Know Ye that I James Slaughter of Queen Anne's County in the Provence [sic] of Maryland being sick and week [sic] of Body, but of sound Mind and Memory thank be to god for the same and calling to mind the Mortality of my Body and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say, I recommend my soul to Almight God that gave it me trusting in the merits and meditation of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for the remission of all my sins; my Body to the Grave to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner, and as for such wordly Goods as it hath pleased God to bestow on me, I give and dispose of as followeth--It is my will that all my just debts be duly paid for which I leave two hundred acres of my land to be sold by my executrix to be laid off at the upper end of my land next to Joseph Councels. Item, I give to my Dear and Loving Wife all my Estate Real and Personal during her Natural Life, and after her death divided between four of my sons, viz. Edward, John, Jonathan and Nathan, in manner following, Edward to hold and enjoy the place whereon he now lives, with his part adjoying [?] to him and his heirs forever. My son John, to hold the place whereon he now lives with his part ajoying[?] to him and his heirs forever. My son Jonathan the place I bought of William Tim with his part ajoying to him and his heirs forever. My son Nathan to hold and enjoy the plantation where on I now live with his part ajoying to him and his heirs forever. Item. I give to my son Jonathan after his mother's decease, a Negro boy named Will. Item, I give to Nathan a Negro wench named Dafney. Item, I give to my Daughter Sarah Emery a Negro Girl named Judey. Item, I give to my son James one shilling sterling. Item, I give to my son Solomon one shilling sterling. Item, I give to my son Stephen one shilling sterling, Item, I give to my Daughter Elizabeth Criper one shilling sterling which four shillings I desire my be paid them by my executrix after my decease as their full part. It is my will and desire that all the rest of my Estate should be equally divided between five of my Children viz. Edward, John, Jonathan, Nathan and Sarah Emery. Lastly, I hereby appoint my Wife Elizabeth Slaughter whole and sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament revoking and Disannulling all other Wills by me made any time heretofore. In witness which I have here unto set my hand and seal this fourth day of March Anno Dom. 1765. James X Slaughter [seal] Signed, sealed and delivered in presence of William Keene Jeremiah Jadein Jeremiah X Montague Queen Anne County the 28th Day of August 1766 William Keene and Jeremiah Montague, two of the subscribing Witnesses to the written will being duly and solemnly sworn on the Holy Evangella of Almighty God, do depose and say, that they saw the testator James Slaughter sign the same Will, and heard him publish and declare it to be his last will and testament, that at the time of his so doing He was to the best of their apprehension of sound and disposing mind and memory and that they subscribed their respective names as witnesses thereto in the presence of the said Testator and at his Request and further that they saw Jeremiah Jadwin subscribe his name as a witness to the same Will in the presence of the said Testator and at his request, which depositions afr. swore taken in the presence of James Slaughter Eldest son and Heir at law to the Testator which same James Slaughter did not object to the probate of the said Will. Before W. Wright deputy commissioner of Queen Anne's County, Queen Anne's County. I hereby certifie that on the 28th day of August 1766, Elizabeth Slaughter widow & executrix of James Slaughter deceased, made her election to stand to and abide by the last Will & Testament of her said Deceased Husband.
