Today has been quite a lively day among the young folks of Marysville making calls &co. &co. I was oblige to keep quiet on account of Biles and a very sore finger. Sunday, January 2 The weather still keeps cloudy and damp. In the morning I took a walk with Dr. Buel out to the Graveyard. At 2 o’clock I went to S. School. Evening I went to the Episcopal Church to hear Mr. Taylor preach. My finger is very sore yet. Monday, January 3 The weather continues about the same. My finger is still very sore it keeps me from work. I squared up my Lodge Books and made out my Report for tomorrow evening. My partner is at work. Tuesday, January 4 The weather continues damp & cloudy. My finger is still very sore so I can not work. I resigned my office as R. S. of Yuba county on account of going home. I am now geting ready for that purpose. Wednesday, January 5 The weather continues about the same. I am still layed up with my finger. Evening went to the fire company & Paid up my Dues. Thursday, January 6 Weather continues the same. I am still idle on account of my finger but it is geting better. Friday, January 7 The weather cloudy and damp. I am not at work but I am making all the necessary arrangements to start on the 20th of this month for Home. Eve we went to the sing. Saturday, January 8 The weather continues cold and foggy. I have been out all day collecting and have been quite succesfull. We are not doing anything now but we have a little to do as soon as it gets ready. Sunday, January 9 The weather continues quite unpleasant. My finger is still sore. I did not go to Church in the morning. But to Sabbath and church in the afternoon and Evening. Monday, January 10 The weather continues foggy and cold. I am still at work geting my Business so arranged so I can leave for the Atlantic States on the 20th of this month. Josiah is at work. Evening at Home. Tuesday, January 11 The weather continues about the same. I am still geting ready to leave for Home. Evening at the Lodge got my Travling Card for 5 Months. Wednesday, January 12 The weather continues very cold and foggy. Am geting along very well in setling up our old accounts. I want to get off by Saturday next. Thursday, January 13 The weather continues about the same. I have been quite busy all day in geting ready to start on Saturday next. Friday, January 14 The weather continues very foggy and cold. I have been very succesfull in arrangingg my business so I can get off tomorrow morning. I have settled up most all of our old accounts. We had quite a good time this eve at Home. Saturday, January 15 Weather quite cool. I started for San Francisco & arrived there about 10 o’clock. We had a very pleasant trip down. We stopped at Sacramento and Benitia on the way. Sunday, January 16 In San Francisco weather very pleasant much warmer than in Marysville. Stoping at the What Cheer Hotel. 11 o’clock went to the First Baptist Church found Bro. Armor there. The Rev. Mr. Saxton officiated. At Sabbath School 2 o’clock same place. Monday, January 17 The weather very pleasant. At 9 o’clock Mr. Armor & I went out to the Steam Boat Sophie McLane lanched it went off without any axident what ever. In the afternoon I was with Mr. Lennox of M. Ville eve with Mr. Walker. Tuesday, January 18 The weather very pleasant. I bought my Ticket in the second cabin through to New Orleans Tehuantepec rout for $180.00. We go out on the Sonora. Eve we went to a lecture at the 1st Baptist Church subject [--]. Wednesday, January 19 The weather very pleasant. The weather in this place is the best in the winter season. I passed off today in writing letters &co. I was with John Colison awhile. Tomorrow at 9 o’clock we start in the Sonora on my way Home. Thursday, January 20 The weather mild and pleasant. We moved off from the warf just at 10 o’clock with 283 passengers all told. We found it a little rough out in the heads & a good many got sick. I felt a little sick but felt well as soon as I got my dinner. I had quite a number of acquaintances to see me off. Friday, January 21 At sea but in sight of land at 12 o’clock. We were in Latitude 34.09 North Longitude 121.07 West distance from San Francisco 234 miles. Cours South 17 degrees East. Jas. S. Watson, Com. All on board well & enjoying themselves. We still keep in sight of land. Saturday, January 22 Weather very pleasant and sea quite smooth 12 o’clock Latitude 118 degrees 23 West Distance run last 24 hours 245 Miles. I saw the sun rise & set today without seeing land. I keep quite well and find the passengers very agreeable. Sunday, January 23 At day light this morning we came in sight of Siare & Nativadad Islands. A man in the stearage died at 6 o’clock this morning & was throwed overboard. He died from the effects of Hard drink. 12 o’clock in Latitude 27.26 North Longitude 114.52 West. Distance run last 24 Hours 265. Monday, January 24 Weather keeps very mild and pleasant. At 12 o’clock in Latitude 24.20 North. Longitude 111.50 West. Distance 246 Miles. I have taken a very bad cold and feel very unwell. Pasted Cape St. Lucas this evening. 990 miles from S. Francisco. Tuesday, January 25 Weather continues very pleasant. We are crossing the Gulf Stream of Cal. today. At 12 o’clock in Latitude 21.29 North. Longitude 108.17 West. Distance 262 Miles. I still keep quite unwell with a bad cold. Out sight of land all day. Wednesday, January 26 On the coast of Mexico. The weather continues very pleasant. 12 o’clock in Latitude 19.09 North Longitude 104.42 West. Distance 250 Miles. We were in sight of land and quite clost at times. Stoped at Monzamilla at 2 o’clock and took on two passengers. It is a very small Spanish Town clost to the water’s edge & a very little in from the sea. Thursday, January 27 The weather very pleasant. 12 o’clock in Latitude 17.18 North. Longitude 101.24 West. Distance 226 Miles. We got into Acapulco about 8 in the evening and went aboard the Oregon for Mantosa(?). The full distance from San Francisco to Acapulco 1808 miles. It was very dark in the Harbor so we could not see anything. Friday, January 28 On our way to Mantosa on the Steamship Oregon. Weather continues very pleasant. Distance from Acapulco to Mantosa 295 miles from Mantosa to San Francisco 2108. Time to Acapulco 7½ days. We are having a very pleasant trip in sight of land all the way down. Saturday, January 29 Weather very pleasant. We arrived at Mantosa about 12 o’clock. We got ashore without an axident. The Harbor is very poor about ½ doz. Mexican Horses very poor. We started in the Stage at 4 for Zehuantepec arrived there at dark 14 miles. We put up for the night. Road and seenery very good very anc. Looking place. Sunday, January 30 At Tehuantepec morning at 7 o’clock we started for Smith ranch in the Stages distance 45 miles. Part of the road very mountainous but a very good road has been made. The seenery is very romantic & grand. We pased over several very pretty streams and two Mexican Towns one San [--] 1500 inhabitance. Monday, January 31 Weather pleasant. Thermomter 80. We arrived at Smith Ranch at dark to stop for the night. Started this morning at 7 on horse back for Serabian Distance 33 miles. Road very good one Stage came over with us with 12 or 14 passengers. Seenery all the way long beautifull. We crossed several very pretty streams of water all came in before dark. Tuesday, February 1 The weather continues very pleasant. We started out this morning for Suchil Distance 33 Miles. I got through before dark but some of the passengers did not get through. Part of the Road was very muddy but all can be made a good road. We met with no axident whatever. Wednesday, February 2 At Suchil on the Coatzicvalco River where we take the steamer but it is not in yet. The balance of the passengers came in this morning looking very bad but all well. The boat came up and we started at 2 o’clock. We all had fine sport shooting at aligaters. We started in the river at dark. Thursday, February 3 We started as soon as we could see this morning Uintatian arrived there about noon 93 miles from Suchil. The Quaker City being in we started in her for New Orleans. Crossed the bar at 3 o’clock 20 Miles from Minititlan. The country through here looks well & climate good. Friday, February 4 At sea the weather a little rough. At noon at Latitude 21.43 North Longitude 92.49 West. Distance form Coatzicoalco 231 Miles. Wm. 1st Officer Saturday, February 5 Raining most all day. Noon in Latitude 26.15 North Longitude 90.40 West Distance run 288 Miles from the Miss 170 miles. I have been sea sick I am not over it yet. Sunday, February 6 Weather pleasant. We arrived at the mouth of the Miss. At day light arrived at the warfe at New Orleans about 4 in the afternoon. Distance from the mouth of Miss 110 miles. Distance from San Francisco to New Orleans 2970 Miles. We saw very many pretty Shugar Plantations coming up the Miss River & the battle ground of New Orleans. Monday, February 7 In New Orleans weather very pleasant thermometer 70. I stoped at the St. Charles Hotel with my friends that traveled together. We bought our tickets for Cairo on the John Warner to start tomorrow evening. I spent the day in walking about the city. I find it to be a very large and business city but it appears to be a very unhealthy place. Tuesday, February 8 Weather continues very pleasant. Spent part of the day walking about & part on the Boat. We started just at dark in a heavy thunder gust. The lightning struck a ship just by our side as we was going out but we could not tell what damage it done. It rained very hard. Wednesday, February 9 Weather cooler but pleasant. We came about 100 Miles today in the last 24 hours. We pased very many pretty plantations. We pased Baton Rouge this afternoon it is a very pretty little Town. The State Hospital is a very large and pretty Building. This is the place where Gen. Taylor ust to live. Thursday, February 10 Weather pleasant. Most of the country that we have pased through today has been poor and unsettled. We pased Natchez this afternoon but I was asleap and did not see it. I was told it is a very pretty place of about 15 thousand inhabitance. Friday, February 11 The forenoon of today was very pleasant it commenced to rain about noon and got foggy. We arrived at Vicksburgh about 10 o’clock 400 miles from New Orleans. Vicksburgh is quite a large city but most of it lyes off from the river which can not be seen. 8 o’clock it is so dark & foggy that we have to stop and ty up for the night. Saturday, February 12 Fortunately the fog cleared away last night about 2 o’clock and we got off. Today has been quite pleasant. The country we are passing through now is by appearance is not very good oing to it being to low that it overflows. Sunday, February 13 Today has been quite mild and pleasant. We arrived at Napolean, Ark at 8½ o’clock. It is a very poor looking place at the mouth of the Ark. River. Wood is very plenty on this river they sell it to the steamboats at 2 to 3 dollars per cord. Monday, February 14 Today has been quite pleasant but last night we had quite a thunder storm and very foggy for awhile. We were detained about 6 Hours in consequence. We arrived at Memphis, Tenn. At dusk. It is quite a city. Tuesday, February 15 The weather has been a lot warmer for the last 2 or 3 days than it was when we left New Orleans. We pased some considerable high land today on the Tenn side of the River the oposite is all low land. We see but very few farmers along the River. Wednesday, February 16 We had another thunder storm last night & it got foggy agan. We tied up about 4 Hours today it has been quite pleasant. About 9 0’clock this morning we commenced to meet ice floting in the river in small cakes. We arrived at Cairo at 9 in the evening 8 days from New Orleans. Thursday, February 17 We stoped at the Taylor Hotel. Started in the cars at 4 this morning arrived at Sandoval or Centralia at 9o’clock morning got our Breakfast and started from there at 12. Most of the country along this road looks poor. We past through little Towns about every 20 miles on the road. Friday, February 18 We traviled all last night and arrived at the terminis of this road ( Illinois & Central R. R. ) at Dunlieth oposite Debuque. About 7 o’clock crossed the river on a slay on the ice. After some little trouble I found where our sister lived. She and her Husband is Boarding with her Brother in Law Mr. Power. Saturday, February 19 I find the weather very cold here with a little snow on the ground. I am stoping with my sister or at the house of Mr. Power where my sister and Brother in law Boards. I find them to be a very pleasant Family and they treat me with much kinship. Debuque is quite a little city. Sunday, February 20 Weather pleasant but cold. Still at the Powers with my sister. I stayed in the House most all day. We walked out in the afternoon a piece to see the country a mile or two but the walking is very bad. Did not get to go to Church all day. Monday, February 21 Weather very pleasant and the ice is brakeing away so people can cross in little Boats. Mr. B. P. Power, Spalding & I went out with Mr. Tigar to see his farm the one that Jacob is talking about bying. The roads is quite bad at present. I was very well pleased with the place. Tuesday, February 22 The weather continues pleasant. I leave this afternoon for Cleveland, Ohio on my way to Balto. Before leaveing I had sisters and her little boys likenesses taken & gave her mine. I had some trouble crossing the river as it was partly froze over. I bid them all fairwell and left in the cars 5 o’clock eve. Wednesday, February 23 I traveled all last night got into Chicago a little before day light got in Cleveland 9 0’clock this evening. Put up at the Johnson House. We passed through several Citys [--] Chicago & Toledo all being large citys. Most of the country is very good looking great deal of Wood. Thursday, February 24 Today has been quite pleasant at Cleveland Ohio. Called at the Feameal(?) Semenary to see Miss L. W. and spent a very pleasant call. Cleveland is quite a large city and a very pretty place. I started at 12 o’clock noon for Balto. Lake Shore Road via Elmira. We saw a little snow just before we got in Elmira. Friday, February 25 Snowing most all day. We traveled all last night got into Baltimore at 5 o’clock eve. Put up for the night at the Calvert St. House. After supper I went to see Mrs. Armor and then I went to find Bro. James and after some considerable trouble I found him at home on Fayette St. I also went to prayer meeting at our Church. Saturday, February 26 Snow on the ground and raining. Walking very bad. I stayed at the Hotel last night. Bro. James invited me to stay with them & I accepted the invitation. He is living very pleasantly on Saratoga St. No. 311. I made a few calls today. Sunday, February 27 Weather pleasant but under foot very bad. Bro. James, Annie, Josephine & I went out to Bro. Jacob’s found them all well they were very glad to see us. We spent a very pleasant day returned in the evening. We also saw sister Martha there she is well and was glad to see us. Monday, February 28 Weather pleasant and walking geting much better. I spent the day on making calls on my acquaintances. I took tea at Cus. Susan Baker’s spent a very pleasant afternoon there. Cus. Ann Cunningham, Aunt Casey was there. Tuesday, March 1 The weather a little cool but pleasant. Called at the Record Office to attend to some business for Wm. Gwinn. Rec. a letter from Josiah S. Bowen. Called to see Dr. Amos. Sister and I called on Cos. Lizzie Hartman and Cos. Ann Cunningham and met Jacob and Mary there. Wednesday, March 2 Weather pleasant. Bro. Jacob came to town and spent the day with us at James’. We also called on Dr. Amos and walked out to Mr. Slack’s. We spent the evening with Mr. Green ( Annie & Brother in law ). We spent a very pleasant evening with them. We then returned to Bro. James. Thursday, March 3 Today very unpleasant raining all day. Jacob was with us all day. We spent the day pleasantly together talking about our boyish days &co. &co. &co. Evening I answered Josiah’s letter. It rained so that we did not get out all day. Friday, March 4 Weather pleasant today. Jacob walked with me to the Post Office and the Record’s Office and then we parted he went out home. I spent the balance of the day walking about and at James’ House. Saturday, March 5 Weather pleasant. Yesterday afternoon Annie and I called on Cos.Magga Allen & Virginia Boalding found them all well. I spent last eve and night with Mrs Slicer. I called to see Mrs. Thomas McDonald and also Mr. Bowen. Eve Annie, Josephine, James and I went to the rehursal. Sunday, March 6 Very pleasant day. At Dr. Fuller’s Church morning and evening and sabbath School in the afternoon. 397 Schollars present and 57 Teachers. Evening I took tea with Mrs. Armor and went to Church with the Ladies. In the evening 3 men baptized. Monday, March 7 Cloudy and rained most all day. Bro. Jacob came to town for me and I went out home with him. I found them all well and very glad to see me but could not get out much on account of the rain. Tuesday, March 8 Cloudy & showery all day. Last night we had quite a thunder storm. We were disapointed on account of the weather on making a call on Mr. & Mrs. Barlet on the Harford road but we spent a very pleasant afternoon & eve with Mr. Gatch & Family and Miss Ella performed very pretty for us on the piano. Wednesday, March 9 Weather clear and very pleasant. Morning I called to see sister Martha & took dinner with her. Afternoon, Jacob, Mary, Andy, Ella Gatch & I rode over to see Mr. and Mrs. Bartlet and spent the afternoon and evening very pleasantly with them. Thursday, March 10 Weather very pleasant. James Thompson and I walked in town this morning. I called past Mrs. Slicer’s and then came up to Bro. James. Cousin Ann Cunningham and Mr. and Mrs Baker and Sady spent the evening with Bro. James. Friday, March 11 Weather very pleasant but a little cloudy in the evening. In the morning I called to see John Knoblock. Aunt Mary and I took dinner with Andy Cunningham. Afternoon sister Annie and I made the following calls. First to see Annie’s mother and then her sister & then went to see cousin Ginnie Boulding and spent the evening there. Saturday, March 12 The weather continues very pleasant. Real Spring weather. I spent the day very pleasantly calling on my friends. I took tea at Mr. Slicer’s on Washington St. near Pratt. Miss Mary s. and I went from there to her Mother’s and stoped there all night. Sunday, March 13 Weather continues very pleasant. I took breakfast with Bro. James. Jacob was there to spend the day. I spent the balance of the day at Mrs. Slicer’s and went to Church with the Ladies. Spent a very pleasant day. Returned at eve to Bro. James. Monday, March 14 Morning pleasant but rain in the evening. Miss Sarah Baker & I called on her sister Mrs. Flack and spent the evening. After I left there I went over to Mrs Slicer’s and spent a while before going home to Bro. James. Tuesday, March 15 Weather cloudy but very little rain. I went out to Bro. Jacob’s this afternoon found them all well. I received a letter this morning from Josiah Bowen my partner from Cal. All was well. I answered it. Wednesday, March 16 At Jacob’s. Weather very pleasant. Mr. and Mrs. Bartwell, Mrs. Cox, Mr. Thomas & Isaac J. Taylor came down to Jacob’s and also Miss Ella Gatch & Miss Annie Gatch came down and took dinner with us. We all then went and spent the eve with Mr. Gatch. Thursday, March 17 Weather clear but a little cool. Jacob brought me in town this morning. I took dinner with Bro. James and took tea and spent the eve with Mrs. Slicer on Washington St. Miss Sarah was there. We called on Mrs Frazier and met the Rev. Henry Slicer there. I spent a very pleasant evening. Friday, March 18 At Bro. James. Raining all the morning and agan in the evening. I took Dinner with Mr. Wm. Cunningham. I then called on Mr. Bowen and Uncle Richard Taylor. Back then I spent the evening with Mrs. Slicer. Came home at Bro. James at about 9½ o’clock. I am spending my time very pleasantly where ever I go. Saturday, March 19 Weather quite cool and windy. I spent the day in making calls. Sunday, March 20 Weather cool and windy. For the morning I called at Wm. Cunningham’s and went to the Luther Church with Miss [--] to hear the Rev. Mr. McCron very much pleased with him. I made two calls in the afternoon. Evening went to Dr. Fuller’s church. Monday, March 21 Weather very pleasant. I started from Bro. James this morning to go out to Bro. Jacob. On my way I stoped at Mrs. Slicer’s and stoped there untill 11 o’clock. I then left there, got a plate of oysters and coffee for Dinner and a book for Miss Ellas Gatch and then started and walked out to Jacob’s. Tuesday, March 22 At Bro. Jacob’s. Very pleasant morning. We started and walked up to Uncle Isaac’s found them all well. Uncle Isaac is in his 88 year of age and is looking very well. We spent a very pleasant day there. Rained in the evening. We stayed all night. Wednesday, March 23 It rained most all last night. We left Uncle Isaac’s this morning and went back to Bro. Jacob’s. Jacob brought me in town in the evening. Took supper at Bro. James, Cousin Ginnie Bouldin, Mr. B. & cousin Magga Allen was there and spent the evening. Thursday, March 24 It commenced to rain this morning about 11 o’clock and has been raining most all the afternoon. I was at Mr. [-] McDonald’s last night at a party and we had a very pleasant time. I did not get home untill about 3 o’clock this morning. Evening sister Annie & Josephine & I went to a concert given by the Blues Band. We had quite a hail storm last night. Friday, March 25 The weather has been very pleasant today. I stayed at home all the morning. In the afternoon I had two likenesses taken to give away. Called on Miss Cockey on E. Pratt St. and Cousin Lizzie Hartman. Evening went to Monument St Church with the Miss Slicers to a rehersal. Saturday, March 26 Weather cool but pleasant. I had the pleasure to see Charles Slicer last night for the first time since I went to Cal. Feb 13th 1854. I spent this evening with him and his sisters. After supper ( which we took at his Mother’s ) We walked over to Mr. Slicer’s on Washington St. Sunday, March 27 At Bro. James. The weather was very pleasant today. I went to the Sabbath School at Dr. Fuller’s preaching at 11 o’clock and a rehearsal of the S. S. at the same place in the afternoon. We had a fire this afternoon on Pratt St oposite the outer Depot of the Balt. & Ohio R. R. and I saw for the first time the steam fire engines at work. Evening we went to Monument St. M. E. Church. Monday, March 28 The weather continues very pleasant. I did not go in the country today as I expected but stayed about town all day. Evening I went to hear the [--] folks. Tuesday, March 29 This morning was very wet and disagreable but cleared off about noon and the afternoon was pleasant. I spent the evening at the Slicers. Wednesday, March 30 We have had a very pleasant day just cool enough to be pleasant. I spent most of the day with Bro. James. I was in Old Town in the afternoon and called to see Cousin Ann and Aunt Casey and also stoped at Mrs. Slicer’s. Evening Annie and I called to see Mr. and Mrs. Green Thursday, March 31 The weather has been very pleasant excepting a little wind in the evening. I was at Bro. James all day today excepting going to the Post Office after my Cal. papers. I spent the evening at Mr. Frazier’s on Pratt St. Mrs Slicer’s son in law. Friday, April 1 Weather pleasant. Dorsey Slicer & I went to Washington this morning arrived there about 10 o’clock. We went to the Patent Office there. We found Mr. C. Slicer and he was very kind to show us all through the place. From there we visited the Smithsonian Institute where we saw a great many very pretty things. We spent the balance of the day in walking about. Saturday, April 2 Morning very pleasant but rain in the evening. We visited the Capital and Navy Yard today they are at work on the Capital. We visited all the principal places. I was very much pleased with George Town & the Simetary there. We had a very pleasant time. Returned home in the evening. Sunday, April 3 Weather very fickle today but part of it was very pleasant. Today was selebrated in Dr. Fuller’s Church as the 14th aniversary of the Sabbath School. Dr. Fuller preached a very apropriate sermon for the ocation. Spent the evening at Mrs. Slicer’s. Monday, April 4 Very pleasant with the exception of a little wind. I called by Mrs. Slicer’s as I was on my way to Bro. Jacob’s. I got out before Dinner found them all well and glad to see me. The country looks very pretty. The fields are geting quite green. Tuesday, April 5 We had quite a cool night last night. It froze a little & a little frost and the presumption is that it has killed all the early fruit. Bro. Jacob and I took a walk in the afternoon around by Old Sharp’s Mill and called on Messrs Gorsuch, Forister & Mr. Gatch. Wednesday, April 6 The weather continues cool and windy. Jacob and I took a long ride this afternoon over to the Govenstown the County Seat. On my way I saw the place where I was born General Ridgley’s Farm. Evening we all went down to the M. E. Church to hear the Rev. Mr. Daget preach. Thursday, April 7 Today has been quite windy and cool today. Mary and I called to see sister Martha at noon. Jacob came in town with Mary & brought me in. I took supper at Mr. Slicer’s on Washington St & spent the evening. We had a very pleasant time. The Misses Slicers and Misses Goldboroughs was there. Friday, April 8 Weather quite unpleasant today. Cloudy and a little rain. Those four men H. Gambrill, M. Crop, [--] [--] was hung at a few minutes past 11 o’clock. I did not go to see them hung. Saturday, April 9 Today was very pleasant. I was with Bro. James part of the day at his building he showed me haw the Felt Roughs were put on. I walked about town considerable today looking at the improvements. Eve I spent at Mrs. Slicers. Sunday, April 10 Quite disagreeable today foggy and rain. Morning I went to Dr. Fuller’s & at communion from there Bro. James & I went to see Uncle Calvin & I spent about 1½ hours from there I went to Mrs. Slicer’s and spent the evening and stayed all night. Monday, April 11 This morning was quite disagreeable and wet but the afternoon was very pleasant. I stayed at Mrs. Slicer’s untill 10 o’clock this morning. I took Dinner with Cousin Ann Cunningham and spent most of the afternoon at Mr. Baker’s. Evening with Bro. James. Tuesday, April 12 Weather pleasant but a little cloudy and threatening rain. In the morning I bought a canary Bird in the evening I walked out to Mr. Slack’s. Evening I spent at Mrs. Slicer’s. Wednesday, April 13 Today has been very much such a day as yesterday. Spent all the forenoon at Bro. James Reading the morning paper & a Book lent me titled The Sacred Mountains. Evening with company to the Campbell’s Minstrels at the Assembly Rooms. Thursday, April 14 We have had quite a rainy day & some hail fell at one time in the evening. I stoped at Mr. Slicer’s last night & spent most of the day & all the evening there. In the evening I called at the Baker’s and spent an hour or two very pleasantly. Friday, April 15 Weather quite pleasant. At Bro. James all the forenoon. Wrote 2 letters one to sister Eliza and one to Josiah S. Bowen. Spent the evening at Mrs. Slicer’s and went to the rehearsal at the Monument St. M. E. Church. Saturday, April 16 The weather cool & a little windy. I stayed at Mrs. Slicer’s last night and took my Breakfast there this morning. Afternoon I called to see Cousin Maggie & Ginnie and Mr. Bowen & Family. Spent the evening at the Slicer’s and went to the Minstrels with the Ladies at night. Sunday, April 17 The weather was quite disagreeable but no rain. At Dr. Fuller’s in the morning. Took Dinner at Mr. Green’s. Tea at Mrs. Slicer’s and went to Monument St. Church with the Ladies in the evening. At the tea table, Miss Molly S.made the remark in the presence of Mr.Merriel, Miss M. & Miss Sallie S.& I where we may all be in a year from this time. We agreed to write each other if living. Monday, April 18 Quite cool & a little cloudy. At Bro. James all the morning. Wrote a letter to Miss Emily W. in Marysville, Cal. Spent the evening and took supper with Mr. Goldsborough. Tuesday, April 19 Weather very pleasant. Walked out to Bro. Jacob’s this morning. The country is looking very pretty now most of the fruit trees are all out in blossom but the cold weather that we have had has killed most of the fruit. Wednesday, April 20 Part of today was pleasant but it rained a little in the evening. Jim Thompson & I went over to Mr. Bartwell’s this afternoon. Miss Sadey Baker is out spending a few days with Jacob. She is quite lively and we are having quite a pleasant time. Thursday, April 21 The weather is very much changeable it rained quite hard this evening & is thundered & lightning. In the afternoon Mary, Sadey Baker, Jim &. & I walked over to Mr. Bartwell’s and spent the evening. Jacob came after us in the market wagon in the evening. Friday, April 22 Mother has been dead just 21 years today. The weather has been quite unpleasant rain and sunshine alterntely. We came to town this morning in the market wagon stopt at Cou. Ann’s a little while then went up to Bro. James. Spent the evening at Mrs. Slicer’s. Saturday, April 23 The weather continues quite unfavourable still raining. I stayed at Mrs. Slicer’s last night and spent part of today & the evening there. I have been quite unwell for a few days past with a very bad horseness. I am taking some medison for it. Sunday, April 24 Weather very pleasant. Morning I went to Dr. Fuller’s. The aniversary entertainment was repeated today in order to raise more money 513 children & 75 Teachers were present. Evening went to the Monument St. M. E. Church with co. Monday, April 25 The weather continues very pleasant. At Bro. James all the morning & afternoon. Sister Annie, Charley and her 2 sisters & I rode out to Mt. Olivet Cemetery and spent the afternoon. I was very much pleased with its location and improvements. Evening went over in Old Town. Tuesday, April 26 Morning pleasant but afternoon cloudy and raining. At Bro. James all day. Wrote two Album pieces, one for Miss Molly S…..& one for Miss Josephine E….spent the balance of the day in reading. Evening I spent at Mrs. S…. and went to the Rehearsal at Monument St. Wednesday, April 27 Weather cloudy & raining most of the time. I stayed at the Slicer’s last night. This morning after breakfast I took a walk out on Broadway saw Mr. John Miller & called at his house with him. Took tea with Sady Baker from there I went to Mrs. Slicer. Thursday, April 28 Weather quite pleasant today. I was at Bro. James all the morning. Afternoon I called at Mrs. Baker’s to leave my likeness. From there I went up to Cousin Andey’s with Sadey we found Bro. Jacob and Mary there. They had an axident the horse ran away they had to stay all night. Friday, April 29 Weather very pleasant. I went out with Jacob and Mary this morning. I stayed at Mrs. Slicer’s all last night. The country looks very pretty all the fruit trees are out in blossom and a great many flowers are in bloom looking very pretty. I found the children all well & very glad to see me. Saturday, April 30 The weather is very pleasant. I with Bro. Jacob all this morning fixing his gait way at his new road going up to the House from the Road. I came in Town in the afternoon with John in the market wagon. Stopt at Mrs. S. found them all well. Sunday, May 1 The weather remarkable pleasant. I walked to Church with sister Annie and Josephine to Eutaw M. E. Church and then I went to Dr. Fuller’s and heard an excellent serman. Spent the afternoon with Bro. James. Evening I spent at Mrs. Slicer’s and went to Monument M. E. C. with the Ladies. Monday, May 2 Weather very pleasant. Morning I walked out to J. Knoblock’s and took Dinner with them. After Dinner Mr. K and I took a walk through Greenmount Cemetery it looks beautifull. On my way out to Johns I stopt to see Messers Gordon & Cummings. Afternoon I called to see Mrs. Gordon. Eve I spent at Mrs. Slicer’s. Tuesday, May 3 Weather very pleasant. I spent all day today Home at Bro. James they having company most all day. I spent it in reading &co. Evening I went to the rehearsal at Monument M. E. Church with the Misses Slicers. Wednesday, May 4 The weather continues very pleasant as good as man could wish for and the country looks delightfull. I spent most of the day with Bro. James. Afternoon James & I went down to the Fort. Evening I went with Miss S. & Miss M. Slicer to a concert given by the coir of Dr. Fuller’s church. Thursday, May 5 The weather very pleasant. Bro. James & I went to Washington today. A friend of Bro. Jas. a Mr. H. White also went down in company with us. We had a very pleasant time. We visited most of the places that I visited when I was down before. Everything is beautifull there. Friday, May 6 Weather continues very pleasant. At Bro. James all the morning. Afternoon I walked down Balto St. a piece with Annie and Liley. Called to see Cousin Ann C. & also Mrs. S. & took tea with Mr. [--] McD. And spent the evening with him. Saturday, May 7 The weather is warm but quite pleasant. At Bro. James all the forenoon. Afternoon I went down Baltimore St. and got Grandmother’s likeness taken from an old likeness that J. Knoblock had of Grandmother & also one of my own taken for Cou. Annie C. Spent the evening at Mrs. Slicer’s. Sunday, May 8 Weather very pleasant. Bro. James, Annie, Josephie, Charley & I road out to Bro. Jacob’s and spent the day. I remained there. Jacob’s place is looking very pretty now the trees are all geting pretty and green. Andy Cunningham was also out. Afternoon we went to the M. E. C. N. in the new Church. Monday, May 9 The weather continues very pleasant. This morning Mary & I went over to see sister Martha. She is quite unwell confined to her bed but not considered daingerously sick. All the rest of her Family are well. Came in town in the afternoon attended to a little business & then spent the eve at Mrs. S….. Tuesday, May 10 Today has been rather unpleasant cloudy rainy and sunshine alternately. Miss Sarah & Miss Mary & I spent the day in Annapolis with there grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Slicer. They are very old in there 85th year. We spent a very pleasant day. returned to Balto. in the cars. Wednesday, May 11 Most of the day has been cloudy and it rained a little. I stayed at Bro. James all the forenoon. After Dinner I went on a little business downtown. While there I met with Jacob and Mary with Sarah Amanda. Spent the evening at Mrs. Slicer’s. Thursday, May 12 Weather pleasant but a little cloudy. I telegraphed to Washington to Charles this morning about the color of vests that we will wear Tuesday morning next. Made the following calls Mr. L. Slicer, Mr. Cockey, Mr. Baker, and cousin A. Cunningham. Evening spent at Mrs. Slicer’s. Friday, May 13 Weather very pleasant. I am kept quite busy in geting ready to be married and leave on next Tuesday for California. I had some likenesses taken today one of Mr. Wm. Slicer in a Medallion. I called to see Mr. Bowen, Cousin Susan Baker and Cousin Lizzie Hartman. Evening at Mrs. S. Saturday, May 14 Weather cloudy & raining this morning. About 10 o’clock it cleared off & the balance of the day was very pleasant. I made several calls today. In the afternoon I had the likenesses taken of the Misses Slicers to take with me to California & one of Miss Sallie & I taken together for Annie and James. Took tea at Mrs. Slicer’s and spent the eve at L. Slicer’s. Sunday, May 15 Weather very pleasant excepting a little sprinkling of rain this afternoon. I spent the day with Miss Sarah S. relation Dined at Mr. Fraziers and spent part of the afternoon & we took tea with Mr. L. Slicer, Charles & Dorsey Slicer was with us all day. We made 2 or 3 other calls. Monday, May 16 Weather very pleasant. I have been very busy getting ready for tomorrow. We expect to get Married at 8 o’clock and leave for Philadelphia on the 9½ o’clock train. I anticipate a very pleasant time as we will have her two Bros. & Sister along with us. Tuesday, May 17 The weather very pleasant with the exception of a little rain. We were Married this morning at 7½ o’clock at Sallie’s Mother’s House & started for Philadelphia on the 9½ o’clock train. Arrived in Philadelphia about 3 o’clock stoped at Mr. Claiborn’s an acquaintance of Mr. Slicer family. We had a very pleasant time all the way through. Wednesday, May 18 In Philadelphia weather cloudy and damp. We all spent a very pleasant time with Mr. Claiborn’s Family. We started for New York at 11½ o’clock arrived there at 3½ o’clock stoped at the Metropolitan Hotel. Thus far we have enjoyed our selves very well. Thursday, May 19 In New York. Weather quite unpleasant & streets very muddy. I bought our tickets for Cal. in the first Cabbin for $200 per ticket. Star of the West is the Boat. We go in on this side Golden Gate on the other side that connects with this. Sarah & I had our likenesses together for Kate Claiborn. Friday, May 20 Started for California The weather continues very unpleasant raining most of the time. We all left the Metroploitan about 12½ o’clock for the Cal. Steamer Star of the West. We all arrived there in good season and she started at the appointed time 2 o’clock. We spent a very pleasant time in N. York. Saturday, May 21 The weather today has been more pleasant than before we started. Sarah has not got sea sick as yet & she is getting along remarkably well. Dorsey is quite sea sick. I am all right so far. Our ship is very much crowded it being a small ship. We number about 600 all told. Sunday, May 22 Weather a little unpleasant on account of a little rain & wind. Sarah has been rather a little unwell all day. We are crossing the Gulf stream today. We had no preaching on board today there being no minister on with us. Dorsey keeps very sea sick. Monday, May 23 Weather very pleasant today & the water very smooth. Sarah & Dorsey quite well today they were all at the Dinner table this afternoon & was able to eat a good meal. So far we are getting along very well. I have not been sick yet. Tuesday, May 24 The weather continues very pleasant. We are all well and very much pleased with the Officers of the Ship but not so much so with our State Room. Wednesday, May 25 The weather continues very pleasant the water smooth and no one sea sick. Everybody appears well on board and everything is as pleasant on board as the accomadations of the Ship will allow. We are in sight of Cuba. Thursday, May 26 Weather continues very pleasant but it is getting quite warm. We went into Havanna at day light for the purpose of takeing on coal & the New Orleans passengers 50 came on board. We remained there about 8 Hours. It is a very large and pretty city. Friday, May 27 The weather continues very pleasant. We have been in sight of Cuba all day. We pased it at dusk this eve. We are all very well aboard. Sarah is getting along remarkably well. Saturday, May 28 The weather continues very pleasant. We were out sight of land all day. Most all the passengers on board the Ship are well. We are all well. Sarah stands it very well. Sunday, May 29 Weather pleasant. We are now about half way between Cuba and Aspenwall. We had no preaching today. They worked all day waying the Baggage so it hardly looked like the Sabbath to us. Monday, May 30 The sea has been a little rough today and most of the Lady passengers were sea sick. Sarah was quite unwell. We pased the Island of Providence this morning. Its inhabitance is about 600. 240 miles from Aspenwall. Tuesday, May 31 The weather has been very changeable today rain and sunshine alternately but rather cool for this place. We arrived a Aspenwall at about 9 o’clock in the morning and took the cars for Panama arrived there a little before dark. We then went on board the little Steamer Tobago & it took us out to the Goldengate all in the best of order. Wednesday, June 1 The weather continues about the same but remarkable pleasant for this climate. We started this morning from our ancerage just at day break. We are as well as most of the passengers very much displeased with the way we are scatered from each other in State Rooms. Thursday, June 2 The weather continues very pleasant with the exception of a thunder storm occasionally. We are getting along very well with the exception of our sleeping arraingements of which we are very much dissatisfied with. We are in sight of land most of the time. Friday, June 3 The weather continues about the same as we have had for the last 3 or 4 days. All on board is well as far as I can learn. Sarah is just tolerable well but I am in Hopes she will be much better soon. She has not been sea sick on this side. Saturday, June 4 Weather continues warm and a thunder storm occasionley. The Waters has been very much troubled today thought to have been the cause of a heavy storm. We have been crossing the Gulf of Tehuentepec all day. Sarah has been quite unwell all day oing to the roughness of the water. Sunday, June 5 Quite pleasant today after the heavy storm that we had last night with the exception of the heat. We had a sermon this afternoon on board the Ship. Sarah is a little better today. Dorsey & I are well. Monday, June 6 The weather has been quite pleasant today with the exception of the warm weather. We arrived at Acapulco about 10 this morning & took on coal & the Tehuentepec passengers. We was detained there about 6 Hours. We amused our selves during the time with the natives & buying fruit. Tuesday, June 7 Today has been very pleasant quite a breeze blowing from the West. We are all getting along very well today. We have been in sight of land all day. We have had no trouble with our Bird thus far. Wednesday, June 8 Weather pleasant but a little warm yet. We psaed Mansanella last evening and put off 4 passengers from Alcapulco. We are on the Gulf of Cal. Today. Sarah has been quite well today. As well as Dorsey and myself. Thursday, June 9 The weather is quite cool & pleasant very much to the satisfaction of the passengers. We pased Cape St. Lucas this morning about 4 o’clock. We had very pleasant weather while crossing. One of the ingenears got his hands mashed very bad today. Friday, June 10 The weather very windy and cool. We were in sight of land part of today. All hands on board seems to be in good health & spirits. Sarah has been quite well since the weather has got cooler. Saturday, June 11 The weather continues very pleasant cool enough to sleep under the blankets. We have been out sight of land all day. All on Board are well. We expect to get into San Francisco by Monday eve. Sunday, June 12 Quite rough with a steady breeze from the West some few sea sick. We had no preaching on Board today. We arrived at the warfe of S. F. at 1½ o’clock and stopt at the Internat(?) Hotel untill the Sacramento Boat left. We attended to what business we had to do & started for Sac. At 6 o’clock. Andrew S. went up with us as far as Benitia. Tuesday, June 14 The weather very warm. We arrived at Sacramento about day light this morning. We took a walk up through the Town & got our Breakfast & then started for Marysville arrived there about 3 o’clock. Stoped at the St. Nickolis. Wednesday, June 15 Weather very warm. Thermometer 105. I found all my friends here well & very glad to see me. We intend stoping at the Hotel untill we get our room ready at our House on D. St. where we intend boarding with Mrs. Sherman. Thursday, June 16 The weather continues very warm. We got ready & moved up to Mrs. Sherman’s this eve. We took the room that Emaly ocupyed second story Back building. I found everything on my return in our business all right. But I found some trouble with some notes that I indorsed that I had to pay. Friday, June 17 The weather continues about the same very warm. We are quite busy with a few small jobs on hand so I went to work this afternoon at Mr. Williams Mill for my first time since my return. We are burning our 2nd Kiln Brick. Saturday, June 18 The weather continues warm. I have been very busy all day. Dorsey went to work this afternoon on C. St. at Mr. Tilden’s where we have a little work to do. O. H. Pearson is about to fail and will have to take the Stable & for a note I signed with him I have taken a Horse & Buggy. Sunday, June 19 The weather still continues very warm. on account of the heat we did not go to Church today. Sarah is well except for the extreme heat which goes very hard with her but I am very much in hopes that she will stand it without getting sick. Monday, June 20 The weather continues very warm. We started a citchen for Mr. Weascott at his Ranch. We are quite busy now. Evening We went to a consert given by our two Singing Societys. Tuesday, June 21 Weather continues very hot. Thermometer stood at its highest 109 in the shade. We had to stop this afternoon on account of the heat. I rode over to see Mr. Wiel about some work. Wednesday, June 22 The weather continues very warm. We had to stop again this afternoon on account of the extreme heat. The thermometer stood at 110. We all keep well but suffer very much from the heat. Thursday, June 23 The weather still continues very warm. We were compeled to stop work again today on account of the heat. Sarah & Dorsey are well but they suffer a great deal with the heat. Friday, June 24 Today has not been quite so warm which has been very acceptable to us all. We finished Mr. Weascott’s citchen. We are not very busy now and the prospects are not very favourable for very much being done this season. Sarah is well today. Saturday, June 25 The weather has been quite pleasant today. We did not do anything today excepting measuring up a Stable that Fuller wants to build. I done a little work for myself at home. Eve Sarah, Dorsey & I took a walk out to the Brickyard. Sunday, June 26 Weather quite pleasant. At 11 o’clock we went to the M. E. Church & at 8 in the evening we went to the Episcopal Church. We spent the day very pleasantly at Home & at Church. Monday, June 27 The weather is quite pleasant to what it was last week. We are not doing but very little now & times are quite dull and money very hard to get hold of. I have been obliged to pay 1400 Dollars since I came back on notes I signed. Tuesday, June 28 The weather continues about the same. Sarah is very well. I am building a Bath house & orning back of our room which is quite an addition to the House. We keep at work doing a little jobing &co. Wednesday, June 29 The weather continues about the same. We are all quite well. I am busy helping about the building of our Bath House. We are still making brick. Thursday, June 30 The weather has been quite warm today. We are doing more work for Mr. Blewer building a fence wall around his place. I finished my Bath House tank & orning. We worked all day at Mr. Blewer’s. Sallie is unwell today. Friday, July 1 The weather pleasant but a little warm. Sarah has been quite unwell all day. We are not doing very much now. A little jobing is all that we have to do. But we are still making brick and have about 50,000 on hand. Saturday, July 2 The weather is very pleasant for this season of the year. Sarah is a little better today & I am in hopes that she will be quite well in a day or so. We done some work today for Packard & Co. at the Water Works 4th St. Sunday, July 3 Weather pleasant. We did not go to Church today. Sarah was not very well. I went to the Sabbath School at 2 o’clock. I only found one of my boys there Frank Baker but I think I can get the most of them back. Monday, July 4 The weather has been very pleasant today cloudy & just enough wind blowing to make it pleasant. Evening we had quite a little shower which made it very pleasant. We had quite a Selebration today about one mile from Town a great many were there. Tuesday, July 5 Today has not been quite so pleasant. Warmer than yesterday. We commenced a little job for Col. Thompkins at his office on D. St. Sarah has got quite well again. We took a walk in the evening. Wednesday, July 6 Weather quite warm today. the thermometer stood today at 2 o’clock at 101 in the shade. We finished Col. Thompkins job this morning. The balance of the day we spent in seeing after work. I walked out to Mr. Covillow about Pierson’s Stable affair. Thursday, July 7 The weather keeps quite warm. We commenced a job for Judge Bliss at his residence out of Town a little piece on the Feather River. He is now our district Judge. Times continues very dull. We have nothing to do but some small jobs. Friday, July 8 Today was not quite so warm. We worked at the Judge’s today. Evening Sarah & I went to the rehearsal at the M. E. Church and we had a very pleasant sing. Sarah is quite well at present. Saturday, July 9 Weather quite pleasant today. Josiah worked at Judge Bliss’es today. I stayed in town to attend to some business. Times continue very dull hardly anything doing in our line of business. We have not stoped making bricks but intend soon. Sunday, July 10 The weather continues quite pleasant. We did not go to Church today or to Sabbath School. Sarah did not feel very well so I thought it best to stay at home. I spent the day in reading &co. Monday, July 11 The weather continues very pleasant. Last night was quite cool. I worked all day at Judge Bliss’es. We have nothing to do at present but some little jobing. We are still making Brick. Tuesday, July 12 The weather continues very pleasant. Josiah finished at Judge Blissés this morning. I have been about town all day looking for work. Times are very dull now but very little doing at all in our business. Sarah is quite well. Wednesday, July 13 Weather continues pleasant. We are not doing anything of much account & prospects are rather dull for much to be done this season. We are still making brick. Thursday, July 14 Weather continues quite pleasant. We sold a few thousand bricks to go in the Water Works for 8 dollars a thousand delivered & 300 to go to Rabbit Creek for $1.00 per hundred. We are all well. Saturday, July 16 Weather continues very pleasant. We are still idle this afternoon. I rode down to see Mr. Westernhaver(?) for a balance he owes us on last years account. I did not get it . Mr. Denver, the former Gov. of Cansas spoke in town this evening. Tuesday, July 19 The weather continues the same but a little warmer. Times still continues dull. We have not quit making brick yet. Wednesday, July 20 Part of the day was quite warm. I finished at Mr. Reynolds. We commenced an addition to Mr. Miller’s ( the Painter) House. We take it out in painting. Sallie is very well. Thursday, July 21 The weather has been quite warm today. this morning I rode out to see Mr. Britton ( the rancher living by the Butes near the South pass) about making him some brick and building him a House. He has not desided to build yet. Know in a few days. Friday, July 22 Today has been very pleasant. We worked all day at Mr. Millers. Business keeps very dull in our line. Sarah & I went to the sing at the M. E. C. quite a number was there and we had a very good time. Saturday, July 23 Weather very pleasant today. I done some work today for the Cal. Stage Company at there stable. Josiah finished at Millers. Sarah is very well. The Rev. Mr. Blair called to see us this eve. Sunday, July 24 Weather very pleasant. In the morning we went to the M. E. We are all well. Tuesday, July 26 Weather continues very pleasant. J. S. Bowen commenced to dig out his Basement on his house on C. St. where our little Shanty stood. He is going to build a very nice house there. I got the promise of a job today from J. C. Fall. Sarah not very well today. Wednesday, July 27 Weather pleasant. A little warm in the middle of the day. We are still idle. Josiah is still at work digging out for his Basement. We will stop making Brick this week. We have a large quanity on hand. Thursday, July 28 The weather continues about the same. I sat brick in the kiln most all day today. We want to get the kiln closed by Monday night. Our brick is very good this season. We are all well. Friday, July 29 The weather continues about the same. I worked all day on the yard setting brick and [--] the kiln. Josiah finished diging his basement & helped us a while this afternoon. We are all well. Saturday, July 30 The weather continues very pleasant for this season of the year. We stoped molding brick today for this season. Sallie was not very well today so we did not go to Church all day but in the afternoon I went to Sabbath School. Mr. C. Hapgood our Superintendent is very sick so he is not there. Monday, August 1 Weather continues very pleasant. We worked at the yard most of the day getting the kiln ready to set fire. We got it ready and we sat fire about 3 o’clock. We made 8 hundred thousand this season. Tuesday, August 2 Weather continues very pleasant. Quite cool for this season of the year. Josiah was at the kiln all day. I have been attending to some little business about town. Eve went to the Lodge was appointed on finance committee. Wednesday, August 3 Weather continues very pleasant. We started a little job for J. Thursday, August 4 The weather continues very pleasant. I worked all day at J. C. Falls. Josiah at the kiln all day. We are busy now with a few small jobs on hand. We are all well. Friday, August 5 Weather continues quite pleasant. I worked all day at J. C. Falls. Josiah is at the kiln. Our prospects are much better than they have been for work. Sallie is well. We took a walk out to the kiln this eve. Saturday, August 6 Weather continues very pleasant. Still working at Mr. Fall’s. We finished burning our kiln today. We have made since I have been in the Brick business 4 million 6 hundred thousand Brick and of that number 50 thousand were Press Brick. Sunday, August 7 Weather very pleasant. In the morning we went to the M. E. C. the Rev. Mr. Thomas Preached. After preaching they had communion. At 2 o’clock I went to Sabbath School. Monday, August 8 Weather continues very pleasant. We finished at Mr. J. C. Fall’s place. We are a little busy just now. Josiah has a little house to build just for his self on C. St. Sallie is not very well. Tuesday, August 9 Weather continues pleasant. We worked all day. We started a job for Gurtroob. Done a little job for Mr. Meak this eve. I sold 6 thousand brick to a man out by the Butes for $8.00 per thousand. Wednesday, August 10 Weather very pleasant. We started Josiah’s house on C. St. today. It is 20 feet 5½ in by 32 feet deep. We are all very well at present. Thursday, August 11 Weather continues very pleasant. Not quite so warm as yesterday. We worked all day on Josiah’s house. We are all well excepting Sallie’s home sickness. We are not very busy just now but our prospects are very good for work. Friday, August 12 Weather continues very pleasant. We finished the Basement story of Josiah’s house & started on the first story of [-] Aubry’s on Maiden Lane. We are all well. I got a job repairing a house for Bret & Sanderson Saturday, August 13 Weather continues very pleasant. We toped out our job on the Alley. We started the job for Messers Brett and Sanderson on First St. and the lower Plaz-. We are all well. Sunday, August 14 Weather very pleasant. We did not go to Church today but I went to Sabbath School. Sarah is complaining all the time. She is more home sick than any thing else I think. Monday, August 15 Weather continues very pleasant. I done some work at the graveyard today for Dr. Rice. I paid a note today that I gave McDonald in our settlement interest-all principal (528) and also paid Frank $300. Tuesday, August 16 Weather continues very pleasant. I commenced a job today for Mr. J. C. Fall at his store. Josiah is layed up with his hand is very sore. Sarah is complaining. Dorsey & I are well. Wednesday, August 17 Weather continues very pleasant. We finished at Mr. J. C. Fall’s this morning and commenced the Brickwork on the oposite corner repairing two stores for Mr. Sanderson & Brett. Sarah is still complaining. Thursday, August 18 Weather was pleasant today. We worked all day at the same place Sanderson & Co. Josiah is still layed up with his hand. Dan White is working in his place. J. B. McDonald’s little boy was berried today. Friday, August 19 Part of today was quite warm. We are working at the same place. Josiah is still layed up with his hand. We took a letter out the Express Office today from Andrew that had been there for 2 months. Saturday, August 20 Weather quite warm. We are still working at Sanderson’s & Co. on 1st St. We got a job to do today for the County to build a two story privey at the Houspitle. We are quite busy now. We gave in our bid yesterday for the Sewer on B. St. Sunday, August 21 Weather very pleasant. Morning I went to the Presbiterian Church. Sallie did not care to go she was not very well. Afternoon I went to the Sabbath School. Charles Hapgood our Superintendent has not got back yet. Monday, August 22 Weather continues very pleasant. We worked all day at Messers Sanderson & Co. on First St. We are quite busy now. Josiah’s hand is quite sore yet but he went to work this morning. Tuesday, August 23 Weather continues quite pleasant. We finished at Mr. Sanderson & Brett. We are figuring on some large jobs to be let in a few days. We are in hopes that we will get some of them. Sallie was out walking this evening. She is quite well today. Wednesday, August 24 Very fine day today. We started in on Josiah’s house agan today on the mane story. Eve I went to see Mr. W. K. Hudson on the trustees of the Presbiterian Church on business conserning the letting of the Church that is to be built. Thursday, August 25 Weather continues very pleasant. We worked all day on Josiah’s House. We are quite busy now. Sallie is not very well today. She called to see Mr. Van Dyke this afternoon. Friday August 26 Weather pleasant. We are getting along very well with Josiah’s house. We will have the mane story on or about ¼ day more. He will have qa very nice house when he has it finished. We worked very late this evening on the plans of the Church. Saturday, August 27 Weather pleasant. We worked all day getting our Bidd ready for the Brickwork for the Presbyterian Church which will be let next Monday. The sewer was awarded to us this evening by the Counsel. It amounts to $16.00. We are all well. Sunday, August 28 Weather very pleasant. We did not go out today at all. Sallie was not very well and she took some medison & I stayed home with her all day. There was Campmeeting today cross Feather River just a little above Yuba City. Monday, August 29 Weather continues very pleasant. The bids for the brick work & excavation for the Presbyterian Church was given in & let this morning. We got the contract for $5936 Dollars. We are very busy now. We will go to making bricks again. We will have 30,000 molded brick to make for the church. The Fair opened this evening. Tuesday, August 30 The weather continues very pleasant. We signed the contract for the Church today & give our bonds. Bondsmen J. C. Fall, Kingcade, & Wm. C. Halley. We commence to dig the Basement tomorrow. I had no trouble at all getting our bondsmen. We are all well. Wednesday, August 31 Today has been quite warm. We have been very busy today getting our yard ready to commence to make brick. We commence to mold tomorrow morning. I got 2 more small jobs yesterday. We are getting along finely now we have all we want to do. Thursday, September 1 Weather very pleasant. We commenced to mold this morning. We topped out Josiah’s House this morning and commenced a job that we have to do out to the Houspiddle. We are very busy now and we are getting along with it very well. ( Sallie is well ) I went to the Fair this eve. Friday, September 2 Weather continues very pleasant. We commenced suit today on the Water Company for the balance of the money that they owe us on the foundation that we put in for them. The town is quite lively now duering the Fair it is goton up very nice. Saturday, September 3 Weather continues very pleasant. We worked all day at the Hospital. The Fair is still open & a great many strangers is in town. We entered some very nice bricks for exibition. Sallie & I went to the Opera this evening. Sunday, September 4 Weather pleasant. Looks a little like rain. Sallie & I went to the Episcopal Church to hear Mr. Taylor. Sallie was not very well in the evening so we did not go to Church. I went to S. S. at 2 o’clock. Mr. Hapgood has got back with us Monday, September 5 Weather continues very pleasant. We are getting along very well in making brick. We worked all day at the Hospital. We got 3 prizes awarded to us for the Best Brick in the Fair. Sallie is not very well this evening. She took a walk downtown with Miss E. Willson. Tuesday, September 6 Weather continues pleasant. We finished our job out to the Hospital & started a little house on B Street for Mr. Sebert the Blacksmith. We expect to get to work at the church about next Monday. Sallie is quite sick this evening. Wednesday, September 7 Weather continues very pleasant. We worked all day on Mr. Sebers House. We are getting along very well making our molded brick for the Church. We had some trouble getting a new gang together. Today has been quite lively being the State Ellection Day. Thursday, September 8 Weather continues pleasant. We worked all day at Mr. Subers. We are getting along very well with his House. We are quite busy now. We sell a good many brick on the yard this year from 8 to 10 thousand. Sallie is well. Friday, September 9 Weather continues pleasant. We finished Mr. Subers house about 9 o’clock. We are finished up the jobing of Josiah’s House. We are all very well. Sallie & I went to the sing at the M. E. Church. Saturday, September 10 Weather continues very pleasant. We worked all day at Josiah’s House. We had a very large Funeral yesterday. Mr. Sherwood that got drowned in Feather river a few days ago & Mr. Simpson that got shot on Ellection Day by one of the Turners. ( We are all well ) Sunday, September 11 Weather very pleasant. We went to the M. E. Church morning & evening. The Rev. Mr. Blair preached his farwell sermon in the morning & Mr. Miller preached in the evening. In the afternoon I went to Sabbath School as usual. Monday, September 12 Weather continues very pleasant but it has been a little cloudy all day a little bad for us making brick. I commenced a little Fountain for Mr. Moxley. Josiah is at work on his house on C St. We commenced to make mortar at the Church. Tuesday, September 13 Weather pleasant. I worked all day at Moxley. Josiah at his place. We signed the contract for the Brick Suer and gave our Bonds ( Messers Dickey & Gwynn) We have to the first of December to finish it. Sallie is very well today. Wednesday, September 14 Weather continues very pleasant. Dorsey & I went to the graveyard this afternoon to put a wall around a Lott for Dr. McLean. We intended to start the church this morning but the Archetect being away to Sacramento we could not start it. Sallie is well. Thursday, September 15 This morning was very pleasant but in the afternoon it got cloudy & about 3 o’clock it commenced to rain & rained off and on untill late at night. It washed a few of our brick but not enough to spoyl any.. We are all well. Friday, September 16 This morning was quite pleasant after the rain but the sun was quite warm after it got up a little. Mr. Patton has not got up as yet so we have not started the Church yet. We put out the last of the molded brick for the Church. Saturday, September 17 Weather very pleasant today. We set a Rainge at the Dorson House for Mr. Dorson who is going to open that House again which has been laying idle so long. We expect to start the Church next Monday. The Fair is now in operation in Sacramento. Sunday, September 18 Weather quite warm today in the morning. Sallie & I went to the Presbyterian Church. There was no preaching either at the M. E. Church or at the Episcopal the Ministers being away. At S. S. as usual at 2 o’clock. Monday, September 19 The weather continues quite warm. We started the Church today and got along very well for the first day. We started with two bricklayers besides our selves. B. Shakespear & a young man that just crossed the planes. Tuesday, September 20 The weather continues about the same. We worked all day on the Church. We set fire a kiln brick this evening & the wind is blowing quite hard which makes it very bad on account of a waist of wood. Sallie is very well this evening. Wednesday, September 21 The weather clear but very windy and dusty. Worked all day on the Church & we are getting along very well. The archetect wont let us use any soft brick with that exception we are getting along with him very well. Thursday, September 22 The weather continues about the same windy & very unpleasant. All working on the Church. We are still making brick. We want to make a small kiln then we will stop for the season. Sarah is quite unwell. Friday, September 23 It has been another windy day. We are getting along very well with the Church so far. We had but very little trouble. Sallie is still complaining to be unwell but I am in hopes she will be better in few days. Saturday, September 24 The weather has been quite pleasant today. We had very bad luck with our kiln this morning. The hoal had slid out while burning but we are in hopes we will save all the Molded brick. Sunday, September 25 Weather very pleasant. We did not go to Church today. Sarah was not very well. In the evening we took a little walk and called on Mrs. Van Dyke. I did not go to Sabbath School today. We stayed in our room most all day. Monday, September 26 The weather continues very pleasant. We had to stop on the Church for a day or two on account of the molded brick which will be ready in a day or two. While we are wateing we are doing a little job for Sallie on C St. Tuesday, September 27 Part of today was quite windy & dusty. I worked in the morning. In the afternoon Sallie & I took a ride out of town on the other side of the Feather River to see about some wood that we wanted halled. Wednesday, September 28 The weather continues windy. We finished Sallie House on C. St. this morning. I also finished a job for Mr. Reymears. Josiah worked all day at the Brickyard. I worked there a little while in the evening. We commence on the Church in the morning. Thursday, September 29 We bought a yoke of oxen for $190. The weather continues windy and dusty. We got to work on the Church this morning with B. Shakespear & at noon Dan White went to work. We have a good deal of trouble with the archetect but we make out to get along with him very well. Friday, September 30 The wind did not blow quite as hard & it was quite warm part of the day. We worked all day on the Church. We are putting up the North wall first. Sallie was very unwell today & this evening. Saturday, October 1 Today has been quite pleasant. We worked all day on the Church. We finished up the North wall to the hight of the story & commenced on the South wall. We are getting along very well with it. We commenced to get Server(?) ready Tuesday last. Sunday, October 2 The weather was quite warm today. Sallie was not very well so we did not go to Church all day. I went to Sabbath School as usual at 2 o’clock. I saw our new minister there I got an introduction to him. ( McClay) Monday, October 3 Weather quite pleasant but some considered a little warm. We worked all day on the Church. We find it hard to get good Bricklayers. We have 3 or 4 on but they are very pore Bricklayers. Sallie was quite unwell. Tuesday, October 4 Today has been quite pleasant. We all worked on the Church. We will get the Basement in 2 or 3 days more. I felt quite unwell this eve after quit work with a pain in my side. Sallie is quite well this eve. Thursday, October 6 The weather pleasant. We got another House to build on C St. between First & second Streets for A Woman. We are very busy now and we are in want of some good hands. We started the house on C St. I with 2 bricklayers stoped at the Church. We got the Basement story up. I expect we will have to stop for a day or so for the Carpenters. We are all well. I worked on the Church & on C St. We also commenced a little job on High St. We are getting along very well with our work. Evening Sallie & I went to the sing and we had a very good time. We bought some wood today some few cords at $4.00 per cord & some for $4.75. We are very busy now the sewer is ready for us to commence to lay brick. Saturday, October 15 Weather very pleasant. Josiah finished the C St. house. We collected $2000.00 today. $1500.00 on the Church. We paid out Taxes today they amounted ( Josiah & mine including the firm ) $700.00. Sallie is well. Sunday, October 16 Weather continues very pleasant. We went to hear the Rev. Mr. McClay this today for the first time morning & evening. We was very well pleased with him. Sallie was very well today. Monday, October 17 Weather still continues very favourable for our business and we are taking advantage of it. We are doing all we can we are all working on the Church. Friday, November 4 It commenced to rain earley last night & continued all day today. It is luckey for us that we have the sewer so near finished on account of the rain. Mr. Baldwin’s house burnt down late this evening & burnt up most everything in his house. Saturday, November 5 It is still raining very hard. The banks of the sewer caved in on top of the Brick Arch but it has done us no harm excepting at the end where it was not finished. We put the stove up in our room yesterday. Sunday, November 6 The weather has been a little showery but most of the day was pleasant. Sallie did not go to Church in the morning but she went with me in the evening. The Rev. Mr. McClay preached Monday, November 7 Today has been quite pleasant. We worked all day on the Church. We find the brick and every thing very wet. Sallie is well. They charge $2.00 a cord for sawing wood in 3 pieces. We spent the evening at Miss Carry Green. We are all well. Friday, November 11 The weather has become clear agan but we could not go to work on the Church on account of the Slew being so high that we could not get across with brick. We done some jobing this afternoon. Saturday, November 12 Today has been very pleasant. We worked all day on the Church. We are working on the Tower now. We finished the brick work of the sewer today. We haft to hall our Sand from Feather River since the rains. Sunday, November 13 Weather quite pleasant. We did not go to Church in the morning but at 2 o’clock I went to S. S. & in the evening we went to the Presbyterian Church. We are all well. Monday, November 14 Weather continues very pleasant. All at work on the Church. Evening Sallie & I went to the sing. Tuesday, November 15 Weather continues very pleasant. Josiah is at work on C St on the House he put up. A week or so ago during that heavy rain part of the front & side settled so it had to come down. Sallie spent the day with Miss Green. Wednesday, November 16 Weather continues very pleasant but it has the appearance of rain. Josiah got back to the Church this eve. We are all at work on the Tower. I have had the Rhumatism or something like it in my arm for 2 or 3 days. Sallie is quite well. Thursday, November 17 Today has been cloudy & damp but we worked all day. I got a House to build today for Mr. Martin on Third St. We do the hole job for $1240.00 it is for a shooting gallery. Sallie is quite well. Friday, November 18 Morning cloudy and had the appearance of rain but it cleared off about 10 o’clock and the balance was very pleasant. We all worked on the Church. The eve we went to the sing at the M. E. Church. Saturday, November 19 Weather very pleasant. We all worked on the Church. I had an interduction to the Rev. Mr. H. H. Rhees a Baptist Minister who is going to preach for us tomorrow in the City Hall. He came up to see me this evening with Mr. Williams. Sunday, November 20 Weather very pleasant. In the morning we went to the M. E. Church. 2 o’clock I went to Sabbath School & at eve we went to the City Hall to hear the Rev. Mr. Rhees our Baptist Minister. Monday, November 21 Weather pleasant. We worked all day on the Church. Evening we went to the sing. We are all well. The Mail Steamer which has been due for 10 days has not arrived yet Tuesday, November 22 Weather pleasant but a little cool & windy on the building. The Steamer has not arrived yet and great apprehensions are felt for her safety. We are well as usual. Wednesday, November 23 This morning was rather pleasant but the afternoon was windy & about 4 it commenced to Hail & rain so we had to quit work. We met at Bro. Barnes this evening and decided to have a minister of our denomination. Thursday, November 24 Weather pleasant. Today is Thanksgiving Day & also my Birthday. We did not work today. Morning Sallie & I went to Church then we took a walk out on the plains. It is Beginning to get quite green. We are all well. Friday, November 25 It rained very hard all last night and most of today. It leaves the Roof of the Church in a bad condision with it partly on but the walls are all safe. We are all well. Saturday, November 26 Weather a little cloudy but no rain today. I done a little job in the morning for Mr. Low. In the afternoon Josiah & I worked on the Church. This afternoon the lost steamer was [--] this af. Sunday, November 27 Today was quite cool so much so that I wore my overcoat. We had preaching at the City Hall bouth morning & evening by our Pastor the Rev. Mr. H. H. Rhees. He will not preach any more for us untill the first of Jan. ‘60. Monday, November 28 The weather cloudy & raining part of the day. We worked most all day. We are getting along with the Church very well. We will soon be ready for them to put the Roof on. We did not go to the sing this evening. Tuesday, November 29 Weather pleasant. We worked all day. Wednesday, December 14 Weather pleasant but has the appearance of rain mornings is quite foggy. I worked all day on the Tower my self. B. Shakespear is sick. Dorsey is not very well he is not at work. Thursday, December 15 The weather has been quite foggy all day so much so that I worked with my coat on all day. Shakespear is still sick. I am working on the Tower allone. We rec. quite a number of letters from home today. Sallie is well. Friday, December 16 Weather damp and foggy. I worked all day on the Tower allone. Josiah is at work on 3rd St. Evening Sallie & I went to the sing at the M. E. Church. We are all well except Dorsey. Saturday, December 17 Part of the day was quite pleasant. Evening has been quite cool. I worked all day on the Tower. Dorsey is a little better this evening. Sallie is well. Sunday, December 18 Weather pleasant excepting the nights & mornings which is quite cool & foggy. Sallie & I went to Church morning & evening at the M. E. C. The Rev. Mr. Thomas preached in the morning. Dorsey is quite sick and has been for a week past. Monday, December 19 The weather continues very favourable for us mornings are quite cool & foggy. I am working allone on the Tower. Josiah is at work in another place. Evening we went to the sing. Sallie is quite well. Tuesday, December 20 The weather continues about the same the mornings are quite cool. I am working allone on the Tower. We started a house for Mr. Bolinger on the corner of C & 6th Streets. Eve we spent at Miss Carry’s. Wednesday, December 21 The weather continues foggy & damp and the mornings are quite cool. I am still working allone on the Tower. Josiah is working on Bolinger’s House. We spent the evening at home Mr. Williams called to see us. Thursday, December 22 The weather continues about the same this morning was very cool & foggy so cool that it froze on the top of the Tower. B. F. Shakespear came to work this morning he has been sick. Dorsey is getting a little better. Friday, December 23 The weather continues cool & cloudy. I finished up the Tower to the large timbers that came on near the top of the Brickwork. After I finished I went to work on Mr. Bolinger’s House. Eve we went to the sing. Saturday, December 24 Rained & the wind blew quite hard all day. Evening we went to the Episcopal Church and at 12 o’clock we went to the catholic Church and we went with Messers Stratton, Williams and Miss Carry Green & sister. We sat in the Choir. Sunday, December 25 The morning of today was quite pleasant but it rained in the evening. In the morning we went to Church. Miss Emmaly Willson & Mr. Williams called on us in our Room and spent an hour or so singing &co. Monday, December 26 Part of the day was quite pleasant when it was not raining. We did not work today. It has been Kept by some as a Holaday it being the day after Christmas. Eve we went to the sing. Tuesday, December 27 This morning was quite cool & foggy. I commenced to put on the cornis on the Tower Jim & I . It is 83 feet from the Grade. The hole hight is to be including the Spire 149.6 in. We did not go out this eve. Wednesday, December 28 Weather very pleasant today but it was quite cool this morning & it froze a little last night. We topped out the Tower at noon today. We took down all the schaffolding this afternoon. Thursday, December 29 Weather pleasant. I worked part of the day at the Church and the balance of the day at Mr. Bolinger’s. Dorsey is still quite sick. Sallie is well. Friday, December 30 Last night & this morning was very cold & continued so untill about 9 o’clock. I worked allone most of the day. I started Mr. Bolinger’s Stable. Evening we went to the sing at the M. E. Church. We are all well excepting Dorsey. Saturday, December 31 Weather pleasant and the last day of the year. It finds me a Married man of 7 Months & 14 days. Standing so far of a married life I have enjoyed myself very much. I am back at my old Boarding place on D. St. We pay $20.00 per week and furnish our one room for the year that is just pased. We done a very good business. We made 11 hundred thousand Brick & built one of the finest Churches in this place or out of San Francisco. We are all very well excepting Dorsey he is not well yet.
