Mrs. Tolker, formerly of Kensington, was a Montgomery County teacher and principal for 19 years. She was the wife of Allie G. Tolker. Born June 29, 1915, in Rockville, she was a daughter of the late Sarah Ethel and Melvin Stanley Penn. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Sara Clark and her husband John of Mount Airy, Michael Tolker of Davidsonville, Joseph Tolker and his wife Barbara of Gaithersburg, Nancy Berry and her husband Jay of Damascus; grandchildren Marissa Clark, Ashley Clark, Yvonne Tolker, Hannah Tolker, Joseph Tolker, Casey Berry, Brandi Berry and Kent Berry; siblings Lee Penn and Clara Shipe of Rockville, and a number of nieces and nephews. A brother, William Penn, preceded her in death. A service was held Friday in the chapel at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Aspen Hill. Virginia Allison Mrs. Virginia Allison, 82, of Frederick, formerly of Gaithersburg, died Aug. 28, 2002, at her home. Born June 9,1920, in Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Clifton and Susan Rollison Burdette. She was the wife of the late John A. Allison Sr. who died in 1992. Mrs. Allison was a graduate of Gaithersburg High School. She had worked at the former Stup and Costello Oil Company as a bookkeeper before retiring and becoming a homemaker. Mrs. Allison is survived by two children John A. Allison Jr. of Pennsylvania and Jill Allison of Frederick; four grandchildren; and one great grandson. Clagett Mrs. Laura Victoria Hershey Clagett, 86, of Gaithersburg died Sept. 2, 2002, at Wilson Health Care Center. Born April 9, 1916, in Comus, she was a daughter of David R. Hershey and Leila M. Hershey. She was the wife of the late Wilson L. Clagett, who died in 1971. Mrs. Clagett graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1953. She owned and operated Hershey's Cleaners, Inc., in Gaithersburg for 40 years. She was a member of Grace Methodist Church, a charter member of the Gaithersburg Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Soroptomists of Upper Montgomery County. She is survived by two children, Wilson L. Clagett Jr. and his wife, Sherry, of Gaithersburg, and Nancie C. Dhyse and her husband, Paul, of Arnold, Md.; one sister, Leila H. Farmer; three brothers, Harold Hershey, John F. Hershey and Walter H. Hershey; two grandchildren; and four step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. David T. Jenkins David Terrence Jenkins, 63, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Ohio, died Aug. 30, 2002, at Suburban Hospital. Born May 28, 1939, in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was the son of Gale and Joan Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins served as a military journalist in the Air Force from 1961 to 1965. He worked as an insurance adjuster. He is survived by one son, Scott Jenkins and his wife, Marcia, of Georgia; one brother, Gale Jenkins and his wife, Christine, of Hong Kong; one sister, Becky Griffin, of Gaithersburg; one niece, Laura Griffin; and two nephews, Chris and Andrew Griffin. Born March 4, 1937, in Takoma Park, he was a son of the late John L. and Frances McWilliams Vander Sys. He was the husband of Judy Mellor Vander Sys. Mr. Vander Sys had also lived in Colorado and Arkansas. He had served as a police officer for Montgomery County and also Jefferson County, Colorado. He retired from Shady Grove Adventist Hospital as plant services manager and a first class stationary engineer. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, John Vander Sys of Oregon, Alan Vander Sys, stationed in Germany, and Pamela Vander Sys Biros of Virginia; two foster children, John Burkey and James Gardner, both of Maryland; and his step children, John Heitmuller of Virginia, Gretchen Heitmuller Randolph of Montgomery Village, Lara Peigh of Mt. A lover of nature, he enjoyed fishing, nature hiking, rock climbing and exploring. As a child he enjoyed learning karate. Music and cars were two of his passions. Surviving besides his parents are two sisters, Allison Brewer of Chevy Chase and Laura Brewer of Monrovia; paternal grandparents, John and Jean Brewer of Rockville, and numerous aunts and uncles. He was a carpenter and had worked for the Frank S. Phillips Construction Company in Washington, D.C. for more than 20 years before retiring in 1980. After 1980, he worked as a private remodeling contractor. He had lived in Burtonsville for 60 years. He was born March 17, 1926 in Paytes, Va., a son of the late William Arthur and Nellie Estell Wolfrey Sullivan. He was the husband of Alverta Mae Johnson Sullivan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by children Ruth M. Edens and husband Mickey of Monrovia; Linda D. Sullivan of Silver Spring, Randolph L. Patricia Jean Hopkins Patricia Jean Hopkins, 67, of Burtonsville died Aug. 19, 2002, at John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. She worked for the Montgomery County Humane Society in Rockville. She volunteered her spare time at Brooke Grove Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Hopkins was born Dec. 26, 1934, in Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Trelda Snyder. She is survived by her husband Donald R. Hopkins; a brother, Donald Snyder; a sister, Joan Snyder; a son, Jeff Hopkins of Wiley Ford, W.Va.; a daughter, Linda Adams of Ashton; and four grandchildren survive her. Herbert Morgan Wadleigh Herbert Morgan Wadleigh Sr., 91, formerly of Bethesda, died Sept. 3 at his daughter's home in Kearneysville, W.Va., under hospice care. Born Oct. 10, 1910, in Boston, Mass., he was the son of the late Herbert Addington and Cora Morgan Wadleigh. He was a Unitarian. He graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor of arts and master of business administration from Harvard Business College. He was an economist for the federal government, and served as a civilian with the Department of the Navy during World War II. He is survived by one son, Herbert Morgan Wadleigh Jr. of Winchester, Va.; and one daughter, Elizabeth Anne Fazenbaker of Kearneysville, W.Va. His parents, his wife, Gertrude Mary Lavery Wadleigh, and one sister, Ruth Wadleigh, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Monday at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va. Irving Macey Horowitz Irving Macey Horowitz, 90, died Aug. 18 in his sleep at his home in Rockville after a short illness. Born in Charleston, S.C., he moved to Baltimore and then to Washington as a young man. He worked as a salesman for McCormick & Co., retiring after 34 years. His wife, Esther Rosenberg Horowitz, preceded him in death. Survivors include three daughters, Roberta Sonneborn and husband Charles of Bethesda, Eileen Hermann and husband Robert of Spotsylvannia, Va., and Rita Coopersmith and husband Henry of Rockville; four grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Harris of Walterboro, S.C.; and his caregiver, Emile Kabba. Arthur Lee Oden Jr. Arthur Lee Oden Jr., 54, of Gaithersburg, died Sept. 2 of liver and kidney failure at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Ann Oden for more than 37 years. Born Jan. 11, 1948, he lived in Gaithersburg his entire life. Donald Odale Miller Donald Odale Miller, 68, of Monrovia, died Sept. 4 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He was the husband of Nadine Miller. Born Sept. 27, 1933, in Rio, W.Va., he was a son of the late Thomas Hoyt and Nancy Pearl Reynolds Miller. Mr. Miller was a retired heating and air conditioning mechanic for the Montgomery County government. Lauretta Hurley, 88, of Damascus, died Sept. 4 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. She was married to the late Gilmore E. Hurley for 63 years. Born April 27, 1914, in Damascus, she was a daughter of the late William Asbury and Bessie May Burdette Brandenburg. Mrs. Hurley was a homemaker. She was a member of Damascus United Methodist Church, the women's group of the church, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Damascus Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving her are her six children: Alfred Hurley and his wife Elaine of Frederick, Robert Hurley and his wife Elizabeth of Boonsboro, Ann Ashley and her husband Gilbert of Woodbine, Ruth Crigg and her husband Donald of Walkertown, N.C., Harold Hurley and his wife Kimberly of Damascus, and Arthur Hurley and his wife Beverly of Damascus; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Brandenburg Campbell of Donna, Texas, and Emma Groce Molesworth of Braddock Heights; and one brother, Jerrie Brandenburg of Damascus. Samuel Umberger Samuel Umberger, 75, of Frederick, died Wednesday, Sept. 4 at his home. He was the husband of Calista B. Umberger. Born March 3, 1927 in Ceres, Va., he was the son of the late Samuel L. and Vinnie Baugh Umberger. Mr. Umberger retired in 1985 after 37 years as an electronics technician at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 409. He was a faithful member of Germantown Baptist Church for many years, serving as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, teacher, trustee and lay minister. Prior to his illness, Mr. Umberger enjoyed gardening, bowling, golf and softball. He was an avid sports fan. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Diana Krop and her husband John of Frederick and Donna Magruder and her husband Steve of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandsons, Scott Moreland, Chris Moreland, Jeremy Magruder and Jason Magruder; one granddaughter, Julie Krop; five great-granddaughters; two brothers, Joe Umberger of Germantown and Earl Umberger of Baldwin, Fla.; and two sisters, Virginia Frazier of Frederick and Marie Price of Germantown. Mr. Umberger was predeceased by five siblings: Eugene Umberger, Paul Umberger, Garnet Umberger, Leida Umberger and Violet Umberger Neal. Funeral services were held Saturday with the Rev. Klopp Ellen Spangler Klopp, 90, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Bethesda and Olney, died Sept. 9 of heart disease at George Washington University Hospital. Born Feb. 18, 1912, in Reading, Pa., she was the wife of the late Calvin T. Klopp, who died in June. Mrs. Klopp received her associate's degree from Bradford Junior College in 1932 and earned her bachelor of arts in education degree from Kutztown University in 1934. She taught in elementary schools in Montgomery County for several years. She was a member of the Washington Club, the Huguenot Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include three children, Benjamin and wife Jana of Georgetown, S.C., Cynthia and husband Keith of Ottawa, Canada, and Spangler and wife Theresa of Lewes, Del.; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Dr. and Mrs. Klopp will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 13 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Lewes, Del. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery. Born July 28, 1951, he was a graduate of Valley High School in 1969 and attended Pennsylvania State University. He was employed as a project engineer at Lurgi Lentjes North America Inc. and was previously employed by Bechtel Power Corp. in Gaithersburg. He was the husband of Romaine Wos; father of Jennifer, Jessica and Victoria Wos; son of Nellie and Joseph Wos; and brother of the late Pamela Wos. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 6701 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Lower Burrell, Pa. Frank E. Gentry Frank E. Gentry, 52, of Rockville died Sept. 2 at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park. Born March 31, 1950, in Maryland, he was a son of Beulah Blevins Gentry Perry of Rockville and the late David C. Gentry. Besides his mother, he is survived by a sister, Carol Marshall and her husband Paul of Mount Airy; and one niece, Sue Marshall of Mount Airy. Mr. Gentry was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville. He had worked as a heating mechanic at Montgomery College in Rockville, where he retired because of ill health. She had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. She had been head librarian at the Silver Spring Library since 1992 and had worked at several other libraries in Montgomery, Prince George's and Howard counties. Prior to her retirement in June, Ms. Irvine had worked in Montgomery County libraries for 26 years. She worked to expand the non-native speakers' sections and resources at the Silver Spring Library, and was active in the American Library Association. She was a member of Paint Branch Unitarian Universalist Church. Ms. Irvine was also active with service organizations such as Shepherd's Table and Martha's Table, and was a member of the Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce and Silver Spring Community Vision. She also ran her own catering business and donated food to special causes. Ms. Irvine was born in Columbus, Ind., and had lived in Maryland since 1966. She graduated from Stanford University in 1965 with a degree in German and later received master's degrees in library science, comparative literature, and management and public policy from the University of Maryland. Survivors included her parents, George and Eunice Irvine of Puyallup, Wash.; one brother and two sisters, William Irvine of Lake Oswego, Ore., Carol Ingram of Albany, Calif., and Dorothy Shireman of Puyallup; her partner, Everett Dutton; and her sons, Michael Edwards of Williamsburg, Mass., and David Edwards of Jessup. Garner W. Duvall Sr. Mr. Garner W. Duvall Sr., 91, of Gaithersburg, a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, died Aug. 27, 2002, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. He was the husband of Helen King Duvall to whom he was married in 1935. Born on Nov. 4, 1910, on Hawkins Creamery Road in Damascus, he was the son of the late Sherwood and Verdie Roller Fulk Duvall. He graduated from Damascus High School in 1929 and attended Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C. He was employed by the Montgomery County government for 37 years and was supervisor of assessments the last 10 years of his career. He was appointed as a director of the Bank of Damascus in 1939 and remained a director until the bank was sold in 1989. He was a charter member of the Montgomery County Fair formed in 1949. Upon his retirement from Montgomery County in 1973 he was appointed by acting Governor Blair Lee III to the State Roads Commission and an ex-officio member of the Maryland Transportation Commission where he served for 22 years. He was a member of the Maryland State Bankers Association and the National Assessors Association. He was a life member of the Damascus United Methodist Church. Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Barbara Duvall McGraw of Bethesda; one son, Garner W. Duvall Jr. of Rockville; five grandchildren, Catherine B. McGraw, John A. McGraw Jr., Garner W. Duvall III, Laura Duvall Ferguson and James S. Duvall; two sisters, Magalis Waters of Clarksburg and Miriam O'Hara of Frederick; two brothers, Brandon Duvall and Sherwood Duvall, both of Damascus. Mr. Duvall was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Elaine Duvall; a sister, Glenna Smith; and a brother, Kenneth Duvall. Funeral services were held Sept. 3 at Damascus United Methodist Church. Hanrahan Mr. Patrick Francis Hanrahan, 23, of Gaithersburg, died Sept. 12, 2002, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital from a rare complication of mononucleosis. Born in Washington, D.C. on July 18, 1979, he was a son of William F. and Jeanne B. Hanrahan of Washington, D.C., and Rita M. and Mel E. Tull Jr. of Montgomery Village. Mr. Hanrahan graduated from Watkins Mill High School and was a student at Omega Recording Studios School in Rockville, studying sound engineering. He worked as a server at the Willow Tree Inn in Montgomery Village for four years. Mr. Hanrahan was a talented DJ and a rising star in the world of 2 Step Garage music, creating original mixes under the professional name Patrick Francis. Willis Jr., 59, of Gaithersburg died Sept. 13, 2002, at the Veterans Medical Center in Martinsburg, W. Va. Born June 26, 1943, in Redland, Md., he was a son of the late Elmer F. Sr. and Elsie L. Evely Willis. He was the husband of Carolyn S. Willis. Mr. Willis attended Laytonsville Elementary School and Gaithersburg High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1967-71. He was Protestant. Barber Funeral Home. Samuel Umberger Samuel Umberger, 75, of Frederick, died Sept. 4 at his home. He was the husband of Calista B. Umberger. Born March 3, 1927, in Ceres, Va., he was the son of the late Samuel L. and Vinnie Baugh Umberger. Mr. Umberger retired in 1985 after 37 years as an electronics technician at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 409. He was a faithful member of Germantown Baptist Church for many years, serving as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, teacher, trustee and lay minister. Prior to his illness, Mr. Umberger enjoyed gardening, bowling, golf and softball. He was an avid sports fan. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Diana Krop and her husband John of Frederick and Donna Magruder and her husband Steve of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandsons, Scott Moreland, Chris Moreland, Jeremy Magruder and Jason Magruder; one granddaughter, Julie Krop; five great-granddaughters; two brothers, Joe Umberger of Germantown and Earl Umberger of Baldwin, Fla.; and two sisters, Virginia Frazier of Frederick and Marie Price of Germantown. Sirtautas, 67, of Rockville died Sept. 10 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. She was born in Wiesenthal, Germany. Mrs. Sirtautas was a homemaker. She was the wife of the late Severinas Sirtautas; mother of Bruno, Gunther, Hans Peter and the late Karl Sirtautas; and had four grandchildren and a great- granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Roberta Martin Roberta "Micky" Martin, 61, of Rockville died Sept. 4. She was the daughter of Calvin and Marie Smink. Mrs. Martin was a longtime resident of Rockville, where she was the administrator of St. Raphael's Catholic Church until her early retirement, brought on by health problems, in the mid-1990s. She was previously a preschool teacher who ran several schools during the course of her career. Mrs. Martin was very family-oriented and extremely proud of her son and granddaughter. She also had a very special bond with her son's niece, who she considered her second grandchild. Although limited by health problems, she always had the time and energy to spend with her grandchildren. Mrs. Martin was kind and generous, never able to turn away anyone in need. She loved animals and through the years adopted many stray cats. Before her health problems began she opened her home to several troubled teens. Survivors include one son, James D.L. Davis Goldsmith, 89, who served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, died Sept. 18, 2002, of congestive heart failure in the Hospice Center of Northern Virginia. Born in Van Buren, Ark., of Cherokee lineage, Rev. Goldsmith was the first person in his family to attend college and seminary. He married his high school sweetheart, Lucille Riddle, one year after their graduation and one month after his ordination as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Altus, Ark. He attended college while serving as pastor of several small churches in Arkansas and received his bachelor of arts degree in 1938 from Ouachita College in Arkadelphia, Ark. While serving churches in Kansas he received his master of theology degree in 1942 from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Kan. The Rev. Goldsmith earned a doctor of theology degree in 1946. During that time he also served as a state student secretary for the Baptist Convention of the state of Kansas. The Rev. Goldsmith volunteered for service during the Korean Conflict. In addition to helping military personnel in Korea, he established an orphanage for Korean children in Powan. In Korea he received permanent injuries. The Rev. Goldsmith moved east in 1956 to become pastor of the First Baptist Church in Gaithersburg. When required to resign his pastoral duties due to his injuries, he returned to school to earn a doctorate in counseling and worked privately with individuals out of his home office. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Riddle Goldsmith, who died in 1989. The Rev. Goldsmith is survived by two children, Sondra Leigh Goldsmith Proctor of Washington, D.C., and Harold Davis "Pete" Goldsmith of Indiana, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Kelly Goldsmith Kirk of Richmond, Va. and Mark Goldsmith of Alexandria, Va. Martha "Bess" Barnett Martha "Bess" Graham Barnett, 84, died Sept. 17 at her home in Rockville after a long progressive illness. She was the wife of Dr. Robert A. Barnett, a retired surgeon who practiced in the area for 30 years. Mrs. Barnett grew up in Akron, Ohio, where she received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Akron. She earned a master of science degree from Northwestern University in Chicago. She worked as assistant administrator of Akron General Hospital prior to her marriage. She was a member of Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church in Olney and the Montgomery General Hospital Women's Board. She was a volunteer at the thrift shop of Montgomery General Hospital for over 30 years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Bob, of Purcellville, Va.; one daughter, Martha, of Charlottesville, Va.; one brother, Bill Graham, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. Miss Owings had worked as an accountant in insurance for many years. She was born March 28, 1933, in Washington, D.C., and lived in Maryland until 1969 when she moved to Lake Bluff. She was an avid golfer and a former member of the Lake Bluff Women's Club. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Donald; four children, Sharon Hatch and husband Mike of Waukegan, Donna of DeKalb, Donald "Skip" Jr. and wife Laura of Lake Bluff, and Daniel and wife Denise of Lake Forest, Ill.; seven grandchildren; her mother, Mary A.
