We encourage links to the state and county table of contents. ____________________________________________________________________________ Will of Nathaniel Craufurd Resident of Prince Georges County, Maryland Made May 5, 1809 In the name of God Amen, I Nathaniel Craufurd of Prince Georges County in the State of Maryland being of Sound and disposing mind memory and understanding do make and ordain this my Last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say-- Imprimis. I will and direct that all my Estate both real and personal shall be kept together by my Executors herein after named untill my Son Thomas Blackburn Craufurd shall arrive to the age of twenty two years. During which period all the crops made on my different plantations and other profits thence arising as also the crop or crops on hand at the time of my decease shall be applied to the discharge of my just debts except what may be necessary for the Maintenance and Suppport and Education of my wife and Children, and in the event of the profits arising from my Estate not being Sufficient to discharge my Just debts within the period above mentioned, I do hereby further will and direct that the balance then remaining due Shall be paid by my Several Legatees in equal proportions agreeably to the amount of their respective Legacies. ITEM. I give devise and Bequeath unto my wife Sarah B. Craufurd, from and after my Son Thomas B. Craufurd Shall arrive at the age of twenty two years during her widowhood or Single Life, a tract of Land Called Greenwood Park or Greenwood Park enlarged whereon I now dwell containing within the following metes and bounds, to wit, beginning at a bound Stone planted at the end of the twentieth line of Greenwood Park enlarged and running with the twenty first Lines of Greenwood Park, and also the lines of Greenwood Park enlarged in Succession to the Land purchased of the Heirs of Basil Warring Deceased, then with the Lines of Greenwood Park and Greenwood Park enlarged until it intersects a South Line drawn from the aforesaid Stone, supposed to contain about Seven hundred and fifty-five acres together with my dwelling House and all other Improvement thereon, all which property I give and devise to my Said Wife Sarah B. Craufurd during her Single Life. And at her death or Marriage which shall first happen, I give devise and bequeath the said Land herein before given to my wife during her single Life together with all the dwellings and other improvements thereon, to my Son Nathaniel Craufurd his heirs and assigns forever. ITEM. I give and bequeath unto my wife Sarah B. Craufurd when my Son Thomas B. Craufurd Shall arrive at the age of twenty two years during her Single Life the following negros to wit., James, Osborn, Will, Charles, Bill, Hoss, Rachel, Big Peg, and her two children, Milley and Lewis, Bet and her two Children, Daphne and Charles, Peter, Little Isaac, Esther, Fanny, Little Peg, and her four Children Daniel, Poll, Esther and John, Jenny and her Child Rass, Ben and Harry together with my Carriage and carriage horses, all my household and Kitchen furniture and all my Liquors and to her provisions at the time of my death, all which property is hereby given my Wife during her Single Life and no Longer, provided She Should Marry, but in case my said wife Sarah B. Craufurd Should never marry again then and in that case I give and bequeath the above mentioned negros, together with their future increase unto my Said Wife, as also all my household and Kitchen furniture to be disposed of in Such manner as She in her discretion may think proper, but should my said wife marry again, then and in that case, I give and bequeath all the negros and their future increase and all the household and Kitchen furniture and other personal property herein before devised to her , unto my five childred, Nathaniel Craufurd, Thomas B. Craufurd, Bushrod W. Craufurd, David Craufurd and Marion Craufurd,-- to be equally divided between them Share and Share alike. ITEM. I give devise and bequeath unto my son Nathaniel Craufurd on his arriving to the age of twenty one years all the Lands heretofore purchased by me of the representatives of Basil Warring Deceased, called Warrings Grove or by whatever name it may be Legally called Containing about ninety four acres together with the mill and other improvements thereon to him the said Nathaniel Craufurd his heirs and assigns forever, and when my son Thomas B. Craufurd arrives to the age of twenty two years I give and bequeath unto my Said Son Nathaniel Craufurd the following negros to wit. Ned, Sam, Falls Charles, Falls Bill, George Son of Little Peg, Tom Son of Hagar at the falls, Suck and her two Children, Tom and Sy or Josias, Poll daughter of big Begg, Bett, Grace, Anthony Son of Jenny and their future increase, unto him the Said Nathaniel Craufurd and his heirs forever also my watch to be delivered to him immediately after my decease. ITEM. I give devise and Bequeath unto my two sons Thomas B. Craufurd and Bushrod Washington Craufurd, when my son Thomas B. Craufurd Shall arrive to the age of twenty two years, all the remaining part of my tract of Land called Greenwood Park and Greenwood Park enlarged not herein before devised, and all the Lands I purchasd of John M. Burgess, being part of a tract of Land called Westphalia or by whatever name or names the Same may be Legally Called, together with a small tract or parcel of Land which I received in exchange from Francis Magruder Called Federal Hills, or by what ever name or names the same may be Legally Called to be equally divided between them the Said Thomas B. Craufurd and Bushrod W. Craufurd their heirs and assigns forever, not as Joint Tenants but as tenants in common. ITEM. I give and bequeath unto my Son Thomas B. Craufurd when he arrives to the age of twenty two years the following negros to wit. Big Daniel, Phil, Pig Isaac, Nell and William, Children of Rachel, Old Pol and her daughter Marg and her child Moses, to him the said Thomas B. Craufurd and his heirs forever. ITEM. I give and bequeath unto my Son Bushrod W. Craufurd when my son Thomas B. Craufurd Shall arrive to the age of twenty two years, the following negros to wit. Little Daniel, Dick, Jim, Stephen, Lucy, Missy and Catee, daughter of big Pegg to him the said Bushrod Washington Crafuurd and his heir forever. ITEM. I give and devise and bequeath unto my Son David Craufurd when my Son Thomas B. Crafuurd shall arrive at the age of twenty two years, my tract of Land in Montgomery County, near the Great Falls of Patomac River called Cool Spring Level Containing Two hundred and twenty five and a half acres being part of a tract of Land now called Craufurds Lodge, together with two hundred and twenty five acres more of the said tract called Craufurds Lodge, to be Laid off as Convenient and near to the Said Tract Called Coolspring Level as can conveniently be done, to him the said David Craufurd his heirs and assigns forever. ITEM. I give devise and bequeath unto my son Nathaniel Craufurd from and after my son Thomas B. Craufurd shall arrive at the age of twenty two years, during the Single Life of his mother the use and profits of the residue of my Lands in Montgomery County and upon the death or marriage of his mother which shall first happen, I give devise and bequeath the same, that is to Say all my Lands in Montgomery County not herein before devised to my Son David, unto my Daughter Marion Craufurd and her heirs forever, but in case my Said Daughter Marion Should die without Lawfull issue then and in that case I give devise and Bequeath and do hereby will and direct that the Same Shall go to my Son David Craufurd his heirs and assings forever, upon condition that he pay to my two Sons Thomas B. Craufurd and Bushrod Washington Craufurd the Sum of three hundred pounds current money Each. ITEM. I give and bequeath unto my Son David Craufurd when my Son Thomas B. Craufurd Shall arrive at the age of Twenty two years the following negros to wit, Peter, Jack, Joley, Ned and Linney his wife and her Children except her eldest Son, heretofore devised to my Son Nathaniel , and old Rass together with all my Stock and plantation utensils upon my Lands in Montgomery County, at the time of my Deceased, to him and his heirs forever. ITEM. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Marion Craufurd when my Son Thomas B. Craufurd arrives at the age of twenty two years the following negros to wit. Susan and her Children Dick, Ann, John, Phill and Ned and their future increase to her the said Marion Craufurd and her heirs forever. ITEM. I give and bequeath unto my four Sons Nathaniel Craufurd, Thomas B. Craufurd, Bushrod Washington Craufurd and David Craufurd each one share in the Washington Tontine and I do herely will and direct that each of my said sons shall have and possess the share taken in his own name. ITEM. I give Devise and Bequeath unto my Daughter Marion Craufurd one Lot in Carrollsburgh in the City of Washinton to her the said Marion Craufurd and her heirs forever. ITEM. When my Son Thomas B. Craufurd shall arrive at the age of twenty two years I give and bequeath to my Wife Sarah B. Craufurd her choice of one third of my Stock and plantation utensils on my Lands in Prince Georges County , and the residue thereof I give and bequeath unto my three sons Nathaniel Craufurd, Thomas B. Craufurd, and Bushrod W. Craufurd their heirs, executors, and administrators, to be equally divided among them Share and Share alike. Lastly I do hereby Constitute and appoint my wife Sarah B. Craufurd , Executrix and my Brother David Craufurd and my son Nathaniel Craufurd, Executors, of this my Last Will and Testament, revoking all wills by me heretofore made, ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my Last Will and testament, In testimony whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty-fifth day of May 1809. Nathaniel Craufurd SEAL Signed Sealed published and declared by Nathaniel Craufurd the testator to be his Last Will and testament in our presence who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto CODICIL TO WILL OF NATHANIEL CRAUFURD August 2nd 1809 Whereas I Nathaniel Craufurd of Prince Georges County have made and duly executed my Last Will and Testatment bearing the date the twenty fifith day of May in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and nine every clause, bequest and devise whereof I do hereby ratify and confirm except such parts thereof as may be herein after changed or altered and being desirous of making some alterations thereof and additions thereto, do hereby make and ordain this Codicil thereto, which I request may be deemed and taken a part of my said Last Will and Testament in manner and form following, whereas I did by my said Last Will and Testament will and direct that all my estate both real and personal should be kept in the hands of my Executors for the payment of my debts and Support of my family and education of my Children until my Son Thomas B. Craufurd should arrive at the age of twenty two years and did also in and by my said Will direct that on his, the said Thomas B. Craufurds arrival at the age of twenty two years, a division of my Estate both real and personal should take place agreeably to the provisions and devises in my said will contained and being desirous to prolong the time of keeping my estate in the hands of my executors for the purposes aforesaid, I do hereby will and direct that all my Estate both real and personal shall be kept together by my Executors in my said will named except what is therein Devised to my son Nathaniel Craufurd on his arriving at the age of twenty one years, untill my son Thomas B. Craufurd arrives to the age of twenty five years, instead of twenty two years , as directed in my said will to which this is intended as a Codicil, during which period all the Crops made on my different plantations and other profits thence arising as also the crop or crops on hand at the time of my decease shall be applied to the payment of my Just debts except what may be necessary for the Support of my family and education of my Children, and in event of my debts not being fully discharged within the period above mentioned I do hereby will and direct that the balance then due shall be paid by my Several Legatees in equal proportions agreeably to the amount or value of their respective Legacies. ITEM. I do hereby will and direct that all the Legacies given in my said will to take affect of my son Thomas B. Craufurds arrival at the age of twenty two years, shall take affect and commence from and after his the said Thomas B. Craufurds arriving at the age of twenty five years, as aforesaid except the two Legacies to my two sons Bushrod Washington Craufurd and David Craufurd which shall be paid to them as they severally and respectively arrive to the age of twenty five years. ITEM. I give and bequeath unto my wife Sarah B. Craufure on my son Thomas B. Craufurds arriving at the age of twenty five years a negro man named Andrew not mentioned in my will herein before referred to during her Single Life or Widowhood and no Longer, provided she should marry again, but in case my said wife should not marry again, then and in that case, I give and bequeath the said negro Andrew unto my said wife to dispose of in such manner as she may think proper. ITEM: I do hereby Authorize and empower my Executors in my will heretofore named to sell and dispose of my three negros Harry, Peter and little Isaac, at such time and upon such terms as they may think proper and to apply the money thence arrising to the discharge of my debts or support of my family and education of my Children. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this second day of August in the year of Our Lord Eighteen hundred and nine. Soper and made oath on the Holy Evangely of Altmighty God that they did see Nathaniel Craufurd the Testator herein named, Sign and Seal this instrument of writing as a codicil to his Last will and Testament, that at the time of his doing so he was, to the best of their apprehension, of Sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding and that they together with Eleazor Talburt the other subscribing witness respectively subscribed their names as witnesses thereto, in the presence of the testator at his request and in the presence of Each other.
