She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Col. Wilmer Kersey Benson Jr (U.S. Army, Retired), who died in July 1999. She was born on June 15, 1918, in Douglas, Ariz., where her father, Col. Derosey Carroll Cabell Jr., was a career Army officer. She met her husband to be during his first tour in the Panama Canal Zone in 1938 and they were married in the Cathedral of Saint Luke, Ancon, Panama Canal Zone on May 13, 1939. She was a graduate of Balboa High School, in the Canal Zone, in 1937, and had attended the Canal Zone Junior College. Mrs. Benson, known affectionately to her friends as "Gidge." When her husband retired from the Army in 1968, they settled initially in Rockville and later moved to the Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg. She was active in the Olney Lions Club and assisted her husband in his business of Tax Assistance for the Elderly. Mrs. Benson is survived by her daughter, Nancy C. Benson of Ellicott City; two sons, Command Sgt. Maj. Wilmer K. Benson III of Rockville and Lt. Col. Morgan Benson of Dugway, Utah; six grandchildren; three step grand children; four great grandchildren; and one step great grandchild. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, alongside her husband. Services will be held at 3 p.m. July 5. Austie B. Johnson Austie Blanca Johnson, 94, of Gaithersburg died June 2, 2002, at Montgomery Village Care and Rehab (Center). Born July 17, 1907, in West Virginia, she was a homemaker. Survivors include two sons, Leon Johnson and Lester Johnson; one sister, Margaret Osgood; eight grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren; and two great great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis B. Johnson, and a daughter, Mary Griffith. Arrangements were made by DeVol Funeral Home. Jane Elizabeth Kinsey Mrs. Jane Elizabeth Kinsey, 94, of Gaithersburg, died May 27, 2002, at the Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg. Born Sept. 1, 1907, in Boyds she was a daughter of the late Clarence Lee and Eva Dutrow Ayton. She was the wife of the late Edwin R. Kinsey Sr., who died in 1963. Mrs. Kinsey was a life-long resident of Gaithersburg. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Pentalpha Chapter No. 38 -- Order of the Eastern Star for almost 75 years. She was a life-long member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg. She had been a former Sunday school teacher and was active in church activities. Mrs. Kinsey is survived by a son, Edwin Reese Kinsey Jr. and his wife, Marilyn Linhart Kinsey, of Monrovia. She was preceded in death by a brother, Hershey Dutrow Ayton. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Guild Chapel Building 211, Asbury, 201 Russell Ave., Gaithersburg, where the Eastern Star will hold a service. Arrangements are by the Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville. Sandra Kay Henein Sandra Kay Henein, 53, of Germantown, died May 26 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Known as "Lizzie" to her family, Henein was born Nov. 12, 1948, in Hinton, W.Va., to the late Judge and Dorothy Booker. She moved to Washington, D.C., while she was in junior high. She dropped out of school but later obtained her GED in 1974. Her first marriage to Frank Melvin "Earl" Early ended in divorce. She remarried Wagdy Edward "Eddy" Henein in 1989. They later divorced. In February of 1985 she began working for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission at the Seneca Wastewater Treatment Plant Germantown. She was promoted to the position of senior supervisor-plant operator in 1995. She retired last December on disability. Henein was known for her arts and crafts talents, as well as planting flowers outside the WSSC plant where she worked. Henein is survived by her son Shaun Early; a grandson she was raising Tyrone Oliver; grandchildren Makeya Early, Sierra Ison, La Tika Thompson, Robert Thompson, Xavier Connor and Isiah Connor; and three sisters Jaqueline McNeil, Diania Bailey and Donna Rivers. One son, Jerome Early, preceded her in death. Services were held Friday at the Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Oxen Hill. Burial was held at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton. Carrie M. New Carrie M. New, 82, of Germantown, died May 31 at Montgomery General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Rowland H. New. Born Aug. 29, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Ira O. and Fannie Oschmann Garbutt. Survivors include one son, Rowland I. New, of Germantown; one brother, Charles Garbutt of Chandler, Ariz.; one brother-in-law, John E. New, of Melbourne, Fla.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Mount Airy. William T. Tippet Jr. William T. Tippet Jr., 80, of Germantown, died May 27 at his home. He was the husband of Eleanor E. Tippet. Born in Concord, N.H., on Nov. 25, 1921, he was the son of the late William T. Sr. and Esther Larson Tippet. Mr. Tippet served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict. Surviving in addition to his wife are five children, William T. Tippet III and his companion, Julie Wise of Baltimore, Allen Tippet of Crownsville, Charlene Rodriquez and her husband, Carlos, of Germantown, Chester A. Leon B. Grant Jr. Leon Bernell Grant Jr., 49, of Damascus, died May 27 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. He was the husband of Kathleen Flanagan Grant. Born March 25, 1953, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Leon Sr. and Ruby Smith Grant. Mr. Grant was a communications engineer and worked for CDSI, now ACS, in Rockville, the Department of Energy in Germantown and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C. Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Craig, Duane, Leon B. III and Tauren W. Grant; three sisters, Brenda Bell and her husband, Ronnie, Karen Grant and Syeda Grant; three brothers, Dell Grant, Dayfan Grant and his wife, Sherrelle, and Darrelle Grant; and nine grandchildren. Norris, 87, pastor emeritus of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Damascus, died May 29 at Collingswood Nursing Home in Rockville. Born May 21, 1915, in Baltimore, he was a son of the late William W. Norris and Sarah A. Boyd. He attended St. Paul's Parochial School and St. Charles High School in Baltimore and St. Mary's Seminary. He held a bachelor of arts degree, a master of arts degree and a licentiate in sacred theology degree. His first assignment was as associate pastor at the Church of the Nativity in Washington, D.C., from 1941-1956. He was the pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Beltsville from 1956-1969. In 1969, he became pastor at St. Gabriel's Church in Washington, D.C., where he served until 1971. He was pastor at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Damascus from 1971 until 1982, at which time he became pastor emeritus at St. Paul's until his death. Survivors include one brother, Ralph J. Norris and his wife, Mary, of Cary, N.C.; one nephew, Dr. Christopher S. Norris; one niece, Sherry N. Delgabo; one great-nephew, Adam Norris, and one great-niece, Lauren Norris. He was preceded in death by one brother, William B. Norris, and one sister, Helen Norris. Mass was celebrated Monday at St. Paul's Catholic Church. Hazel Mary Hamilton Hazel Mary Hamilton, 77, of Clarksburg and formerly of Silver Spring, died June 2 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland, Md. She was the wife of the late James Alexander Hamilton Jr. Born Sept. 25, 1924, in Nethers, Va., she was the daughter of the late Ernest Lloyd and Ida Dodson. Surviving are her two children, James Randall Hamilton of Mount Airy and Linda Faye Anderson of Clarksburg; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Merle Guiffre of Rockville. Memorial contributions may be made to Greenridge Baptist Church. Blanche L. Hall Blanche L. "Bee" Hall, 73, of Rockville died May 24 in Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. She was the wife of Edward W. Hall, to whom she had been married for 50 years. Surviving besides her husband are three children, Jerri Hall-Gortowski and her husband Ken of Elmhurst, Ill., Lee Hall of Kensington, and Nancy Hall of Sunbrook, Texas; one brother, Bob Noone, of Arlington; and three grandchildren. Born April 23, 1930, in Melrose, Iowa, she was a daughter of the late Robert Joseph and Ruby Marie Chance Sinclair. She was the wife of the late Walter F. Engler, who died in 1999. Mrs. Engler was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Olney. She worked for the Department of Defense as a personnel management specialist. Survivors include three children, Lynn M. Gross and her husband Douglas of Olney, James F. Engler Sr. and his wife Joanne of Sykesville, and Richard A. Engler of Rockville; five grandchildren; four sisters, Delores Yecke of Minnesota, Gertrude Clemmons, Shirley Carr and Eileen Miller of Iowa; and three brothers, Charles, Robert and Archie Sinclair of Iowa. Linthicum, 72, of Westminster, formerly of Montgomery County, died May 14 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, after complications from a stroke. Born Nov. 24, 1929, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Vestus Jesse and Catharine Spurrier Willcox. She was the wife of Barry W. Linthicum, her husband of 46 years. She was a 1948 graduate of the Hannah More Academy and a 1952 graduate of the University of Maryland. She received her master's degree in social work from the Richmond Professional Institute and was employed at Family and Child Services in Washington, D.C. She enjoyed opera, interior design and English literature. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are one son, James G. Linthicum; two daughters, Janet W. Linthicum and Jill Terrell and her husband Leonard; and two grandchildren, all of Westminster. A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Laytonsville. *****June 12, 2002***** Bernard Lipps Bernard Lipps, 78, of Rockville, died June 4 at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington in Rockville after suffering a stroke. He was the husband of Sylvia Lipps for 57 years. Born Oct. 4, 1923, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Myer and Jennie Lipps. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Northwest Washington in 1941, he attended Michigan State University and later graduated from The George Washington University. He then joined the Navy, eventually earning the rank of lieutenant, and enrolled in the Navy's V-12 program that sent him to dental school at New York University. After graduation in 1948, Dr. Lipps briefly started a private practice in Washington, D.C. However, he was called to duty during the Korean War and served in the dental corps of the Air Force, which stationed him in Rapid City, S.D. He earned the rank of captain. Upon returning to Washington, D.C., in 1952, he started a successful dental practice, which in 1957 he moved to his home office at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and East-West Highway in Chevy Chase. He moved the practice to Bethesda in 1980, and his son Gerald Lipps, also a dentist, took over the office when the elder Dr. Lipps retired in 1986. The practice has since moved to North Bethesda. Dr. Lipps was a member of Ohr Kodesh Congregation, the American Dental Association and Maimonidies, a club for Jewish dentists. He enjoyed telling jokes, playing golf, fishing and watching football. He and his wife spent winters in Pompano Beach, Fla., until 1998. Survivors include his wife; daughter Leslie Gnatt and her husband, Paul, of Potomac; two sons, Gerald Lipps of Bethesda, and David Lipps and wife, Audrey, of Fairfax, Va.; grandchildren Brian Gnatt of Montgomery Village, Joshua Gnatt of Atlanta, Randall Gnatt of New Orleans, Julie and Emily Lipps of Rockville, and Allison, Carolyn and Rebecca Lipps of Fairfax, Va. A sister, Freda Freeman, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Friday. Burial was at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Adelphi. Contributions may be made to a charity of choice. Duane Anthony Deal Mr. Duane Anthony Deal, 36, of Montgomery Village, died June 6, 2002, at his home. Born Sept. 17, 1965, in Virginia, he was a son of the late John Lynn Deal Jr. and LaVeria Williams Davis of Germantown. He was the husband of Suzette Faison Deal. Mr. Deal served in the U.S. Army and worked as a manager of Kinko's. Besides his mother and wife, he is survived by his stepfather, Henry Davis of Germantown; a brother, John L. Deal III of Mt. Airy and his wife, Lisa; two nephews, Brian A. Davis of Germantown and John L. Deal IV of Mt. Airy. He is preceded in death by a sister, Tracey Renee Davis. Born Dec. 23, 1942, in Johnstown, Pa., she was the wife of Jeffrey M. Fewell. Mrs. Fewell was an office manager. She was a member of Villa Ridge Condominium Association, Board of Elections, St. Martin's Catholic Church and Thompson Tax & Assoc., Inc. Surviving in addition to her husband, is one daughter, Jennifer M. Fewell. Stephenson Chris Bertrand Stephenson, 47, of Gaithersburg died June 8, 2002, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. He was the husband of Kathie F. Stephenson. Born Dec. 31, 1954, in Hampton, Va., he was the son of Susan R. Fox and the late Bertrand H. Stephenson. Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two sons, Justin C. Stephenson and Joseph C. Willman, 94, of Leisure World in Silver Spring died June 14, 2002, at Brooke Grove Nursing Home, Sandy Spring. Mr. Willman was an electrical engineer with the Department of the Navy for about 40 years. He was a member of Woodside Methodist Church, a former president of the Rotary Club of Rossmoor-Aspen Hill and belonged to other local organizations. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. Born Nov. 17, 1907, in Colorado, he was the son of the late Rev. Fred W. Willman and Jean Nicolson Willman. His wife, Virginia Burns Willman, preceded him in death. He is survived by children Barbara E. Roos and husband Carl of Mount Airy; Donald L. Willman and wife Reba of Gaithersburg; grandchildren Patricia Wolf and husband Ron of Frederick; Kevin W. Laird and wife Kathleen of Texas; Robert L. She was the wife of the late Gilbert Shrewsbury and Norris Knight. Born in West Union, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Zella Knight Moffatt. Surviving are one son, David Shrewsbury and his wife, Tina, and two grandsons, Jonathan and Christopher Shrewsbury, all of Damascus; three brothers, Julius, John and Jackson Moffatt; two sisters, Lillian Griffith and Virginia Robbins. Brothers James and Joseph Moffatt preceded Mrs. Knight in death. A funeral was held Saturday at the Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home in Damascus. Burial was in Damascus Methodist Cemetery. Paul L. Peck Paul L. Peck, 60, of Viera, Fla., formerly of Clarksburg, died June 15 at his home. He was the husband for 36 years of Josephine J. Fresella Peck. Born in New Brunswick, N.J., on May 11, 1942, he was the son of the late Lyman and Anna N. Grace Peck. Dr. Peck was a Montgomery College professor of biology and genetics and chairman of the school's biology department from 1992-1996 and retired from the college in 2001 after 30 years. He had represented the college at forums on genetic engineering, civil rights and human rights. He was a former president of the American Association of University Professors' Montgomery College Chapter and former chairman of the college's Rockville faculty council. He was a 1964 biology graduate of King's College in Pennsylvania. In 1971 he received a doctorate in genetics from Catholic University. He moved from Clarksburg to Florida about six months ago. Surviving in addition to his wife are children Michael James Peck and his wife, Gail Salisbury Peck, Nancy Elaine Peck III, all of Clarksburg, and Thomas Elliot Breach of Frisco, Colo.; granddaughter Kira Eleanor Peck of Clarksburg; and a sister, Julie Peck Graessle of Oxford, Ala. She was the wife of the late Frank Calvisi. Born April 29, 1913, in Poggio Piccnze, Italy, she was the daughter of Giacomo Evangelista and Grazia Ciatti. Mrs. Calvisi is survived by two daughters, Sister Grace Calvisi and Vera Ganassa; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Santi. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his sons, Justin Christopher and Joseph Cody Stephenson; his parents, Susan F. and the late Betrand Harold Stephenson; two sisters, Amelia and Jan Stephenson both of Deal, Md.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. A memorial service was held June 14 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 9250 Damascus Road, Damascus. Burial was private. Contributions may be made to the Chris B. Paul, 90, of Silver Spring died June 9, 2002, at Holy Cross Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Burtonsville. Mr. Paul had worked as a machinist for the Government Printing Office. He was born Nov. 24, 1911. He is survived by nephews Roger Paul of Rhode Island, Julian Paul, Peter Welker and Jean Buckley of Massachusetts and niece Margaret Paul of Maryland. Services were held June 11 at Rinaldi Funeral Chapel, Silver Spring. Burial took place in Fall River, Mass. Harry Wheeler Harry Wheeler, 86, of Silver Spring died June 18, 2002, at Montgomery General Hospital, Olney. He was the husband of Gloria Haggerty Wheeler. Born Feb. 29, 1916, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Samuel Arthur and Ida Geib Wheeler. A service was held Saturday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Derwood. Burial followed on Monday at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Mill Hall, Pa. Edward Allan Thompson Edward Allan Thompson, 40, of College Park, formerly of Silver Spring, died June 17, 2002, at home. Mr. Thompson worked for Ourisman Chrysler Jeep in Clarksville for three years. He previously worked in home improvement. Born Sept. 5, 1961, in Takoma Park, he was the son of Carlton E. Thompson of Sebring, Fla. and Millie Thompson of College Park. He was the father of Dylan Thompson of Westminster. He is also survived by stepmother Karen Thompson of Sebring; Clifton Harkleroad of College Park; brothers Mark Thompson of College Park, David Thompson and his wife Filomena of Monrovia; Donna Nichols and her fianc‚ Ryland Guthrie of Brookneal, Va. A service was held June 20 at Donaldson Funeral Home Chapel, Laurel. Burial followed at George Washington Cemetery, Adelphi. Sarah Ann Woodward Sarah Ann Woodward, 88, of Rockville died June 24 at Casey House in Derwood. Born April 2, 1914, in Laytonsville, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Martha S. Sibley Bowman. She was the wife of the late Emerson H. Woodward. Mrs. Woodward graduated from Glenelg School in Glenelg, Howard County. She worked as a sales lady for the G.C. Murphy Company in Rockville, as well as the Twinbrook store and the Wisconsin Avenue store, where she retired after 30 years of service. She was a member of Rockville Free Methodist Church. Her hobbies included reading, quilting, sewing and crocheting. Mrs. Woodward is survived by four children, Lois M. Kemp and her husband James of Damascus, Michael Woodward and his wife Tina of Wheaton, Charles Woodward and his wife Barbara of South Carolina, and Patricia Woodward of Virginia; and 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Rockville Free Methodist Church, First and Grandin streets in Rockville. Burial will be in Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville. Willman, 94, of Leisure World in Aspen Hill died June 14 at Brooke Grove Nursing Home in Sandy Spring. Born Nov. 17, 1907, in Colorado, he was the son of the late Rev. Fred W. and Jean Nicolson Willman. He was the husband of the late Virginia Bunts Willman. Mr. Willman was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. He moved to the Washington area in the early 1930s, where he worked as an electrical engineer with the Department of the Navy for 40 years. He was a member of Woodside Methodist Church, former president of the Rotary Club of Rossmoor-Aspen Hill and a member of the Rossmoor Camera Club. He was active in the Mutual Ten Community of Leisure World and enjoyed attending University of Maryland football games. Survivors include two children, Barbara E. Roos and her husband Carl of Mount Airy, and Donald L. Willman and his wife Reba of Gaithersburg; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Betty Warburton, of Leisure World. Funeral services were held June 17 at the Inter-Faith Chapel at Leisure World. Interment was in Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville. Arrangements were handled by the Muriel H.
