All Rights Reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/md/mdfiles.htm ********************************************************* Document of Manumission: Pollodore and Martha Downes, Queen Anns County, Maryland, 1796 State of Maryland Queen Anns County, ___ Be it remembered that I Martha Downes of the county and state aforesaid, for divine good reasons and me thereunto moving do manumit and from bondage discharge my negro man called Pollodore, who being a slave was devised unto me as a legacy by my late Grandfather Solomon Wright deceased - and I do hereby declare the said Polladore to be fully and absolutely liberated and discharged from bondage forever - and I do utterly disclaim all right of contract or interest in any and every kind of labor or service of the said Polladore from the day of the date hereof - And in testimony thereof I have set my hand and affixed my seal hereunto this fifth day of February, one thousand seven hundred and ninety six. Martha Downes Witnesses present: Jona Bready, John Jones February the fifth in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety six appeared before me one of the Justices of the Peace for Queen Anns County & state of Maryland the above named Martha Downes, and did acknowledge and declare the above deed of manumition and instrument of working to be her act and deed; and the negro man Pollodore therein mentioned to be fully and absolutely liberated and discharged from bondage forever, according to the ___intent and meaning thereof.
