The 36-year-old died after a struggle with anorexia. She was an advocate for prevention and research to treat the eating disorder. Ms. Ratner worked with the Eating Disorder Coalition, an advocacy group in Washington D.C., designed to promote the greater understanding of eating disorders and gain federal money for research and treatment. Also, she counseled women with the disease and helped teach doctors in training how to diagnose and treat psychiatric disorders in young women. She graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and attended George Washington University. Broyles Mr. Horace Ney "Jack" Broyles, 94, formerly of Crestwood Village, Frederick, died June 27, 2002, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mildred Lucile Wynne Broyles, who died July 10, 1993. Born April 1, 1908, in Norton, Va., he was a son of the late Horace N. and Irma W. Keller Broyles Sr. Mr. Broyles was an industrial engineer and inventor. He is survived by two daughters, Joan Wynne Carlin, of West Orange, N.J., and Patricia Broyles Denu, of Clarksburg; 10 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one great grandson, Matthew Earle Coleman; one sister, Frances Girdner Provost; and one brother, Vincent Aird Broyles. Burke Karyn Ann Burke, 45, of Gaithersburg, died June 27, 2002. She was the daughter of Dorothy Ann and the late Robert C. Burke. Survivors beside her mother include four sisters, Patricia Lutz, Ann Bush, Barbara McCurry and Dorothy Hunsberger; three brothers, Rob, Tom and Ken Burke; and 12 nieces and nephews. A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Martin's Catholic Church, 200 S. Frederick Road, Gaithersburg. Entombment was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Mary Rose Williams Mary Rose Williams, 66, formerly of Sedelia, Mo., died June 25, 2002, at Montgomery Village Care & Rehab in Montgomery Village. Born Aug. 4, 1935, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Jack Karmel and Gladys Lloyd. She lived eight years in Missouri and moved back to Maryland in 1997 following a stroke. Ms. Williams is survived by a sister, Christine Miller of Lake City, Fla.; four brothers, Donald Karmel, James Lloyd, John Lloyd and Joe Lloyd; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Saturday at Epworth United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg. Burial was private. Ralph Adams Ralph Adams, 91, died June 26, 2002, in Farmville, N.C. He was a former resident of Cloverly and Laurel, and a retired mechanic with Giant Food. Mr. Adams was born Sept. 19, 1911, in Clarksburg, W.Va. He served in the Pacific during World War II as a mechanic in the U.S. Army, where he received numerous decorations for meritorious service. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margarite Adams; his second wife, Grace (Barnett) Adams; and a son, John Wilkinson of Gainesville, Fla. He is survived by children Margaret Edwards of Farmville, N.C., Arthur Hill of Thorofare, N.J., Josephine Tyler of Caneadea, N.Y., John Adams of Santa Clara, Calif. and Tamera (Adams) Bulla of Laurel; and numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Charline Weaver Charline Lovelle Jordan Weaver, 74, of Wheaton died June 16, 2002, from non- Hodgkin's lymphoma. She worked for two years as a secretary with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 10 years with GEICO, and 25 years with the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Mrs. Weaver was a member of Hughes United Methodist Church in Silver Spring for more than three decades, where she was active in charity work. Born March 25, 1928, in Grainton, Neb., Mrs. Weaver moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1954. She graduated from Nebraska State Teachers College with a bachelor's degree in music education. Survivors include her husband, Bernard Weaver of Wheaton; a son, David S. Weaver; granddaughter Abigail Jordan Weaver; three sisters, Margaret Fredrickson, Gwendolyn Galloway and Twyla Steinbrink; and a brother, Gerald Jordan. A service was held June 20 at Hughes United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Parklawn Cemetery in Aspen Hill. Arrangements were provided by Collins Funeral Home in Silver Spring. *****July 10, 2002***** Jack Schumacher Dr. Jack Schumacher, 84, of Gaithersburg, who had served as chief of staff at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, died July 2 at the Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg. Born July 12, 1917, in St. Paul, Neb., he was a son of the late Rudolph Lorenz and Florence Tinkham Schumacher. He was the husband of the late Kathryn P. Schumacher, who died in 1998. Dr. Schumacher received his medical degree from George Washington University Medical School in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Army as a captain in the Medics in World War II. Dr. Schumacher was a general practitioner who worked in the Laytonsville/Gaithersburg area in addition to serving as chief of staff at Montgomery General Hospital. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and retired from the medical profession in the late 1980s. He is survived by three children, Kathryn D. Schumacher of Gaithersburg, James R. Schumacher of Omaha, Neb., and Suzanne Stiassni of California; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Lou Sinnott. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. July 27 at the Asbury Chapel, 211 Russell Ave. in Gaithersburg. Burial was in Laytonsville. Harold Myer Elwyn Harold Myer Elwyn of Bethesda, who was the proprietor of Western Pharmacy and Morgan Pharmacy in Georgetown for nearly 50 years, died June 16 at Suburban Hospital after a brief illness. He was 83. Mr. Elwyn was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Lynn, Mass., to Morris and Rose (Jacobson) Elwyn. He grew up working in his father's small grocery store, attended local schools, and graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. In 1942, Mr. Elwyn married the late Bernice Mendoza Elwyn. During World War II, Mr. Elwyn served in the U.S. Navy as a pharmacist at Bethesda's National Naval Medical Center and in the Middle East before being assigned in 1945 to the Navy's Epidemiology Unit in Cairo and Calcutta. For his service, including his cholera research during a Calcutta epidemic, the Navy awarded Mr. Elwyn the Legion of Merit. In 1946, Mr. Elwyn founded Western Pharmacy at 1665 Reservoir Road, N.W. In 1972, he relocated his business to Morgan Pharmacy, a 100-year-old landmark at 3011 P Street, N.W., where he remained until his retirement in 1992. In addition to serving his local customers, Mr. Elwyn established an international prescription service that serviced the State Department and foreign service personnel posted all over the world. Among his customers, he was known as the "Pharmacist to the World." In 1968, at age 50, he learned to scuba dive, which remained a passion until the end of his life. He became an instructor at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase YMCA, and from 1973 to 1993 he taught hundreds of students to scuba dive. He also became a proficient underwater photographer and exhibited his work locally, including an exhibition at the China Coast Gallery in Washington, D.C. Mr. Elwyn also took up skiing in his 50s. He went on to serve in the National Ski Patrol in western Maryland, providing assistance to injured or stranded skiers. From 1963 to 1972, Mr. Elwyn was a member of the D.C. Board of Pharmacy. He was later appointed to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, serving on its advisory committee on pharmacy-licensing examinations. Mr. Elwyn was also active in a number of civic organizations, including the Boys Club of Greater Washington, the Georgetown Citizens Association, and the Inter-Racial Council for Business Opportunity. He was a longtime member of Beth El Congregation in Bethesda. In recent years, until just before his death, he volunteered weekly in the pharmacy department of Suburban Hospital. Mr. Elwyn's wife, Bunny, to whom he was married for 59 years, died in August 2001. He was also predeceased by his son, Kenneth, who died in April 2002. Survivors include his other children, Michelle Elwyn of Arlington, Debby Genevich and her husband Vince Genevich of Lincoln University, Pa., and Vicki Elwyn of Nassau, the Bahamas. Coconut Drive, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315. Ruth R. Beall Mrs. Ruth Watkins Beall, 75, of Clarksburg, died July 8, 2002, at Glade Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Walkersville. She was the wife of Rudell C. Beall. Born Oct. 25, 1926, in Browningsville, she was a daughter of the late William M. and Fannie McElfresh Watkins. Mrs. Beall was a lifetime member of Bethesda United Methodist Church in Browningsville. She participated in many church activities, such as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, Bible School director and teacher, Bible study leader and UMYF counselor. Besides her husband, she is survived by three children, Carolyn Shriver and her husband, Glenn, of Hyattstown, Sandra Grear of Norristown, Tenn., and Barry W. Beall and his wife, Melissa, of Woodbine; two stepsons, Robert Beall and his wife, Mary Ann, and Clark Beall and his wife, Diane, all of Lewisdale; one sister, Janice W. William Thomas Magers Sr. Mr. William Thomas Magers Sr., 70, formerly of Germantown, died July 5, 2002, at his home in Ormond Beach, Fla. He was the husband of Dorothy H. (Esworthy) Magers. Born Nov. 1, 1931, in Rockville-Seneca area of Montgomery County, he was a son of the late William F. and Lottie L. Berry Magers. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Followed by a long- standing career as a general contractor, where owned and operated Magers Construction Company, with his father. He and his wife retired to their home in Ormond Beach in 1987. Surviving besides his wife are three sons, William T. Magers Jr., of Clarksburg, Raymond F. Sutherland, of Monrovia, and Stephen L. John Anthony McGrath John Anthony McGrath, of Rixeyville, Va. died July 5, 2002, of pneumonia at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. He was a resident of Sharon Nursing Home there. Born in Yonkers, N.Y., in 1922, Mr. McGrath graduated from Gorton High School in 1940 and from Columbia University in New York with a bachelor of arts in liberal arts and a bachelor of science in pre-med. He undertook extensive graduate work leading to high-level programming. He was the son of the late Jane and John J. McGrath, both of Yonkers. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII as a specialist in Norden and Sperry bombsights on B-24 Liberator bombers. A longtime resident of Rixeyville, Mr. McGrath worked for the Department of the Army in and around Washington as a COBOL programmer and systems analyst until his retirement in May 1982. He also represented fellow union employees. Earlier he was employed in a similar programmer-analyst capacity at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, N.Y. In 1961, Mr. McGrath married Jean Long Richardson, originally of Staunton, Va., a social worker with the Girl Scouts of America. For a time they served jointly as presidents of the Virginia Museum in Richmond. His wife passed away in 1995 after a five-year bout with Alzheimer's disease. Mr. McGrath is survived by his sister, Joan McGrath Harris, of Damascus, and two nieces and two nephews. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Cyndee L. Luko Mrs. Cyndee Lee Luko, 51, of Gaithersburg died July 5, 2002, at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital-Bayview Campus in Baltimore. She was the wife of James T. Luko. They were married 32 years. Born May 19, 1951, in North Charleroi, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Hogg Ludwig. Mrs. Luko was a registered nurse and worked for area healthcare facilities including Sibley Hospital, Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Suburban Hospital in Bethesda and Kaiser Permante in Gaithersburg/Rockville. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Luko is survived by one daughter, Jenni Johnson and her husband, Chad, of Frederick; one son, Josh Luko of Gaithersburg; one brother, Larry Ludwig of Louisiana; and two grandchildren, Rylee Johnson and Justice Luko. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the chapel of the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Moran, 65, of Laytonsville died July 7, 2002, at Casey House, Rockville. Born Jan. 8, 1937, in Collogo Point, N.Y., he was a son of Louise Glaser Moran of New York and the late Edward C. Moran. He was the husband of Jane T. Moran of Laytonsville. Mr. Moran was a graduate of Flushing High School in Flushing, N.Y., and graduated from the City College of New York with a degree in business administration. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-59 with Foreign Service in Munich, Germany. He worked as the chief of classification for the Office of Personnel Management of the U.S. Government. Mr. Moran was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Brookeville, where he served as the church secretary. He was a volunteer at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. His hobbies included reading and computers. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Alexandra H. Langley of Laytonsville; two sisters, Irene Taylor of Long Island, N.Y., and Louise Prenci of Naples, Fla.; and one grandson. Perrell of Naples, Fla., formerly of Gaithersburg, died July 3, 2002. Mr. Perrell was formerly with Railway Mail Service and the U.S. Post Office in a managerial position. He was a U.S. Naval veteran of World War II and participated in several invasions including "D" Day. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Institute in Annapolis; American Legion in Baltimore; a life member of the V.F.W.; commander of the Golden Gate Post No. 7721; and a member of the Post Ritual Team. He was an active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples) of Naples. Mr. Perrell was an avid flower grower in Maryland and won many awards for roses and other flowers. He was an expert ship modeler and his models grace many homes and businesses both in Maryland and Naples. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anna Marie Perrell; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Myrtle; and his brother, Thomas. The family received friends Sunday at Hodges Funeral Chapel, 3520 Tamiami Trail North. Timberlake, 71, of Gaithersburg, died July 11, 2002, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Mrs. Timberlake was a teacher and guidance counselor. In Montgomery County she taught at Wheaton High School, Newport Junior High School, Damascus High School and finally 22 years at Gaithersburg High School. She was a charter member of the Montgomery County Civil War Roundtable and a member of the Order of Eastern Star; and she was a Paul Harris Fellow. She was the wife of John C. Timberlake. Born April 19, 1931, in Keyser, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Andrew Martin and Evelyn Duckworth Weakley. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lynn Timberlake Crump and her husband Donald Crump of Holtwood, Pa., Robin Timberlake Reed and her husband, Lt. Joe Reed, of Norfolk, Va.; and a granddaughter, Machenzie Crump. A service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, Middleway Road, Middleway, W.Va. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hammerbacher Clyde Walter Hammerbacher, 94, of Laytonsville, formerly of Bethesda, died July 14 at Casey House in Rockville. Born Sept. 8, 1907, in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late Otto and Emma Martin Hammerbacher. He was the husband of the late Alma Catherine Cullinan Hammerbacher. Mr. Hammerbacher was a graduate of the old Business High (School) in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for the D.C. government as a License Bureau inspector, and retired in 1968. Survivors include two children, Mary H. Manner and her husband, Glenn, of Laytonsville, and Ann H. Buell and her husband, Ronald, of Richardson, Texas; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Friends may visit 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Muriel H. Hyatt Herbert Souder Hyatt, 86, died July 13, 2002, from complications following a stroke. He suffered from Parkinson's disease. Born April 10, 1916, in Damascus, he was the son of the late Herbert and Beulah Souder Hyatt. Mr. Hyatt attended Damascus elementary and high schools and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in 1936. After graduating from college, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as commanding officer of the armed guard unit aboard the S.S. Gateway City in the North Atlantic and European theaters of World War II. After the war Mr. Hyatt returned to Damascus and worked as a cashier at the Bank of Damascus and served as a member of its board of directors. He became vice president of the bank in 1953 and was elected president of the bank in 1955. He served as president of the bank until 1986. While Mr. Hyatt was president of the Bank of Damascus, he served two terms as president of the Maryland Bankers Association. He also served on the executive council of the American Bankers Association for three years. He was appointed postmaster of Damascus in 1947 until he retired from that position in 1972 and was secretary-treasurer of the Montgomery County Revenue Authority from 1957 to 1976, assuming the position of chairman the last year. In 1960, Mr. Hyatt helped organize and served as charter president of the Damascus Utilities Co., which constructed the current water system in Damascus. He helped organize and served as charter president of the Damascus Lions Club and was a life member and a Melvin Jones Fellow. He was also a member of the Damascus Post 171 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Damascus United Methodist Church. He was president of Hyatt Building Supply and Hyatt Properties Inc. until his death. Mr. Hyatt is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruby Williams Hyatt; four grandsons, Timothy, Stephen, John and Jerry Hyatt; one great-grandson, Christopher Hyatt; and one sister, Hilda Watkins. He was preceded in death by one son, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Jerry H. Hyatt, and one sister, Janice Green. Born Oct. 12, 1913, in Rockville, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Margaret Leahy Norris. Mrs. Duvall was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Damascus. Born Nov. 1, 1931, in the Rockville-Seneca area of Montgomery County, he was a son of the late William F. and Lottie L. Berry Magers. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following the war he worked as a general contractor for Magers Construction Company, which he owned and operated with his father. He and his wife retired to their home in Ormond Beach in 1987. John Anthony McGrath John Anthony McGrath, of Rixeyville, Va. died July 5, 2002, of pneumonia at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. He was a resident of Sharon Nursing Home there. Born in Yonkers, N.Y., in 1922, Mr. McGrath graduated from Gorton High School in 1940 and from Columbia University in New York with a bachelor of arts in liberal arts and a bachelor of science in pre-med. He undertook extensive graduate work leading to high-level programming. He was the son of the late Jane and John J. McGrath, both of Yonkers. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII as a specialist in Norden and Sperry bombsights on B-24 Liberator bombers. A longtime resident of Rixeyville, Mr. McGrath worked for the Department of the Army in and around Washington as a COBOL programmer and systems analyst until his retirement in May 1982. He also represented fellow union employees. Earlier he was employed in a similar programmer-analyst capacity at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, N.Y. In 1961, Mr. McGrath married Jean Long Richardson, originally of Staunton, Va., a social worker with the Girl Scouts of America. For a time they served jointly as presidents of the Virginia Museum in Richmond. His wife passed away in 1995 after a five-year bout with Alzheimer's disease. Mr. McGrath is survived by his sister, Joan McGrath Harris, of Damascus, and two nieces and two nephews. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Ruby M. He was 66. Mr. Armon was born in Philadelphia, and later moved to Atlantic City, where he and his brothers helped their parents run a restaurant. When he was 20, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy for two years, and served in the reserves for four more. He moved to Bowie with his wife, Phyllis, in 1968, and became a salesman for George's Radio and TV for nine years. He then sold art in area malls, and opened Armon's World of Art in Bethesda 19 years ago. It closed three years ago, at which time he worked out of his home. He was a 32nd degree Mason of Washington, D.C., and a member of Justice Lodge 285 of Atlantic City. He had appreciated the arts, and enjoyed listening to opera as he worked. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Phyllis Armon; a son, Richard Armon and his wife Karen of Columbia; a daughter, Lillian Armon of Bowie; a brother, Gerry Armon of Florida; two grandchildren; and a nephew. Tipton Lorraine A. Tipton of Potomac, a lawyer and Montgomery County resident for more than 50 years, died at her home July 9. She had been in frail health for several years, and died peacefully of natural causes. She was 94. Born in Eau Claire, Wisc., Mrs. Tipton received her law degree from Northwestern Law School and was admitted to the State Bar of Illinois in 1936. While at law school, Mrs. Tipton became a student and researcher in the pioneering field of aviation law, and was employed beginning in 1936 on the staff of the Northwestern Law School Institute of Air Law and later as an editor of the Journal of Air Law. Also in 1936, she married Northwestern Law School classmate Stuart G. Tipton, and the couple moved to Washington, D.C. where Mr. Tipton became general counsel to the Civil Aeronautics Board and later president of the Air Transport Association. At Mrs. Tipton's insistence, the couple purchased acreage in Potomac in 1946. During the next five decades, Mrs. Tipton was instrumental in the growth of many Potomac and Montgomery County institutions, including Suburban Hospital, Potomac Country Gardeners, Potomac Valley Bank, Potomac Hunt, Holton-Arms School, and Friends of Great Falls Tavern. She was active on behalf of numerous other causes, including the Republican party and charities promoting historic preservation, animal welfare and protection of birds and wildlife. Mrs. Tipton's abiding love was for her family and the family's 54-acre home, known as "Galleon's Lap," where she died. Under a development plan approved by the Montgomery County Council last year, the majority of Mrs. Tipton's land is to be preserved as parkland. Mrs. Tipton is survived by three daughters, Judith T. Miller of Australia, Ann T. Donnelly of Washington state, and Patience T. Huntwork of Arizona; and six grandchildren. She was born Jan. 12, 1914, in Catlett, Va., the daughter of the late Amos Loy and Harriett E. Isenberg Shipe. She moved to Maryland in 1919 and attended the Oakdale Public One Room School. She graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1933. Mrs. Hudson was a member of the Hughes United Methodist Church in Wheaton since 1949 and a charter member of the United Methodist Women. She was a beautician and enjoyed gardening and cooking. She worked in Ruth's Beauty Salon in Gaithersburg where she started her career. She later bought the Wheaton Beauty Salon and then owned and operated "Welbie's" Beauty Salon in Rockville. She later worked at the Holiday Park Senior Center in Wheaton and operated the beauty shop there until she retired in 1990. She had been a member of the Suburban Hairdresser and Cosmetology Association and had served as president of the group. After going to the Layhill Center -- Genesis Elder Care, she was recognized as the Resident of the Month there. Mrs. Hudson is survived by two children, Joan E. Gartrell and her husband, Ralph, of Rockville, and Edward Dennis Hudson and his wife, Elizabeth, of Wheaton; five grandchildren, Timothy Gartrell, Julie, Cheryl and Gail Hudson, all of Wheaton, and Robert Gartrell, of Olney; two great-grandchildren, Anna Gartrell and Matthew Gartrell, both of Olney.
