Burdette, 91, of Dickerson, formerly of Darnestown, died Nov. 21 at her home. She was the wife of the late Melvin R. Burdette Sr. who died in 1966. Mr. and Mrs. Burdette were married March 14, 1927. Born Dec. 31, 1910, in Damascus, she was the daughter of the late Jessee Clarence and Olive M. Cromwell Covell. Mrs. Burdette is survived by six children, Melvin Burdette Jr. of Virginia, Maynard Burdette Sr. and his wife, Shirley, of Boyds, Donald Burdette Sr. and his wife, Ann, of Virginia, Wayne Burdette and his wife, Ginnie, of Dickerson, Larry Burdette Sr. and his wife, Lisa, Geraldine Boswell and her husband, James, of Gaithersburg; one daughter-in-law, Louise Burdette of Brunswick; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, David Burdette Sr. and all of her brothers and sisters, Clarence, Merhl and Charles Covell, Maude Castle, Annie Stull and Mary Freed. Nettie Lou Poole Nettie Lou Poole, 75, of Derwood, died Nov. 25, 2002, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born Aug. 6, 1927, in BuckLodge a daughter of the late Jacob and Beulah Johnson, she was the wife of the late Raymond E. Poole. Mrs. Poole was a graduate of Poolesville High School. She retired from Safeway as a cashier after approximately 25 years of service. She was a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Germantown and more recently had attended United Methodist Temple in Lakeland, Fla., and the Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church in Olney. She is survived by three daughters, Sally J. Staley of Mt. Airy, Diana L. Davis of Derwood and Joy D. Bowling of Lakeland, Fla.; six grandchildren, Walter "Stoney" Davis of Mt. Airy, Michelle I. Adcock of Martinsburg, W. Va., George Stanley Davis Jr. of Mt. Airy, David L. Davis Jr. of Clarksburg and Ronald E. Bowling Jr. and Cory S. Sirk Slick, 99, of Mount Airy, died Nov. 25 at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown. She was the wife of the late Emerson Daniel Slick. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Slick was born June 11, 1903, in Virginia to the late Willis Harvey Sirk and the late Sarah Rebecca DeLauder Sirk. Survivors include children Harvey "Jim" Slick and wife Louise of Waynesboro, Pa., Lester Slick Sr. and wife Ida of Hagerstown, Sarah Katherine Catron and husband Delt of Clarksburg, Ethel Dull and her fiancée Gary Trudle of McConnelsburg, Pa., Raymond Russell Slick of Mount Airy, Elsie M. Brashear and husband Frank of Frederick; and brothers Herman, Russell amd Raymond "Tuck" Sirk. Ronnie P. Edney Mr. Ronnie P. "Bud" Edney, 62, of Olney died Nov. 17, 2002, at Montgomery General Hospital from a rare illness. Born July 28, 1940, in Hendersonville, N.C., he worked as an overhead lineman for 35 years. Mr. Edney is survived by one daughter, Sherry L. Edney; one brother, Tommy Edney of Ashboro, N.C.; one half-sister, Susan B. Mull of Morgantown, N.C.; two half-brothers, Jack and Joe Bonner of Henderson County, N.C.; two aunts, Buelah McAll and Fran McGraw of Henderson, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Moore Mr. Howard Wilson Moore, 83, formerly of Rockville, died Nov. 27, 2002, in Eustis, Fla. He was the husband of Eva W. Moore. Mr. Moore was a World War II veteran who served under General Patton. He later worked for Montgomery County Public Schools. Besides his wife, Mr. Moore is survived by two sons, Jefferson Beeker and Thomas Moore and his wife, Colette; a twin brother, Herbert Moore; and two granddaughters. Prothero Earl Nelson Prothero, 77, of Rockville, died of a stroke Dec. 2, 2002, at his home. He was the husband of Joan Prothero. Besides his wife, Mr. Prothero is survived by seven children, Pam Miller and her husband, Lex, Rick Prothero and his wife, Luann, David Prothero and his wife, Leslie, Denice Fitts and her husband, Tom, Greg Prothero and his wife, Pebble, Lynn Wilkin and her husband, Doug, and Lisa Ash and her husband, Dave; a daughter-in-law, Ann Prothero; one brother, Russell; 23 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Stroupe Mr. Mark D. Stroupe, 34, of Rockville, died Nov. 28, 2002, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born in Maryland, he was a son of Imogene Ferguson Stroupe of Rockville and the late Charles K. Stroupe. Mr. Stroupe was a graduate of Magruder High School. He had worked as a waiter at "The Steaming Blues" in Derwood and also as a greens-keeper at the Manor Country Club. He retired as a cashier/clerk for Safeway Co. because of a heart condition. Besides his mother, Mr. Stroupe is survived by a sister, Deborah J. Stroupe of Gaithersburg; and a niece, Kelly Smith of Gaithersburg. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Muriel H. Hatter Mrs. Joyce Rhoads Hatter, 75, of Laytonsville died Dec. 1, 2002, at Casey House in Derwood, following a long illness. Born March 18, 1927, in Pine Forge, Pa., she was the daughter of Anne and Henry Rhoads. Mrs. Hatter graduated from Indiana State Teacher's College (now Indiana University) in Indiana, Pa., with a bachelor of education degree, and received her master's degree in education from Western Maryland University. She taught for 28 years at Gaithersburg High School, becoming chair of the business ed department in 1982. She retired from Gaithersburg High School in 1991. She was president of the Montgomery County Retired Teachers' Association at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Edgar E. Hatter; one son, Edgar B. Hatter and his wife, Lola, of Glenelg; one daughter, Susan Rose Hatter of Damascus; one brother, Richard Rhoads of Reading, Pa.; and two grandsons. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville. Wilbur Hines Mr. Wilbur Hines, 83, of Gaithersburg, a retired foreman of the Asplundh Tree Expert. Co., and Montgomery County farmer, died Dec. 1, 2002, of chronic heart disease at his home in Gaithersburg. He was the husband of the late Vada W. Hines. He was a lifelong resident of Gaithersburg. During World War II he worked for the B&O Railroad. In 1942, he started his 45-year career as a tree surgeon, becoming a crew foreman in the early 1950s. Mr. Hines recently was awarded his 60-year membership in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Mr. Hines was a member of the Maryland Coastal Conservation Association. Mr. Hines is survived by three children, Norman R. Hines of Kensington, Joyce L. Witt of Bartonville, Ill., and Margaret H. Stinson of Mt. Airy; five grandchildren and three step great grandchildren. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville, Md. Luster Clark McCutcheon Luster Clark McCutcheon III, 59, of Solomons Island, and formerly of Gaithersburg, died Nov. 26, 2002. He was the son of Elizabeth Oliver McCutcheon and the late Luster Clark McCutcheon Jr. and the beloved husband of Carol McCutcheon. Mr. McCutcheon is also survived by two children, Darrin McCutcheon and Laurie Mudd; two stepchildren, Laura Best and J.D. Edwards; a brother, James McCutcheon; and four grandchildren. Mr. McCutcheon was born Feb. 18, 1943, in Marlinton, W. Va., and moved to Gaithersburg in 1951. He graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1961 and attended West Virginia University. After serving active duty for the U.S. Army, he worked briefly for the U.S. Post Office before taking on a career with the Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Fire Department. He ended his 17-year career as the chief administrative officer in 1982. During his career, he received the Montgomery County Silver Medal for Bravery. While working in the fire department, he was an Erie Insurance Agent, owning and operating the McCutcheon Insurance Company until his death. He was a member of the Gaithersburg Chamber of Commerce for many years and served as president in 1979 and 1980. He was also a member of the Rotary Club, Masonic Blue Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police, Montgomery County Crime Solvers and the Montgomery County Transportation Commission. James Edwin Prather The Rev. James Edwin Prather, 90, Pastor Emeritus of Poplar Grove Baptist Church, North Potomac, died Nov. 22, 2002, at the Sharon Nursing Home in Sandy Spring. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edna Mae Prather. Mr. Prather was born Dec. 7, 1911, in Maryland. Mr. Prather is also survived by four daughters, Phillis Copeland, Carolyn Howard, Peggy Saunders, Sharon Prather; a son, William Burris; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two children, Joyce Marie Prather and Pfc. James Walter Prather. The Rev. Prather served at Poplar Grove for 42 years. Under his leadership, among numerous accomplishments, construction of a new worship facility was completed. He was also the recipient of numerous awards and a former member of the Board of Trustees at Suburban Hospital. Carr Marilynn Annette Carr, 65, of Damascus, died Dec. 7 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. She was the wife of Martin Allen Carr, her husband of 47 years. Born May 9, 1937, in Villefranche, France, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Winifred Forrest Campbell. In 1951 the family moved to Kensington, where she met and married her husband. In 1961 the Carr's moved to Damascus. Mrs. Carr devoted much of her time and talent to community service, most notably teaching Sunday school for 28 years; Girl Scouts, where she received an Outstanding Adult Volunteer Award and was described as one of the strongest forces in reviving and keeping Girl Scouting in upper Montgomery County; and AFS International Programs, where she was active in almost every area of the organization. She worked with the Girl Scouts of America until her death. Her passion for the community of El Bijague, Nicaragua, through the KAIROS mission group, brought her tremendous joy for many years. Survivors in addition to her husband include four children, the Rev. Clark Carr of Brunswick, Melanie Hardin of Fredericksburg, Va., Arlene Croft of Eldersburg and Dale Carr of Burnt Hills, N.Y.; two AFS Exchange children, Dinah Abbey of Accra, Ghana, and Mauricio Mendoza of Mexico City; one sister, Nancy Roberts of Camano Island, Wash.; one brother, Malcolm Campbell of Beaverton, Ore.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Moyer, 90, of Damascus, died Dec. 4 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Earl W. Moyer. Born June 5, 1912, in Damascus, she was a daughter of the late Nathan E. and Edith May Bowen Sheckels. Mrs. Moyer was a homemaker and attended Salem United Methodist Church in Cedar Grove. Duvall Helen Wetzel Duvall, 87, of Mount Airy, died Nov. 30 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She had lived at the Citizens Nursing Home in Frederick for a year. Born May 22, 1915, in Damascus, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Mamie Burriss Duvall. Survivors include five children, Violet Hopkins of Woodbine, Geneva Maiden of Ohio, Helen Wetzel of Georgia, Peggy Baugher and her husband, Brenton, of Damascus, and George Wetzel and his wife, Anna Mae, of Mt. Airy; one brother, Garry Duvall and his wife, Shirley, of Thurmont; 17 grandchildren; 21 great- grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She will also be remembered by special friend Ruth Gue. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Lillian Martin, Evelyn Burriss and Delma Mobley, and one brother, Charles Duvall. Crafton Mr. Emil E. Crafton, 88, of Gaithersburg, died Dec. 6, 2002, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Born July 26, 1914, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John Crafton and Mary Blacalak. He was the husband of Phyllis W. Crafton. Mr. Crafton worked for the U.S. Postal Service. He served in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1943. Survivors beside his wife include two children, Sandra Kemrer and David Crafton; one brother, Edward Crafton; one sister, Mary Sharp; and two grandchildren. A funeral service was held Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Gaithersburg. Burial will take place at 10 a.m. today at Resthaven Cemetery. Born Dec. 11, 1908, in Tennessee, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Emma Mathis Seal. She was the wife of the late James F. Givens Sr. Mrs. Givens attended school in Tennessee. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She owned and operated "Unity Store" (near Sunshine) in Unity until 1972. Mrs. Givens is survived by five children, Thelma R. Cooper of Sykesville, James T. Givens Jr. of Ellicott City, Charles J. Givens of Berkeley Springs, W. Va., Mary E. Howes of Hagerstown and Raymond T. Givens of Boonsboro; two sisters, Cornie Mathis of Georgia and Gladys Quesenberry of Westminster; 16 great grandchildren and six great, great grandchildren. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville. Richard B. Worley Mr. Richard Bryce Worley, 95, formerly of Gaithersburg, died Dec. 6 at Westport Convalescent Center in Richmond, Va. Born Nov. 21, 1907, in Washington Courthouse, Ohio, he was the son of the late Jesse Lee Worley and Maude Estella Craig. He was the husband of the late Ruth W. Worley, to whom he had been married for 60 years. Mr. Worley attended Oklahoma University and Oklahoma A & M and George Washington University Law School. He taught school briefly and served in the Navy during World War II. He was in the Naval Reserves following the war and received the "Man of the Year" Award in his unit in 1966. He retired from the Federal Government after working for the General Accounting Office for 30 years. Mr. Worley was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Aylett, Va. He was formerly a member of First Baptist Church of Vero Beach, Fla., and First Baptist Church of Delray Beach, Fla., and First Baptist Church of Gaithersburg, where he was a deacon. Mr. Worley is survived by four children, Richard Worley and his wife, Tantsie, Linda Fulks and her husband, John, Robert Worley and his wife, Dawn, and Barbara Worley and her husband, Jim Abeles; 10 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John D. Worley and Gordon C. Worley, and one sister, Charlotte W. Mollette. Mrs. Callahan, a resident of Bethesda for 58 years, was born in Washington, D.C. While a student at St. Patrick's High School in the District, she was president of the Tappa Beta Tau sorority. After graduation, Mrs. Callahan worked as an administrative assistant for the former WOL radio station in the District. During her years in Bethesda, she was active in Our Lady of Lourdes and Holy Redeemer Catholic parishes. Her husband of 44 years, John Warren Callahan, died in 1981. Survivors include four children, John Michael Callahan of California; Catherine Donvito of Rockville; Ellen Ann Callahan of Darnestown; and Mary Margaret Callahan of Frederick; one sister, Dorothy Bradley of Waldorf; and six grandchildren. *****Dec. 18, 2002***** Robert William Boody Robert William Boody, 80, of Vienna, Va., formerly of Potomac, died Dec. 2, at Veteran's Hospital in Washington, D.C. Mr. Boody served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in economics. He did extensive volunteer work in Potomac, both within his church and his community. He attended the Potomac Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He is survived by two sons, Eric E. Ann Catherine Boody of Vienna, and Robert M. and Amanda Boody of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Mann Boody. Horton, 71, of Westford, Mass., formerly of Potomac, died in Concord, Mass., on Dec. 4, from acute myelogenous leukemia. Born Feb. 16, 1931, in Waukegan, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Paul W. and Margaret (Beegle) Kaiser. She was the wife of Jackson R. Horton, to whom she had been married for 52 years. Mrs. Horton attended Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisc., where she met her future husband. A resident of McLean, Va., from 1957 until moving to Potomac in 1970, the couple moved to Massachusetts in 1982. During her years in Potomac, she raised three children and worked part-time. An active volunteer, she especially enjoyed her association with the Smithsonian Institute. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Connie H. Moynihan and her husband, David, of Potomac, and Melissa H. Cory and her husband, Chuck, of Irvine, Calif.; one son, Jackson R. Horton Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Reston, Va.; one brother, Paul W. Kaiser of Waukegan; eight grandchildren and 19 nieces and nephews. A memorial service and reception will be held at Potomac United Methodist Church, 10300 Falls Road, on Jan. 18. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. John Michael Taylor, 50, and his wife, Judy Lee Taylor, 51, of Twenty- Nine Palms, Calif., died as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on a California highway shortly before noon Nov. 23. A native of Rockville, Col. Taylor was a 1970 graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville and a 1975 graduate of the University of Maryland College Park before accepting his commission as a Marine second lieutenant via the Platoon Leaders Class program in 1976. His career spanned nearly 27 years. Col. Taylor is survived by his parents, John and Ann Taylor of Rockville; one brother, Patrick Taylor and wife Margy of Rockville; one sister, Sue Ketchum and husband Skip of Damascus; one son, Lance Cpl. Jordan Zachary Taylor and wife Krissie of Camp LeJeune, N.C.; one daughter, Andrea Lane Taylor of San Clemente, Calif.; a nephew and a nice; two grandchildren; a paternal grandmother, Pat Truville of Madison, Ind.; and numerous relatives and friends. A memorial services will be held at 12:45 p.m. Friday at Arlington National Cemetery. His wife of nearly 10 years was born in Springfield, Calif. In 1983 she received her degree as a registered nurse from College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif., and was a neonatal intensive care nurse. She is survived by her mother, Ethel Lunceford of Stockton, Mo.; three sisters, Cherryl Daugherty of Illinois, and Alicia Jones and Emily Cossins of Missouri; two sons, Shawnn and Shane Newman of Eureka, Calif.; and one grandchild. Services for Mrs. Taylor will be held in conjunction with her husband on Friday. Donald L. Sailors Donald Lewis Sailors, 69, of Damascus, died Dec. 14 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. He was the husband of Mary E. Sailors. Born June 14, 1933 in Marion, Ind., he was the son of the late Chester Earl and Delores Miller Sailors. Mr. Sailors served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. While serving in 1955, he was a member of the Army Color Guard and precision drill team that participated in the Presidential Parades. He was a member of the Damascus American Legion Post 171. He worked for the Clyde W. Dent Company for 38 years until his retirement in 1998. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Susan Stapp of Laurel, Del., and Mary Beth Cavell and her husband, Michael, of New Market; one sister, Faye Sailors of Marion, Ind.; one brother, Bob Sailors of Orlando, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Mr. Sailors was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna L. Sailors. Memorial services will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Germantown Baptist Church, 17640 Riffleford Road, Germantown, Md. 20874. The Rev. Curry Mitchell will officiate. Private burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Germantown Baptist Church. Julie M. Faglie Julie Marie Faglie, 25, of Germantown, died Dec. 13 in Baltimore from injuries she sustained when she was hit by a car a day earlier. Born Dec. 17, 1976, in Viapalligo, Italy, she was a daughter of Gerald C. Faglie and Cheryl Ann Ramsey. Ms. Faglie graduated from Watkins Mill High School in 1998 and worked as a merchandising clerk for Kids R Us children's store at the Milestone Center in Germantown. Survivors in addition to her father include one sister, Laura Ann McMurray; stepmother, Faye Faglie; and grandmother, Nancy Ramsey. Friends may call at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 27015 Ridge Road, Damascus, Thursday from 7 p.m. until the time of service at 8 p.m. Burial will be private. Robert A. Bullock Robert A. Bullock, 38, of Silver Spring died Dec. 15, 2002. He is survived by his wife Michele Bullock, children Bobby and Alex, parents Robert F. and Marilyn Bullock; sisters Barbara Bullock, Cindy Conte and Linda Gold, brother David Bullock and in-laws Mary Gonzales, Ryan and Fermin and Teresa Gonzales.
