She was the wife of James W. Day, who died in May. They were married on Christmas Eve 72 years ago. Born April 11, 1913, in Lewisdale, she was a daughter of the late Leslie G. and Bessie Lewis Beall. Under auspices of Montgomery County, Mrs. Day was foster mother to six children. Later, she provided daycare for her first great-grandson, Scott Brown. Mrs. Day is survived by four children, Evelyn Hilton and her husband Robert of Damascus, Ginny Locke and her husband Reuben of Mercersburg, Pa., MaryJane Walter and her husband Allan of Gaithersburg and James R. (Rudy) Day and his wife Helen K. (Cici) of Clarksburg; one brother, Rudell Beall of Clarksburg; two sisters, Helen Linthicum of Dickerson and Betty Day and husband James M. of Ijamsville; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Day was preceded in death by one grandson, Bryan Walter; one great-grandson, Matthew Rhodes; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Beall and Ruth Beall; and one brother-in-law, Charles Linthicum. Funeral services were held Dec. 20 at the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Damascus, with the Rev. Henry Butler and Kevin Beall officiating. June Murphy Hoyle June Murphy Hoyle, 77, of Gaithersburg, died Dec. 20, 2003, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born March 15, 1926, in Vidette, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Hubert Edward and Ruby Murphy Mays. She was the wife of Joseph Elmer Hoyle. Mrs. Hoyle graduated from Girard High School in Girard, Ga., and also from Augusta Business School in Augusta, Ga., in 1942. She had worked as a secretary for the Montgomery County Board of Education for 25 years until retirement. She was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church in Gaithersburg. Besides her husband, she is survived by four children, Sandra L. Stevens and her husband Ronald of Frostburg, Joseph Michael Hoyle and his wife Brenda of Pennsylvania, Barry Edward Hoyle and his wife Marisa of Hagerstown and Gary Eugene Hoyle and his wife Betty of Frederick; two sisters, Jackie Hill and Arnoldine Loren, both of Georgia; 12 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Marilyn Dinsmore Marilyn Dinsmore, 82, of Silver Spring died Dec. 19, 2003. An active Republican in Montgomery County, she was the former president of the Olney and Leisure World Republican clubs. Born Oct. 16, 1921, in Swampscott, Mass., Mrs. Dinsmore was a graduate of Emerson College. She was active in the U.S.O. during World War II. After her marriage to Earl "Dinny" Dinsmore in 1953, she became the director of personnel for Encyclopedia Britannica in Chicago and later a buyer for Neiman-Marcus in Dallas. They moved to Maryland in 1959. She is survived by her husband; daughter, Denise Glass, and her husband, Jeffrey of Ellicott City; and son, David Dinsmore, and his wife, Stephanie of Forest Hill; and four grandchildren. *****Jan. 9, 2004***** Gertrude J. Schiller Mrs. Gertrude J. Schiller, 85, of Gaithersburg, died on Jan. 5, 2004, at Casey House in Rockville. Born Sept. 25, 1918 in New York, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Frances Durney Lyons. She was the wife of the late Jerome Schiller. Mrs. Schiller attended school in New York and worked for J.C. Penney Co. as a comptometer (operator). Survivors include one daughter, Jean F. Funes Cordova Mr. Sonny Anthony Funes Cordova, 18, of Laytonsville, died Dec. 31, 2003, in a car accident in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Born Feb. 8, 1985, in Silver Spring, he was the son of Santiago and Sonia Funes. Mr. Funes was a 2003 graduate of James Hubert Blake High School, where he was a member of the baseball, soccer and swimming teams. He obtained his heating and air conditioning certification in 2002 and worked in his father's heating and air-conditioning business. He also assisted his mother at her store and worked at Force Protection. His hobbies including traveling. He was an active member of St. Peter's Church. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include two sisters, Sarah and Karina, and two brothers, Santiago Alfonso and Steven, all of Laytonsville; grandparents Justo and Catalina Funes, Hilda Cordova and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Wisniewski, 71, of Gaithersburg, died on Dec. 28, 2003, at Shady Grove Hospital, Rockville after a brief illness. Born Jan. 22, 1932 in Portage, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Agnes (Ease) Wisniewski. He was the husband of Jean (Smith) Wisniewski for 46 years. Mr. Wisniewski attended local schools in Portage and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1954 with a bachelor of science degree in mining engineering and was an AIME scholar in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1954-56. He retired in 1995 as vice president of engineering for the U.S. Export-Import Bank in Washington after 35 years of service in the U.S. Government in various capacities within the Internal Revenue Service and Export- Import Bank. He was listed in Who's Who in America several times during his distinguished career and was well respected by his staff and coworkers. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Gaithersburg. Survivors in addition to his wife include three children: John A. Wisniewski and his wife, Anne, of Wolfsville, Jean Toomey and her husband, John, of Germantown, Maria Wilson and her husband, Robert of Urbana; one sister, Mary Nesbella of Lilly, Pa.; one brother, Walter Wisniewski of San Antonio, Texas, and two grandchildren. Kenneth Poch Mr. Kenneth Poch, 62, of Gaithersburg died Dec. 27, 2003, from Lou Gehrig's disease. Born May 30, 1941, in New York, Mr. Poch was an audio visual expert. Mr. Poch worked for Newspaper Associates of America in Reston, Va., for 30 years. He was a Jewish historian at Arlington National Cemetery, an honorary member and honorary sergeant of the U.S. Army Old Guard and a photographer of exceptional merit with many awards. Survivors include two sons, Adam Poch and Seth Poch, both of New Jersey, and one sister, Sheila Targan of Montgomery Village. Loy, 69, of Gaithersburg, died on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at the Montgomery Hospice Casey House, Rockville. She was the wife for over 50 years of Silas Loy Sr. Born on June 26, 1934 in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late David and Mildred Nehouse Cole. Mrs. Loy was retired from Safeway after 25 years as a variety manager. She was a member of the Gaithersburg Church of the Nazarene. Farmer, who died Feb. 12, 1950. Born Nov. 5, 1911, in Comus, she was the daughter of the late David Rohrer and Leila Mumma Hershey. Mrs. Farmer was a member of Washington Grove United Methodist Church. She worked for a number of years at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, before transferring to the Atomic Energy Commission in Germantown, retiring in the late 1970s. Surviving are three children: Robert O. Farmer and wife Rebecca of Mount Airy, Susan F. Davis and husband Baxter of Alpharetta, Ga., and Thomas H. Mrs. Edwards worked as a delicatessen manager. He was the husband of Patricia Taylor for 41 years. Mr. Taylor served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked for United Parcel Service. He was a retired small business owner. Born Sept. 7, 1922, in Plains, Pa., she was the wife of James W. Hale. Survivors in addition to her husband include five children, Libby Elkaim and her husband, David, of Boyds, Cynthia Hale of Atlanta, Patricia Hale-Segura and her husband, Michael, of Centerville, Va., James Hale Jr. and his wife, Kirsten, of Pendleton, S.C., and Gloria Hale and her companion, Robert, of Poolesville; one sister, Eleonor Koval; one brother, Casimir Kasaba; and four grandchildren. Seng III, 44, a Fairfax County firefighter who retired in 2003 as shift captain after 28 years as a professional and volunteer, died of pancreatic cancer Dec. 26, 2003, at home in Damascus. Mr. Seng was born in Bethesda and lived in Maryland throughout his life. While the family lived in Rockville, he attended St. Jude Thaddeus School and graduated from Robert E. Peary High School in 1977. He earned an associate of arts degree in fire science from Montgomery College in 1980. He volunteered with the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years. He began his career as a firefighter with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department in 1980, after graduating first in his recruitment class. He completed his service at Station 30 in Merrifield, Va., in June 2003. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2068. Mr. Seng and his family moved to Damascus in 1995 and belong to St. John Neumann parish in Gaithersburg. Mr. Seng joined 12 fellow firefighters who traveled to Florida in 1992 to assist metropolitan Dade County firefighters in repairing damage caused to their homes by Hurricane Andrew. On Sept. 11, 2001, he led one of many rescue teams called to put out fires and aid in search and rescue following the terrorist attack on the Pentagon. Mr. Seng also worked part-time in exterior and interior home renovations, applying his skills as a carpenter, plumber and electrician. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed touring baseball parks throughout the country with family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Kathy Cunningham Seng and their two sons, Joseph and Thomas Seng, all of Damascus; his parents, Joseph and Joyce Seng of Mount Airy; brothers John Seng and wife Christine of Rockville, and Mike Seng of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and sisters Laura Knutsen and husband Kris of Lewes, Del., and Mary Seng of Beltsville. Born in Hanover, N.H., on Feb. 6, 1952, she was the daughter of the late Richard Blaine and Barbara Ann Bayse McCornack. Mrs. Beard attended American University. She taught at the Hilltop Preschool and at the Montgomery College preschool program in Germantown. Roush, 86, of Rockville died Jan. 5, 2004, in Westminster. Born Dec. 15, 1917, in Quincy, Ill., she was the daughter of the late John and Hazel Hall. She was the wife of the late Donald H. Roush, who died in 1972. Mrs. Roush was a 1936 graduate of Central High School in Washington, D.C., and attended George Washington University. She worked for the Election Board of Montgomery County and Richard Montgomery High School. Her hobbies included doll collecting, and she was an antiques dealer for the past 30 years. She was a member of the Free State Doll Study Club and the Rockville Chapter of the American Antique Arts Association. She was an active member of Rockville United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Survivors include two sons, David Roush and wife Dee of Westminster, and John Roush and wife Linda of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; one sister, Claire Smith of Bethesda; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen J. Roush, and two sisters, Susan Eeader and Mary Lou McCabe. Born Nov. 7, 1926, in Salem, Mass., he was the son of the late Morris Boyarsky and Bertha Miller. Mr. Boyarsky served in the U.S. Army for two years and was a grant coordinator for the Department of Environmental Services. Kellert Plumbing in Kensington, from which he retired as a plumbing superintendent in 1995. He was a charter member of Wheaton Moose Lodge 1775. He was a Methodist. He liked to boat and jet ski and was an avid motorcyclist. Mr. Nicholson enjoyed woodworking and football, and especially liked to go to sporting events and watch his grandchildren play sports. Deri Barringer Deri Barringer, 65, died from respiratory failure Dec. 24, 2003, in the Wayne Center in Wayne, Pa. A long-time resident of Rockville, she had attended Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and graduated from Boston University. In the early 1960s, she worked for Curtis Publishing, Philco and IBM as a computer specialist. Her work at IBM included writing parts of the operations manual for the 360 Mainframe. In the late 1960s, pursuing a life-long enthusiasm, she committed to a career as a freelance photographer. Photojournalism took her throughout the United States and through Africa, Europe, Iceland and the Galapagos Islands. She had assignments for The National Geographic and the Peace Corps. Her work linked her to the many families whose children she photographed from infancy into adulthood, her family said. He was a retired senior studio and staff photographer for the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. Mr. Oakes photographed United States presidents, Supreme Court justices and leaders from around the world, and was the official photographer of President Richard M. Nixon for his 1968 Inaugural Medal. Others he photographed included Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, Jacques Cousteau and Queen Sophia of Spain. He contributed photographs of the White House, U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court to various publications, and his work has also been featured in many National Geographic books and magazines. He and his wife, Patricia M. Oakes, also owned and operated an antiques and jewelry business for nearly 20 years that was based in the Washington, D.C., metro area. Mr. Oakes was born July 19, 1922, in Fort Collins, Colo. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II from 1942-1945. In addition to his wife, Mr. Oakes is survived by a son, Ronald Everest Baylis Jr. of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; daughters, Debra Baylis Kallmeyer of Castroville, Calif., and Christine Baylis Walden of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Walter Oakes Jr. of McLean, Va., and Harold Oakes of Denver; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Gartner Mr. Robert E. Gartner Sr., 85, of Gaithersburg, died Jan. 22, 2004. Born Dec. 17, 1918, he was the son of the late Millard J. Gartner and Helen Gartner Funkhouser. He was the husband of Harriett Perry Gartner. Mr. Gartner owned and operated Gartner's Machine Shop in Gaithersburg for more than 45 years. He was a life member of Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Fire Department. He received the governor's citation in 1990 from Gov. William Donald Schaefer for more than 50 years of dedicated service to the fire department. He was born Feb. 12, 1949, in Pulaski, Va., the son of Glenn Thomas Pennington Sr. of Dublin, Va., and the late Grace Virginia Cox Pennington. He was a truck driver for J.M. Dorsey. He was a bus driver for 15 years for Montgomery County Public Schools. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
