On 1 Oct 1770, he "did this day take and subscribe the usual Qualifications" at "Messieurs Willing and Morris's Store" in Philadelphia. ("Pennsylvania German Pioneers" by Strassburger). Christian Wiest of Lancaster Co, Pa wrote his will on 21 May 1814 (probated 24 Feb 1815 and recorded in Will Book L, Vol 1, page 422). He had sons John, Jacob, Benjamin, Daniel, Christian and Samuel, one of whom was a minor in 1814 and one of whom, John, was blind. Buried in Lancaster Co on 21 Nov 1799, is Johann Jacob Wust (Wiest), who was born 26 Aug 1733 in Dierbach, Pfarramt Barbelroth, canton Bergzabern, Saarpfalz (formerly Alsace). There are 1799 and 1801 baptisms for children of Jacob and Eva Wiest in the Abbottstown Reformed Church in Adams Co, Pa: Daniel born 14 Aug 1799 and Catharine born 20 Dec 1800. The 1779 tax list of Paradise Township, York Co, includes a Christian Wiest with 150 acres, 4 horses, 3 cattle and John Wiest with 150 acres, 3 horses, 4 cattle. For some reason, Franklin Co will records include a will for Christian Wiest of Paradise Township, York Co. This will was written 8 Apr 1830 and probated in Franklin Co 5 Dec 1842. He named a son Jacob and daughters Anna Mary wife of Henry Appleman, Barbara (deceased) wife of John Bentzel, and Elisabeth wife of Samuel Hoke. He named as executors his "trusty friends" Michael Wiest and John Wiest. There are conflicting Franklin Co cemetery records for Christian Wiest: (1) 11 Oct 1714 - 18 Aug 1812 aged 97 yrs 10 mos 7 dys; and (2) 11 Oct 1744 - 18 Aug 1842. The second set of dates may well be correct, particularly if this is one and the same as Christian Wiest of York Co whose will was probated in Dec 1842. There is also a Franklin Co cemetery listing for Jacob, son of Christian Wiest 8 Jul 1770 - 19 Dec 1855, aged 85 yrs 5 mos 11 dys. Jacob is a name that was handed down through several generations. Perhaps the earliest of these is (1) Jacob Wiest born about 1760. Susan, widow of Jacob Wiest Sr., died in Frederick Co, MD on 22 Nov 1843 at age 81; this places her birthdate at about 1762 as well, presumbly, as her husband Jacob. (EDR, p. 225). The next Jacob would be (2) Jacob Wiest, son of Jacob, who died in Frederick County on 5 Jul 1847 at age 59; this places his birthdate at approximately 1788. (EDR, p. 225). The next Jacob would be (3) Jacob Wiest, son of Jacob, who died 5 Oct 1832 at age 14; this places his birthdate at approximately 1818. (EDR, p. 223). Thus, we would have: Jacob Wiest Sr. born c. 1762 Jacob Wiest Jr. born c. 1788 Jacob Wiest III born c. 1818 Jacob Wiest Sr. may well have been a brother of Leonard Wiest born 1764. Leonard Wiest was born 31 Dec 1764 and lived at least part of his life in Washington Co, Md although Md census records show sporadic listings -- did he sometimes live in Pa? He attended Jacobs Lutheran Church located between Waynesboro, Franklin Co, Pa and Leitersburg, Washington Co, Md. where he is listed as Leonhart Wiest. There is only one 1790 Md census record for Weast/Wiest: Henary Weast lived in Baltimore Co with 4 Males over 16, 3 Males under 16, and 2 Females. One of the older males might have been Leonard. Leonard's wife, Elisabeth, was born 20 Feb 1770 and died 28 Apr 1838. On 16 Dec 1792, a daughter Anna Barbara was born to Leonard and Elisabeth. Anna was baptised at Jacobs on 21 Apr 1793, and the baptism was sponsored by Anna Barbara Emsfiehl, wife of George Emzfiehl. Could Anna and George Emzfiehl be Elisabeth's parents? Leonard died 13 Nov 1828 in Washington Co and left a will naming his wife and 7 children, one of whom was Henry Weast. A family Bible kept by Henry refers to Leonard as "the father of 12 children". Children other than Henry named in Leonard's will were Joseph, Conrad, Polly wife of Michael Brantner, Elisabeth wife of Jacob D__tro, Sarah wife of David Bealer, and Sophia. Washington Co census and cemetery records include: James Weast born 1781-90, Matthew Weast born 1791-1800, Joseph Weast born 24 Jan 1794, Conrad Weast born 15 Jan 1795, and Christian Weast born 1801-10. >From the foregoing records, Leonard's children include: Anna Barbara 16 Dec 1792 Joseph 24 Jan 1794 Conrad 15 Jan 1795 Henry 19 Apr 1797 Mary/Polly, wife of Michael Brantner Elisabeth, wife of Jacob D__tro Sarah, wife of David Bealer Sophia also possibly: James 1781 - 1790 Matthew 1791 - 1800 Christian 1801 - 1810 and one unknown. Henry Weast 19 Apr 1797 - 7 Dec 1880 lived in Washington Co all or most of his life. He married Susannah Huffer 28 Aug 1802 - 2 December 1832, daughter of John Huffer and Magdalene Rohrer. The marriage license was issued to Rev. Keedy on 24 Jun 1822. Susannah died 2 1/2 mos after giving birth to their daughter Susannah and was buried in the Shang Graveyard, Boonsboro, Md. Henry remarried and was buried with his second wife in the Boonsboro Cemetery. Henry's 17 Nov 1880 will names his wife Lucinda, daughter Ruann deceased, son George, daughter and son-in-law Susan and Andrew Danner, and grandchildren - Lucinda wife of Charles A. Gabe, Arbelia Coissing, Mary Ellen Loudenslager. Susanna Weast was born 27 Sep 1832 and married Andrew Danner 6 Nov 1856 in Frederick Co, Md. The marriage license lists her maiden name as Susan Ann Wiest. Her death certificate lists her as Susanna Danner, daughter of Henry Weast and Miss Huffer. Hagerstown's newspaper "The Mail" records that she died 7 Jul 1910, was the wife of Andrew Danner, and was survived by a daughter Mrs. Elizabeth Linn and others. Other Weasts who were early residents of western Maryland, according to Scharf's "History of Western Maryland," include the following: John Weast, shoemaker, was an early resident of Boonsboro (p. 1263). Jacob Weast married Eve Saline in Frederick Co on 26 August 1780 (p. 428). John Weast married Lydia Shuck in Frederick Co on 6 April 1801 (p. 429). Jacob Weist Sr. 17 July 1788 - 5 July 1847 is buried in the German Reformed Church graveyard in Frederick Co.
