Lashmit Mrs. Katherine P. Lashmit, 82, of Derwood died April 24, 2004, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born May 22, 1921, in Texas, she was the daughter of the late Earl W. and Alma Moore Parker. She was the wife of Floyd R. Lashmit. Mrs. Lashmit attended Nashville High School and Garrett Business School. She was a secretary at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was of the Protestant faith. Her hobbies included reading, crocheting and cooking. Survivors in addition to her husband include two sons, David R. Lashmit and his wife, Natalie, of Massachusetts and Douglas A. Lashmit and his wife, Patricia, of Poolesville; a sister, Marjorie Parker of Derwood; and 10 grandchildren. Friends may visit at the Muriel H. Maddox Jr., 68, of Montgomery Village died April 24, 2004, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital from complications of prostate cancer. Born Aug. 3, 1935. in Tuskegee, Ala., he was the son of the late Samuel Maddox Sr. and Ernestine Jones. He was the husband of Jessie S. Maddox for 41 years. Mr. Maddox held a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from UCLA. He worked for IBM for 30 years, then for First Union Bank and most recently for Carefirst. Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Anne-Marie Maddox of Silver Spring and Theresa Maddox of Cleveland. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Hoggatt. There will be a viewing at 10 a.m. Thursday followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 1225 R St. NW, Washington, D.C. Feeney Mrs. Elizabeth Bailey Feeney, 89, of Gaithersburg, died April 21, 2004, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Born March 14, 1915, in Marble Rock, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Earl R. and Agatha Bailey. She was the wife of the late John W. Feeney for 35 years. Mrs. Feeney retired from her bookkeeping job at Mizell Lumber Co. in Kensington. She volunteered at the Bethesda Nursing Home, and her hobbies included reading and refinishing furniture. Survivors include three children, Kathleen Cottrell of Olney, Michael Feeney, and John Feeney and his wife, Sheila, of Gaithersburg; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Patrick Feeney, a daughter, Eileen Day, and a sister, Anne C. Bailey. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday at DeVol Funeral Home, Gaithersburg. King Grace Souder King, 90, of Damascus, died of cancer on April 26, 2004, at her home. Born July 23, 1913, on a farm that included the land presently occupied by Damascus Elementary School, Damascus High School and Ridgeview Shopping Center, she was a daughter of the late Archie and Sallie Purdum Souder. She was the wife of the late Clark F. King, a Damascus attorney and former assistant corporation counsel for the District of Columbia, for 70 years. Mrs. King graduated from Damascus High School at the age of 15 and attended Strayer Business School. She began working for Rockville attorney James H. Pugh in 1948. When he was elected judge of the Montgomery County Circuit Court in 1957, she became his personal secretary and worked for him until his retirement in 1972. She worked for several other judges and retired in 1978. Following retirement she volunteered for many years with the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Damascus Thrift Shop and was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include a son, Dan King; two daughters-in-law, Daria King and Alice King; two sisters, Helen Boyer and Jane Snapp; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Cramer Patsy Holley Cramer, 78, of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Damascus, died April 23, 2004, at Elm Croft Assisted Living in Halls, Tenn. Born Dec. 10, 1925, in Gibsland, La., she was the daughter of the late Clint R. and Mary E. Brown Baker. Twice married, she was the wife of the late Rev. Horace Preston Holley and the late Charles B. Cramer III. Mrs. Cramer was the manager of Citizens Savings & Loan in Damascus before her retirement. She was a member of Damascus United Methodist Church. Survivors include three children, Terry L. Holley of Knoxville, Tenn., Mary E. Holley of Lake Oswego, Ore., and H. Preston Holley Jr. and his wife, Judy of Damascus, and two grandchildren. Burger, 74, of Olney died April 22, 2004, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born Sept. 27, 1929, in Ohio, he was a son of the late Albert and Clara Poete Burger. He was the husband of Ann W. Burger for 50 years. Dr. Burger attended Ohio State University and received a bachelor of science degree in bacteriology. He also received a D.D.S. degree and had a dental practice in Olney from 1962 until 1999. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Dr. Burger was a member of the Olney Chamber of Commerce, the Olney Players Group and St. John's Episcopal Church in Olney, where he was a member of the Vestry for three years. Survivors in addition to his wife include four children, Julie A. Dieux of Shady Side, Md., Raymond C. Burger Jr. and wife Laurie of Mount Airy, Lisa W. Stanley and husband Lee of West River, and John P. Burger and wife Yvette of Mount Airy; two sisters, Julia Cornell of South Carolina and Rose Sullivan of Ohio; and 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Hast, 76, of Rockville, retired director of safety management for the U.S. Department of the Interior, died of a heart attack April 8, 2004, at Rockville. Born Nov. 4, 1927, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Norman R. Hast and Waneta Schauwecker. He was the husband of the late Jean W. Hast for 50 years. After graduation from high school, Mr. Hast attended Virginia Military Institute and served in the U.S. Army during the latter part of World War II. He was a 1951 graduate of the University of Maryland. Mr. Hast started his career in safety management as a sales engineer with Mine Safety Appliances Company of Pittsburgh. In 1967, he joined the National Park Service and served as chief, division of safety management from 1969 until 1974, when he was appointed to the position of director of safety and health in the U.S. Department of the Interior. He retired from that position in 1986. Survivors include two children, Catherine J. Hast of Berkeley, Calif., and Steven L. Hast and wife Julie of Torrance, Calif., and two grandchildren. A memorial service was held at the First Baptist Church of Rockville on April 17. Burial followed in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Aspen Hill. Matthews, 99, of Rockville, formerly of Silver Spring, died of heart failure April 25, 2004, at the National Lutheran Home, Rockville. Born Aug. 28,1904, in Lima, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Henry F. Schwartz and Martha Jane Harruff Schwartz. She was the wife of the late Robert Lee Matthews for 37 years. A resident of Montgomery County since 1969, she was founder of the Centralized Friendly Visitors Program of the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County, and volunteered for that group from 1971-88. She was a volunteer at the Montgomery County Thrift Shop Association and served as Recording Secretary of the Thrift Shop Board from 1972-74. The association recognized her for more than 1,000 hours of service in 1974. Mrs. Matthews was active in the Youth Swimming Program at the Silver Spring YMCA, helping disabled children in the pool. Stephen Knolls School in Kensington honored her in 1989, noting, "Your assistance over many years in our swim program at the Silver Spring YMCA made a significant difference in the lives of handicapped students." She volunteered for Common Cause and for the American Red Cross. In 1988 she appeared on a cable television program, "Fit After 80," demonstrating her yoga practices, an activity she took up when she was 70. In 1994, she was a panelist on a program for Montgomery County Victims of Violence. From 1932-69 she lived in Cleveland and Cleveland Heights, Ohio, where she was chairman of the Foreign Students Center of the Council on World Affairs, and was active in the International Visitors Committee and a member of the Utilian Club. She served as president and other offices in Parent Teacher Associations in several schools, and was chairman of the Cleveland Heights American Red Cross Drive in the 1950s. Mrs. Matt hews is survived by three children, Jane M. Hodgson and her husband Charles of Silver Spring, Nancy L. Matthews and Michael D. Matthews, both of Chevy Chase; a brother Paul F. Schwartz of Fort Wayne, Ind.; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother, Henry F. Schwartz Jr. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Albion, Ind. She worked as a secretary at BAE Systems for 23 years. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Meinke is survived by a son, Paul G. He was the husband of Darleen LaVonne (Madsen) Jones, his wife of 58 years. Born April 29, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio, he was a son of the late Gwilym Lewelym Price and Helen Edith Thomas Jones. Mr. Jones was a machinist and chief security and procurement officer with the Harry Diamond Lab in Washington, D.C. and Adelphi. He retired after 38 years of service. For the past 25 years he owned his own business, Laird's Locksmith Shop. Surviving besides his wife are two children: Dennis Laird Jones and his wife Pamela of Gaithersburg and Dianne Lynn Jones McCullen of Westminster; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, LaVerne Edith Jones McLean of San Diego. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Lee Shores of Ocean Pines; two sons, Ronald Scott Shores of San Jose, Calif., and Matthew David Shores and his wife, Tracy, of Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Joyce Klamut and her husband, George, of Dover, Ohio; and a brother, David Logan and his wife, Linda, of Campbell, Calif. Younkins Mrs. Belva Alberta Younkins, 92, of Washington Grove died May 1, 2004, at the Montgomery Village Health Care Center. Born Jan. 19, 1912 in Charles Town, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Ernest P. and Ada Finneyfrock Wood. She was the wife of the late Leon Reynolds Younkins. Mrs. Younkins was a member of Washington Grove United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included flowers and gardening. Survivors include two sons, William O. Younkins and his wife, Elizabeth, of Mount Airy and Lawrence R. Younkins of Gaithersburg; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, John Younkins. Funeral Home in Damascus. Jack E. McDaniel Jack E. McDaniel, 77, of Dunnellon, Fla., formerly of Silver Spring, died Feb. 2, 2004, at Legacy House, Ocala, Fla. He was a retired construction foreman. Mr. McDaniel was a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., and moved to Dunnellon from Silver Spring in 1980. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Dunnellon and served in the Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Grace; sons, William S. McDaniel and James A. McDaniel of Mesa, Ariz., Paul E. McDaniel of Irvine, Ky., and a daughter, Carol Diane Guinn of Ocala, Fla.; brother, James F. McDaniel of Olney; sister, Joan C. Rose Schumer Rose Rothwacks Schumer, 93, of Fair Lawn, N.J., and a former Silver Spring resident, died April 20, 2004, in Ridgewood, N.J. She worked in sales. She was preceded in death in 1993 by her husband Carl, whom she was married to for 56 years. After her husband's death, she lived in Silver Spring and Fair Lawn. Born April 14, 1911, and raised in Passaic, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Jacob Rothwacks and Fannie Roth. Mrs. Schumer is survived by her son David and his wife Lee of Silver Spring; a daughter, Barbara Walther and her husband Roger of Fair Lawn, N.J.; a sister, Janette Meltzer of Lantana, Fla., and two grandchildren. Burriss Sr. Robert Lee Burriss Sr., 80, of Damascus died May 5, 2004, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born April 4, 1924, in Layhill, he was the husband of Betty Burriss for 43 years. Survivors in addition to his wife include four children, Hazel Burriss of Florida, Edward Burriss of Virginia, Sandra Ramey and Alfred Burriss, both of West Virginia; six stepchildren, Linda Baggott, Helen Alley and Raymond Smallwood, all of Maryland, Ronnie Smallwood and Charles Smallwood, both of West Virginia, and Theresa Oakes of Virginia; and several grandchildren and great- grandchildren. "Mike" Rimmey, 79, of Damascus, died May 6, 2004, at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Born Jan. 27, 1925, in Centre Hall, Pa., he was a son of the late Edgar and Mary Neff Rimmey. He was the husband of Patricia L. Gearhart Rimmey for 53 years. Mr. Rimmey graduated from Centre Hall Potter High School in 1942 and earned a bachelor of science degree from Lock Haven University in 1950 and his master's in education from Penn State University in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Rimmey was a physical education teacher and coach in the public school system for 33 years. He taught at schools in the State College, Pa. area, Penn's Valley area at Spring Mills, Pa., Greenville High School in Greenville, Pa., and Damascus High School in Damascus. He was a member of State College Elks Club- Post 1600 and one of the original members of the Washington Metro slowpitch Hall of Fame, inducted in 1980. He was 1983 Maryland Senior Division Tenpin Bowling Champion and in 1999 was voted one of the top 25 soccer players of the 20th century at Lock Haven University. He was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church in Browningsville. His hobbies included golf and gardening. Survivors in addition to his wife include a son, Kevin D. Rimmey of Damascus; one sister, Ruth Lansberry of Centre Hall, Pa.; and three brothers, James Rimmey of Mingoville, Pa., Edgar Rimmey of Rural Centre Hall, Pa., and Donald Rimmey of State College, Pa. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Miriam Walker and Mary Bickhart, and one brother, William Rimmey. Funeral services were held Tuesday. The Rev. Henry Butler and the Rev. Mr. Smith was a member of the American Legion Post 86 of Rockville and Poolesville Presbyterian Church. Ford John Patrick Ford Jr., 37, of Frederick died May 7, 2004, at his home. Born Aug. 9, 1966, in Milwaukee, he was the son of Carol A. Ford of Germantown and John P. Ford of Gaithersburg. He was the husband of Tammy A. Ford. Mr. Ford was a member of the Apostolic Lighthouse Church of Frederick. He enjoyed playing softball and coached in the church softball league. Survivors in addition to his wife and parents include: two children, Danielle N. Ford and Morgan T. Ford; two brothers, Anthony C. Ford and his wife, Theresa, and Lance S. Barry William Culleen Barry William Culleen, 51, an inventory management specialist with the Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, died of acute respiratory arrest April 18, 2004, at his home in Gaithersburg. Born Aug. 9, 1952, in Takoma Park, he was the son of Rosa K. Culleen of Rockville and the late William B. Culleen. He was the husband of Barbara Ann Culleen. Mr. Culleen grew up in Rockville, graduated from Richard Montgomery High School and attended Montgomery College. He acted in plays in high school and college. He worked for the Shady Grove Music Fair, the Airflow Company, and Fairchild Industries before joining NOAA 12 years ago. Mr. Culleen was a Boy Scout who attained the rank of Life Scout. He played music in several bands, including the Aggregation, the King Pins, and Brew in the 1970s and early 1980s. He was a lifetime member of the Rockville Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and sang in the church choir. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, William Barry Culleen of Gaithersburg; a sister, the Rev. Caren Culleen of Cleveland; and a brother, Lawrence E. Culleen of Potomac. Miner Mrs. Frederika Mueller Miner, 93, of Gettysburg, Pa., and formerly of Montgomery Village, died May 10, 2004, in Gettysburg. Born April 17, 1911 in Minneapolis, she was the daughter of the late Paul L. and Ethel Babcock Mueller. She was the wife of the late Lewis S. Miner. Mrs. Miner was an accomplished seamstress, editor, award-winning watercolor artist and a record-setting swimmer. She served on the board of directors of the Montgomery Village YMCA for many years. Survivors include one son, Mark Miner of Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Bartram Mueller of Collierville, Tenn.; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Marcia Lange, and one brother, Richard Mueller. A memorial service will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Derwood. Marshall Mrs. Phoebe Miller Marshall, 80, of St. Leonard, died at her home May 5, 2004, of breast cancer. Born Nov. 25, 1923, in Maryland, she was the wife of the late John A. Marshall. Survivors include two sons, John A. Marshall and his wife, Adrienne, and Thomas A. Marshall and his wife, Sandra, and six grandchildren. Curtis Esther Mae Belle Curtis, 81, of St. Louis, Mo., formerly of Frederick and Rockville, died May 3, 2004, in St. Louis. Born Feb. 14, 1923, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late John William and Della Sophia (Loper) Osman. She was the wife of the late William R. Curtis, who died in 1984. Mrs. Curtis worked for the Montgomery County government in Rockville for 22 years and retired in 1978. She belonged to the Montgomery County Retired Employees Association and was a member of the Frederick Travel Club, First Baptist Church of Frederick and was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star 93 in Rockville. Survivors include a son, William R. Curtis of St. Louis; a brother, Walter Osman of Marana, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death in 2002 by a brother, Reed Osman. Private services and burial will be held June 13 in Goldvein, Va. Arrangements were made by Kutis Funeral Home in St. Louis. Leona M. Hinely Leona Meta (Ziegenmeyer) Hinely, 95, of Olney died May 3, 2004, at Lorien Assisted Living in Mount Airy. Born March 10, 1909, in Kirkwood, Mo., she was the daughter of the late William and Meta (Hansen) Ziegenmeyer. She was the wife of the late Reppard M. Hinely. Mrs. Hinely moved to Washington, D.C., in 1927 and worked as a secretary at the Treasury Department before World War II. Later she worked at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak. She was a charter member of Good Shepherd Methodist Church in Silver Spring, and her hobbies included reading, dining out and traveling. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy L. Johnson of Woodbine; two sons, Douglas M. Hinely of Derwood and Gregory R. Hinely of Silver Spring; and six grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Florence M. Werner, Willa V. Metz and Marion F. Thorsrud. Funeral services were held Saturday at Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home in Damascus. Born Dec. 14, 1980, in Silver Spring, he was the son of Rick Pelicano of Frederick and Therese L. McDonald Pelicano of Damascus. Mr. Pelicano was a 1999 graduate of Damascus High School and a senior at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. He was a musician and artist. "Betty" Zubovic, 84, formerly of Mount Airy, died May 16, 2004, at the Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg. Born Oct. 11, 1919 in Boston, she was a daughter of the late Alfred B. and Mary Mahr Coty. She was the wife of the late Peter Zubovic. Mrs. Zubovic served in the foreign service for many years. Her favorite post was China. She was proud to be an "Old China Hand." She also served in Turkey, Italy and several South American countries. She worked at the National Institutes of Health until her retirement. Her hobbies included traveling, playing golf, playing bridge and going to the theater. Mrs. Zubovic was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Damascus for 30 years and a member of the Catholic Daughters. Born Sept. 20, 1918, in Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Moses and Lela Williamson Harbison. She was the wife of the late Anthony Viviani. Survivors include six children, Deborah M. Viviani, Diane L. Jensen, Donna L. Hilton, Denise V. Dallatore, Toni V. King and Yvette Viviani, and seven grandchildren. Born Oct. 2, 1943 in Georgia, he was the son of Mary Benson and the late George Harrelson. Thomas Carlisle Roberts, 85, of Ashton died May 15, 2004, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. Born May 11, 1919, in Berwind, Colo., he was the husband of Genevieve R. Roberts for 63 years. Lt. Col. Roberts retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1982 after 26 years of service. He taught accounting for a year at Regis College in Denver, Colo. and served as the chief of financial policy and accounting in the Office of the Comptroller for the Defense Intelligence Agency. He earned a master of science degree in 1984 from American University. Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Betty J. Roberts of Sweinfort, Germany; a son, Steven T. Roberts of Ashton; a sister, Kathleen Roberts; and one grandson. Mary Alice Fitzpatrick Mary Alice "Mollie" Fitzpatrick, 84, formerly of Garrett Park, died May 7, 2004, of kidney failure in Columbia, S.C. Born in Philadelphia in 1920, she was the wife of the late George R. Fitzpatrick, former two-term mayor of the Town of Garrett Park. Mrs. Fitzpatrick spent 20 years working for the Kaiser Permanente office in Kensington and was an active member of the PTA at Garrett Park Elementary School. The Fitzpatricks came to Garrett Park in 1956 following a four-year tour of duty in Panama while Mr. Fitzpatrick was in the Navy and then on an assignment for the State Department. They later spent two years in Germany, where Mr. Fitzpatrick worked for a civilian firm monitoring U.S. military units. He served as the Garrett Park Mayor from 1974-78 in addition to four two-year terms as a member of the Town Council. Mrs. Fitzpatrick is survived by three children, Frances M. Thompson of Monrovia, Marla K. Schoolmeester of Columbia, S.C., and George R. Fitzpatrick Jr. of Oswego, Ore.; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild. A memorial service at the Garrett Park Town Hall is planned for later in the year. Arrangements were handled by the South Carolina Cremation and Memorial Society. John P. Ford John Patrick Ford Jr., 37, of Frederick died May 7, 2004, at his residence. Born Aug. 9, 1966, in Milwaukee, he was the son of Carol A. Ford of Germantown and John P. Ford of Gaithersburg. He was the husband of Tammy A. Ford. Mr. Ford was a member of the Apostolic Lighthouse Church of Frederick. He enjoyed playing softball and coached in the church softball league. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Ford is survived by two children, Danielle N. Ford and Morgan T. Ford; two brothers, Anthony C. Ford and his wife Theresa and Lance S. Ford and his wife Cynthia, all of Frederick; mother-in-law Mary Fontenot of Tennessee; four nieces and nephews; and numerous aunts and uncles. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. May 12 at the Apostolic Lighthouse Church of Frederick, 7857 Gambrill Park Road, Frederick. The Rev. Michael W. Mangolo will officiate.
