Weifenbach Phyllis Marjorie Weifenbach, 90, a longtime resident of Wheaton, died Nov. 17, 2003, at the Randolph Hills Nursing Center in Wheaton. Ms. Weifenbach was a speech therapist for Montgomery County Public Schools Speech and Language Services. After retiring in 1978, she was active in dance groups at Montgomery County senior centers. Ms. Weifenbach attended the University of Wisconsin, Northwestern University, University of Maryland and San Francisco State College. She was born June 25, 1913, in South Dakota to the late Philip Loren Hudson and Clara Mae King Hudson. She is survived by her daughter Terri Weifenbach, a brother, Robert Wayne Hudson, and a sister, Helen Hudson Ziemer. At Ms. Weifenbach's request, there will be no services. C. Bradner Brown C. Bradner Brown, 93, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Kensington, died Sept. 18, 2003. Born March 11, 1910, in Wisconsin, he was the husband of the late Patty Brown, who died in 1999. They had been married 41 years. Mr. Brown, a physicist and electrical engineer, worked at the Naval Ordinance Lab and retired in the mid-1970s. He held several patents for acoustic and sonar devices. The Browns were active in Rock Creek Hills Citizens Association and Kensington Garden Club. They supported three new Quaker schools in Maryland, and the creation of Noyes Library in Kensington. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Spring Friends Meeting, 17715 Meeting House Road, Sandy Spring. Arrangements were handled by Rapp Funeral Home in Silver Spring. Thomas W. Fisher Thomas W. Fisher, 82, of Boyds, died Nov. 30, 2003, at his home after a long illness. Born Aug. 22, 1921, in Rockville, he was the son of Gary Fisher and Mattie Connelly. He was the husband of Sheila A. Fisher for 38 years. Mr. Fisher served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946. He was an electrical engineer and worked at David Taylor Model Basin for 32 years. Mr. Fisher was a member of the Izaak Walton League, 4-H Sheep & Swine, VFW Post 9862 and American Legion Post 247. Survivors in addition to his wife include four children, Lois A. Covati and her husband, Fred, of Middletown, Md., Christine Fisher Berman, and her husband, Mike, of Gaithersburg, Patricia Morris and her husband, Pat, of Gaithersburg, and Elizabeth Moxley and her husband, Kris, of Spotsylvania, Va., and six grandchildren. Deavers Jr. William Henry "Bill" Deavers Jr., 79, of Damascus, died Nov. 28, 2003, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born June 26, 1924, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late William H. Sr. and Esther Becker Deavers. He was the husband of Mary C. Deavers. Mr. Deavers served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving most of his time in Europe. He worked for General Services Administration in Washington, D.C., and retired after 38 years of service. He was a life member of the Westminster Moose Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Frederick, and the American Legion of Brunswick. He was a social member of the Eagles of Brunswick. His hobbies included bird watching and Southern gospel music. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Jerry Deavers and his former wife, Carol, of Waynesboro, Pa., Danny Deavers and his wife, Laurie, of Hagerstown, a stepson, Danny Pendergraft and his wife, Terry, of Knoxville; one brother, Gene Deavers of Lodi, Calif.; one sister, Madeline Spaulding of Delaware; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. Margaret White Riggs Margaret White Riggs, 87, of Laytonsville, died Nov. 25, 2003, at Casey House in Rockville. Born April 12, 1916, in Laytonsville, she was a daughter of the late Harry G. and Margaret Riggs White. She was the wife of the late Douglas Howard Riggs Jr. who died in 1974. Mrs. Riggs attended Gaithersburg High School. She was a homemaker. She was a lifetime member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Laytonsville and a member of the Ladies Guild of St. Bartholomew's. Mrs. Riggs is survived by a son, Douglass H. Riggs III and his wife Teresa of Rockville; two daughters, Nancy R. Harding and her husband Robert of Laytonsville and Linda A. Smith and her husband Charles of Buffalo Mills, Pa.; three sisters, Alverda Wotthlie of Baltimore, Mary Hine of Gaithersburg and Anne King of Thurmont; a brother, Richard T. White of Mt. Box 5005, Laytonsville, MD 20882 J. Willard Woodfield J. Willard Woodfield, 83, of Damascus, died Nov. 21, 2003, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born Jan. 6, 1920, in Damascus, he was the son of the late J. Leslie and Clyta B. Mullineaux Woodfield. He was the husband of Elizabeth A. Woodfield for 42 years. Mr. Woodfield was a 1938 graduate of Damascus High School and an honor graduate of Strayer College of Accounting in Washington, D.C. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served as a master sergeant in the 58th Finance Disbursement Unit, stationed in England. On D-Day, he and his unit went ashore with the invasion and marched through Europe to Germany. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal citation. Mr. Woodfield was a custom kitchen designer and owner of Damascus Electric Company. He began working in the family business on Saturdays and weekends at the age of 14. Sixty years later he retired. Mr. Woodfield was a member of American Legion Post 171, Damascus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Club. Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Patricia A. Stovall and her husband, Robert, of Gaithersburg; two sons, Bruce E. Woodfield of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Douglas L. Woodfield and his wife, Robin, of Toms River, N.J.; one brother, Vincent Woodfield and one sister, Dorothy M. Browning, both of Mount Airy; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Molesworth, P.A. Funeral Home, Damascus. Thomas J. Lambert Thomas J. Lambert, 76, of Olney died Nov. 30, 2003, at Montgomery General Hospital. Born June 28, 1927, in Jamaica, N.Y., he was the son of the late Helen and Thomas Lambert. He was the husband of Doris Lambert for 51 years. Mr. Lambert, a retired advertising executive, was an Olney resident for 36 years. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Iowa during World War II. After retiring from many years in the advertising business, he became a volunteer at Montgomery General Hospital, where he served for almost two decades. In addition to volunteering, he was a member of the Board of Directors and was employed part time as a unit clerk on the hospital's Mental Health Unit. Besides his wife, Mr. Lambert is survived by four daughters, Ruth Schwartz and her husband Steve of Florence, Mont., Barbara Evans and her husband Robert of Damascus, Lois Cotone of Olney and Janet Frey and her husband Randy of Olney; two sisters, Helen Hunter and Joan Smyth; a brother, Robert Lambert; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born July 29, 1914, in Montgomery County, he was the son of the late Jesse G. and Orida (King) Ward. Mr. Ward served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked on the family farm on Travilah Road for almost 50 years. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Rockville and held many titles and offices within the church. He helped establish Redland Baptist Church. Mr. Ward is survived by one brother, Ira Ward of Derwood; one sister, Jane W. Pietrosewicz of Silver Spring; and several nieces and nephews. He was the husband of Janice Borgen. Mr. Borgen served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a real estate agent and a barber. He was a member of the Polish Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Salvation Army. Survivors in addition to his wife include four children, Gloria Gonsalves of Ormond Beach, Fla., Brian Meushaw of Jessup, Tamara Medina of Frederick and Mark Borgen of Germantown; two sisters; three brothers; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Arrangements were made by Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville. John J. Rooney Retired Col. John Joseph Rooney, 76, died Dec. 10, 2003, at his home in Gaithersburg. He was the husband of Keiko Onodera Rooney. Born March 22, 1927, in Johnstown, Pa., he was a son of the late Charles J. and Margaret Timothy Rooney. At 17, Col. Rooney joined the Army Air Corp and continued his service until the end of World War II. He then re-enlisted in the U.S. Army and served honorably until his retirement in 1971. While in the Army he earned a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 1951. He married his wife Keiko in 1955. In 1971 the Rooneys moved to Gaithersburg. Col. Rooney was hired by the Montgomery County government. While employed by the county he began teaching at American University. After retiring from the county he was hired by Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., to teach in 1980. In 1984 he returned to the Washington area where he became a full-time professor at American University and Johns Hopkins University. Besides his wife, Col. Rooney is survived by three children, Patrick Rooney and his wife Kathleen of Germantown, Ruth Hopkins and her husband Gary of Monrovia and Kathleen Greene and her husband Jonathan of Gaithersburg; six grandchildren; and four sisters and one brother. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Dec.15 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Libertytown,. The Rev. John A. Dietzenbach officiated. Parks Sr. She was the wife of James R. Elliott. Mrs. Elliott graduated from Pikesville High School in 1990 and from Frostburg State University in 1994. She was a juvenile counselor for the Maryland Department of Juvenile Justice. She had been a resident of Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg, for the last 10 years. She was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Frederick, the daughter of the late George W. Hooper and Anna Mary Simmons. She was married to Glenn E. Gilliam, also of Asbury Methodist Village, for 63 years. Besides her husband, Mrs. Gilliam is survived by two daughters, Carole Lee Hubbard and her husband David of Richmond, Va., and Judith Ann Willard and her husband Donald of Madison, Va.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and her sister, Margaret Butcher. Leonard Edgar Tolley Albert Stewart Benson Albert Stewart Benson, 80, of Mount Airy, formerly of Brookeville, died Dec. 9, 2003, at Lorien of Mount Airy. Born June 2, 1923, in Brookeville, he was the son of the late Thomas Marlow Benson and Rosa L. Benson Brown. Mr. Benson attended Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring. He worked for the General Services Administration of the U.S. government as an electrician and retired after 27 years of service. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Brookeville. Veterans Hospital. Born in 1920, he was the son of the late Lester Oman Colvin and Sally Francis Carpenter Colvin. Mr. Colvin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a retired construction superintendent. Survivors include two daughters, Sally K. Colvin of Rockville and Cindy L. Colvin of Dustin, Fla.; four sons, Arthur E. Colvin Jr., George D. Colvin and David R. Colvin, all of Mount Airy, and Robert O. Calvin of Virginia Beach; one sister, Odie Jenkins of Alexandria; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Colvin and Lelan Colvin, and a sister, Virginia "Jenny" Nelson Colvin. Sheeler, 86, of Sandy Spring died Dec. 14, 2003, at Friends Nursing Home in Sandy Spring. Born Jan. 20, 1917, in San Antonio, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Ethel A. Jones Frakes. She was the wife of the late Edward E. Sheeler, who died in 1987. Mrs. Sheeler was the Medicare director at Holy Cross Hospital and retired in 1973 after 25 years of service. She was an active member of Ashton United Methodist Church, where she served on many committees and was a member of the United Methodist Women. Her hobbies included poetry, sewing and bird watching. Survivors include three daughters, Diane Bucia of Hagerstown, Constance McKain of Mount Airy and Gwen Johnson and husband Gary of Arlington, Texas; and four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. "Sis" Richard, 74, a longtime resident of Damascus, died Dec. 14, 2003, at her home after a brief illness with cancer. Born April 9, 1929, in Mount Airy, she was the daughter of the late John Peter and Helen DeGrange Hull. She was the wife of E. Tucker Richard. Mrs. Richard was a member of Damascus United Methodist Church. Survivors in addition to her husband include one son, Gary C. Richard of Damascus; one daughter, Linda Kay R. Videtto and her husband, Daniel, of Damascus; a half-sister, Joan DeGano of Abingdon; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph F. Hull. Leonard Edgar Tolley Leonard Edgar Tolley, 77, of Monrovia, a former Damascus resident and teacher at Damascus High School, died Dec. 11, 2003, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He was the husband of Anne Merricks Tolley. Born in Lexington, Va., on Dec. 26, 1925, he was the son of the late Roscoe and Susie Tolley. He served in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy as an aviation mechanic during World War II. He started college in 1947 at Virginia Tech, where he met his wife. They married on his birthday in 1949. Mr. Tolley taught high school in Spottswood and Edinburg, Va., from 1951 to 1956. He and his family moved to the Damascus area where he taught agriculture, vocational agriculture and horticulture at Damascus High School in 1956. He retired as the community school coordinator in 1979. He was also director of Business of Farming and an advisor to the Damascus High School chapter of the Future Farmers of America; he guided the chapter to numerous state and national awards. Mr. Tolley served with distinction in numerous organizations in Damascus. He became a life member of the Lions Club where he achieved "King Lion" status. He was a former commander and life member of the Damascus American Legion and served for a time as chaplain of VFW Post 19976. He was active in the Damascus Methodist Church and was a member of multiple organizations such as the Garden Club (charter member), National Teachers Association, Montgomery County Teachers Association, Montgomery County Cotillion Club, Frederick Home Builders Association and many others. After he retired from the Montgomery County school system, Mr. Tolley and his wife became successful real estate developers and home builders. Survivors besides his wife and children include his brother Joe Tolley; his three sisters, Ruby Thomas Tolley of Alexandria, Va., Virginia Moschler and Florence Mohler; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Beard Donald Sinclair Beard, a resident of the New Market and Damascus areas for more than 30 years, died Dec. 17, 2003, from complications due to leukemia. Born in 1931 in Long Island, N.Y., Mr. Beard attended Roslyn High School and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor of science degree in biology. Mr. Beard retired in 1990 after more than 30 years of federal government work as a nuclear engineer. At the time of his retirement, he served at the U.S. Department of Energy as chief of the Plasma Technologies Branch where he was involved in developing technologies needed to create, heat and contain fusion plasmas. Following his retirement, Mr. Beard worked with Celsion Corporation, a biotech company. He is survived by his wife, Judy; children J. Alan Beard and his wife, Cheryl, Peter Beard and his wife, Jamie, Mary Ann Beard, and Molly and John Virts II; a brother, Arthur Beard and his wife, Joan; and three grandchildren. His first wife of 35 years, Nancy Foscue Beard, his parents, Agnes and James Beard and his sister, Ann McCaul, predeceased Mr. Beard. Funeral services were held Monday at Damascus United Methodist Church, Damascus, with burial in the church cemetery. Lawnicki Orien L. Lawnicki, 88, died Dec. 21, 2003, at her home in Damascus. Born July 25, 1915, in Detroit, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Mildred Herig Ringat. Twice married, she was the wife of the late Earl Gronau and the late Ted Lawnicki. Survivors include four daughters, Kaye Duvall of Damascus, Sharon Guyer of Thurmont, Dee Shoemaker of Frederick and Jan Witowski of Avondale, Ariz.; one son, Terry Gronau of Plymouth, Mich.; one sister, Fay Domzalski of Damascus; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Earlene Copeland, and a brother, Earl Mavis. Services and burial will be private. Day Edna May Beall Day, 90, a lifelong resident of the Damascus area, died Dec. 17, 2003, at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, where she was living at Citizens Nursing Home. Born April 11, 1913, in Lewisdale, she was a daughter of the late Leslie G. and Bessie Lewis Beall. She was the wife of the late James W. Day, who died in May. They were married for 72 years. Mrs. Day attended the one-room schoolhouse in Lewisdale and later completed the Rural Women's Short Course at the University of Maryland in June 1930. Mrs. Day was a lifelong homemaker and an active member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, where she served as communion steward for many years and was a dedicated member of the United Methodist Women. Her hobbies included birdwatching. Survivors include four children, Evelyn Hilton and her husband, Robert, of Damascus, Ginny Locke and her husband, Reuben, of Mercersburg, Pa., MaryJane Walter and her husband, Allan, of Gaithersburg, and James R. Day and his wife, Helen K. of Clarksburg; one brother, Rudell Beall of Clarksburg; two sisters, Helen Linthicum of Dickerson and Betty Day and her husband, James M., of Ijamsville; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Bryan Walter, one great-grandson, Matthew Rhodes, two sisters-in-law, Joyce Beall and Ruth Beall, and one brother-in-law, Charles Linthicum. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Bethesda United Methodist Church, Damascus. The Rev. Henry Butler and Kevin Beall officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
