Ashley Bernard "Bernie" Lee Ashley, 74, of Frederick, formerly of Gaithersburg, died Sept. 27, 2002, at his residence. He was the husband of June Mays Ashley. Born Oct. 15, 1927, in Charleston, W. Va., he was the son of the late Tarlton V. and Amma M. Smith Ashley. Mr. Ashley served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Besides his wife, Mr. Ashley is survived by four sons, Kyle A. Ashley and his wife, Brenda, of Jefferson, Md., Keith W. Ashley and his wife, Renee, of Elizabethtown, N.C., Kerry L. Ashley and his wife, Robin, of Frederick, and Kevin B. Ashley and his wife, Lisa, of Gaithersburg; one brother, Eugene Ashley and his wife, Imogene, of Charleston, W. Va.; and 10 grandchildren. Arrangements were made by Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., Frederick. Forrest Simms Jr. Forrest "Sonny" Simms Jr., 66, of Germantown, died Sept. 22 at his home. He was born Dec. 29, 1935, in Germantown. Mr. Simms worked for the State Highway Administration. He is survived by his wife Doris Simms of Germantown; children Kenny Simms of Frederick, Mark Simms and wife Sheila of Frederick, Jeff Simms and wife Pam of West Virginia, Evie King and husband John Sr. of Germantown, Rick Simms and wife Tina of Gaithersburg, Tom Simms of Germantown, Gary Simms and wife Karen of Frederick; and 15 grandchildren. Services were held at Germantown Baptist Church with burial at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick. Ardean Lavinia Owings Ardean Lavinia Owings, 91, of Etchison, died Sept. 14 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. She was born Feb. 28, 1911, in Etchison on the farm where she lived her entire life. She was the third child of the late Thomas Sr. and Elizabeth Royer Owings. She had worked as an accountant in insurance for many years. She is survived by a brother, Thomas Owings Jr., with whom she shared a home in Etchison; a sister, Mary Ruth Bogley of Etchison; two nephews, Thomas C. Winkler and wife Cyndi of Florida and A. Brian Lowry and wife Candy of Pennsylvania; two nieces, Jeanne E. Lowry of Frederick and Suzanne A. Lowry of Etchison; two great-nephews; and two great-nieces. She was predeceased by two brothers, Samuel D. and Gillis C. Owings; two sisters, Hazel O. Lowry and Maude E. Owings; and one nephew, Christopher W. Lowry. The Rev. Dantz, 84, of Sandy Spring died Sept. 29 at George Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C. Born July 16, 1928, in Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Marshall and Margaret Gates Thompson. She was the wife of the late Vernon Wesley Dantz. Mrs. Dantz worked at the Sandy Spring Grocery Store in Sandy Spring for 48 years before retirement. She was also a volunteer in the grocery store and the White Elephant Shop at Friends House in Sandy Spring. Mrs. Dantz was a member of Ashton United Methodist Church in Ashton, a member of the Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and an honorary member of the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid bingo player and a fan of the Washington Redskins and the Baltimore Orioles. Survivors include one daughter, Margaret A. Huff of Mount Airy; two sisters, Bessie Knight and Mildred Shoemaker of Frederick; three brothers, Walter Thompson of Wheaton, James Thompson of Maryland and George Thompson of Silver Spring; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Shirley Hobbs Martin Shirley Hobbs Martin, 69, of Lake Bluff, Ill., died at home Sept. 13. She was born March 28, 1933, in Washington, D.C., and lived in Maryland until 1969 when she moved to Lake Bluff. She was an avid golfer and a former member of the Lake Bluff Women's Club. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Donald; four children, Sharon Hatch and husband Mike of Waukegan, Donna of DeKalb, Donald "Skip" Jr. and wife Laura of Lake Bluff, and Daniel and wife Denise of Lake Forest, Ill.; seven grandchildren; her mother, Mary A. Jenkins; stepchildren Charles E. and Karl K. Wilberger; sisters Alice Hoffman and Ruth Pomichter; brother Richard W. Snyder, 87, of Bonita Springs, Fla., formerly of Kensington, Md., died July 16. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Dottie) Snyder, who died in 1997. They had been married for 55 years. Mr. Snyder worked for the Pullman Company and the B&O/C&O Railroad. Survivors include one daughter, Sally Snyder, of Lakewood, Colo.; one son, John F. Geisler, 42, of Gaithersburg died of a heart attack at his home on Oct. 4, 2002. Born March 15, 1960, in California, he was a son of Thomas Geisler and Laverne Witt. Mr. Geisler graduated from Richard Montgomery High School and served in the U.S. Army 75th Field Artillery Group from 1976-78. He was a carpenter. Besides his mother and father, Mr. Geisler is survived by his stepmother, Inge Geisler; stepfather, Bert Witt; two brothers, Gary A. and Don R. Leary Lewis Waters Leary Lewis Waters, 92, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Takoma Park, died Sept. 27, 2002, at the Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg. Mrs. Waters was born Sept. 28, 1910, in Wilmington, N.C. She was the wife of the late Garrett D. Waters, a newspaperman for various East Coast daily newspapers, who died in 1980. Mrs. Waters worked at the old Takoma Park Letter Shop and as church secretary for Ascension Episcopal Church in Silver Spring for more than 20 years. She enjoyed her family and the business world continuing to work at a number of part-time jobs well into her 70s. During the early years of her marriage, she and her husband traveled with the Washington Senators baseball team while her husband covered the team for the Washington Times Herald. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., and Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church in Gaithersburg. She is survived by two sons, Garrett D. Jr. and his wife, Cathy, of Rockville, and Robert C. and his wife, Linda, of Montgomery Village; two grandchildren, Vickie W. Bobik of Harper' s Ferry, W. Va., and Garrett D. III of Silver Spring; two great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Eileen "Tinka" Lewis of Wilmington, N.C., and Betty Waters of Frederick; a brother-in-law, Robert L. of Frederick; and two nieces and two nephews. Anthony Joseph Drzewiecki Anthony Joseph Drzewiecki of Germantown died Oct. 5 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville after a long struggle with cancer. Born Aug. 5, 1947, in Old Forge, Pa., he was a son of the late Helen Drzewiecki and Joseph S. Drzewiecki. He is survived by three children, Anna Pipkin, T.J. Ward Paul Roland Ward, 77, of Centreville, formerly of Rockville, died suddenly on Oct. 4 at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. Born Jan. 22, 1925, in Rockville, he was the son of the late J. Garnett Ward and Orida Jane King. He was the husband of Helen Ward. They had been married 52 years. Mr. Ward graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in 1943 and began a career in farming. He resided and farmed in Montgomery County until 1965, when he and his family moved to Queen Anne's County. He retired this year. His hobbies included woodworking and making furniture. He was a member of Centreville United Methodist Church and the Queen Anne's County Farm Bureau. She earned a degree in accounting from Benjamin Franklin University and graduated from McKinley Tech in Washington, D.C. Rosenberg Daniel Martin Rosenberg, 48, formerly of Rockville, died of pulmonary hemorrhage on Sept. 26 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia after a month-long stay in the Intensive Care Unit. Born April 10, 1954, in New York City, he was the son of Marvin and Margaret Rosenberg of Indialantic, Fla. He was the husband of Jayne Rosenberg. Mr. Rosenberg graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in 1972 and was awarded an academic scholarship to The University of Maryland, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and mathematics. He was a senior consultant specializing in business intelligence and data warehousing with RCG Information Technology in Conshohocken, Pa. Prior to working for RCG, Mr. Rosenberg held positions as an independent consultant at leading corporations in the chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries, including Dupont, Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Allora of Marlton, N.J.; his parents; one brother, Louis Rosenberg of Rockville; and one sister, Judith Brooks of Melbourne, Fla. His first marriage to Holly DuBay ended in divorce. A family service was held at Cape May, N.J., on Oct. 5. Seggel Emmie Viebahn Seggel, 86, a longtime resident of the Washington, D.C. area, died of an infection Oct. 8 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. She had cancer. A native of Springfield, Ill., Mrs. Seggel came to Washington in 1940 to work for the office of Price Administration, a wartime agency. In 1942, she married Richard L. Seggel at St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. In 1964, Mrs. Seggel moved her family to Potomac, where she was an active volunteer at the Potomac Library and a member of the Little Falls Garden Club. She was an avid reader and book club member, a lover of music and singing, and an enthusiastic world traveler. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Richard L. Seggel; a son, Richard F. Seggel of Mayo, Md.; a daughter, Celia S. Pangalis of Potomac; a daughter-in- law Linda L. Seggel of Mayo, Md.; a son-in-law, Niko Pangalis of Athens, Greece; four granddaughters and one great-grandson. Contributions in Mrs. Seggel's name may be made to Habitat for Humanity. Michael W. Hottinger Michael W. Hottinger, 49, of Germantown, died Oct. 16 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born May 28, 1953 in Olney, he was a son of Mary A. Lawson Hottinger of Gaithersburg and the late Gene F. Hottinger. Mr. Hottinger attended Gaithersburg High School. He also served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He retired from the Montgomery County government after 18 years of service as a heavy-duty mechanic. He liked to play softball, fish and hunt. He was an avid Redskins fan. Besides his mother, he is survived by a son, Jason L. Spriggs of Gaithersburg; four brothers, Donald E. Hottinger of Damascus, Aubrey L. Hottinger of Gaithersburg, Charles S. Hottinger of Montgomery Village and Robert B. Hottinger of Alexandria, Va.; a niece, Amanda Hottinger of Hagerstown; and two nephews, Brian and Daniel Hottinger of Damascus. He was the husband of Edith Purdum Mullinix, to whom he was married for 68 years. Born Aug. 22, 1910, in Long Corner, he was the son of the late Samuel E. and Elsie Moxley Mullinix. Mr. Mullinix was a farmer all of his life. He was an avid gardener and attended many antique steam engine shows. He was a member of Howard Chapel United Methodist Church. Survivors in addition to his wife include one daughter, Mary Jane Watkins and her husband, Maynard, of Germantown; one son, J. Kenneth Mullinix and his wife, Mary, of Brookeville; two brothers, Lester and Leon Mullinix of Mount Airy; two grandsons; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. Cloutier Barbara Ann Cloutier, 50, of Mount Airy, died Oct. 27 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Gaetan Paul Cloutier. Born Oct. 2, 1907, in Michigan, she was a daughter of the late North and Mary Etta Bell Albirte. She was the wife of the late William D. Clark, who died April 7, 1979. They were married 53 years. Mrs. Clark was retired from the Public Health Service-National Institutes of Health. She was a member of the Flower Hill Church of the Brethren, a member of the church's senior citizens group and a member of Krafty Kritters. Survivors include one daughter, Patsy C. Laycock and her husband, Joseph, of Gaithersburg; two sons, Ronald S. Clark of Fairfax, Va., and Morris W. Clark and his wife, Anita, of Gaithersburg; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. Deaner K. Lawless Sr. Mr. Deaner K. Lawless Sr., 82, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Barnesville, died Oct. 25, 2002, at the Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg. He was the husband of Margaret C. Lawless. Born June 12, 1920, in Grundy Center, Iowa, he was the son of the late Delbert and Hazel Looker Lawless. After attending high school and college in Iowa, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he spent 20 years in research of tropical medicine, specializing in Malaria. He furthered his research at the National Institutes of Health for the next 10 years after retiring from the Navy. From 1970 until recently he pursued his love of archeology. Much of his collection resides with the state of Maryland. Besides his wife, Mr. Lawless is survived by his children, Deaner Jr., Jim, Karen, Jeanne and Linda; and eight grandchildren. Paul Frederick Malinowski Paul Frederick Malinowski, 46, formerly of Gaithersburg, died October 18, 2002. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., and raised in Longvalley, N.J., with past residence in Annapolis, he attended West Morris Central High School in Chester, N.J. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland, participated in the Marine Corps Marathon and held a private pilot's license. He was employed by Thomas Havey LLC in Washington, D.C. as a programmer/analyst. Mr. Malinowski is survived by his wife, Linda E. Malinowski of Arnold, MD; two children, Nicole Taylor Malinowski, 8, and Madison Leigh Malinowski, 8 months; parents, Joseph and Mary Ellen Malinowski of Gaithersburg; and siblings, Mary, Thomas, John and Richard Malinowski of Gaithersburg. Funeral services were held Oct.25 at Barranco & Sons Funeral Home. Burial was private. William H. Wagner William H. Wagner, 63, died Oct. 9 at his home in Brookeville. He was the husband of Deborah Wagner; father of Scott of Aston, Pa., Greta of Parkside, Pa., Kara of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dawn, Laurel, Robin and Keith of Brookeville; and grandfather of two. Mr. Wagner had worked as a news producer at WUSA-TV Channel 9 and for the AFL- CIO. He most recently worked as director of communications for Satellite and Technology in Williamsburg, Va. He was active in Brookeville, and had produced an award-winning video on the need for a bypass road for the town. A memorial service was held Saturday at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home in Laytonsville. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Mr. Wagner's memory may be made to La Leche League International or the American Cancer Society. Edward C. Wheatley Jr. Edward C. Wheatley Jr., 27, of Laytonsville, formerly of Rockville, died Oct. 7 at his home. Known as "Fast Eddie," he had been an auto mechanic. Born Oct. 21, 1974, in Maryland, he was the son of Edward C. Sr. and Nancy L. Wheatley. He was the brother of Donnie and Dawn Wheatley, and grandson of Agnes Madeline Wheatley and Betty Stone. He is also survived by his girlfriend, Kate Wessling, and numerous other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, LuAnn Freeberger Wheatley. Friends called at the DeVol Funeral Home, Gaithersburg, on Thursday, Oct. 10 where a funeral service was held at 8 p.m. Interment private.
