Donated By Florence Moore NOTE #3a: "THE EARLY SETTLERS OF MARYLAND, 1633-1680 of Hall of Records, Annapolis, MD" by Gust SKORDAS. Note that the term "Transported" is used uniquely. it means for this book, "someone other than the person indexed paid for his passage" -- not involuntarily transported as it usually meant that time frame. "Immigrated" means the individual furnished his own transportation to Maryland i.e. paid for his own passage. Those who brought themselves or others into early Maryland received 50 acres of land per head, i.e. per "head rights." That ceased 1683. [ the text all listings are alpha order. I have put them into family groupings where it was obvious they were together came at the same time, except for the James MOORE listings; he came alone. This was the 2nd consecutive listing. 1st listing gave the name William Moor in full. Is this any help? 3) Re "the connection I mentioned under the "MOORE Edgecombe Co" note WAS ONLY IN REFERENCE TO RUTH MOORE and the supposed link to Richard and Jane MOORE. It looks like Nathanal was disowned by Goshen mtg. 1760 "for disunity", although his children may have been Quakers. Hannah's parents were Quakers too. There are a very large number of misc. Quaker Moores in both Goshen and Concord mtgs, but in correspondence with Jinny Martin, she has never been able to tie Nathaniel with any of them. He just turned up in Goshen records for no known reason. There seems to be a strong connection between James MOORE and William MOORE; it has been suggested that perhaps William might have been a nephew. William was the son of Mary MOORE Ffalkner and perhaps a John MOORE who had come earlier. Mary we guess was widowed twice. This John is mentioned in land records. I found both two families in the birth records of the Index to Queen Anne Parish (Saint Barnabas Church). I'll try to post those tomorrow night. They are John Moor who married Elizabeth Danielson on Nov 7, 1706. Their sixth child is Mordecai Moor b. 17 Dec 1722. This is probably the one referred to in these land documents. I wonder if this John Moor and William might have been brothers..... Both had first sons named John Moor -- no JAMES MOOR'S. Back to William. His mother Mary MOORE Ffalkner married Hugh Riley, circa 1699 when she begins appearing on documents with Hugh. Hugh was a wealthy landowner & carpenter, like James MOORE. I believe William became one also. William and Rachel had twin sons b. 8 Feb 1702/3 who were named John Moor and Ryley MOORE. The William MOORE who signed deeds, etc. with a volkswagon type symbol, was the son of Mary MOORE Ffalkner. Per Dr. James R. MOORE, MOORE researcher: "William MOORE appears to have had close land ties with James MOORE sen, George MOORE [son of James Sr] and James MOORE Jun [son of James Sr], and he too became a carpenter like James Sen and so many other Moores southern Maryland. Karen 1) COLONIAL SOLDIERS OF THE SOUTH, 1732-1774 by Murtie June Clark, published by Gen. Publishing Co, Inc. Baltimore, 1983. found George MOORE and ALL HIS SONS TOGETHER on p. 105 on the Muster Roll of Captain Joseph Chapline's Co, Maryland Militia. In addition, I found most of Elizabeth's brothers & Mary Prather's brothers & father in the book, too. IT COVERS MARYLAND, VIRGINIA, NORTH & SOUTH CAROLINAS, GEORGIA, ETC. 2) In LUCAS GENEALOGY, they list our George MOORE on the property "Snowden's Friendship" on 13 May 1739. James and Mary (of these notes) is brother to Ruth who m. Ninian Beal. Also looks very much like Wm. son of Mary who m. Faulner and then m. Hugh Riley is closely related and near-neighbor to James and Ninean Beal. Question is, was Mary, mother of Wm, married to a MOORE, or perhaps mother of an illegitimate son, as per the sale of land from James MOORE to Wm. "natural son" of Mary MOORE, now Mary Faulkner. Proceedure for "separate" examination of the wife to determine whether or not she was selling willingly or under pressure to do so from her husband. What I'm wondering is whether the presence or absence of the notice about "separate examination" on the James and Mary deeds may have something to do with different origins of the land, ie; some of the land simply purchased by James, and the "others" perhaps inherited by Mary. I'm not sure of this, but guessing as to why some might have the notation and others not. looks like William is a nephew of James. My question is whether Mary, "natural mother" of William is James sister-in-law or James sister? The Mordecai of these deeds (at least of those posted so far, is not son of John, if that Mord. was b 1722. The one mentioned in Wayne's notes (wf Ursula) is Dr. Mordecai MOORE of Ann Ar. Co., a definite Quaker and a definite Welshman. He's believed to be the son of a Dr Richard MOORE who was persecuted in Wales with his friend Dr. Thomas Wynne, due to Quaker practices. Richard MOORE died there, and Wynn apparently took Mordecai under his "wing" as apprentice. Dr. Mord. was physician to the Calverts, but also a land speculator, merchant and businessman. He sought huge tracts from Pa. court for experimenting with tobacco farming around Duck Crk, Delaware He also shows strong ties with Philadelphia Quakers. He was married in Phila (after Ursula's death) as was his only known son, Dr. Richard. I also suspect, but cannot prove, that he's connected somehow to 2 groups of Moores in eastern Pa. James, the blacksmith of Phila., Merion, Blockley (who d bef 1704) and had only one KNOWN son (John who m. Jane Cureton). Nearby, and definitely from Radnor, Wales to Radnor, Pa. is the Quaker family of David Meridith who m. the "widow" Catherine MOORE (was she widow of a Richard there???? Was she mother of Dr. Mordecai????? No proof at all). David Meridith and wf Catherine MOORE Meridith came to Radnor, Pa with several MOORE children c 1680's. I think the MOORE children who came were Richard, John and a couple of daughters. I can check this exactly, if you want. John and Jane Cureton MOORE had a son Mordecai about whom nothing is known. There are also some very early refs. to a Mordecai in the same areas where they were living...deeds roughly 1702 or so. I'm doing all this from memory. We KNOW that David Meridith and Catherine MOORE were Welsh Quakers..Same with Dr. Mord. of Maryland. We know that James the blacksmith of Phila. was a Quaker, but we don't know where he came from. He was already here (somewhere?) when Penn hired him to work on his mill, wherever that mill was. In exchange for his work on the mill, Penn gave him some land in Merion, smack in the middle of the "Welsh tract". Actually, he requested "payment" in land located there. So we don't know if he was Welsh, but he was surrounded by Welsh Quakers there. He also had sons Richard and James and several daughters. It's especially interesting to hear that John and Elizabeth Danielson had a son Mordecai too. Seeing a few surnames that I recognize from Pa. sources among Wayne's deeds makes me wonder about a possible connection of some kind. And since we don't know where James the blacksmith came from, Penn might have hired him locally, perhaps even from Maryland, which seems to have been pretty well established long before Philadelphia was set up in the 1680's. the "Snowdon" property. A) To the best of my knowledge, these are the children of George MOORE and Elizabeth Lucas: 1- MARY MOORE, b. 11 May 1716 in Queen Anne Parish, Prince Edward Co, MD. VERIFIED. I'm told she married William Scott. 2- GEORGE MOORE, b. 7 July 1717 in Queen Anne Parish, >> Prince Geo's Co, MD. 3- SARAH MOORE, b. 1718 probably Prince Geo's Co, MD. Not verified, though I have found her listed in 2 well documented books--but only her name, no info. 4- son MOORE, 1720 in Prince Geo's Co -- not verified. 5- Martha MOORE, b. 1728, MD, probably Prince Geo's Co. VERIFIED. She married Henry Vanmeter c. 1743, very likely in same area of MD, died in Green Co, PA. 6- Aaron MOORE b. circa 1729. Revol. War Ensign. Served in Maryland Militia. Removed from MD to Springhill Twp, in what became Fayette Co, PA. Bought property there in 1769. Died in 1785, testate. 7) SIMON [Simion or Simeon] MOORE b. ?? I found him in Tenmile Country=2E His 2 sons served in the Revolutionary War. He married Keziah (------). This info is not verified. Info on him in "Tenmile Country......" 8) CAPT. JOHN MOORE b. 5 Jul 1735 Prince Geo's Co, MD, per DAR Patriot Index. Served in Revolutionary War--apparently a hero. Went to Redstone and German Townships in what became Fayette Co, PA. 9) EZEKIEL MOORE b. ?? Very little info on him. Married 1. Sarah Graham 2) Jean ???? Wanda Chudeusz is his descendant. I don't know if the list is complete or totally accurate. Haven't found any records of their birth yet. George MOORE + Thomas Prather, a Sprigg or two, and lots of others in the Monocacy Valley in 1730's & 1740's. By the 1766 tax list, George either died or moved on with Aaron MOORE to PA. Aaron's brother's John and Ezekiel are still there then, but who knows about Aaron yet? . There are two properties that are mentioned for George: "Chancey" in 1741 and "Snowden's Friendship"--1739 in the Monocacy Valley which became Frederick Co in 1748 and then Washington Co in 1776. Where would I find info on them? Apparently, George bought them from whoever had patented them. 3 George MOORE's living at the same time in Early MD] buying land "in the Rock Creek District on 13 May 1739. This survey was caled 'Snowden's Friendship' and consisted of 84 acres." [p. 409, LUCAS GENEALOGY] 2nd piece of land was "Chancey" in 1742. = I have wondered if William were an illegitmate son, too. Does anyone know what "natural" son in those days meant? George MOORE in the Monocacy Valley in 1733 and until before 1766, along with his sons John & Ezekiel [who md Sarah >>> Graham I am told]. BUT INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, EVERYWHERE I FOUND MY GEORGE--I ALSO FOUND A WILLIAM MOORE & A JOHN MOORE--who would not have been George's son, since he was born in 1735 per DAR Patriot Index. Also found a Joseph MOORE and a Thomas MOORE, too. Not sure to whom they belong. Wonder if these two men were George's brothers? They isn't a "James MOORE" anywhere that we found--NONE. There are some great books out on the pioneers of the Monocacy Valley, which was above Wash. D.C. on the Monocacy River. This area became Fred. Co. in 1748 & 1776 Wash. Co. But the Indians didn't leave until 1720's. called the Monocacy Hundred--and Thomas Prather, father-in-law to Aaron MOORE [1], George's son, is EVERYWHERE I FIND GEORGE MOORE. We found Riley [Ryley] MOORE, one of William's twins in the Virginia Militia. I think I recall Karen McClain saying he went to the Shenandoah Valley in VA. He had a brother named William MOORE, who might have gone to the Carolina's. Also I kept running into "Daniel" MOORE=2E To whom does he belong? Re Riley MOORE-- found the birth of his son (see p. 4) & in "COLONIAL SOLDIERS OF THE SOUTH" p. 443 "Virginia Militia: "A Return of Provisions, etc for the Cherokee Indians commanded by the Young Warrior under my conductment from Winchester in Frederick County to Wassers (Vass') Fort on Ronoke [as spelled], June 1757." William and John could have gone to Frederick Co, but I have no data to separate out the John MOORE's there, except when John MOORE is attached to Ezekiel MOORE--then I know they were sons of my George MOORE. Gen. warrants to the Surveyor Gen. for 400 acres of land. Return next January 2." [SO, THEY DEMANDED 400 MORE ACRES. Jane is not shown as Jane Godson.] Richard MOORE, if it is the same Richard, then makes 3 more trips. The one 1669 definitely puts him with this family. Perhaps he was taking care of business in England?? KAREN'S CONCLUSIONS: 1) Richard MOORE died July 1654. 2) Peter Godson proposed to marry his widow, Jane W. MOORE, but we don't know if they did marry. 3) these abstracts I was sent, I see no more mention of daughters or granddaughters [EARLY SETTLERS quotes "daughters"] Mary and Ann. BUT Vol=2E 10 p. 433, 20 Dec 1655, mention is made of "John Hambleton, wife Temperance, daughter of Richard MOORE, decease." So Temperance married John Hambleton by then. Vol. 41 1658-1662, p. 158, "7 Oct 1658, John Hambleton, guardian of the orphans of Richard MOORE, and having the stock of the orphans his possesion resulted from order of 31 Dec 1657 duly executed by sheriff's order, suit non-suited and John to pay 300 lbs of tobacco." 1)Nowhere "EARLY SETTLERS..." is there mention of a daughter named Ruth or a son named James MOORE, nor any of the other documents mentioning members of this family. 2) Unless other researchers years ago found something we haven't, I cannot see any connection between Richard & Jane Moore [Moor] and James MOORE, or his sister Ruth MOORE who married Col. Ninean Beall. I think the assumed connection remained alive, when no one disproved it. 3) James MOORE bought his 1st property that I know of 1671, Four Hills, so he and Richard Jr. were probably of a similar age. 4) Richard & Jane Moore's sons: Roger, Richard & Timothy might be the missing link for some of our loose MOORE's with no parents. "MOORE FAMILY HISTORY...In 1607 the colony of Virginia was founded by John Smith. Pocahontas, an Indian maiden whose father was Chief Powahatan, saved Smith's life when he was threatened by Indians. "Later, John Rolfe, a prominent figure in early Virginia, educated and civilized Pocahontas after he married her. They went to England where she was presented to Queen Elizabeth I, who made her a Lady and gave her the Christian name of Lady Rebecca. A son was born to the couple when they were in England. The first name of John Rolfe's son is unknown; however, it might have been John. "Lady Rebecca Rolfe, while returning to the Colonies, became ill and died. Her husband reached the Colonies with their infant son. "Years later, another Virginia named James MOORE, who had been carried off to Ohio by raiding Shawnee Indians that killed most of his family, returned to Tazewell County, Virginia, where he married the great-granddaugher of Sir John and Lady Rebecca Rolfe. The maiden name of James MOORE's wife, whose father was of German descent, was Rebecca Walk. "James MOORE had a large family, joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was a highly respected citizen. One of James MOORE's sons, Isaac, had a son named Amos who became a noted figure in his community. "Amos MOORE, in the years before the Civil War, was violently opposed to slavery and he conducted an underground railroad to Canada for Negro slaves. He had been warned that his life was in danger, moved to Lawrence County, Ohio. With him came his seven sons and one daughter. His wife was dead at the time he moved to Ohio. The names of his eight children were Stanton, Isaac, Martin, Alfred (born in 1842), Enoch, William, Austin, and Jane. Jane married a Mr. Barber. Amos MOORE's father, Isaac, also moved to Ohio with him." "A FAMILY THAT BROUGHT A CHURCH...One of the early families of Lawrence County was instrumental in bringing a church denomination into this locality. The reference is to the MOORE family in Fayette Township. They were radical aboli- tionists in Virginia before coming to Ohio and not only brought the doctrine of anti-slavery with them but also strong religious tendencies. "Rev. Isaac MOORE was the patriarch and both he and his son Amos MOORE were ministers of the gospel. They built a log church on Solida Creek near Sulphur Springs and there was organized the First Methodist Protestant Church in Lawrence County. This church was later reorganized and rebuilt on the hill near Sutton farm and is still standing and is known as Lebanon Church. --------------68966C413DEE--
