Snow about 6 in deep. Sky clear and sun warm. Went to S. School in the morning & evening. Gave W. Albert, T. Wollet, S. J. White and Albert Lewis a book a piece. Went out with tracts and distributed 30 and got the promis of 1 or 2 boys to come to S. S. Took super with James. Went to Dr. Fuller’s Church. 2 Ladies Baptized. Monday, January 2 Very cold and freezing all day and good slaying. Went to work for Bro. James and uncle made a full day and getting $2.00 per day. At night I called on G. Watterson and him and I went to Dr. Fuller’s Church at a Church Extention Meeting and gave my name for 5.00 to become a member. Tuesday, January 3 Snow on the ground and cold but a very prety day. Worked all day on inside work. Received a letter from Sister Eliza from Harford Co. Went to Prayer meeting and gave in my experence and enjoyed the privilige very much. Came home red the paper and went to bed. Wednesday, January 4 Snow on the ground sun came out prety warm and melted the snow nearley all away by night. Worked all day on inside work. After supper went to the Encampment. Came home read the paper and then Jasey rubed my side with Whiskey then went to bed. Thursday, January 5 Clear and moderate but very mudy. Worked all day on inside work. After supper went to the Lodge. Left a Prop for Josiah Bowen and then went to a lectture delivered to the Young Mens Christian Association, Subject A Christian Statesman. Came home and wrote a letter to a friend in N. York. Friday, January 6 Spring wether. Worked all day on inside work. After supper got shaved and my hare cut and then went to see uncle James & saw there Bro. Jas. & Mr. Heald Congratulated Cousin Virginia. Stayed about an half Hour and then came home. Red the 10th cha. Proverbs. Went bedd. Saturday, January 7 Cold freezing all day. Worked all day on inside work. Made a full week and got $12.00. After Supper I called for my Watch but it was not don. Then I went to Aunt Mary’s after my close. Called by Andy’s on my way home red the Paper and was very ankious to go to California. Sunday, January 8 Clear and cold. Received a notice while Eating my Breakfast to attend a funerel Patriarch Gray.Went to S. School. Went from there to Church-Text Lamentation 3 part 26v. Went to the Encampment and went on with them to the Funerel. Saw Bro. Jacob on the road. Came home and went to Church. Dr. Fuller’s text, Oh, Lord revive thy work. 4 Ladies baptized. Monday, January 9 Very Coald. Uncle sent for me to do a job out by Fairmount. Went out and commenced it made ¾ of a day. Engaged cousin Ann to make me 4 shirts to take with me to California. I stade in after supper and regulated my S. School Class Book and time Book and spent a very pleasant evening with Miss Sarah Slicer & Mr. Richardson & Mrs. Slicer. Tuesday, January 10 Very pleasant day. Worked all day out by Fairmount. After supper went to the City Mission Society being the Ellection nite we ellected our Officers for the ensuing year. Bro. Shultz Pre. Bro. Schott Sec. Bro. Jones Tresure a very good selection. Oh father help us all to be more usefull this year than we were last year. Wednesday, January 11 Raining off and on all day and at night. Worked all day and finished the job at Fairmount. Staid in the house after supper and red the paper. C. Slicer gave me an invitation to a party to come off tomorrow night at Mrs. Frazier’s & consented to go. Felt very unworthy all day on account of my short comings in duty to my God. Thursday, January 12 Raining all day. Worked ¾ on inside work. After supper got ready and went to the Party in company with Bowen and R Fraisure. Enjoyed my self very well. Came home with Miss Stown(?). Befor I went I red part of the 3rd Ch. Of Prov. and I tried not to forget what I had red. Father forgive me all that I don rong. Friday, January 13 Very pleasant day. Worked in the morning in the Shugar house. In the afternoon don a job for Mr. Giles. Made a hould day. After supper went to Prayer Meeting. The commencement of a series of meetings great many present good meeting. Went home with James staid about an hour then came home. Saturday, January 14 Quite cold and freezing all day. Went to the Building but did not go to work. In the afternoon Sister Annie and I went to see Mrs. Scholley, the Largest Woman in the World Weighs 764 and Mrs. Briggs only 30 inches high and the Swiss Warbler. In the evening went to Prayer Meeting at our Church good meeting. Sunday, January 15 Quite pleasant not two cold. Went to Sunday School in the mourning & evening. Mr. Grimsley Preached in the mourning and evening. Text in the mourning 2 Corinthians 14-15v. Evening Rev. 1 11v. Dr. Fuller went to Washington to Dedicate a Baptist Church. Took Diner with James felt very unworthy all day. My Father help me to live nearer to the. Monday, January 16 Quite warm and pleasant all day. In the morning went to Shugar House to work but did not do anything all day. Got my watch from Mr. Holaday. Paid him $2.00 for cleaning it. Wrote a letter to Eliza in Harford Co. and one to Hale in Kent Island. Evening went to meeting at our Church. Bro. Grimsley Preached had a very good meeting but I felt very unworthy. Came home sat a while. Tuesday, January 17 Cloudy and rain all day did not do anything all day. Was with G. Watterson off and on all day. Received a letter from N. Y. from Mr. Jones. After supper went to meeting at my Church. Bro. G. preached and my Paster exorted all the members that were bold & wished to love more closer to God this year to kneal down. I knealt down. Wednesday, January 18 Cloudy and rain all day. Cald on Mr. Richardson at his store got waid 157 ½ then him and I we went up to the Court House. After supper went to meeting Bro. G. Preached had a good meeting then went up to James stade about an hour or so then came home. After reading a chapter in the Bible went to bed. Thursday, January 19 Cold all day. Worked ½ day. After supper went to the Lodge. Josiah Bowen was initiated. I acted as wright seen surporter. Bro. James, Davis Henderson & Watterson were there. I was put on the Committee of applicant R. Green. Came home sat a little while then talked with Sarah then went to bed. Friday, January 20 Very fine day. I worked ¾ of a day saw Jacob and Mary McComas. Got my watch chane that I left to get mended charged 25 cents for mending it. After supper got shaved and went to Church. Bro. Grimsley preached. 5 received for Baptism. Got my pants from Mr. Flederman promised to him next week $3.00. Saturday, January 21 In the morning very pleasant. Went to work at 9 o’clock made ¼ day. in the afternoon very windy took my pants back to Mr. Fledderman and exchanged for a higher price pare $6.00. Came home and sat in the house by the stove untill after supper then went up to Aunt Mary’s came home went to bed. Sunday, January 22 Very cold day in the morning. Went to Sunday School & in the evening had preaching in the evening at the school room. Went out with tracts distributed 30. After supper went to Church and weighted on Mr. Hunphreys to be Baptized five were Baptized. Came home and sat and talked a while and went to bed. Monday, January 23 Very cold all day. Don nothing all day. Made inquery in the case of applicant Bob Green to become a member of our Lodge. Staid in the house all day. After supper called up to Cousin Ann’s and took Eliza to Meeting. Bro. Grimsley & Dr. Fuller spoke. Took Eliza up to James stade there a while came home went bed. Tuesday, January 24 Very cold all day went to work at 9 o’clock made ¾ of day. After supper went to Prayer Meeting Bro. Grimsley Pr. Text Matt 11th 28-29 & 30 verses. Dr. Fuller then made a few remarks. Saw Uncle Gabriel this noon. Oh, My savior forgive me for all I have don rong this day. Wednesday, January 25 Very cold all day worked all day on inside work. After supper went to meeting. Bro. Grimsley Pre and Dr. Fuller spoke. Took up a collection for Bro. Grimsley. Some 5 or 6 Ladies knealt down to be prayed for. Came by Mr. Fledderman and got my pants. Came home sit a while then went to bed. Thursday, January 26 Last night it snowed inch or two deep. Rained today. Worked all day. After supper sent my report in of Mr. Green to the Lodge. Went to Pryaer Meeting Bro. Preached. Came home stopt in the Oddfellows Hall in the Library a few minutes on my way home. Red several chapts in the Bible then went to bed. Friday, January 27 Very fine day. Worked all day on inside work. Received a letter from Joseph Hale, after supper went to meeting Bro. Preached. Text Luke 9.24. 6 Ladies received for Baptism. Came home read the sun paper a while then read the 9th chapter of Luke then went to bed. Saturday, January 28 Very cold all day. Worked all day on inside work. After supper went to the Barbers and got shaved. Bought a cravat. Went up to Aunt Mary’s called by Cousin Ann’s on my way home all were well. Came home red a while then got ready and went to bed. Sunday, January 29 Very cold all day. Went to S. School. Came down to church with Miss Buckingham Bro Tirya Preached Text Acts 11.26. In the afternoon went to S. S. at half past 3 o’clock Bro. Crowley Preached Text (God is Love ) Went out with tracts with Bro. Brown and Kingdon dis. 37, got the promis of 7 children to come to S. S. Evening went to church with Mr. Gill, Dr. Fuller preached 6 were Baptized. Came home went bed. Monday, January 30 Very pleasant day. Worked all day. Watterson, Bowen and I concluded to go on the 20th of Feb. to California. After supper went to the Building Association paid for two weeks then went up to meeting Bro. Tirya preached. We had a good meeting. Oh my Savior may I never forget what I heard. Read a chapt then went to bed. Tuesday, January 31 Very pleasant day. Worked ½ day. Wrote a letter to Mr. Jones in N. Y. Exchanged my Watch chane for a Gold Kee & had a cristial put in my Watch. After supper went to meeting Bro. Tirya preached Text Prepare to meet thy God. Several knelt down to be praid for. Came home read awhile then went to bed. Wednesday, February 1 Very pleasant all day. Walked about all day. Went to see Mr. Burck did not see him. Called on Cousin Ann and Cousin Baker. After supper went to meeting Bro. Tirya Pre Text. The harvest is past the summer is ended and we are not saved. Jer 8.20 some 12 or 14 came forward to be praid for. Then came home red a while then went to bed. Thursday, February 2 Very mild day. Started to Kent Island 7 o’clock in the morning in the Harry Jinkins Capt. Tilghman arrived there ½ past 9 in the morning. Saw Mr. Hemp(?) and family at warfe. Had some dificulty finding where Mr. Hale was. Could not find him stopt at Mr. J. C. Tolson place where Hale boarded got an interduction to Miss Das---, Miss Ringgold & Miss Devawl(?) Friday, February 3 Very sudden change in the weather quite a snow storm last night & this morning snow about 2 in deep very cold windy. At Mr. Tolson’s very much pleased with his Family. Went down to Mr. Tolson’s store to try to here from Mr. Hale did not here from him. Had a very sore throat. Mrs. Tolson made me some tea to drink went to bed. Saturday, February 4 Very cold and windy stade in the House most all day could not here anything from Mr. Hale. After supper shaved myself and Mr. Tolson got me some Goosegrees to rub my throat with. Mr. And Mrs. Tolson was very kind to me went to bed. Sunday, February 5 Not quite so cold. My throat felt much better. Mr. Tolson received a letter from Hale stateing that he would not be on the Island before Tuesday morning next. Went to meeting with Mr. Tolson. Hered a good sermin Text St. John 15.5. Saw Mr. Kemp there Monday, February 6 Very cold and windy. Started for Baltimore had a very pleasant time on the water all day with Mr. Kemp. Had an interductioin to Miss Harison. Got home about ½ past 6 o’clocl. After supper went to Meeting Bro. Tirya pre had a very good meeting 5 or 6 came up to be prayed for came home. Tuesday, February 7 Cold but pleasant. Walked out to Jacob’s found them all well in the afternoon went to see Martha took tea with her. Came back and went to singing school with Jacob. Saw Mr. Thompson(?), Gatch and Abeal there then went home talked a while and then went to bed Wednesday, February 8 Snow and raining. Talked about going to California. In the evening Jacob brought to Town. Brought a pare of fine Boots in Frount St. $4.00. After supper went to the Encamppment drue my Traviling Card. Went up to meeting went up to James then came home. Thursday, February 9 Very mild day. In the morning bought some stuf to make a pare of overalls & P. draws. Got a check from Davis & McDonald for $425.00. came home saw Mr. Burck had quite a dispute about 2 Fronts that I put up for him. He was not willing to give me what he first agread to give by $10. Went to the Lodge got my card. Saw Mrs. and Mr. Cockey today and Mr. Williams. Friday, February 10 Very pleasant day. Mr. Mills and J. Hale called to see me from Kent Island. Bro. Jacob called also on business. Gave me his note for $70.00 on demand. Drawed $425 from Bank. Had 3 likenesses taken 1 for $1.50 & 2 for 50 cents each. Gave 1 to cousin Susan Baker. Bought 2 Carpet Baggs for $2.25. Went to meeting. Bro. Tirya pre Text 1 Col. 9.24. 10 received for Baptism. Saturday, February 11 Quite a pleasant day. I has 3 more likenesses taken 2 for 37 ½ cents 1 for 50 cents. Made 4 or 5 calls today making arraingements all day to go to California. Lent James $100 on Intrust. Took dinner with Rebecca Knobloch. Brought home some Oranges for the Girls to night. Sunday, February 12 Very pleasant day. Went to S. School. Miss A. Ross gave me a very prety Book. Went to our Church Mr. Tirya Pr and Dr. Fuller spoke. Went to Mr. Wheeler’s with Jacob and took dinner. Went to Communion. Called on Mrs. Armor Took tea with James went to our church with Rebecca & Ann Cunningham 10 were Baptized. The 2 Miss Cockeys gave me a present a piece. Monday, February 13 Cloudy wet day. Started for New York in company of Watterson & Bowen. Got as far as South Amboy. At 5 o’clock took the stemer John Potter and went 4 miles and on account of the fog we had to lay too all night we had a very pleasant time. The company on board was very quiet we all had to sleep on the floor. No acidnet ocured. Tuesday, February 14 Stoped with Mrs. Burd in 13th St. Very foggy and raining a little. Oing to the fog we onley got as far as Elizabeth Town in the stemer. We then took the cars & came a mile or two then stopt at a little Town and there got something to eat for 25 Hours came to N. York went to the Stemeboat Office procured our Tickets for California for $180 through. Boarded at Mrs. Burd’s. Wednesday, February 15 Very foggy and wet all day. Went to see after our Baggage had not come yet. Stoped in the Trinity Church on our way home. Went to see Mr. Cockey saw Sousin and Mrs. Cockey. After supper went to see George Thompson and Mr. Bebb. Saw them at his shop. Received a letter from Mr. Minor for Mr. Armor to take to California. Thursday, February 16 Snow about 2 in deep and very bad under foot. Went after our Baggage and got it. G. Levering came to see me. Wrote 2 letters Home 1 to Jacob and 1 to James. Stade in the House most all day. After supper bought 4 pare of stockings. Bought a chisel & small trowel to take with me to California. Went to bed. Friday, February 17 Very cold some snow on the ground. Stayed in the House untill dinnertime then Bowen, Watterson, Lewis and I took a walk around by the Christial Palace and the Blind Assilum came home. After supper I went to meeting in 16th St. Baptist Church Saturday, February 18 Very cold in the morning but got warmer toward evening. Took a walk in the morning with Watterson, Bowen had my likeness taken gave 75 cents for it. Gave it to Mrs. Burd. In the afternoon I went on board our ship that we go to California in. After supper went to see Mr. Cockey & Family came home went to bed. Sunday, February 19 Very pleasant day. Went to Church in the morning with Watterson & Bowen at Mr. Taggert’s at 16th St. Baptist Church Text Judges 16th part of 20th verse. In the afternoon went to S. School and Church in the same place. After supper went to Bedford St. Church with Mr. and Mrs. Burd and Sister, Mr. Waterson & Lane. Heard a good sermon [--] Mr. McGowen Monday, February 20 Very cold snowed some called on Mr. Cockey and Mr. Woolf and bade them goodby. Started for California in the George Law at 2 o’clock. Mr. & Mrs. Burd & Mr. Lane went to the Boat to see me off. Miss Susan gave me a present Thread and Needles etc. Mr. Watterson & Mr. Bowen Went in company with us. Snowing very hard when we left. Anchord at ½ past 3 o’clock N. York. Tuesday, February 21 On account of the gale we were compeled to lay two last Night and did not start untill about 11 o’clock when we started. Got out sea about 1 o’clock. Today sea very rough Bowen and Watterson sick most all day as well as myself. Most all on board were sea sick about 1150 pas on board. Wednesday, February 22 Out at sea good wether but rough. At 11 o’clock we passed the Wreck of the E. L. Buel(?) disbandoned. Saw a great many Barrels afloat about at Hour 12 oçlock we pased another the D.C. Oakes [--] with Whrum & shugar and 5 men on Board Haild from Bangor Bound to N. Y. from Sandy cruse(?) took all on board our Boat good many [--] Lat. 37 North, Long 74.20 West 230 miles from NY when we met with them. Thursday, February 23 Lat. 33.33 North at 12 o’clock long. 74 west. Distance the last 24 Hours 208 miles. Weather quite mild but very windy did not sleap well last night on account of sea sickness feel better this evening. Friday, February 24 Long 30.0 at 12 o’clock. Long 73.10 west. Distance made the last 24 hours 216 miles. Distance from New York 654 miles. Very pleasant on water last night and today. Weather very mild. Very few sea sick on board. Saw several vessels in sight. Saturday, February 25 Lat 26.0 North at 12 o’clock. Long 73.2 West. Distance made the last 24 Hours 240 miles. Distance from New York 894 miles. Very Windy all day and tonight. Saw 1 or 2 vessels in sight today. Getting quite warm. Sunday, February 26 Lat. 22.42 North at 12 o’clock. Long. 72.3 West.Distance made the last 24 Hours 200 miles. Distance from N. York 1094 miles. At 11 o’clock we have in sight the Laguan(?) Island laying east of us. Had a very pleasant day weather very warm. Monday, February 27 Lat. 19.9 North at 12 o’clock. Long. 74.40 West. ( Caribbean Sea ) Distance made the last 24 Hours 240 miles. Distance from N. York 1324 miles. This morning we pased through between the Cuba and Hayti Islands. In the Evening we pased Bird Island. At ½ past 6 we were in sight of the island of Jamaca. Tuesday, February 28 Lat. 15.50 north at 12 o’clock. Lomg. 72.36 West ( Caribbean Sea ) Distance made the last 24 Hours 238 miles. Distance from N. Y. 1562 miles. Very pleasant last night and today on water. I had the tooth ach very bad today. Spent the day very well Reading and siting about the deck all day. Wednesday, March 1 Lat. 12.30 North at 12 o’clock. Long. 78.40 West. ( Caribbean Sea ) Distance made the last 24 Hours 234 miles. Distance from N. York 1796 miles. Very pleasant last night and today on water. Expect to arrive in Astinwall tomorrow morning at 9 o’clock. New York to Aspinwall 1980 miles. Thursday, March 2 Arrived in Aspinwall at 10 o’clock. 2 o’clock we took the cars and went to Obispo arrived there about 4 o’clock then we took the Mules for Panama. Arrived in Panama at 12 o’clock at night. Had a very bad road to come over. Stopped at the Louisiana Hotell charged for room $3 per day. Bowen, Watterson, Welsh and I room together. Friday, March 3 In Panama very warm slept very bad last night on account of being very tired from wricteing across the Isthmus. Walk a good deal about the Town and suburbs saw a great deal of trees growing. Saw the Stemeboat California come in today. Saw them [--] pasengers. Had out Tickets Rechered in the Office. Saturday, March 4 At Panama stoping at the same place very warm all day. After Breakfast went after our Baggage got part of mine. We concluded to wait untill the John L. Stevings came in expected on the 13th of this month. Had a good offer for ticket to exchange. Went to Church at night. Sunday, March 5 At Panama stoping at the Louisiana Hotell very warm all day. The Stemer California started this morning. Took 3 checks from Mr. Trubody and promised him to bring his Baggage on with me to California. He went on today. At 11 [--] went to Preaching Mr. Z. Rowell Text Heb. 2.9. Evening went to same place. Text Luke 2.42 very good sermon. Monday, March 6 The Steme ship company agread to pay our Board. They sent about 25 of us to Tabago Island. We arrived there in the evening. Stoped at the Pavilion House. We were very much pleased with the place. Tabago Island about 12 miles from Panama. Left Pa. About 3 o’clock Brought some things for Mr. Trubody [--] [--]. Tuesday, March 7 In Tabago about 12 miles from Panama. Boarding at the Pavilion Hotell. Very pretty day but very warm we took a walk through the Town this morning before Breakfast. Saw a great many strange things, felt a little fraid of the People. Spent the day walking about and reading. Thought a great deal about home. Wednesday, March 8 In Tabago. N. G. Prety day but very warm. 7 or 8 of us took a baith in the Bay Early this morning. 12 of us gave 50 cents a piece to buy Madury Wine for Dinner. We walked along the Beach and found some shells. Pased the day very well in reading and walking about. Thought a great deal about home. Thursday, March 9 Very prety day and very warm. Still in Tabago. Gave 3 pieces of clothing to be washed. In the afternoon we took a walk to see the berying ground. Miss C. Hayes came to our hotell today. Spent the day very well walking about and reading but very ankious to get to California but dont expect to get off for 10 or 12 days as yet. Friday, March 10 In Tabago N. G. Very butiful weather. Read several chapters in the New testament before Breakfast. Talked with Mr. Chittenden on baptism. He understood Greak and read his Greak testament. Took a long walk and saw pineapples growing found some shells. Spent the day very pleasently. Saturday, March 11 In Tabago N. G. The weather very warm. The wash woman charged me 60 cents for washing 3 large pieces and 3 collars. I find the Natives speak Spanish. They seem to be a very honest set of people. They live in Huts and subsist prinsipaly on Fruits and Nuts that grow spontanious. Spent the day reading a book that Mr. Chittenden lent me. Sunday, March 12 On the Island of Tabago a very pleasant day. Mr. Chittenden a Cong. and Mr. Jas. Clark a Methodist went out on the Sea Shore and had a little prayer meeting. Mr. C. read a chapter. Mark chapter 9. Each one of us Prayed in turn. Distributed tract about the little town. Mr. C. and I went to the Catholic Church. Spent the day very agreable and I hope long to be remembered. Monday, March 13 Tabago Island N. Granada. We all expected the John P. Stevens here today but she did not come. Spent a good part of the day reading in the New Testament & 2 other Books that were lent to me. After supper 4 of us went up on the Mountain. Spent the day very well but are very ankious to get on my jerney to California. Tuesday, March 14 In Tabago New Grenada. The weather has been very pleasant tho warm yet not so changeable as it is at home. We were all looking all day for the J. P. Stevens she being due here yesterday. She came in about 8 this evening and fired a gun as she came by the Island. We gave here 3 cheres. She stopped at Panama first then came here the same night. Wednesday, March 15 Still on the Island of Tabago. We were all very glad this morning to see the John P. Stevens had come down. She were putting on her Coal and Water all day. Sat about the House and read most all day. One of our men had a Chigoe(?) taken out of his foot today. They are very plenty here. Thursday, March 16 Tabago Island. Excellent weather after Breakfast. Took a walk along the shore tide very low. Tide raises and falls about 10 feet. In the evening took a walk to the Prison found 4 confined there. 1 in the stocks had been there 4 days. Did not know when he would get out. I gave him a tract. Friday, March 17 Tabago Island, N. G. Mr. Munrow the P. M. S. G. Company Agent came down this morning and gave our tickets for the J. T. Stevens. We had to pay $2 apiece port fees at Panama 14 to Aus. 1$ to the government. 5 or 6 of us went to Batheing in the fresh Water stream and we washed some of our clothes. News came this evening that we must go aboard tomorrow after breakfast. Saturday, March 18 Oing to some detention on the part of the Stemer coming down from New York and some repairing on the Stephens we can not go aboard untill tomorrow morning. Mr. & Mrs. Bateman & daughters, Miss C. Hayse, and Cap. M. S. Johnson Offser Have been stopping [--] at this place on their way to California. Sunday, March 19 We all went a board the John T. Stephens at 9 this morning then went up to Panama. Took on pasengers all day about 1000 pasengers came aboard. One man fell over Board got out but lost good many things. At 9 0’clock we started on our way to California Monday, March 20 Pasific Ocean. At 12 o’clock today we had come 160 miles from Panama. Lat. 7.10 North. Long. 80.54 West at 12 o’clock. We were in sight of land all day. Saw many islands on bouth sides of the Boat. The Isthmus land is very mountainous. We could see the clouds resting on 2 we pased. It has been very warm today. I find the streets in this place very dirty. Walked about a great deal today. Find it very dull here now dont expect to get to work for a month or two. Took supper with Mr. Armor at his ranch then him and I took a walk through some of the Gambling Houses. Friday, April 7 The wether is very pleasant. Every day seams alike. Not so changeable as it is at home. Walked about all day. Called to see Mr. Trubody saw his son and a young Lady. Wrote a letter to T. Levering in N. Y. Prospect of getting to work very dull for 6 or 7 weeks. Home sick all day. Saturday, April 8 Called to see Bro. Armor in the morning he was unwell. Walked about in the morning saw Jas. Hale and he told me that Mr. Burch had promised me a job. Took dinner at the ranch ( Mr. Armor’s ). Wrote 2 letters to Bro. Jas. A nd to Mr Burd. Thursday, April 13 Very pleasant day. Got up between 5 and 6 o’clock and made my breakfast on so bread . Wrote till almost 9 then walked out saw Walker and Jas. Hale. Read a chapter in the bible then went to bed. Saturday, April 15 Very pleasant day but warm. With Mr. Armor this forenoon. He was preparing his letters to send Home. 2 Stemers started for the Isthmus the Golden Gate and the Sierra Nevada. A steam boat bursted the boiler. Mrs. Hillman and child on board, child lost. She badly burned. 15 killed. Sunday, April 16 Pleasant day. Bought some bread last night and ate my meals in my room. Read till Church time then went to Bap. Church. Texxt Exodus 7.8-9. Half past 2 went to S. S. in a Bible Class. Came home read in the Life of C. Buchan to Mr. Chittenden. Went to church with Bro. Armor. Mr. Brierly preached morning & evening. Monday, April 17 Very pleasant day but a little dusty in the evening. Went to the Post Office, No letters for me. Asked for a job of Labouring work did not want any hands. With Bro. Armor an hour or 2 in the afternoon. In the evening was received in the First Baptist by a letter Commendation. Tuesday, April 18 The day very pleasant. Mr. Trubody promised me a job on his building when he started it. With Mr. Armor most of the day. Moved my Lodgeing place to Mr. Fuller’s in Montgomery St. Mr. Chittenden and I room together in a very good room for $20 per Month. Wednesday, April 19 The wether very pleasant. Was very much scared this morning when I got up with Mr. Chittenden my room mate thought he had the small pocks he is now better. Helped Bro. Armor 2 or 3 Hours this afternoon at some signs. Went to Prayer Meeting this evening the Rev. Mr. Shcuk was there had an interduction to him. Thursday, April 20 Cloudy and raining. Rained very hard last night. With Mr. Armor most of the day. The streets very mudy on account of the rain. The prospects of work very dull. Thought about going to the Oregon Mines with a company that is going on the 1 May. Visited the Yerba Buena Lodge this evening. Friday, April 21 The wether cloudy and raining part of the day. With Bro. Armor all day helped him to paint a sign & etc. The prospects are very unfaivourable to get work here at my traid think that I will go up to the Oregon Mines with a company that is going May 1. I. I. Went to a monthly meeting of the tract distributors was very much encoraged to engage in it with them. Thought it would be a good plan to go up to Oregon and take up 300 Acres Gov. Land. Tuesday, April 25 Very pleasant day. With Bro. Armor most all day. helped him with some signs at Mr. R. P. Bailey’s. Called to see Mr. Trubody and Fam. Took supper with them & spent the evening there. Did not know what course to take to get to doing something. Prayed God to guide me. Wednesday, April 26 Very pleasant weather. Mr. Nuguest promist to give me work and also Mr. Burch. God is very Kind to me to provide so well for not with standing all my unworthiness, may thy goodness manifest so bountifully upon me constrain me to love and surve the better. Thursday, April 27 The weather very pleasant. Got up this morning very much cast down on account of my sins. Oh, my Father help me to live nearer to the. Spent the day very pleasantly walking about and reading. Expect work in 4 or 5 days. This evening visited a Lodge with Bowen. Friday, April 28 Cloudy this morning and thretning rain about 9 commenced and rained all day. Prospects of work are very dull at this time but have the Prospects of work. Felt very much discouraged on account of work, but have some prospects of work in a week or so. With Bro. Armor most all day he has been very kind to me. This evening went to prayer meeting had a very good meeting about 30 present. We formed a young men’s prayer meeting in the church. I hope we may all benefit there by the Grace of God. Thursday, May 11 Very pleasant day. Walked out to the Mission with Bro. Armor. Came back and saw D. White and John Colison they were talking about going to the Mines. We all 3 agread to go & start tomorrow evening to the Northern Mines. Could not see but very little prospects of getting work here. This evening went to a Lodge. Friday, May 12 Began this morning to get ready to go to the mines. Start at 4 this afternoon for Marysville in company with D. White, John Colison all from Baltimore. May God be pleased to grant us success and permit us to return to this place in saifty. Saturday, May 13 Arrived at Sacramento this morning at 6 took the Stage for Marysville arrived here about 2 this afternoon. About 150 miles from San Francisco. The seenery all along the way was very buetifull. Most of the country between Marysville & Sacramento are level beutifull farming country. Saw a good many very prety farms also saw good many Cattle feeding, had no accident to happen us on the way. Sunday, May 14 Stopped last night at U. States Hotell. At 6 this morning we started for Foster’s Bar in the Stage. Most of the roads was very rough & very hilley too wood land. Arrived at Foster’s Bar about 5 very small town on Yuba River on a large stream of water. The gold mining is tolerable good. Stop tonight at a very good Publick House, gave the Ladie a few tracts. Rained some today. Monday, May 15 This morning left for Downeysville on the Yuba River about 25 or 30 miles distant came on mules. The road was very mountainous late snow on top of one of the mountains. Arrived in Downeysvoille about 4 o’clock then we walked about 4 miles further up the River to Frits Flatt in Sierra County. Tuesday, May 16 Sierra County, Cal. Very pleasant day. Stopping at a boarding house where severile Baltimoreans are boarding. One D. Baiken from Balto.T hey lent us some tools this morning and we started to prospect for gold walked about 3 or 4 miles up the river prospect all the way long but did not find a claim that we thought would pay us. John Colison found a small piece of quartz gold. Wednesday, May 17 The day very pleasant. I agread last night to work in the place of William Hunt an old miner while he went aprospecting with the other two. They came back about 2 sucsesful they found a prospect on Secret canion paing about 50 cents per pan. We then went up and got partley ready to go to work tomorrow morning in the claim. Thursday, May 18 Warm and very pleasant and snow 3 or 4 feet deep in sight of us on the Mountains. The country here is very mountainess. We commenced our claim and worked very hard all day. Found about 5 or 6 dollers in small pieces of gold and one piece [--] about $1.50 and 1 small specimen of quartz gold. Friday, May 19 No change in the wether. We worked all day in our claim and only maid about 3 or 4 dollars. Been thinking it would be best to go back and work at my traid. Had an offer this evening by a miner to take me in with him on a claim that he has up Jim Crow Canion about 4 miles up the river wants to commence next Monday. Saturday, May 20 Very pleasant day and plenty of snow still on the mountains. Worked all day in our claim and only maid about 4 dollars. We concluded in the evening to quit our claim and brought the tools home. We got $14.37½ out of the claim maiking $4.79 apiece. John Colison maid up his mind to go back to San Francisco. Sunday, May 21 A beutifull day. Enjoyed myself very well for a while reading a chapter in the New testament and in prayer allone by the river side. Then took a walk up the Jim Crow Canion about 4 miles to see a cliam that Jestton—had the refuseal of he wanted us to go in with him. We expect to know tomorrow if we can get them. Monday, May 22 Could not get those claims on Jim Crow Caion. We walked up to see them this morning & the man that they belonged to and he was not willing to do what he first agread to do. He agread to give them to T. H. Hill and he agread to take White and I in with him to work them. Came back and saw some claims for sale on the next flat above us Tuesday, May 23 T. Hill took those claims yesterday evening ( there were 5 of them )& he agread to pay for them when it came out of the canion. White & I have 2 for $129 and we agread to take them, but finding that it would cost us more money and a good deal of very hevey work and also very daingers work we thought it best not to have anything to do with it. We now expect to start back to Marysville tomorrow morning. Wednesday, May 24 A very pleasant day. Late yesterday evening a Mr. Martin was looking for a hand to work for him in his gold mines & I agread to go to work for him. He promised to give $4 per day & find my self. Work all day very hard breaking and carrying stones. Eat with my Boses. Thursday, May 25 The place where I am to work is on Secret Canion about ½ mile from the mouth. The country here is very mountainous and covered with large pine and cedar trees. Mining is very hard work as well as the liveing and sleaping. We live in a small logg cabin. The weather here is very pleasant. Friday, May 26 Went to work at mineing felt very sour and not very well pleased with this kind of work. I find the climate very pleasant and healthey here. The days are warm and the nites are cool. Today we had an eclipse of the sun it lasted from about 11 till ½ past 1 o’clock. Sun about half covered. Saturday, May 27 Worked all day. Expect this will be the last day that I will work if I can get work at my traid. Monday morning I expect to start to Marysville on foot with D. White to try to get work at Bricklaying. I will have about enough money to get us something to eat on the way. Sunday, May 28 Very pleasant day. After Breakfast as the men was about to start away to town to make there perchese and get there tools sharpened as usual in the mine on the Sabbath I gave then some tracts. I enjoyed my self very much this morning in reading a chapter and praying in the wood. Monday, May 29 Started this morning for Marysville in the company of D. White and carred our baggage with us. Walked to a little town in the mountains called Camptonsville about 23 miles from where we started. Stoped there all night with some bricklayers D. White was acquainted with. Slept on the floor. The seenery was very romantic on the way. We was very tired and sore when we stoped. Tuesday, May 30 After breakfast we started again on our way very warm walking in the morning. Comeing up the mountain after we pased Foster’s Bar we met 3 Indians & one Indian boy. They looked very suspicious and I was very fraid of them, we also pased several more on the way. But just before dark another very suspicious one pased and asked me for 2 Bits which was refused. Wednesday, May 31 Stoped last night at a Publick House about 20 miles from Camptonville and about 20 miles from Marysville. We walked about 6 miles then we rid the balance of the way on a wagon. The country is very romantic all the way through. We arrived in Marysville about 2 o’clock and I got work at my traid with Mr. Leverick and went to work at 3 o’clock same day. Thursday, June 1 Stoping at preasant at the Bee Hive Hotell paying $10 per week board. Went to work this morning and at 9 o’clock we had to quit on account of the rain. Went to work again after dinner made ¾ of a day. This place is a very cicley and hot place in the summer seson. It is situated on the Yuba River 150 miles from San Francisco. Friday, June 2 Very warm today. this place is about the warmest place in California in the summer season. It lies in a very leavle part of the country. Mountains are very plainly seen on the North side about 12 miles off. Worked all day this job is the first that I have had at my traid in Cal. Saturday, June 3 Very pleasant today. Worked till about 2 o’clock and then we had to stop work on account of not haveing any lime. They bring lime here in boats in barrels. Saw Brady this evening for the first time since he went to the mines a month or two ago. He is now stoping in this place. Sunday, June 4 Quite a warm day. Walked about the Town this morning and gave a few Tracts away. At 11 o’clock went to church and heard a Presbyterian Preacher preach. There being only one church now in this place. 3 denominations preaches in it, Presbyterian, Baptist and Methodist. Went again this evening and heard a Methodist sermon it was very good. Monday, June 5 Worked ¾ of a day. Had to wait this morning on account of lime. Put a letter in the Post Office this morning to go to San Francisco to Josiah Bowen. Went to a Brickyard this evening to see B. Shakespear. He started this morning with his Bro for the mines on the Long bar. Tuesday, June 6 Very pleasant today. not so hot as it was yesterday. Worked all day today on rough work. The brick work is don very good in Marysville the walls are generally very thick and groutted. There is not very much fire brick work done here yet the rough brick that is made here is very good. Wednesday, June 7 No change in the weather. The middle of the days are very hot but the nights are cold enough to sleep with blankets all the year. I saw snow on the mountains from See St. today. Refiared a bake oven part of the day. I like the way they work here very well. Thursday, June 8 Very warm today. Commenced a Press brick Frount this morning for the man that I am working for. A good many people came to look at me work. It seems to be something knew to put up a press brick frount here. The bricks are made here. Friday, June 9 The weather continues very warm. Worked all day on my frount. I am using marble dust in the place of san. There being no good white san here. The san in this place is very good but is very dark like the san in New York. The brick that are made here are better than they are in San Francisco. Saturday, June 10 Another very hot day I think as hot a day as I have ever expearnced. Worked all day on my frount putting it up by the day. I like the men that I am working for very well they seam also to like my work very well. One of them Mr. Coplan is a brick maker. His foremen is a bricklayer Mr. Leverick. Sunday, June 11 Very pleasant day not so warm as it was yesterday but the best of days this season of the year in Marysville is very unpleasant on account of the dust. The streets are not paved or planked and it makes the walking very bad. Went to church this morning and also in the evening. I liked the minister very well. Monday, June 12 Very pleasant day to work in the evening we had a thunder storm something very unusual in California. It did not rain much here but it pased partly over the Town. I received a letter today from Josiah stateing that he had been sick and not doing much in San Francisco. Tuesday, June 13 Worked all day on my frount. The weather is very dry and hot. This place is a very unhealthy place to live in the summer season. The water is very bad they have it brought halled from the river in hoggheads and use the water from out of some of the wells. The river water is the best. Wednesday, June 14 Very warm today at work. Felt very unwell today did not prespire not-with- standing it was very hot. In the evening Shakespear and I walked up town to see about takeing a room for him and I to live in. Expect to take it Saturday evening. Thursday, June 15 The weather still keeps very warm. Worked today on the frount. I am the only hand they have working for them now. Everybody seams to speak very well of my frount. I have not fealt any better today. I feal very feverish. I am a fraid that I am going to get sick. Friday, June 16 No change in the weather. Cleaned down my frount today all appear to be very well pleased with it. I dont feeling any better yet I was scearcely able to work today. I am afraid that if I stay in Marysville that I will get sick. I think that if I get any worse I will go to San Francisco and stop. Saturday, June 17 Went to work this morning at 5 o’clock very pleasant it being cloudy and cool. Worked till dinner time then we had to stop work on account of rain. Rained till about 3 or 4 o’clock. I am very sick yet pased a very bad night. 2 Oddfellows came to see me this evening about 9 o’clock. Sunday, June 18 Rather pleasant today or rather considered so in Marysville. Took a dost of compasition last evening—and a good sweet last night felt a little easyer. Went to church at 11 Text Ec. 48. 26-27. Dont feel any better yet. Felt very unwell all day. I think it will be better for me to go down the Bay. Monday, June 19 The weather still continues without any change. Went to this morning for Mr. Perry on a large Hotell my first bos being out of work at present. Wants me to come back when he gets more work. I feel something better today but still takeing medison. Tuesday, June 20 Today has been quite pleasant for this place. We work very hard where I am working the walls are very thick. I am acquainted with 2 bricklayers that I am to work with Shakespear and Wm. Smith. Hope I am still getting better. I expect to leave here tomorrow evening. Wednesday, June 21 Today has also been quite a pleasant day. Worked all day. Still getting better I hope. I had a better apatite today than I have had for the last week. Shakespear and I expect to go and room together this evening. We have the refusel of the room for $10 per month. Thursday, June 22 Worked all day very hard. Shakespear and I took a room in C St. and commenced to ranch on a small [s]cale, Got a letter from Josiah and a letter enclosed from Bro. James the first I heard from home since I left last 14th of February. Wrote to Josiah. Friday, June 23 No change in the weather worked all day. I am very thankfull to say that I feel better. I hope that I will get well soon. Had quite a large fire last evening large quanity of hay burnt. Saturday, June 24 Very pleasant day remarkable weather in this place at this seson of the year. It is generaly very hot about this time. Worked all day made a full week this week getting $8 per day. Still feal better but I dont feal well yet. Sunday, June 25 The weather continues very pleasant but the ground is very dry and dusty. At 11 o’clock I went to church a Methodist Preacher from St. Louis pr. Text. Luke 13.7. Went again in the evening a presbyterian minister preached a very good sermon. Monday, June 26 No change in the weather. Worked all day work do not go so hard with me now as it did at first. I feal much better now than I did. I wrote a letter to Bro. James yesterday. D. White went to San Francisco today. Tuesday, June 27 The weather has been a little warmer today. The people here say that at this time last year it was very hot much warmer than it is now. Worked all day. in the evening I made me a cot to sleep uppon. Wednesday, June 28 Today it has been something warmer than yesterday. It has been about as warm today as we generally have at home at this seson of the year. Worked all day. Thursday, June 29 The weather continues warm but the nights are very cool and pleasant so we can sleep well. You can sleep with as much cover in this country the whole year as you can sleep with it on you at home in the winter. Worked all day. Friday, June 30 No change in the weather it continues very warm and dusty. We dont expect to have any rain for 5 or 6 months yet. This country is very good for our business provideing we had enough work to keep us at work but that is very seldom the case. Worked all day. Saturday, July 1 At this time last year I was in Boston on an excursion. Little did I expect then that I would be in California a year from then. Worked very hard today made a full week. My prospects for this summers work is very good at present in this place ( Marysville) Sunday, July 2 Very pretty day. Mr. Woolf was here to see us this morning at 11 o’clock. I went to church the Presbyterian preacher preached Text Hebrews 11.7 he also preached in the evening and I was there. In the afternoon I wrote a letter to Bro. Armor in San Francisco. Monday, July 3 Another very warm day worked very hard all day. I am getting along very well with the man that I am working for ( Mr. Perry ) My prospects are very good for this summer in this place ( Marysville ) We all have to work very hard for this man. Tuesday, July 4 The weather continues very warm. Today we all kept holyday being the 4th of July. Today was generally observed in this place as a holyday. The fire companys were out and looked very well. 4 companys were out they spent part of the day in a grove about ½ mile from Town. Oration by N. Carroll [--]. In the evening I went to church. Wednesday, July 5 Today was a very warm day I think about as warm a day as I ever experanced but not as warm as expected to be. We all worked very hard today. Mr. Shakespear my partner in ranching expects to leave to go to Sacramento to work in a mill. Thursday, July 6 Not so warm today on account of the wind blowing so hard. It blew so hard that we had to stop work at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Dirt and mortar got in my eyes and made them very sore. The air was thick with dust and made it very disagreable. Friday, July 7 The wind still continues blowing hard so hard that we cannot work. We began to work and had to stop. Shakespear and I went home and the rest went a fishing. Shakespear got ready and went to Sacramento & left me ranching allone. He went to run a mill. Saturday, July 8 Not too windy today to make it pleasant. We worked all day but the sun was very warm part of the day. I deposited $160 this evening in Adams & Co. Express and Banking Office for safe Keeping they give no interest. Sunday, July 9 Very warm today. Been unwell today. At 11 o’ clock I went to church Text Romans 8 and part of 9ve. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. Preached from it very well. Afternoon I walked to feather River evening I went again to church. Monday, July 10 Monday morning felt very unwell, unwell all last night. Worked till 3 o’clock and had to stop work on account of feeling so bad had something like the disentery with very bad pains. Mr. Crowell, Smith and Dan came up to see me. Recomended Davis Pain Killer. Bought some. Tuesday, July 11 Felt very unwell stayed at home and took my medison feal better this evening. Mr. Wolf came to see me dinner time. Got 4 letters today one from Mrs. Slicer, 1 from Josiah, 1 from Shakespear and one from Mr. Richardson from the mines. Wednesday, July 12 Felt a little better and went to work. Worked till dinner time and got so weak that I had to stop work in the afternoon. Went to Feather river and went in bathing and stayed there most all the afternoon a very pleasant place. Thursday, July 13 Went to work and worked untill about 3½ o’clock then I stoped on account of feeling weak. I attribute my weakness to the intense warm weather. The thermomiter stands now about 100 to 114 deg in the shade. The place where we have been at work is a very warm place & we worked very hard. Friday, July 14 Feel better today. Worked all day. We do not work so hard now as we have been working. Work is very dull now in this place but the prospects are good in a month or so for a few hands. Mr. Shepperd was up to see me this evening. Saturday, July 15 The weather continues very warm. Most all day seems like the warmest. We went to work this morning between 4 and 5 o’clock on account of the heat. Worked till about 3 and finished the second story. Came home and read over my letters to pass away the time. Sunday, July 16 The weather more pleasant today not so warm. Stayed home most all day did not feel very well in the morning so I did not go to church in the morning. Mr. Crowell was up to see me in the morning. Evening went to church Text God is a Spirit. Monday, July 17 The weather continues more pleasant than it has been. Could not work today wating for the joist. Mr. Crowell and I went a fishing. Tuesday, July 18 The weather still continues quite pleasant for this place. However, I think the last few days has been as pleasant as we have at home at this seson of the year and the nights are more pleasant here. We could not get to work today. Wrote a letter to Josiah in San Francisco. Wednesday, July 19 The weather continues quite pleasant. The nights are very cool, makes it very pleasant to sleep. That is one great advantage we have in this hot place. We went to work this afternoon and made a half day. We are now working on the third story. Thursday, July 20 No change in the weather yet continues very pleasant. We worked all day today. We dont work so hard as we did at first. Smith is going to leave us after today. He is going to work for himself. Friday, July 21 No change in the weather yet. Worked all day. Went to the Post Office this evening as usual. I go most every day for a week after the mail comes in. I have been expecting a letter from Jacob. I have not heard from him since I left home. Saturday, July 22 The weather getting warm again quite warm today. At 11 o’clock I went to church. A stranger preached Text 10 chapter of Mark concerning the young man. In the evening I went again the Pastor preached Text 97 PS 1 verse. Spent most of the day at home by myself. Sunday, July 23 Today has been very warm. The thermomiter stood at 113 in the shade. I worked all day in the sun. There was quite a Spree this evening in frount where I live about some dogs they have a dog law here everybody that keeps a dog has to pay a tax. Monday, July 24 More pleasant today a good brease all day. This evening we had a little sprinkling of rain which was very acceptable but it was so little that it did not do much good. It is very dry and dusty most everything is most dryed up. Tuesday, July 25 Part of the day was very warm. I think that the warm part of the day is about 4 o’clock in the evening. The new steam boat that was built in San Francisco for this place came up today. They made a great to do about it. The bells rang and fired cannons etc & some speaking. Wednesday, July 26 The most of the day has been quite pleasant. We leveld up on the last story this evening. We are still at work on some jobing about the building. The water here disagreas with me very bad. I felt very unwell again today. Thursday, July 27 No change in the weather we worked all day. Just as I was going to bed this evening about 9½ o’clock a fire broke out about 2 blocks off in a Chinese house corner of 2nd St. & Virginia alley. About 200 houses burned in all. The house that I was living in also burned belonging to 2 Bakers they lost most all they had. I only had time to save my bed and close. I helped to save some things at the fire. Friday, July 28 The fire burned most all night- last night. Very few things were saved. The fire burned rappidly all the buildings were fraim but one it was brick. I came to the Orientle hotel and stoped after I was burned out where I am now stoping. We worked all day. Mr. Peal came to see me about building him a brick. Expect to do it for him. Saturday, July 29 Weather very pleasant. We could not do anything on account of the carpenters not being ready. I made inquery about Brick and lime. I can get brick and san delivered for $12 lime for 3 to 3 ½ cents per pound. My prospects are now very good for work this summer. I deposited $80 in the Adams & Co. Express. Sunday, July 30 Today has been a little warmer than yesterday. At 6 o’clock I went to church the Rev. Mr. preached he also preached again in the evening. He has a very good congregation. Generally spent most of the day about the house. I dont spend my sabbath as well as I did at home. Monday, July 31 Very pleasant day a good breeze stiring all day. Commenced to top out our hotel this morning worked all day. Feel very well contented and enjoy myself very well. Monday, August 7 Went to work for English Tom and Robinson on the corner of Lee and 3 St. Mr. Crowell also went him and I are boarding together. Tuesday, August 8 Very warm this afternoon. Saw one of the labours ( a black man ) fell from the causeaf(?) drinking ice water he went to work again after a hour or so. Wednesday, August 9 Very warm today worked all day felt very unwell today. A poor man came to the building today begging. He had both eyes blown out in the mines. Gave him something. Wednesday, August 16 Another very warm day. The thermometer stood at about 110 degrees.
