                      WILL OF DAVID CRAUFURD
                  Resident of Prince Georges County, Maryland
                       Died May 27, 1801, Upper Marlboro   

In the name of God Amen.  I David Craufurd of Prince Georges County and
State of Maryland, being sick and weak in Body, but of sound disposing mind
and Memory do make and publish this my last Will and Testament.  Imprimis,
I commit my Soul into the hands of almightly God and my body to the earth
to be buried in my family burying Ground,  and my Just Debts being paid I
give and bequeath to my dear son Nathaniel Craufurd his Heirs and assigns,
the Land which I took up under a warrant of Resurvey on Several Tracts of
Land, in which said warrant my dear wife Sarah Craufurd was Joined the
lands then being in Frederick County, but now in Montgomery County near the
great falls of Pototmac and included in a tract of Land called Craufurd
Lodge, and including a tract of Land that I purchased of Thomas John
containing about Nine acres, the whole now contains about Nine Hundred
acres, I do also give and bequeath to my said Son Nathaniel Craufurd his
Heirs and assigns a tract or Parcel of land it being an Island near the
Great falls of Potomac and called Bishops Island containing about Forty
three and one half acres, also I give to my said son Nathaniel one Mahogany
Dining Table that matches one which I formerly gave him and do hereby
confirm a Deed of gift I gave him for several Negro Slaves.  
ITEM,  I do hereby direct my Executors hereafter to be appointed to pay to
my friend and son-in-law Richard Forrest Eight Hogsheads of Good Tobacco at
Georgetown warehouse out of my crop in Montgomery County.
ITEM, it is my desire, and I do hereby give and bequeath to my two Sons
Nathaniel Craufurd and David Craufurd and in case of their Death to my
Friends John Read Magruder Junior and Alexander Contee Magruder the
following Property lying and being in Montgomery County State of Maryland
one tract or Parcel of Land called part of Thompsons pasture Purchased of
George Viley containing about one Hundred two and one half acres, one other
tract or Parcel of Land called "All I can get" purchased of Jonathan
Simmons containing about Seventy Seven and one half acres, two other tracts
or Parcels of Land that I purchased of Henry Childs one parcel called
Thompsons pasture containing about Thirty Seven and one half acres, the
other tract or parcel called Thompsons pasture containing about Fifty Three
and one half acres, three small tracts or parcels of Land which I took up
one called Good Timber containing about twelve and one half acres, one
other tract or parcel called Point lookout containing about twenty three
and one half acres, the other tract or parcel of Land called  The resurvey
on the Great fall Branch containing about Eighteen acres, those Lands all
lie in Montgomery County, in the vicinity of the Great Falls of Potomac,
also the following Negro Slaves, Dyer Dick and his Wife (??), Carpenter
Tuck and his Wife and children, Lucy daughter of Dinah and all her
children, Phill, son of Dyer Dick with the future encrease of all the
female Slaves, also all the Stock of Black Cattle, Horses, Sheep and Hogs
with all the Plantation utensils and the crop of every kind that is on the
above named Lands at the time of my Death that I have devised in trust to
my Daughter Sarah Forrest, also one Silver Coffee Pot and a new silver pint
can both marked with the cypher D.S.C.  Six Silver table spoons, Six Silver
desert Spoons, and a Silver waiter all marked M.C.  One Feather bed and
furniture compleat as it now Stands in the blue room up Stairs with a
Mahogany Dressing table and one feather Bed and furniture and a Mahogany
chest of drawers that are in the Girls room below stairs.  The several
tracts or parcels of Land above mentioned with the Several Slaves, plates
and Furniture are given to the said devisees in trust and for the express
purpose, use, benefit and advantage of my Daughter Sarah Forrest during her
natural life, and after Death, I give and devise and do will and direct the
said property the Lands and Negroes Stock Plate and Furniture unto my Grand
Daughter Sarah Forrest and in case of her death before she marries or
arrives at full age I give and bequeath the said property,  to wit one
Tract of Land called Thomsons pasture"one other Tract or parcel of Land
called All I can get" one other tract or parcel of Land called Thomsons
pasture, one other tract or parcel of Land called Thomsons pasture, one
other tract or parcel of Land called Good Timber, one other tract or parcel
of Land called Point lookout, and one other tract or parcel of Land call
The resurvey on the great Falls Branch all lying and being in Montgomery
County near the great falls of Potomac with all the Slaves, Stock plate and
Furniture before mentioned to her two Brothers my Grandsons Julius Forrest
and David Murry Forrest their Heirs and assigns as Tenants in common and
not as Joint Tenants.
ITEM,  I do give and bequeath  to my Grand Daughter Sarah Offut Craufurd
one Negro woman named Suck Daughter of Lucy with all her present and future
encrease.
ITEM,  I do give to my Grand Daughter Ann Craufurd one Negro Woman named
Hager Daughter of Suck living on my farm in Montgomery County with the
encrease of said slave Hager.
ITEM, I give to my Grandson Julius Forrest one Negro Woman named Bet with
her two children Charlie and Maria with the future encrease of the females
from the Date of this Will - also I do give to my Grandson Julius Forrest
his Heirs and assigns one Lot of Ground in the City of Washington number
fourteen in Square two hundred and fifty four upon his arrival at the age
of Eighteen but in case he should Die before he arrives at that age, I then
give and devise the Said Lot and Slaves to his Brother David Murry Forrest
his Heirs or assigns.
Item, I give and devise to my Grandson David Craufurd Son of Nathaniel
Craufurd and to his Heirs and assigns one Lot of Land in that part of the
City of Washington called Carrollsburgh number Eleven in Square Six Hundred
and Sixty-one.
Item, I give and bequeath to my Grandson David Murry Forrest the following
Slaves living on my farm in Montgomery County, to wit: - Suck and her
Children Len, Lartus, Polly, Rachel and Len, wife Sall Daughter of Dyer
Dick with all their present and future encrease from the date of this my
Will,  upon his arrival at the age of Eighteen, but in case of his Death
before he arrives at that age, then I gave the said Slaves to his Brother
Julius Forrest.
ITEM, I do give to my Nephew Thomas Nicholls Son of Mr. Edward Nicholls the
sum of Fifty Pounds to be Expended in his education, which sum shall be
paid out of the Property that I shall direct to be Sold in Montgomery
County.
ITEM, I direct that the Money due to me from Doctor William Thornton of the
City of Washington be laid out in improving the Lot, which I have given to
my Grandson Julius Forrest.
ITEM, I direct that all the negro Slaves that I have on my farms in
Montgomery County except those which I have devised or given away or may
devise or give away with all the crops on the farms, Plantation utensils
and Stock of every kind be sold.  The sale to be made by my two sons
Nathaniel Craufurd and David Craufurd and the Money therefrom arising to be
invested in Bank Stock or let out on Interest, as they shall deem most
advantageous and the interest to be paid annually to my two Grandsons
Julius Forrest and David Murry Forrest for their support and education, the
principal sum I leave to the said Julius Forrest and David Murry Forrest,
when they or either of them arrive to the age of twenty one years, but out
of these Sales is to be paid the sum of Fifty Pounds current Money before
bequeathed to my nephew Thomas Nicholls - and it is my earnest request and
direction that the Slaves be sold in families and not Separated without
their Express desire, and as far as it can be done, that they have the
privilege of choosing the Purchasers, even altho a Sacrifice as to price
should be the consequence.
ITEM, I direct that my mulattoe Girl named Kitty and her Brother Joe be
liberated and set free at the age of twenty. They formerly belonged to my
dear Daughter Martha Walker and it was her request that they should be Set
free at that age.
ITEM, I do give and bequeath to my Son David Craufurd his Heirs and assigns
the Tract of Land called Kingston park with the Tract of Land which I
purchased of William Sprigg Bowie both tracts or parcels of Land containing
about Seven Hundred acres and lying and being in Prince Georges County near
the Town of Upper Marlbro, also a tract or parcel of Land adjoining the
other lands which I purchased of Dr. William Beans containing about one
Hundred and fourteen acres, likewise a small piece of Meadow Ground which I
took up adjoining the said lands, but have not yet the patent - also I give
and bequeath to my said Son David Craufurd and his Heirs and assigns my
Dwelling House out Houses with all the lots, and other improvements which I
have in the town of Upper Marlbro, likewise two lots in the City of
Washington one lot numbered seventeen in Square five, the other lot number
one in Square one hundred and seventy two.  I do also give and bequeath to
my said Son David Craufurd the following Negro Slaves to wit, Phillis and
her son Smith Will, Both Keadle Will, John Betts Grandson Sall and her two
Children Miller Harry Sambo Jack Boatswain Moses Will and his Wife Janey
with all their Children Jim (a carpenter) Will Nancy Sall, Peg, Jack, Lucy
and her Children Jim, Abraham Len and Daniel Charles (a carpenter) and his
Wife Polly and all their Children Lartus Bell Lucy and her child Mary and
her child Polly Daugher Phillis and all her children Grace, Amy,
Batchelore, Ben and Will, Sampson and his wife Sarah on my farm in
Montgomery County with the future encrease of all the female Slaves from
the date of his Will with a waggon and four Horses from my farm in
Montgomery County.  I do also give to my Son David Craufurd his Heirs or
assigns all the remainder of my Estate of every kind and Sort real and
Personal except what I have before devised or given away with with all the
Debts that are due me on Bond Note or otherwise, Except the debt which I
have before devised my son David to pay all my Debts which at this time are
but Small.
Lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my two sons Nathaniel Craufurd
and David Craufurd Executors of this my last Will and Testament revoking
and annulling all former Wills by me heretofore made, ratifying and
confirming this and  and  none other to be my last will and Testament.  In
Testimony whereof  I have hereunto Set my hand and affixed my Seal this
tenth day of May in the year Eighteen Hundred and one.

Signed sealed published and declared by David Craufurd the above mentioned
Testator as for his last Will and Testament in the Presence of us who at
his request and in his presence have subscribed our names as witnesses
hereto.
