Benjamin (1811-1884) American Statesman born Aug., 6, 1811 in Danish West Indes then under temporary British occupation in the Napolonic wars. Now, U. S. owned Virgin Islands. Prominent in the Cabinet of the Confederate States of America (1861-1865). A confident of President of Jefferson Davis,was the only Jewish member of the Cabinet. Judah served as Attorney General, Secretary of War, Secretary of State. At the end of the war when General Lee surrendered to Grant, April 9, 1865, Judah made his way to Key West, Fl., and took a ship to England renewing his British citizenship. A leader of the English bar he wrote "A Treatise on the Law of Personal Property," (1868) known as "Benjamin on Sales," which is still a legal classic. He died in Paris, France May 6, 1884, where his wife and child lived a number of years. Buried in Paris in an undistinguished grave. In 1938 the Daughters of the Confederacy eracted a plaque on his grave recognizing his service to Mankind. His career is one of the most remarkable examples in modern history of successful struggles against adversity. John B.
