Most of the surnames researched are associated with this family either by marriage or land ownership. Other surnames are recorded because of the listing of heirs if the ancestor died intestate. John Hamilton Bell, Hamilton Bell and Archibald Hamilton Beall (sic) of Somerset County Petition of John Hamilton Bell, Hamilton Bell and Archibald Hamilton Beall of Somerset County showeth that Elizabeth Hamilton 15 October 1774 obtained a special warrant to resurvey “Chance”, originally 23 November 1742 granted Robert Geddis for 29 acres “Cypress Swamp”, originally 7 October 1747 granted him for 15 acres and “Little Derry”, originally 27 December 1750 granted John Hamilton for 176 acres. Resurvey made, certificate issued in name “Addition to Little Deary” (sic), containing 343 ½ acres. Elizabeth Hamilton died, intestate, since 9 Janaury 1788, leaving the petitioners and William Bell, her only children and heirs-at-law. William died intestate, leaving no heirs and Hamilton Bell is also dead. Patent issued January 8, 1805. MDLW&P, 1801-1808, FHC Film 0013131, page 334. Thomas Brown of Somerset County Tract of land called “South Betherton”, land granted to William Thorne, 300 acres. William Thorne left land to wife, Winifred, who intermarried with David Brown, who by deed, made land over to John Brown. MD LW&P, FHC Film 0013089, 1739-1743, page 165 Levin Irving and George and Sarah Gillis of Somerset County A survey made for Joseph Gillis of Somerset County, a tract of land 95 ¼ acres by name of Chance”. Said Joseph Gillis died, intestate, and land was devised to his children. The tract of land divided fell into lots awarded to George Gillis, Sarah Gillis and Thomas Gillis, but in unequal portions. That a writ of “fieri facias” was issued out of the Eastern Shore General Court and levied on the lands of Thomas Handy Gillis aforesaid and the Sheriff of Somerset County advertised and sold at Public Auction the said land and petitioner (Levin Irving) had Sheriff’s conveyance to him dated 4 August 1798. Samuel Phobus and John Phobus of Somerset County Petitioned that George Phobus, the petitioner’s father, had on the 4 December 1694, a tract of land :Littleworth” granted for 200 acres with yearly rent of 8 shillings sterling.
