She was the wife of Lt. Col. George W. Cochran Jr.; mother of Mary Hovey, Ann Jordan, James, Michael and John Cochran and the late Teresa; and grandmother of nine. John Kenneth Rawlings of Accokeek passed away Sept. 6. He is survived by his wife, Carol McPeak Rawlings; two daughters, Elizabeth Rawlings and Cara L. Rawlings; and granddaughter Rehan A. Rawlings. A memorial service was held Sept. 13 at Christ Episcopal Church on Farmington Road in Accokeek at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Association. *****Oct. 10, 2002***** Henry Elmo Willett of Piscataway passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25. He is survived by his sister, Mary B. Werner. His siblings who preceded him were Mary Thelma Ruble, I. Frances Evans and William E. Willett Jr. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Piscataway, with interment in the church cemetery. Huntt Funeral Home made the arrangements. U.S. Air Force retiree Col. Charles T. "Chuck" Merrill, formerly of Camp Springs, died Sept. 18 in Reston, Va. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha. Survivors include his wife, June, and three daughters, Carolyn, Martha and Grace, and their families. Mary Teresa Duffy Walton, 52, a Drug Enforcement Administration budget analyst, died at her home in Huntingtown Sept. 6. She was a graduate of La Reine High School in Suitland. Survivors include her husband, Charles Harden "Buddy" Walton Jr.; four children; five siblings and a granddaughter. U.S. Air Force retiree Col. Charles T. She also leaves behind a grandson and four great-grandchildren. *****Oct. 17, 2002***** Eric H. Jones Eric H. Jones, 48, of Seminole, Fla., died Oct. 10 at his residence. He was born in the District and served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Jones graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in marketing and moved to Seminole in 1993, where he had been employed in sales for Diamond Elliott of Largo. He attended Aldergate United Methodist Church and is survived by his wife, Anne Doyle-Jones, of Seminole; two step-daughters, Beverly and Lauren Barr of Clearwater; his parents, John and Marion Jones of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Michael Jones of Shadyside and Bryan Jones of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Caydie Jones of Clearwater; and two nephews. Veterans Cremation & Burial Society in Clearwater, Fla., handled the arrangements. Mary Hennings Herbst Mary Hennings Herbst of Fort Washington, a real estate agent who also taught music in Prince George's County Schools, died Sept. 4. She was a former choir director at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband, Albert O. Herbst; three children, three siblings and eight grandchildren. Marjorie Louise Gates Marjorie Louise Gates of Fort Washington passed away Sept. 16 at Georgetown University Hospital in the District. She was a lifelong resident of Prince George's County, born May 7, 1932, in Seat Pleasant to the late Mutt and Daisy Moreland. She loved the Redskins, was an avid bowler and loved to watch her children and grandchildren play sports. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bobby Moreland. She is survived by her husband, Clarence "Butch" Maynard Gates Sr., whom she married at St. Barnabus Church in Oxon Hill Jan. 21, 1954; sons, Clarence "Manny" Gates Jr. of Mechanicsville, Robert Gates of Orlando, Fla., Kevin Gates of Fort Washington, Michael Brooks of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Steve Brooks of Seattle; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a brother, Sonny Moreland, of Boca Raton, Fla. Jack Elliott Montgomery Sr. Jack Elliott Montgomery Sr. of Waldorf, formerly of Accokeek, passed away Sept. 20 in his home after a long bout with cancer. He was 68 years old. Born Dec. 12, 1933, he was the son of the late John A. and Anna L. Montgomery. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Eddie, Elwood and Clifford, and sisters Lela Lantz and Margie Love. He is survived by his wife, Florence Frances Montgomery; three sons, Jack E. Montgomery Jr. and Gary Montgomery, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Mark A. Montgomery of Pasadena, Md.; brothers John Montgomery of Fort Washington and Warren Montgomery; sister Louise Lacey of Milford, Del.; grandchildren Nathan, Amanda, Amber, Stephanie and Alyson; and great-granddaughter, Ashley. Funeral services were held at Huntt Funeral Home in Waldorf Tuesday, Sept. 24, with the Rev. Robert Eaby officiating. Interment was held at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham. Huntt Funeral Home made the arrangements. Edna Mae "Nanny" Ford Edna Mae "Nanny" Ford passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the age of 83. She lived in Bethesda-Kensington and was a childcare provider to a host of children in the area throughout her life. She is survived by daughters Mary Ford of Maryland and Joyce Sebastian of Arizona, and sons James E. Ford Jr. of Takoma Park and William Ford of Deal. A son, William Toombs, preceded her. Four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive her. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. at Collins Funeral Home in Silver Spring, with interment at Monocacy Cemetery in Beallesville. Marvin Whitmore Marvin Whitmore, of Pasadena, died Oct. 12 at the age of 67. Whitmore was born in Maryland on Aug. 26, 1935. He worked for 39 years as a computer technician for the National Security Agency. He retired on Jan. 2. He is survived by his wife Leah Whitmore, son the Rev. Dennis Whitmore of Laurel, sister Carol Haltermen of Warfordsburg, Pa., and brothers Jack Whitmore of Waukegan, Ill., and Robert Whitmore or Ellerslie, Ga. Funeral services were held Wednesday at McCully-Polyniak in Pasadena. *****Oct. 31, 2002***** Charles F. Cooper died of heart failure on Sept. 29 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Fla. He was 69. Cooper was born June 7, 1933, in Washington, D.C., where he graduated from Anacostia High School. He began work for the state of Maryland as a tax assessor in Prince George's County in 1965. When Cooper was transferred to Worcester County in 1978, he and his family moved to Ocean Pines. In 1990, he and his wife moved to Selbyville, Del. Cooper retired from the state of Maryland in 1993, before relocating to Lakeland, Fla., in 1994. Cooper is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughters Linda Thompson of Denton, Texas, and Lori Lewis of Lakeland, Fla.; and a brother, John, of Myrtle Beach, S.C. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Steven and Meredith Lewis of Lakeland, Fla., Andrew, Megan and Katherine Thompson of Denton, Texas, and Monica Ann Thompson of San Diego.
