Stolz Sr. Mr. Joseph Edward Stolz Sr., 79, of Washington Grove, died of pneumonia on Feb. 19, 2004, at Shady Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born Oct. 20, 1924 in Brunswick, he was a son of the late Joseph and Sarah K. Stolz. He was the husband of Virginia E. Stolz for 56 years. Mr. Stolz graduated from St. Martin's School in 1939 and was a 1943 graduate of Gaithersburg High School. He attended Northwestern University and the University of Maryland. Mr. Stolz served in the U.S. Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army Transport Service during World War II. He was a purser aboard the hospital ships Thistle, George Washington Carver and Marigold. In 1948, Mr. Stolz become a Montgomery County Police officer and retired as a captain in 1978. Survivors include four children, Joseph E. Stolz Jr. of Washington Grove, Barbara A. Engle of Rockville, Stephen A. Stolz of Walkersville and Paul M. Stolz; a brother, John Stolz of Florida; six grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, John M. and David C. Stolz, two sisters, Mary Sullivan and Frances Corbin, and three brothers, Frederick, Bernard and Benjamin Stolz. A mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday at St. Martin's Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Arrangements were made by DeVol Funeral Home in Gaithersburg. Samuel L. Smith Samuel L. Smith, 78, of Gaithersburg, died on Feb. 19, 2004, at his residence. Born Oct. 3, 1926, in Hill City, Kan., he was the son of the late Oliver and Jessie Hanson Smith. He was the husband of Violet C. Smith. He was a graduate of Hill City High School, Hill City, Kan., and had attended George Washington University. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He was an electronics technician for the Naval Research Lab, retiring in 1982. Mr. Smith enjoyed gardening and reading. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Damascus. In addition to his wife he is survived by: a son, John Walter Smith of Manassas, Va.; a daughter, Carol A. Brunetto of Derwood; two grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Bonneau of Des Moines, Iowa. Rowles, 83, of Gaithersburg died Feb. 22, 2004, at the Montgomery Village Health Care Center. Born Nov. 14, 1920, in Washington, D.C., he was the husband of the late Carolyn M. Rowles. Mr. Rowles worked for Johns Hopkins University APL in Howard County for 30 years before retiring to Venice, Fla. Survivors include three children, Robert of Rockville, Brenda of Montgomery Village and Ronald of Charles Town, W. Va.; one brother; four sisters; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A viewing will be held at the Fleck Funeral Home, 7601 Sandy Spring Road in Laurel from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Young Sr. James Andrew Young Sr., 79, of Damascus, a retired Montgomery County sheriff, died Feb. 22, 2004, at home. Born Aug. 4, 1924, in Ohio, he was the son of the late William and Pearl Phillips Young. He was the husband of Anne M. Young for 58 years. Mr. Young served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received law enforcement training at the University of Southern California. He worked as a deputy sheriff in the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office for 14 years and later served as chief deputy sheriff. In 1976, he was elected sheriff of Montgomery County, where he served for eight years. Mr. Young was a member of the National Sheriffs' Association and a past president of the Maryland Sheriffs' Association. He was instrumental in the development of the Maryland Sheriffs' Youth Ranch. He was a member of the Damascus American Legion and a volunteer for Cub Scout Pack 1084 of Damascus, where he served as treasurer for 12 years. He was a member of Damascus United Methodist Church. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and performing volunteer work. Survivors in addition to his wife include three children, James A. Young Jr. and his wife, Janet, of Eldersburg, William A. Young and his wife, Claudia, of Damascus, and Patricia A. Walker and her husband, Darryl, of Damascus; one brother, Richard Young of Pennsylvania; one sister, Helen Walker of California; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Anderson, 75, of Gaithersburg died Feb. 18, 2004, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born in Hamilton, Ohio, he was the husband of Eve Anderson. Survivors in addition to his wife include three children, Robert Gredone, Sheri Anderson and Dana Clayton; one brother, Don Anderson of Ohio; and one sister, Mary Williams and husband Lat of North Carolina. A memorial service was held Monday at Barber Funeral Home in Laytonsville. Robert Mangum Robert Mangum, 71, of Burtonsville died Feb. 23, 2004. He was an area florist, nurseryman and agricultural leader who owned several businesses, including Bell Flowers in Silver Spring and Bell Nursery in Burtonsville that are now operated by his children. He was born April 10, 1932, in Silver Spring and lived in Burtonsville for the past 25 years. Mr. Mangum grew up in Montgomery County and began his career by purchasing his family's business, Bell Flowers, in 1957. In 1969, he created a professional interior landscape services business, Creative Plantings Inc. in Rockville, which served area hotels, shopping malls and office clients. In 1980, Mangum opened Bell Nursery to grow flowering plants for the retail floral business as well as the interior landscape business. The nursery supplies plants to area Home Depot and Costco locations. Mr. Mangum graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1951. He studied business administration at the University of Maryland and served in the Marine Corps from 1953-1955. He was a member of Silver Spring Jaycees, Rotary and the Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce. He was a past president of the Izaak Walton League of America and worked with several county agricultural organizations, including the county fair and 4-H. Mr. Mangum is survived by his wife, Louise Chappell Mangum; children, Gary Mangum, Lori Connor, Dale Mangum and Lisa McCarthy, their spouses and 14 grandchildren; four stepchildren, Lynne Willson, Cynthia Moyer, Rick Chappell and Craig Chappell, their spouses and eight grandchildren. Mr. Mangum also is survived by a brother, George Mangum, and a sister, Elizabeth Kushmeider. Mr. Mangum was preceded in death by his wife of more than 40 years, Shirley Benner Mangum, who died in 1995. Ian Gaston Baube Ian Gaston Baube, 68, of Edenton, N.C., formerly of Silver Spring, died Feb. 16, 2004, at his home after a six-month battle with cancer. He was born July 24, 1935, in London to the late Jean Camille Baube and Lillian Whaley. He moved to the United States in 1939 and spent most of his life in the Washington, D.C., area. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in the District and attended the University of Maryland in College Park. His career involved years of real estate sales, including his own company, Old Line Properties. He retired in 1998 as a homebuilder and real estate agent from CI Mitchell and Best Company. He loved golfing, fishing, hunting and flying his Cessna Cardinal. In 1998 he married Marcia Gonzalez and they moved from Silver Spring to Edenton. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jannine Elizabeth and husband Timothy Holden of Damascus, Jacqueline Francoise and husband Douglas Kretzer of Edenton, and daughter Michelle Camille and husband Michael Jones of Conway, N.C.; two sons, William Stuart Baube of Lawrenceville, Va., and Jean Barrett Baube and wife Cynthia Sunier of Damascus; a step-daughter, Michelle Gonzalez of Silver Spring; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Anne Burdick of Olney. He was predeceased by his former wife, Laura Outland Baube. A memorial service was held at the Albemarle Baptist Church in Edenton on Friday. Mills, 65, of Rockville died Feb. 18, 2004, at her home. Born May 25, 1938, in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late George Skinner and Mary King Skinner Winter. She was the wife of George Lee Mills. Mrs. Mills was a retired bus driver for Montgomery County Public Schools. Survivors in addition to her husband include a daughter, Katherine Whitt of Gaithersburg; and two grandchildren. Services and burial will be private. Viqueira Joseph Manuel Viqueira, 73, formerly of Bethesda, died of pneumonia Feb. 16, 2004, in Memphis, Tenn. He had Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Viqueira was a retired elementary principal with Montgomery County Public Schools. Born Aug. 19, 1930, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Jose and Lenora Viqueira. He was the husband of Linda Nathan Viqueira. Mr. Viqueira served in the United States Marine Corps and was wounded in combat in Korea. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He graduated in 1956 from Wilson Teacher's College in Northwest, Washington, D.C., and earned a master's degree in elementary administration at George Washington University. Mr. Viqueira began his teaching career at Wheatley Elementary School in the District, then moved to Montgomery County Public Schools, where he taught at Harmony Hills Elementary School in Aspen Hill, then at Julius West Junior High School in Rockville. He then became an administrator, first as assistant principal at Harmony Hills, then as principal at the old West Rockville (now Beall) Elementary School in the early to mid-1960s. In 1969 he opened Cashell Elementary School in Olney, where he remained as principal through the 1970s and into the early 1980s. Under his stewardship, Cashell became noted for academic achievements and test scores, to the extent that Mr. Viqueira and the school were profiled in the Washington Star-News in January 1975. After leaving Cashell he became principal of Somerset Elementary School in Chevy Chase. He retired from the school system while at Somerset, but was asked to serve as principal at Glenallen Elementary School in Silver Spring for a short time following retirement. Mr. Viqueira was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Besides his wife, Mr. Viqueira is also survived by two sons, Mark Joseph Viqueira and wife Mona of Haleiwa, Hawaii, and Michael Joseph Viqueira and wife Kim of Bethesda ; two grandchildren; one sister, Grace Nelson of Short Hills, N.J.; and a brother, Julius Viqueira of Broad Run, Va. Charles G. Cooley Charles Garrett Cooley, 70, of Clarksburg died February 20, 2004, at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick after a brief illness. Born July 31, 1933, in Barnesville, he was the son of the late Garrett and Nellie Cooley. He was the husband of Elva Raye Cooley for 53 years. Mr. Cooley owned and operated his own business, Cooley Construction Inc., and built numerous homes in Montgomery and Frederick counties for 50 years. Mr. Cooley was a member of the Farmers Cooperative of Frederick, Montgomery County Farm Bureau, Upper Montgomery County Fire Department, past member of the Carroll Manor Lions Club and a registered building representative for North American Homes. Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Diane Beall and her husband, Clark, of Clarksburg, and one granddaughter, Vicki Stokes and her husband, Michael, of Poolesville. Barr, M.D., 59, of Bethesda, died of cancer on Feb. 17, 2004, at his home in Bethesda. Born Aug. 25, 1944, in Portland, Maine, he was the son of Isabelle Ogilby Barr of Chevy Chase and the late John L. Barr Jr. He was the husband of Jill H. Barr. Dr. Barr was a graduate of the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., Harvard College and Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He was co- author of "Your Child Is Smarter Than You Think" (Morrow, 1985), a book on how young children learn, written with his sister, journalist and author, Peggy Eastman. He was an internist for 25 years with Kaiser Permanente. He was a member of the Harvard Club of Washington and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Besides his wife, Dr. Barr is survived by two children, Christopher J. Barr and Alice E. Barr of Bethesda; and a sister, Peggy Barr Eastman of Chevy Chase. Haigh John A. Haigh, 81, died of a heart attack Feb. 14, 2004, at his home in Silver Spring. He was a patent architect for attorneys O'Brian and Jacobs in Washington for 35 years. Mr. Haigh was a 1941 graduate of Eastern High School. Following high school, he worked in Washington, D.C., for five years for the British Air Commission, a wartime agency of the British government. Mr. Haigh was a member of Christ Congregational United Church of Christ in Silver Spring where he was a deacon, sang in the choir and served on the sanctuary committee. In 1943, he married Ruth P. Zimmerman. In addition to his wife, other survivors include two sons, John A. Haigh Jr. of Burtonsville, and Steven M. Haigh of Hagerstown; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Haigh Peterson and Benjamin Haigh of Santa Barbara, Calif., and John A.Haigh III of Burtonsville. Born Oct. 8, 1908, in Fairbury, Ill., she was the daughter of the late John J. Gould and Ida Belle Green Gould. She was the wife of Herbert W. Mumford Jr. for 72 years. Mrs. Mumford attended a one-room elementary school, a city high school and graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor of science degree in 1931. She was treasurer for the British-American Woman's Club while stationed with her husband in Quito, Ecuador. When they returned to the United States, she was an active 4-H Club leader and received the Silver Clover in recognition of five years of leadership. She also received Montgomery County honors in the National 4-H Alumni Recognition Program. She was a Camp Fire Girl and Cub Scout Leader, an officer of the PTA, and a member of other organizations. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Genevieve E. Griffith of Rockville, Marilyn M. Bourdeaux of Gaithersburg, Jeannette Straub of Little Rock, Ark., and Herbert W. Burial was in Norbeck Memorial Park Cemetery in Olney. Kathryn L. Orbin Kathryn Lee Orbin, 63, of Cedar Grove, died Feb. 28, 2004, at her home. Born Feb. 29, 1940, in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Charles L. and Mary Jane Smith Hartman. Ms. Orbin was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, John M. Carter Post 9862 VFW in Gaithersburg and the Golden Grannys Dance Troupe in Damascus. She Attended the Mount Airy Bible Church. Survivors include her partner of 22 years, James Cook of Cedar Grove; a son, Charles M. Orbin and his wife, Patricia of Mount Airy; a daughter, Rebecca Hoyle and her husband, Steven, of Woodbine; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday. The Rev. Born Oct. 17, 1957, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Vicky McLane and the late John E. Fonda Sr., of Benbrook, Texas. He was the husband of Karen Kephart Fonda Mr. Fonda was a 1976 graduate of Cherokee County High School in Georgia. Following his graduation he served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Fonda worked as comptroller for WFT Engineering in Rockville. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and the Duke Blue Devils. Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, include one son, John E. Fonda III; one sister, Suzanne Poole and her husband, Bart, of Germantown; one brother, Michael Fonda of Wylie, Texas; one niece; and his in-laws, Margaret Ann and Reggie Kephart of Frederick. Laura Schmidt Pizzarello Laura Schmidt Pizzarello, 51, a freelance medical writer in the end-of-life field, died Feb. 25, 2004, at her home in Germantown of pancreatic cancer. Ms. Pizzarello, the daughter of the late Alexander Schmidt and Francesca Rospigliosi, was born in New York City on July 7, 1952. She moved to the Washington, D.C., area 30 years ago and had lived in Germantown since 2000. She received a bachelor's degree from Marymount College in New York and a master's degree in thanatology from Hood College in Frederick. Since 1991, she had been actively involved as a medical writer in the end-of- life field. She advocated for patients' rights and improvements in the quality of end-of-life care. Her clients included the AARP, Americans for Better Care of the Dying, Last Acts and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Ms. Pizzarello was featured in a story in The Gazette last month. She was also profiled on ABC's "Nightline" program, "A Good Death," in December. "Nightline" will air a follow-up program this week. In addition to her husband of 15 years, she is survived by two brothers, William Schmidt of Washington, D.C., and Camillo Schmidt of Bethesda. Sluger Ronald Joseph Sluger, 41, of Germantown, died Feb. 27, 2004, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Dec. 25, 2003. Born Sept. 21, 1962, in Brownsville, Pa., he was a son of James A. Sluger Sr. and Beverly A. Sluger. Originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Gowling attended Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H., and The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. before graduating from Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. She earned a master's degree in 1934 from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisc., and later earned degrees from Katharine Gibbs School, now Gibbs New York, in New York City and Columbia Teachers College, also in New York City. She married Thomas Gowling Jr. on Dec. 29, 1939, and worked as a personal secretary to a General Motors vice president in New York City. Mrs. Gowling later moved to California while her husband served in the Navy during World War II. Following the war, the Gowlings returned to New York, then later moved to Washington, D.C., in 1955, and Potomac in 1967. Mrs. Gowling is survived by her son, Thomas A. Maxson, 87, of Bethesda, died of cancer on March 10, 2004, at his home. Born Sept. 24, 1916, in Rockford, Ill., he was the husband of Mary Louise Fox Maxson. Mr. Maxson retired in 1975 as executive director of the Federal Power Commission following a celebrated career with the United States government that spanned three decades. He was a trumpet player and bandleader. By 1935, Web Maxson and his Orchestra became a familiar attraction at resorts throughout New England and in New York. Web Maxson and his Orchestra was also featured on cruise ships making trips to Europe, the Caribbean and South America. Following his graduation from Amherst College in 1939, he continued with the orchestra for one year. He joined the Army Air Corps in March 1941. He served for five years in a variety of positions until his discharge in February 1946, with the rank of Major. In 1947 he enrolled at the University of Cincinnati Law School and received his L.L.B. two years later. Following graduation from law school, he accepted a position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., and shortly thereafter moved to Bethesda. After five years with the department as a hearing examiner, he joined the Broadcast Bureau of the Federal Communications Commission. He moved on to the Department of Justice in 1957 to serve as an attorney in the Office of Legal Council. He was appointed director of the Office of Administrative Procedure in 1959 and in 1961 Attorney General Robert Kennedy appointed him to serve as staff director for the President's Panel on Ethics in Government President John Kennedy appointed him to the post of executive director of the Administrative Conference for 1961-62, after which he returned to the Department of Justice to re-establish the Office of Administrative Procedure. In 1965, Mr. Maxson received the Justice Department's Meritorious Service Award for his work as director of the Office of Administrative Procedure. Mr. Maxson was an original member of Lakewood Country Club in Rockville. Johnson Alla Louise Carnduff Johnson, 86, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Bethesda, died of Alzheimer's disease on March 19, 2004, at Victoria Home in Gaithersburg. Born Dec. 1, 1917, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Arthur Willard Carnduff and Alla Mary Rhodes. Her marriage to the late Alan Martin Johnson Jr. ended in divorce. Mrs. Johnson was a Bishop's Scholar at the National Cathedral School and graduated in 1935. She attended Wellesley College and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1939 after earning a bachelor of arts degree in political science. She worked as an assistant to Washington, D.C., stockbroker Henry Barnard and was an analyst for the Office of Facts and Figures (precursor to the CIA) under Archibald MacLeish. Mrs. Johnson founded the nursery school at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church in 1957 and was a member of that church for 50 years. She was also a member of the Richard Arnold chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a docent at the DAR museum for 30 years. She was a member of the Woman's Club of Chevy Chase and the American Association of University Women. Mrs. Johnson is survived by two children, Alan M. Johnson III of Potomac and Margaret Orrick of Bethesda; and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur W. Carnduff. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, 6601 Bradley Blvd., Bethesda. Burial will follow in the church's Columbarium. Sherfy Wanda C. Sherfy, 76, of Silver Spring, formerly of Potomac, died of a stroke on March 15, 2004, at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park. Born Nov. 28, 1927, in Tichnor, Ark., she was a daughter of the late Crafton L. and Erha K. Connor. She was the wife of the late Raphael Sherfy Jr. for 40 years. Mrs. Sherfy taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in Tichnor, Ark., following her graduation from high school at the age of 16. In 1944, she joined two sisters in Washington, D.C., who came to work on the World War II effort. She worked in the Veterans Administration and on the House of Representatives' staff of an Arkansas congressman and attended college classes in the evening. Mrs. Sherfy moved to Potomac with her family in 1962 and retired to Sherwood Forest in Silver Spring in 2000. She was a member of the Congressional Country Club, The Women's National Democratic Club and Potomac Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Sherfy is survived by a son, Raphael Sherfy III of Tucson, Ariz.; three daughters, Grace J. Straszheim and her husband Mahlon of Potomac, Sally K. Rogers and her husband John of Silver Spring and Elizabeth Sherfy of Chevy Chase; a sister-in-law, Josephine C. Sherfy; seven grandchildren; and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. March 27 at the Potomac Presbyterian Church, 10301 River Road, Potomac. Burial will be private. Born Dec. 9, 1943, in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late Elizabeth and Louis Royston Bonbrest. He was the husband of Vicky Lynn Whipp Bonbrest. Survivors in addition to his wife include three children, Louis Bonbrest and wife Nancy, Charles (Pete) Bonbrest, and Anna Kitterman and husband Rick; and three grandchildren. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick. Theodore P. Moore Theodore Page Moore, 70, of Ocean Pines, Md., and formerly of Damascus, died March 21, 2004, at his home. Born April 13, 1933 in Clarksburg, W.Va., he was a son of the late Edward Moore and Madge Roberts Moore. He was the husband of Peggy Moore. Mr. Moore was an electrical engineer with the U. S. Government and retired in December 1999. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, a VFW Life Member of Post 10076 in Mount Airy, a life member of American Legion Post 191 in Mount Airy, AMVETS Post 0002 in Frederick, Knights of Pythias, Lodge 123 in Gaithersburg, Loyal Order of Moose, Berlin, Md., and Elks Lodge 2645, Ocean City. Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Stephanie A. Sult of Chesterfield, Va., and Stacy L. Anderson and her husband, Joseph W. Jr. of Midlothian, Va.; one brother, James Moore of Missoula, Mont.; four sisters, Christine Erwin of Ridgeland, S.C., Margaret Mehl of Sneads Ferry, N.C., Judy Flaville of Havelock, N.C., and Susan Herrick of Edmond, Okla.; four grandchildren; and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Moore. Services and interment will be private. Born Nov. 19, 1927, in Washington, D.C., he was the husband of the late Lois Patterson. He was retired from the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare and was a member of American Legion Post 86 in Rockville. Survivors include four daughters, Brenda Reiser, formerly of Derwood, Barbara Jones of Virginia, Carla Becker of Virginia and Marcia Kinley of Frederick; one son, Bryan Patterson of Rockville; and 12 grandchildren and one great- grandchild. He was predeceased by another daughter, Patricia Patterson. Funeral services were held March 20 at Tri-County Baptist Church in Laytonsville and burial was at Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville.
