Stup David W. Stup, 34, of Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village and formerly of Damascus died Jan. 30, 2002, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born Aug. 17, 1967, in Olney he was the son of John F. Stup of Damascus and Donna Jane Thomas Helton of Fayetteville, N.C. Mr. Stup enjoyed acting. He had a love for animals. Surviving besides his father and mother are two sisters, Hope E. Butler and Jennifer L. Stup, both of Frederick; two brothers, Victor Fitzwater of North Carolina and John Benjamin Stup of Damascus; his paternal grandmother, Laura Olive Stup of Ijamsville; and stepmother, Donna Stup of Auburn, N.Y. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Olin L. Molesworth P.A., Funeral Home in Damascus. Burial followed at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. Emory B. Edwards Emory Burton Edwards, 93, of Clarksburg, died Jan. 31. at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. He was the husband of Ruth Hough Edwards. Born January 5, 1909, in Boyds, he was a son of the late Samuel E. and Blanche E. Thompson Edwards. Mr. Edwards worked as a streetcar operator for the old Capitol Transit Company in Washington, D.C. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from Clarksburg to Boyds. He operated the Clarksburg Store for 24 years. Mr. Edwards had a great love for traveling. He was a member of Clarksburg United Methodist Church. Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Joan E. Ruff and her husband William of Montgomery Village; three stepdaughters, Frances Ludlow and her husband Charles of Rockville, Louise Burdette of Brunswick, and Gloria Winter and her husband Phil of Clarksburg; and one stepson, Oliver King and his wife Linda of Woodbine; three grandchildren; numerous step grandchildren; and one sister, Lenora Stull and her husband Bucky of Rockville. Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by one son, E. Glenn Edwards, one grandson, David C. Marshall, and two wives, Velma Barr Edwards and Iris King Edwards. Funeral services were held Feb. 5 at the Olin L. Molesworth P.A. Funeral Home in Damascus. The Rev. Lynn Glassbrook, pastor of Clarksburg United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial was in Clarksburg Methodist Cemetery. Judith A. McNish Burns Mrs. Judith Ann McNish Burns, 54, of Montgomery County died Feb. 1, 2002, of pneumonia at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Born March 16, 1947, she was the daughter of Dona D. McNish. She was the wife of Donald F. Burns Jr. Surviving besides her husband and mother are three children, Joseph D. Burns, Bonnie A. Melby and Kelly I. Roth; one sister, Elisa M. Braddock; one brother, Russell J. McNish; and six grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association. Arrangements were made by DeVol Funeral Home, 10 E. Deer Park Ave., Gaithersburg, MD 20879. Geoffrey L. Ferri Geoffrey Luke Ferri died of a heart attack on Jan. 4, 2002. Born on may 14, 1956, he was better known as Geoff to all who knew him, he was a loving husband, son and father, a friend and champion to all who needed one, a neighbor who reached out to others, an outdoorsman who respected wild life and a businessman whose principles and ethics were second to none. A long time community activist, Mr. Ferri served as a PTA President of Darnestown Elementary School and Northwest High School. Mr. Ferri also served as a vice president of the Montgomery County Council of PTAs as well as a vice president of the Darnestown Civic Association. In addition, he served as Quince Orchard High School PTA cluster coordinator and was a member of the PTA Executive Boards for Ridgeview Middle School and Quince Orchard High School. Most importantly, Mr. Ferri was a family man who demonstrated an active interest in his children's education and activities. His love and devotion to his wife and children was evident throughout his life. Mr. Ferri is survived by his wife, Emilia; a daughter, Antonia (Toni); a, son, Geoffrey Jr.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ferri; three sisters, Donna, Lynn and Karen; and a brother, Albert. Mrs. Heselton was an Avon representative for 49 years and a member of the Grace United Methodist Church Woman's Circle. Survivors include one daughter, Jean Engelmann of Frederick; three grandchildren, Barbara Carlo of Jefferson, Kurt Engelmann of Arizona and Beth Merriman of Jefferson; and three great grandchildren, Rachel and Joshua Merriman and Nicholas Carlo. George William Offutt George William "Bill" Offutt, 71, of Stephens City, Va., died Feb. 3, 2002, in the Winchester Medical Center. Mr. Offutt was born July 11, 1930, in Eckhardt, Md., the son of the late Ralph W. Offutt Sr. and Ruth Elizabeth Filsinger Offutt of Frederick. He attended First Presbyterian Methodist Church. He is retired from Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin, as director of maintenance and safety. Mr. Offutt was also a member of Knights of Pythias, Charles Town Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge No. 846 and Gaithersburg/Laytonsville Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Offutt married Margaret Lou Harper on Aug. 12, 1950, at St. Rose of Lima Church. Surviving with his mother and wife are a son, William Barry Offutt of Three Churches, W. Hawkins, 72, of Germantown, died Jan. 31 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Born July 22, 1929, in Maryland, she was the daughter of Ella and Roy Earp Sr. She was the wife of the late Hilleary R. Hawkins Sr. Survivors include seven children, Gloria J. Robertson of Germantown, Lorraine M. Hawkins of Germantown, Melody R. Carr of Germantown, David K. Braxton Jr., 37, formerly of Germantown, died Jan. 25 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville after a long illness. Born May 17, 1964, in Richmond, Va., his family moved to Laurel in 1971. There, he continued his education at Laurel Elementary, Oakland Middle School and graduated from Laurel Senior High School in June of 1982. After graduation, he became a chef and worked in Montgomery County. In 1984, he moved to Sarasota, Fla. After eight years, he returned to Germantown, where he worked in the seafood department of Giant Food. He was preceded in death by sisters Bernice and Tammi Braxton and a brother, Kenny Braxton. Surviving are his mother Samantha Green-Franklin and stepfather Karl Franklin of Hanover; father Thomas Braxton Sr. of Frederick; brothers Jeremy Braxton of Mexico, Robby Malone of Atlanta, Ga., Travis Braxton of Frederick, Corey Braxton of Baltimore, and Karl Franklin Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters Dionna Blackman of Abilene, Texas, Ashley and Raven Braxton, of Frederick; niece Kellie Braxton; aunts Margaret Pullium and Frances Jefferson of Richmond, Va.; and uncle Wilbur Pullium of Richmond. Harvey Mitchell, 74, of Hedgesville, W.Va., died Jan. 23 at the Shenandoah Health Care Center in Charles Town, W.Va. Born May 21, 1927 in South Acton, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Alice Kinder Harvey. She was a retired deputy clerk from the Berkeley County Circuit Court. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Barnesville. Edith Arline Turner Edith Arline Turner, 82, of Silver Spring died Feb. 3, 2002, at home. She was a homemaker and seamstress and a volunteer for Montgomery General Hospital. Born June 24, 1920, in Goshen, she was a daughter of the late Remus Dorsey and Maude Bell Riggs. She was the wife of the late William Henry Stinson Sr. Mrs. Stinson was a graduate of Gaithersburg High School. She attended the Union Memorial Hospital Nursing Program in Baltimore in 1942 and graduated top in her class. She worked at Montgomery General Hospital and did volunteer nursing for the neighboring clinic in Olney. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Laytonsville and was a former member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Olney. She was an active member of the Flower Guild and Altar Guild. Mrs. Stinson became a certified realtor in 1979 and worked for about five years. She was a member of Shannon and Luchs Realtors Million Dollar Club. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was active in the Goshen Community. Survivors include four children, William H. Stinson Jr. of Laytonsville, David R. Stinson of Virginia, Sally S. Colella of Kensington and Marie S. Dubel of Laytonsville; three sisters, Hazel Ligon of Ashton, Joyce R. Hawkins of Goshen and Barbara Ann Stiles of Charles Town, W. Born in Laytonsville on Sept. 23, 1916, he was the son of the late Clarence W. and Bessie Wachter Unglesbee. He was the husband of Mary Cashell Unglesbee, to whom he had been married for 63 years. Mr. Unglesbee was a graduate of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring. He worked for Western Electric Company for 45 years and retired in 1981 as a supervisor in communications. He was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of the Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church for 40 years. He was the Sunday School superintendent and a member of the choir. His hobbies included bowling, horseshoes and traveling. Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, Mary L. Muriel O. Easton Muriel O. Easton, 98, of Sandy Spring, died Feb. 10 at Friends Nursing Home in Sandy Spring. Born Oct. 13, 1913, in Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Lemuel and Dora Scaggs Welsh. She was the wife of the late Harry L. Easton, who died in 1969. Mrs. Easton graduated from Laurel High School and worked as a clerk at the Sandy Spring Post Office. She retired after 32 years of service. Before her marriage, she taught school. She was a member of Sandy spring Friends Meeting House and taught Sunday school. Her hobbies included travel, crocheting and her flower garden. Survivors include three children, Barbara L. Prior to that she was a member of Montrose Baptist Church, also in Rockville, where she taught Sunday school for 15 years. She was a neighborhood chairwoman for Girl Scouts of America for many years. Ms. Knabenshue graduated in 1942 from Buckhannon-Upshure County High School in Buckhannon, W.Va. Broadfield Andrews Catherine "Kay" M. Broadfield Andrews, of Wilmington, N.C., died Feb. 15 at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove. She was the wife of John H. Andrews III. Mrs. Andrews worked as a personal finance officer at Citibank before her retirement and was a Gaithersburg Lioness. She was a help center volunteer at Carolina Beach, a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was active in the Capeside Village Community. Surviving besides her husband are three children, Charles E. Dahl of Germantown; Judy Sinatra and her husband Joseph of Leland; and Karen D. Bailey and her husband Clay of Norcross, Ga.; eight grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; and three nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Edward H. Dahl. Beverly Jean Antonelli Beverly Jean Antonelli, 69, former property manager of Forest Oak Towers, died suddenly Feb. 8,2002, in her Montgomery Village home. Mrs. Antonelli was the manager of Forest Oak Towers for 20 years when she retired in August 2001. A resident of the Gaithersburg area since 1974, she was the founder of the building's social club, which hosted many dances and holiday events for the senior citizens who lived there. As founder of the club, Mrs. Antonelli worked with club members who held holiday dances and picnics as well as other activities for the residents. Mrs. Antonelli was born in Chicago to Norwegian immigrants who settled in the city. As a young woman, she worked for the Whirlpool Corporation in its public relations department. On April 27, 1962, she married the late Vincent A. Antonelli Sr., whom she met through friends in Chicago. The couple settled in the Chicago suburbs and Mrs. Antonelli was a stay-at-home mother. She spent her time volunteering at her children's schools and was a Brownie Troop leader. Services for Mrs. Antonelli were held Feb. 11 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring. She is survived by two daughters, Kristine A. Cooke of Bowie and Susan E. Haber of Bel Air; a son, Vincent A. Appleby Jr. Marguerite Agnes Appleby Jr., 49, of Damascus, died Feb. 23 at her home. Born Dec. 31, 1952, in Damascus, she was a daughter of the late Henry William F. Appleby Sr. and Marguerite Riley Appleby. Ms. Appleby graduated from Damascus High School and worked at the National Bureau of Standards. She was the owner/operator of Appleby's Antiques in Damascus. She enjoyed traveling and was Catholic. She is survived by three sisters, Rose Burroughs of Germantown, Florence Rich of Damascus and Ruby Barnes of Ohio; four brothers, George Appleby of Olney, Charles Appleby of Damascus, Thomas Appleby of Gaithersburg, and John Appleby of Fredericksburg, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. Burial and services will be private. Walter Marvin Cox Mr. Walter Marvin Cox, 71, of Frederick, died Feb. 19, 2002, at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick. Born Feb. 1, 1931, in Virginia, he was a son of the late Walter William and Mary Jane Harner Cox. He was the husband of Nellie M. Cox. Mr. Cox attended Ceres High School in Ceres, Va. He served in the Marines in the Korean conflict and received a Purple Heart. He worked on the Montgomery County police force for 12 years. He later owned and operated the Lee Gay Dairy Bar in Gaithersburg, the restaurant at Layman's Stop and Shop in Laytonsville and also owned the PIA's Pizza in Brunswick. Before his death, he worked in security at Sodexho in Frederick for Marriott Corporation. Mr. Cox was an avid sports enthusiast. He liked football, baseball and basketball. He also enjoyed hunting. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Lisa G. Devine and her husband, Tony, of Union Bridge and Laura L. Cox of Reston, Va.; two grandchildren, Travers Nathaniel Devine and Trenton Christopher Devine, both of Union Bridge; four sisters, Dean Schaeffer of Frederick, Leona Calloway of Gaithersburg, Eloise Deebo of Florida and Amy Cook of West Virginia. Salvator Lavanty Mr. Salvator (Henry) Lavanty, 90, of Darnestown died Feb. 24, 2002, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born July 8, 1911, in Sharpsburg, Pa., he was a son of the late Salvator and Rosina Repolli Lavanty. He was the husband of the late Mary L. Lavanty. Mr. Lavanty worked as a foreman for Republic Steel Company and as a courier for Jordan Kitts. His hobbies included crossword puzzles and reading. He is survived by a son, Donald F. Mr. Michael was a graduate of George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and had taught language for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He had owned and operated Jerome J. Michael and Associates, where he was a commercial real estate consultant. He enjoyed computers, researching genealogy, playing the piano, photography and sailboats. He was a private pilot. Selby Virginia Anne Selby, 71, of Rockville died Feb. 13 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Born Dec. 15, 1930, in Washington, D.C., she was a secretary. Ms. Selby graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1949 and had ridden show horses in her younger days. Survivors include one brother, William J. Selby Jr. of Rockville; and two nieces and three nephews. Muriel O. Easton Muriel O. Easton, 98, of Sandy Spring died Feb. 10 at Friends Nursing Home in Sandy Spring. Born Oct. 13, 1913, in Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Lemuel and Dora Scaggs Welsh. She was the wife of the late Harry L. Easton, who died in 1969. Mrs. Easton graduated from Laurel High School and worked as a clerk at the Sandy Spring Post Office. She retired after 32 years of service. Before her marriage, she taught school. She was a member of Sandy spring Friends Meeting House and taught Sunday school. Her hobbies included travel, crocheting and her flower garden. Survivors include three children, Barbara L. Brown of Burtonsville, Leah E. Brown of Dayton and Donald W. Easton of Clarksville; grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Hetzel Mary James Hetzel, 71, of Sandy Spring died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage Feb. 6 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. She was born Nov. 29, 1930, in Philadelphia, the daughter of J. Robert and Dorothy Biddle James of Wallingford, Pa. She was a graduate of Westtown Friends School in Westtown, Pa., and attended Carleton and Bryn Mawr colleges before her marriage to Frederic V. Hetzel in 1951. She and her husband have lived in the Sandy Spring/Olney area since 1963. Upon her husband's graduation from Haverford College in 1952, they lived for two years on the Navajo Reservation in Crownpoint, N.M., where he completed his alternative service to the military draft teaching elementary classes at the Indian Service boarding school and she performed volunteer work with congenitally crippled Navajo children. They moved to the Washington, D.C., area in 1955, where her husband was employed by the U.S. Labor Department. Mrs. Hetzel was a member of the Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and was involved in volunteer activities associated with the Meeting and the Sandy Spring community. She was also a local Democratic Party precinct chairman and served as a volunteer worker in many Montgomery County political campaigns. With her cousin, Nan Yarnall, she was co-founder of the Cricket Book Shop in Ashton. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Robert W. Hetzel of Nashville, Frederic J. Hetzel of Purcellville, Va., and Sylvia Hetzel Cipparrone of Florence, Italy; a sister, Caroline J. Herrin of Winchester, Mass.; a brother, John R. James of Exton, Pa.; and five grandsons. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. March 2 at the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting, 17715 Meetinghouse Road in Sandy Spring.
