steven L. (Laura) Presley and Thomas R. Presley, both of Waynesboro, and Philip L. (Betty) Presley of Thurmont; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one sister, Grace Haga of Boonsboro; one brother, Tollie Presley of St. Augustine, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Broad St., Waynesboro. Burial was in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Washington Township, Pa. Ronald L. Mills Sr. Mr. Ronald Lee Mills Sr., 41, of Rockville died on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in a home fire. Born Oct. 19, 1960, in Olney, he was a son of William K. Mills Sr. of Salisbury and the late Betty Howard Mills. He was the husband of the late Tamala (Tammy) Sue Mills, who also died in the home fire. Mr. Mills attended Damascus High School. He worked as a roofer for Atlantic Roofing Co. in Rockville. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, playing the guitar, and singing Country music. He is survived by two children, Ronald L. Mills Jr. and Shannon B. Mills, both of Rockville, his grandfather, Alfred Miller of Rockville, his stepmother, Ruth Ann Mills of Salisbury, seven sisters, Linda Chrogan of Hyattstown, Carolyn Kursey of Tennessee, Brenda Bailey of Frederick, Debbie Smith of Poolesville, Kathy Mills of Monrovia, Wanda Stanley of Damascus, and Mary Mills of Texas, five brothers, William K. Mills Jr and Wayne Barnhouse of Frederick, Johnny W. Mills and Frankie Barnhouse of Germantown, and Robert Nicholson of Gaithersburg, one half-sister, Judy Mitchell of Salisbury, and two half-brothers, Jackie Mitchell of Salisbury and Eugene Mitchell of Germantown. A funeral service is being held at the Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville today at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Parklawn Cemetery, Rockville. Memorial contributions may be made to Longview School, 18100 Washington Grove Lane, Gaithersburg, Md., 20877. Arrangements were made by Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home. Tamala S. Mills Mrs. Tamala Sue Mills, 41, of Rockville died on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in a home fire. Born Oct. 16, 1960, in Olney, she was a daughter of Melvin L. King Jr. and Helen V. Cheney King of Rockville. She was the wife of the late Ronald L. Mills Sr., who also died in the home fire. Mrs. Mills graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville and was a special education teacher at Longview School in Gaithersburg. She was a volunteer with the Rockville Baseball Association and enjoyed fishing. Surviving besides her parents are two children, Ronald L. Mills Jr. and Shannon B. Mills, both of Rockville, and two brothers, Melvin King, III and Robbie King, both of Rockville. Funeral Services are being held this morning at the Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Parklawn Cemetery, Rockville.
