Bradley Jr. Capt. Richard Rumel Bradley Jr., USN (ret.), 90, of Potomac died of pneumonia on Feb. 2, 2004, at Mariner Health Care of Bethesda. Born Oct. 16, 1913, in Atlanta, Ga., he was the son of the late Richard R. Bradley Sr. and Ermina Wellhouse Bradley. He was the husband of Priscilla Eldredge Bradley for 60 years. Capt. Bradley graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1936 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from the Navy after 28 years of service. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Robin Subelsky and her husband Barry of Hedgesville, W.Va., Sharon Bradley of Kensington, Claire Ingley and her husband Jerry of Gaithersburg; one son, Richard R. Bradley III and his wife Judy of Rockville; and three grandchildren. Friends will be received from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 West Montgomery Ave., Rockville. Fraley, 95, of Redland died Jan. 26, 2004, at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Nursing Home in Boonsboro. Born Sept. 10, 1908, in Bergton, Va., she was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Angeline Victoria Snyder Cullers. She was the wife of the late Brake R. Fraley. She moved to Baltimore in 1925 to take a job as a housekeeper and eventually became the cook for the mayor of Baltimore. After marriage, she worked along with her husband in their trucking business and was a landlord for many years. Mrs. Fraley joined the Flower Hill Church of the Brethren in Gaithersburg in 1934. She and her husband were founding members of the Montgomery County Agricultural Society. She also was a member of AARP. Mrs. Fraley is survived by three children, Alice Fraley Gregg of Woodstock, Va., Clara Belle Nelson of Needmore, Pa., and Ellwood Brake Fraley and his wife Nikora of Kensington; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grand children; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons-in law, Stanley W. Gregg and John T. Nelson; two sisters, Margie Biddison and Nellie Fitzwater; and three brothers, Jess Cullers, Webb Cullers and Lory Cullers. She came to the Washington Metro Area in the 1950s, where she started working and raising a family. Heidi, which is how her friends knew her, retired after an 18-year career with Life Technologies Inc./Invitrogen. Her enjoyments in life were her family, friends and the beach. She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Beswick. Danner Lee Norton Danner, 73, of Clover Lick, W.Va., formerly of Rockville, died of complications from influenza on Jan. 10, 2004, in Low Moor, Va. Born Feb. 17, 1930, in California, he was the son of the late Phillip and Vernita Gordy Danner. Mr. Danner served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California, Berkley, and earned a master's degree from the University of Maryland. He retired from IBM after 25 years and was a professor of computer science at ETSU, The College of West Virginia and Bluefield State College. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Weston-Dawkes and husband Jon of Ellicott City, and Sarah Evans and husband Peter of Tucson, Ariz.; one son, Philip Danner and wife Deedra of Germantown; and five grandchildren. Born Nov. 21, 1961, in Washington D.C., she was the daughter of Carl Zovko of Silver Spring and the late Carol Hauff Zovko. She was the daughter-in-law of Charles and Peggy Corsillo of Leisure World. She was a registered nurse, working the past several years at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. She was very dedicated to her children and the Olney community; her volunteer activities included working in the classroom and the school health room, coaching soccer and serving as a Cub Scout den leader. Fearon Janette Marie Fearon, 40, of Gaithersburg died of cancer Feb. 2, 2004, at her home. Born Nov. 5, 1963, in Phoenixville, Pa., she was the daughter of Joseph and Dorothy Kane. She was the wife of Kenneth B. Fearon for 17 years. Mrs. Fearon was a graduate of St. Mary's Parochial School in Rockville, and the Academy of The Holy Child in Kensington. She earned a bachelor of civil engineering degree from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and worked as a civil engineer in the Department of Public Works for the City of Rockville and the City of Gaithersburg. She was a member of Tau Beth Phi and the Civil Engineering Society and was the 2003 Alumna of the Year for St. Mary's School. In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by two children, Kelly Fearon and Megan Fearon of Gaithersburg; one sister, Darlene Kane of Germantown; and two brothers, Joseph Kane and wife Lisa of Frederick and Daniel Kane and wife Kim of Columbia. Molesworth Funeral Home in Damascus. Thomas A. Ladson Thomas Alvin Ladson, 86, formerly of Olney, died peacefully at his home in Florida on Jan. 23, 2004. Born Sept. 29, 1917, in Hyattsville, he was the son of Thomas Arthur and Jessie Davis Ladson. Dr. Ladson grew up in Olney and graduated from Sherwood High School. He earned a degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Pennsylvania, and was in private practice with his father and brother when he became affiliated with the Maryland veterinary program. He was the head of the Animal Health Laboratories, the undergraduate school and the veterinary science department. He retired in 1978 as state veterinarian. His love of automobiles was a lifetime hobby. He restored several, winning national awards with his 1912 Model T and 1922 Rolls Royce. Dr. Ladson was one of the first presidents of the Olney Lion's Club, an original member of the Olney Civic Association and a member of the board of directors of Sandy Spring Bank from 1952 to 1987. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Jean Thomas; one son, Thomas Alban Ladson; one daughter, Judith Ladson Disharoon; and three grandchildren, Adam Thomas, Branden Franklin and Caitlin Bentley Rush. Schroebel Wilmer Willis Schroebel, 85, of Montgomery Village died of acute leukemia Feb. 1, 2004, at Casey House Hospice in Derwood. Born March 18, 1918, in Stockton, Calif., he was the son of the late Richard and Hazel (Willis) Schroebel. He was the husband of the late Adele Schroebel. Mr. Schroebel enlisted in the Selective Service in 1940, joined the U.S. Army in 1941 and attended Officer Candidate School. He graduated on Dec. 8, 1941, and was assigned to the 36th Texas National Guard Division and served as an infantry officer, company commander, battalion and regimental staff officer in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He participated in the invasion of Italy, the Casino battles, the invasion of Southern France, the Vosge and Black Forest, and later was a staff officer at 12th Army, Wiesbaden, Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star and was selected to accompany Gen. Omar Bradley to Washington, D.C., to help establish the Veterans Administration, where he converted to civil service. He joined the U.S. Army Reserve as a major and later was promoted to lieutenant colonel before retirement in the late 1960s. He became manager of the Veterans Administration branch in San Francisco. He later worked in the Office of Civil Defense, and transferred to the Atomic Energy Commission's Division of Biology and Medicine, Civil Effects Branch. He retired from the Department of Energy Office of Analysis and Evaluation in 1976. Mr. Schroebel attended the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., receiving an associate's degree in the late 1930s. He attended George Washington University, majoring in physics in the 1950s and early 1960s. He attended Montgomery College from the 1970s until shortly before his death. He was a member of the 36th Division T-Patchers and the 141st Infantry Regiment Association. Survivors include three children, Charles B. Schroebel of Memphis, Tenn., Peter A. Schroebel of Rockville and Matthew R. Schroebel of Keedysville; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and his companion, Julia F. Muse. Mr. Kemp was a bus driver for Montgomery County schools for 25 years. He was a former member of Hyattstown Volunteer Fire Department. Born Jan. 24, 1920 in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late James Vincent and Minnie Scheuch Ax. She was the wife of the late Frank W. Longbon. She is survived by two daughters, Diane C. Davis of Laurel and Jeanne M. Beddick of Laytonsville; three grandchildren, Stacy, Jennifer and Frank; four great-grandchildren, Caitlin, James, Andrew and Bryce; and five nieces. Jiann-Ping Hsu Dr. Jiann-Ping Hsu, 56, a nationally known scholar and scientist in biostatistics, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. The Jiann-Ping Hsu School of Public Health at Georgia Southern University was established and endowed in her name in January 2004, as the first such school in the University System of Georgia. Dr. Hsu is survived by her husband, Dr. Karl Peace, who endowed the Jiann-Ping Hsu School of Public Health to commemorate his wife's "zeal for excellence, consideration of others, intelligence and scholarship, honesty and kindness." Born in mainland China in 1947 and educated in Taiwan, Dr. Hsu became a scholar of mathematical sciences, earning a bachelor of science degree in mathematics at the National Taiwan University, a master of arts degree in mathematical statistics at Columbia, and a doctorate in biostatistics from the University of California at Berkeley, the top graduate in her class. The eldest of five daughters, she worked to bring her family to the United States, providing for their care and a college education for her sisters. Dr. Hsu served with the Food and Drug Administration, reviewing new drug applications, conducting research in surveillance of the post-marketing use of drugs, and drafting guidelines for clinical research in drugs for treatment of inflammatory diseases. She also sat on review panels for the clinical trial grant applications for the National Institute on Drug Abuse. During her career, Dr. Hsu held key research positions in the world's leading pharmaceutical firms and became president of the Michigan-based Biopharmaceutical Research Consultants Inc. founded by Peace. Dr. Hsu was a member of the Committee of Women in Statistics in the American Statistical Association and has served other professional organizations, including the International Chinese Statistical Association, and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturer's Association. In 1999 and 2003, she was honored with the Meritorious Service Award of the Biopharmaceutical Applied Statistics Symposium for distinguished service and outstanding contributions. She has also mentored and trained more than 60 biostatisticians employed in the pharmaceutical industry, government or academia. The inscription on the plaque dedicating the Jiann-Ping School of Public Health commemorates Dr. Hsu's "distinguished service in her life's work and devotion to quality and caring in all her endeavors which personify the touchstones of learning and leadership in the health professions." She is also survived by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Chung Hsu, and four sisters: Dai-Ping Wei, Shu-Ping Wu, and Jih-Ping Small, all of Gaithersburg, and Ru-Hong Terajawiscz of Concord, Mass., and several nieces and nephews. Evelyn L. Arnold Evelyn L. Arnold, 76, died Feb. 9, 2004, at her home in Damascus following a long battle with cancer. She also had Parkinson's disease. Born Dec. 6, 1927, in Germantown, she was a daughter of the late Leroy A. and F. Irene Sibley Arnold. Miss Arnold graduated from Damascus High School and attended Columbus University in Washington, D.C., where she received a degree in economics. For many years, she was involved with 4-H Club work and she was a life member of the Montgomery County Agriculture Society and Fair. She worked as an accountant at the Department of Energy and upon retirement worked as a teller at the Farmers & Mechanics National Bank in Damascus. She enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Damascus Travel Club. She served as a tour leader and as the first treasurer of the club, a position she held for 31 years. She enjoyed needlework, ceramics and reading. Miss Arnold was a member of Saint Paul's Catholic Church in Damascus. Survivors include a brother, James B. Arnold of LaPlata; and two sisters, Lillian A. Murphy and her husband Rockne of Ijamsville, and Mary Jane Arnold of Damascus. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy A. She earned a bachelor of civil engineering degree from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and worked as a civil engineer in the Department of Public Works for the City of Rockville and the City of Gaithersburg. Aldous Gene Stevens Aldous, 70, of Damascus died after a brief illness Feb. 13, 2004, at Casey House in Rockville. Born in Denver, he was the son of Shaler E. Aldous, Iris S. Aldous and Isabel D. Aldous. He moved to Montgomery County in 1948, where he graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1951. He was active in the D.C. Dragons Hot Rod Club. He went to technical school in Nashville, Tenn., learned his trade and then worked in the field for 10 years before attending Montgomery College at the Takoma Park campus. He then received a degree from American University in political science. In 1966 he was hired to create a vocational auto body and automotive painting program for Montgomery County Public Schools at Gaithersburg High School, where he taught for 28 years, retiring in 1994. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Nancy Haines Aldous; two sons, Travis Haines Aldous of Gaithersburg and Bradley Tucker Aldous of New York City; one grandson; and a sister, Marcella A. Burroughs. He was preceded in death by two siblings, Elaine MacKenzie and Kenneth Aldous. "Mickey" Harris Jr., 79, of Bethesda died Feb. 12, 2004, at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He was Deputy Fire Chief (retired) of the Glen Echo Volunteer Fire Department and Honorary Fire Chief of the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department. Born July 4, 1924, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Albert D. Harris Sr. and Mary Moody. He was the husband of the late Jane Llewellyn Love Harris for 51 years. Mr. Harris served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was appointed to the Montgomery County Department of Police. He retired from his post as captain of the Detective Bureau in 1975 and accepted a position with Maryland Fire Equipment Corporation in Rockville until his retirement in 1989. He joined the Glen Echo Volunteer Fire Department Dec. 7, 1941, rising through the ranks to Deputy Fire Chief. He served as treasurer of the department for more than 32 years. He was also an Honorary Chief and Master of Ceremonies Emeritus of the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a senior advisor for the past 12 years. He was also an honorary member of the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department and the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad. Mr. Harris served as a delegate to the Montgomery County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association for more than 30 years and as president from 1975-76. He also served as chairman in 1985 for the annual convention. His service to the Maryland State Firemen's Association (MSFA) spanned 45 years and a delegate to the annual convention from 1955-98. He served as chairman of the Firefighter of the Year Committee and was named Chairman Emeritus in February 2003. He served on the MSFA Scholarship Committee, Hall of Fame Selection Committee and Emergency Assistance Trust Board of Review. Mr. Harris was awarded the Outstanding Lifetime Community Service Award in 2001 by the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce for 60 years of service. He received the Chief Les Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association and was a recent recipient of the Marbury Gates Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award from the MSFA. Mr. Harris was inducted into the MSFA Hall of Fame and the Montgomery County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association's Hall of Fame. Mr. Harris is survived by a son, Matthew Harris and his wife Susan of Chadds Ford, Pa.; a daughter, Mary Daley and her husband Robert of Potomac; one brother, John Harris; and five grandchildren. Robert Lee Hafer III Robert Lee Hafer III, 52, of Derwood, died on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at his home. Born July 13, 1951, in Battle Creek, Mich., he was the son of Nancy S. Stephenson Hafer of Derwood and the late Robert L. Hafer Jr. Mr. Hafer worked for 16 years as a special agent for the Department of State in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security. He spent six years as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps after getting his master's degree from the University of Maryland. He also worked for two years as a substitute teacher with Frederick County Public Schools. Survivors in addition to his mother include: three children, Robert Edward L. Kemp, 59, of Upper Marlboro and formerly of Gaithersburg, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. Born June 30, 1944, in Gaithersburg, he was a son of the late Samuel L. and Rosie May Ennis Kemp. He was the husband of V. Ruth Raynor Kemp. Mr. Kemp was a bus driver for Montgomery County schools for 25 years. He was a former member of the Hyattstown Volunteer Fire Department. Fairbanks, 72, of Rockville died Feb. 1, 2004, at the National Lutheran Nursing Home after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born April 10, 1931, in St. Paul, Minn., she was the daughter of the late Carl and Minnie Bornhausen. She was the wife of John W. Fairbanks for 47 years. Mrs. Fairbanks received her bachelor's degree with honors from the University of Minnesota in elementary education and began her teaching career with the California Public School System, teaching at schools in La Jolla and Palo Alto. Later she continued teaching with Montgomery County Public Schools. She was dedicated to the arts and literature and was an accomplished pianist and ice skater. She also was a Camp Fire Girls troop leader. Survivors in addition to her husband include four children, Carolyn Stokes of Olney, Jack Fairbanks and David Fairbanks, both of Germantown, and Steve Fairbanks of Potomac; two sisters, Shirley Beery of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Carol Bornhausen of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Carl Parker Carl Weston Parker, 84, of Frederick, formerly of Rockville, died Feb. 14, 2004, at Citizens Nursing Home in Frederick. He was the husband of the late Eva Wohlforth Parker. He was born Oct. 26, 1919, in Morganton, N.C., the son of the late Duncan Shaw Parker and Marie Davis Parker Mr. Parker was a retired auto glass mechanic who had worked for Enterprise Auto Glass. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He grew up in Washington, D.C., and raised his children in Rockville. Mr. Parker was a resident of the Odd Fellows Home in Frederick until its recent closing. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Maura Parker of Mount Airy; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Anne Parker of Bridgewater, Vt.; and six grandchildren. Margaret Burke Johnston Margaret Burke Johnston, 84, of the Edenton retirement community in Frederick, died Feb. 4, 2004, at the home of her daughter in Damascus. She married her husband James Stanley Johnston Aug. 27, 1938. Mr. Johnston died in 1996. Born Jan. 15, 1920, in North Warren, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Thomas James and Britannia Jane Strickland Burke. Mrs. Johnston graduated from Warren High School in Warren, Pa., in 1938. She lived in Silver Spring for many years, and had been employed as personnel director at the Hecht Company. She was also a member of the Frederick Seventh Day Adventist Church. Surviving her are two daughters: Janis Hockenberry Peterson of Damascus and Judith Rae Sterns of San Jose, Calif.; six grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren.
