She had been a cafeteria worker at the Montgomery County Board of Education. Born Aug. 19, 1913, in Kensington, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Cecilia Scott Marsh. She is survived by a daughter, Frieda Kaplan; a son, John W. Boswell Sr., 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren. Services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Luby K. Royce Luby K. Royce, 88, of Gaithersburg, died June 26, 2003, at Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg. Born Aug. 7, 1914, in Jersey City, N.J., she was the wife of the late Milton Joseph Royce, who died in 1985. Mrs. Royce was a homemaker and lived in the Lake Hiawatha section of Parsippany, N.J., from 1943 before moving to Gaithersburg in 1981. She was a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Boonton. She volunteered many hours in the activities department at the Asbury Methodist Village and in the styling salon. Because of her hours of dedication, she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the state of Maryland, signed by Gov. William Donald Schaeffer. Mrs. Royce is survived by a daughter, Patricia T. Ritter of Rockville; a sister, Martha Barnett of Decatur, Ga.; two grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Aaron Thomas Richard Aaron, 57, of Darnestown, died July 1, 2003, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, of coronary artery disease. Born March 15, 1946, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of James P. and Margaret K. Aaron of Middletown, N.J. He was the husband of Carol A. Aaron. Mr. Aaron earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Maryland and held a juris doctorate degree from the University of Baltimore Law School. He worked in the computer industry for 33 years and was employed with IBM at the time of his death. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Aaron is survived by two children, John P. "J.P." Aaron and Stephanie C. Aaron; one brother, James P. Aaron III of Cape Cod, Mass.; and one sister, Christine A. Irwin of Red Bank, N.J.; and many other family members and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today at Our Lady of Visitation Catholic Church, 14135 Seneca Road, Darnestown. Hartmann, 67, a resident of Montgomery Village since 1998, died July 2, 2003, in Rockville. Dr. Hartmann was born March 16, 1936, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late Alois Hartmann and Margaret Schenk. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Elena Hartmann; one son, Anthony Hartmann of Washington, D.C.; and one daughter, Monica Hartmann of St. Paul, Minn. Dr. Hartmann was a structural engineer with Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Nuclear Energy. He taught civil engineering at Marquette University from 1966- 74. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Sigma XI. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Gaithersburg. Blair John Richard "Dicky" Blair, 61, of Ijamsville, formerly of Gaithersburg and Rockville, died in Rockville on July 3, 2003 from head injuries he sustained when he fell from a ladder at work. Born May 5, 1942, in Gaithersburg, he was a son of the late Dwight M. and Bessie Stevens Blair. He was the husband of Ruby M. Blair. They were married 38 years. Mr. Blair attended Sherwood High School and worked as a roofer for H.T. Harrison Roofing Co. in Rockville, where he was a superintendent. He had been with the company 47 years. His hobbies included auto racing, and he was a Dallas Cowboys fan. Survivors in addition to his wife include two children, Kenneth R. Blair of Ijamsville and Troy J. Blair of Buckeystown; three sisters, Gert Evans of Frederick, Pat Mayne of Mount Airy, Joanne Wyatt of Sykesville and Sandy Blair of Hampstead; and two brothers, Jerry Blair of Finksburg and Larry Blair of Germantown. Carter, 66, of Rockville died June 28, 2003, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. Born June 8, 1937, in Rockville, he was the husband of N. Lois Carter. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three brothers, Carl, Robert and Eugene Carter, all of Rockville; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were private. Snowden Funeral Home in Rockville handled the arrangements. Walter H. Nicholson Walter Herbert Nicholson, 82, of Silver Spring died of lung cancer on June 3, 2003, at Casey House Hospice in Derwood. He was born in McLeod, Mont., and graduated from San Francisco State University. After service in the Army Signal Corps as a cryptographer in the Pacific Theater during World War II, he returned to San Francisco and signed up as a job analyst with Tapline in Ras El Mish and the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO) in Saudi Arabia for eight years. After Saudi Arabia, he served the U.S. State Department in the Food for Peace Program for International Development with assignments in Tunisia, Morocco, Laos, Philippines, Senegal, Haiti and the Ivory Coast. He retired in 1980. After his foreign service, he was the owner of Speedy Printing Center in Wheaton (later renamed Wheaton Printing Company) from September 1981 to November 1996. Mr. Nicholson was an avid reader, world traveler, and classical music and opera enthusiast. He was a member of the Aspen Hill Club and American Legion Post 268 in Wheaton. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mildred Fleming Nicholson of Silver Spring; two brothers, Charles Nicholson of Livingston, Mont., and John Nicholson of Bozeman, Mont.; and two sisters, Dorothy Hooper and Margaret Brown of Big Timber, Mont. Hugh Thomas Barker Hugh Thomas Barker, 63, of Webster Springs, W.Va., and formerly of Gaithersburg, died July 9, 2003, at his home. Mr. Barker worked for R.D. Bean Roofing in Beltsville. He was born on May 18, 1940, in Fayette County, W.Va. He was the son of the late Molly Tompkins and Herbert Barker. He was an avid outdoorsman and a huge Redskins football fan. Beall Sr., 84, of Gaithersburg died July 15, 2003, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. Born Jan. 2, 1919, in Poolesville, he was the son of the late Marion T. and Carrie G. Beall. He was the husband of Muriel H. Beall. Mr. Beall graduated from Gaithersburg High School and was a retired farmer and Montgomery County school bus driver. Besides his wife, Mr. Beall is survived by two sons, Ralph Beall and his wife, Nancy, of Adamstown and Benjamin G. Beall Jr. and his wife, Gigi, of Gaithersburg; three daughters, Sharon Beall and Kathleen Whisner of Gaithersburg and Sandra Beall of Rockville; three sisters; one brother; six grandsons; and nine great grandchildren. David Ezekiel Helen C. Ferguson Helen C. Ferguson, 87, of Gaithersburg, died July 10, 2003, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital from lung cancer. Born April 15, 1916, in New York, she was the wife of the late Joseph B. Ferguson II. Mrs. Ferguson was a graduate of Hunter College in New York and worked in business administration in New York until her marriage. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Ferguson is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Berry of Gaithersburg; one son, Joseph B. Ferguson III of Delaware; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister. A memorial service was held July 15 at Guild Memorial Chapel at Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg. Burial will be in Pennsylvania. Greenwalt Bruce Gregory Greenwalt, 54, of Gaithersburg died July 11, 2003, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney after a long illness. Born April 13, 1949, in Front Royal, Va., he was the son of Janet Updike Greenwalt of Pawleys Island, S.C., and the late Charles E. Greenwalt. Mr. Greenwalt was a supervisor for an electronic manufacturing company. Besides his mother, Mr. Greenwalt is survived by one brother, Charles C. Linamen Michael Aaron Linamen, 22, of Montgomery Village, died June 17,2003, at Suburban Hospital from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Born Dec. 1, 1980, at Sibley Hospital, he was the son of Betsy Klieger-Linamen and Randy Linamen. Mr. Linamen was a 1999 graduate of Watkins Mill High School, where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. He also attended Montgomery College. He joined the Maryland National Guard, Battalion 115 Infantry and was deployed for one year after Sept. 11, 2001. He was a member of the Watkins Mill Elementary School chorus and performed at the Kennedy Center Honors and sang with Michael Jackson at the Presidential Inaugural Gala in 1984. Besides his parents, Mr. Linamen is survived by his grandparents, Jean L. Klieger and Jack and Hazel Linamen; two uncles, Mark Klieger and Mark Linamen; and one aunt Karen Mullins. Mr. Linamen was preceded in death by his grandfather, Walter A. Klieger. Funeral services were held June 22. Burial was in Washington, D.C., with full honors. Born Nov. 7, 1942, in Rahway, N.J., he was a son of the late Edward C. Ling and Cathryn Allers Ling Ayers. He was the husband of Greer Prevatte. Mr. Ling graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1966 and worked as a senior systems analyst until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the University of North Carolina Alumni Association and Educational Foundation and a Methodist. Besides his wife, Mr. Ling is survived by one son, Steve Ling of Gaithersburg; one daughter, Becky Ling of Gaithersburg; one stepson, Ryan Malone of Anderson, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Gina Malone-Amato of Tryon, N.C., and Tami Ponder of Columbus, N.C.; one brother, Doug Ayers of Long Valley, N.J.; one stepbrother, Ralph Ayers of Port Isabel, Texas; one aunt, Roberta Wynings of Belle Meade, N.J.; and two step-granddaughters. He was an active sportsman and a member of the Izaak Walton League. Lucille Elizabeth Gundersen Lucille Elizabeth Gundersen, 65, of Wheaton died of cancer July 5, 2003. She had been an administrative assistant at Rolling Ridge Conference Center in North Andover, Mass. and later at the Homophile Community Health Center in Boston. In the 1980s and 1990s in Washington, D.C., she worked at Women's Strike for Peace, the Commission on Civil Rights, the National Autism Society, the National Institutes for Health, the Treasury Department, and in the IRS Inspection Services. Ms. Gundersen was a member of Christ Congregational Church in Silver Spring, and also Exeter Congregational Church in Exeter, N.H. She was born Dec. 16, 1937, in Mt. Vernon, N.Y. Ms. Gundersen is survived by her beloved partner of 23 years, Arleen Lopes of Wheaton. She is also survived by daughter and son-in-law Debra and Paul Stewart; son Frederick Gundersen and his partner Deborah Greer of Seabrook, N.H.; son and daughter-in-law Wesley Gundersen and Deb Bunting of Newton, N.H.; daughter and son-in-law Luanne and David Wilczynski of Exeter, N.H.; and former daughter-in- law Linda Lentine of Sandown, N.H., and her children, Tory and Amanda Gundersen; her sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and James Green of Lancaster, Pa.; her brother, Julius Hertsch of Haines City, Fla., and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. *****July 23, 2003***** Julia Davis Kirkman Julia Davis Kirkman, 95, a resident of Asbury Methodist Village, Wilson Healthcare Center, Gaithersburg, died at Asbury on July 7, 2003. Mrs. Kirkman was a resident of Gaithersburg from 1937 until the early 1970s when she moved to Rehoboth Beach, Del. She remained in Rehoboth Beach until about 1986 when she moved to Asbury Methodist Village, where she remained until her death. She was born Aug. 29, 1906, in Marshall, Va. She was married to A. Gwinn Kirkman Sr. who died in 1957. Mrs. Kirkman is survived by three sons, A. Gwinn Kirkman Jr. of Amherst, Va., G. Clark Kirkman and Hunter A. Kirkman, both of Gaithersburg; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. In Gaithersburg, Mrs. Kirkman was active in the parish at Episcopal Church of the Ascension. She was one of the founders of "The Attic," a second hand shop established in 1968 and operated by the church from 1968 until June 2003, when it closed. Funeral services were held on July 10 at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 205 S. Summit Ave., Gaithersburg. Burial followed at Forest Oak Cemetery in Gaithersburg. Virginia Clark Waas Virginia Clark Waas of Montgomery Village died July 17, 2003, after a long illness with cancer. She was the wife of the late William F. Waas. Mrs. Waas was born in Connecticut where she attended Milford schools and secretarial college. Mrs. Waas was the daughter of Henry and Amy (Wilcox) Clark of Milford. While living in Annapolis, Mrs. Waas served as a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program for several years. She was a retiree of the Montgomery County government and member of the NARFE chapters in both Annapolis and Gaithersburg. Mrs. Waas is survived by her three sons, Peter of Fredericksburg, Va., David of Gaithersburg, and Christopher of Port Orchard, Wash.; and six grandchildren. A memorial service was held Saturday at the chapel located in the Wilson Health Care Center at Asbury Methodist Village, 301 Russell Ave., Gaithersburg. Altobelli Matthew John Altobelli, 18, of Olney died June 27, 2003, in an ATV accident in Damascus. Born June 18, 1935 in Paris, Idaho, he was the son of the late Wilford and Ada Foster Budge. He was the husband of Nola Budge. Mr. Budge was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Heflin Cierston Crist Heflin, 18, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Damascus, died July 18, 2003, in Gaithersburg. Born Nov. 20, 1984, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Gary E. Heflin of Gaithersburg and Caprice C. Bailey of Damascus. Ms. Heflin was a 2003 graduate of James Madison High School in Atlanta, Ga., and was preparing to leave for Army service today. Besides her parents, Ms. Heflin is survived by two sisters, Jessica Puttkammer of Richmond, Va., and Stacie Heflin of Frederick; one brother, Gary E. Heflin Jr. of Damascus; paternal grandparents, Eugene and Madeline Heflin of Bedford, Pa.; and maternal grandparents, Carmen Hansen of Damascus and Herbert J. Bailey of Arizona. Josie M. B. Paskins Josie M. B. Paskins, 85, of Potomac died July 12, 2003, at Suburban Hospital of complications following a fall at home. Mrs. Paskins was born in Southampton, England, and married Stanley Paskins in 1939. During World War II, Mrs. Paskins worked as a financial analyst for Vickers-Armstrong Ltd. where her husband was an aircraft design engineer on the Spitfire-G program. In 1952, Mrs. Paskins immigrated to Canada, and lived with her husband and daughter in Montreal. Following the death of her husband in 1965, she returned to work as a financial analyst for Shell Oil in Montreal, and later as an office manager for Office Overload. In 1977, she immigrated to the United States, and lived in Boston with her daughter and son-in-law. The family moved to Potomac in 1991, where she lived until her death. She enjoyed interior decorating, gardening, the culinary arts, and was an avid creator of tapestries and a skilled fashion designer. She loved being by the sea and enjoyed visiting the family vacation home in Naples, Fla. Mrs. Paskins is survived by her daughter, Dr. Andrea Jeanne Paskins-Hurlburt of Potomac. Daniel Gibbons Rice Jr. Daniel Gibbons Rice Jr., 81, of Gaithersburg, died July 15, 2003, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born Nov. 30, 1921, in Washington, D.C., to Daniel Rice Sr. and Florence Pyles Rice, he was raised on a farm in Temple Hills. He was the husband of 54 years of Betty Harlan Rice of Gaithersburg. Mr. Rice was a graduate of the University of Maryland and did graduate work in radio at Northwestern University. During the 1940s, Mr. Rice worked as a radio announcer at WWDC, Washington, D.C.; WFMD, Frederick; WMMN, Fairmont, W.Va.; and WSAN, Allentown, Pa. He also served as an Armed Forces Radio Service Announcer at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Following his work in radio, Mr. Rice was a press officer at the National Institutes of Health and public information officer at the National Institute of Mental Health. Born July 8, 1915, in Gaithersburg, she was the daughter of the late George A. Gloyd Sr. and Alice E. Wallach. She was the wife of the late Robert Bayha, who died in 1978. Mrs. Bayha is survived by one son, Robert S. Bayha of Denver, Colo.; one brother, George A. Gloyd Jr. of Preston, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bayha was preceded in death by two sisters, Anne L. Trevey and Katherine V. Claxton; and two brothers, John S. Gloyd and Carlton A. Gloyd. Inurnment will be in the cemetery at St. Rose of Lima Church, Gaithersburg, in early September. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to a fund of choice. Arrangements were made by All-States Cremation Service, Wheat Ridge, Colo. Alvin L. Fritz Alvin L. "Butch" Fritz, 59, of Damascus died July 21, 2003, at Montgomery General Hospital. He was the husband of Louise B. Fritz. Born in Frederick on Jan. 13, 1944, he was the son of Alvin L. Poole of Frederick and the late Rhoda Ellen Crummit. Mr. Fritz was the owner of the Olde Towne Restaurant and Catering in Mount Airy for the past eight years. Before that, he worked for Tom and Ray's restaurant in Damascus for 13 years. Surviving in addition to his wife and father are children Corby Fowler and her husband Charles of Frederick, Monica German and her husband Troy of Frederick, and Bruce Fritz of New Market; three grandchildren; brothers Jim Fritz of Oklahoma and Charles Fritz of Frederick; sisters Betty Conaway of Baltimore, Mary Brashear of West Virginia, Pat Rhinecker of Damascus, Ella Mae Bolton of Damascus and Sally Dodd of Mount Airy. Arrangements were handled by the Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus. James P. Boutiette James P. Boutiette, 72, of Gaithersburg died July 21, 2003, of cancer at Montgomery Hospice Casey House. Born June 17, 1931, in Northridge, Mass., he was the son of L. Clarence and Clara M. Boutiette. He was the husband of Nancy Boutiette for 49 years, and was a resident of Montgomery County for 31 years. Mr. Boutiette was raised in Grafton, Mass., and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He received a bachelor of science degree cum laude from the University of Massachusetts and was awarded a master of business administration degree from the Graduate School of Management at Boston University in 1958. Mr. Boutiette began his business career with Westinghouse Electric as an administrator of indirect labor standards. He worked as a management consultant with Booz, Allen & Hamilton from 1965-69 and joined Pepsico, Inc., in 1969 as a senior consulting manager. In 1972 he joined the management staff at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., and retired from the board in 1992. He volunteered in community service including Habitat For Humanity, The Lord's Table at St. Martin of Tours and Gaithersburg Help. Besides his wife, Mr. Boutiette is survived by four children, Elizabeth Twomey, Martha and James C. Boutiette, all of Gaithersburg, and John C. Boutiette of Cameron, Mo.; and two grandsons. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 9000 Warfield Road, Gaithersburg.
