Mill ran all day. Business tolerable good in the store. Sister Eliza is quite unwell. Was confined before the time child died. Saturday, January 2 Weather continues very unpleasant. Cloudy & driving rain & freezeing made it very slippery. Business dull. Mill ran part of today. I am sufering very much with nueralgy in my teeth. Sunday, January 3 Weather foggy & damp all day. I did not go out to Sabbath School today. I am so unwell with my teeth. I walked down to see Eliza. She is getting along finely. Family all well. Monday, January 4 Weather foggy & damp all day. Jacob went to Balto. on Business. Family all well. I am suffering with newralgia. Tuesday, January 5 Weather more pleasant today not so foggy. Jacob got home this eve. Business continues quite dull. I am still suffering with my teeth. Wednesday, January 6 Weather pleasant. I went to Balto. today on Business and got a tooth drawn. I took gas but I still felt it. Spent the afternoon & night with Mother. All well. Thursday, January 7 Weather quite pleasant. I got through with my Business and then called to see Sister Millie Gees and Sister Annie McComas. Found them all well. Arrived home in the eve. Found my family all well. Friday, January 8 Weather quite pleasant. I was unwell and stayed in Bed all day. The balance of the family are all pretty well. Saturday, January 9 Weather warm but cloudy walking is very bad. Business continues dull. Mill still idle but have Flour on hand but no feed. I feal better today. Sunday, January 10 Weather quite pleasant all day. Sabbath School in the morning and Preaching in the afternoon by Mr. Waters. Monday, January 11 Weather quite wintery all day. Snowed last night & rain & sleat all day. Business dull. Family all well. Tuesday, January 12 Weather pleasant but a little windy. It rained quite hard last night. Charles Slicer came up this morning. I went up to Woodbine to see some oil. He Bought about 9 Bbls. Family all well. Wednesday, January 13 Weather pleasant. In the store alone all day. Jacob & Selby are working on the Pen Stock. Business continues dull. Family all well. Thursday, January 14 Weather quite pleasant. I went to Balto. today on Business came back in the evening. Business just tolerable. Family all well. Friday, January 15 Weather quite unpleasant. Cloudy & damp all day. Walking very bad. Mill running today. Wheat scarce. We are just keeping up the retail trade. Family all well. Saturday, January 16 Weather quite pleasant. Mill ran all day no wheat comeing in. Business just tolerable good in store. Family all well. Sunday, January 17 Weather rain & cold. Sabbath School as usual in the morning. I called to see Mr. Jas. Hale afternoon at there new home Capt. Mercer’s place. Family all well. Monday, January 18 Weather cloudy and snowed a little all day got worse in the evening. Andrew Slicer came out today. Took Maggie in with him. Business tolerable good. Irons for Pen Stock came up today. All well. Tuesday, January 19 Weather pleasant but cool. Mr. G. P. Coleman is still working at the Bridge. Jacob & Selby is working at the Pen Stock. Business dull. Family all well. Wednesday, January 20 Weather continues cold & rain with wind. Jacob & Selby still working at the Pen Stock. Mill idle our retail trade in the Mill is tolerable good. Family all well. Thursday, January 21 Weather more pleasant today but still windy & cold. Jacob & Selby still working on Pen Stock. Business quite dull today in the store. Family all well we rec a letter from Maggie. Friday, January 22 Weather pleasant but cool. I went to Balto. today. Got through & brought Maggie back Home with me. She has been spending a few days with her Gran Ma. Saturday, January 23 Weather quite pleasant today. Business tolerable good today. I wrote to Mr. Williams today. Money matters still very tite. Family all well. Sunday, January 24 Weather quite pleasant. Sabbath School in the morning as usual. Preaching in the afternoon by Mr. Osborn & prayer meeting at night. Monday, January 25 Weather pleasant but a little cloudy. Jacob & Selby at work on Pen Stock. I was in the store all day. Family all well. Tuesday, January 26 Weather pleasant. Jacob & Selby is still working on the Pen Stock. Business tolerable in store. Family all well baby not so well. Wednesday, January 27 Weather pleasant but cool in the evening. Jonnie away most all day. I was in the store all day. Jacob & Selby working on the Pen Stock. Family all well. Thursday, January 28 Weather quite pleasant. Business very dull today in the store today. The Mill ran today. I was alone all day in the store. Family all well. Friday, January 29 Weather quite pleasant. Business dull in the store. Farmers plowing. Mill is still running. Sent J. S. Gary & Son 25 bbls flour today. Our retail traid is very good. Family all well. Saturday, January 30 Weather very pleasant like Spring weather. Business a little better today. Mill is still running. Jacob is working on the Pen Stock. We sent 10 bbls flour Lishear(?), E. Mills. Family all well. Sunday, January 31 Weather quite cold. Sabbath School in the morning as usual prayer meeting at night. Jacob & I went to see Mr. Hale in the afternoon. All well. Monday, February 1 Weather cool. Jacob & Selby worked on the Pen Stock all day. Business tolerable good today. Family all well. Tuesday, February 2 Weather cloudy & commenced to snow afternoon and is still snowing. Business not very brisk. Jacob & Selby worked untill the snow stoped then on Pen Stock. All well. Wednesday, February 3 Weather quite unpleasant. Rained part of the day snowed & rained all last night & very slopy today. Business dull today. Family all well. Thursday, February 4 Weather clear but very wet under foot & windy. Jacob & Selby worked on Pen Stock. Business better today getting in some 300 Bul prime wheat at 2.10. All well. Friday, February 5 Weather quite cold & windy all day. Business dull. Some wheat came in today to 2.10 per Bul prime wheat. Mill idle. Still working on Pen Stock. All well. Saturday, February 6 Weather more pleasant today. Business tolerable good today. Jacob & Selby are still working on Pen Stock. The Bridge Builders finished the Bridge yesterday. Sunday, February 7 Weather very pleasant. Sabbath School in the morning. Preaching in the afternoon by Rev. F. Carbey. Prayer Meeting at night had good Meeting. All well. Monday, February 8 Weather pleasant. Business pretty good today. Jonnie went up the Road. I was alone. Jacob & Selby at work on Pen Stock. Ran up wheat in Mill. Tuesday, February 9 Weather cloudy & wet part of the day. I was alone all day in the store. Jonnie away. Mill ran today. Business dull All well. Wednesday, February 10 Weather cloudy but no rain. Mill running all day. Jonnie came home at noon. Business continues dull little better today. Family all well. Thursday, February 11 Weather very pleasant. I went to Washington to see about Patenting a continued Rail but found Patents ahead of me for the same thing. From there I went to Balto. Stoped all night with Mother found them all well. Friday, February 12 Weather continues very pleasant. Got through with what Business I had to attend to and got back home in the evening. Found all well. Saturday, February 13 Weather quite pleasant like spring all day. Business tolerable good today. Jacob & Selby working on the Husk Fraim now. Family all well. Sunday, February 14 Weather quite pleasant. Sabbath School in the morning. No Prayer in the evening wet. Family all well. Monday, February 15 Weather quite pleasant. We commenced the wall in the Pitt where the Pen Stock goes. We find it quite a hard job. Family all well. Tuesday, February 16 Weather not quite so pleasant today windy & cool. I was alone in the store all day. Jacob & Selby at work on Husk Fraim. Family all well. Wednesday, February 17 Weather quite pleasant. Jacob & I worked all day building the stone wall in the pitt for Pen Stock. Business tolerable good in store. Mr. Selby working on Husk Frame. Family all well. Thursday, February 18 Weather pleasant. Most of the day cool & windy in the morning. We worked all day in the pitt most ready for the Pen Stock. We will have little more Blasting to do. Friday, February 19 Weather changeable all day snowed last night & a little this morning. We worked all day on the foundation of the Pen Stock. Mr. Ensey made another Blast for us. We think that will do. Saturday, February 20 Weather quite pleasant today. We got along quite well today. Got the bottom of the Pen Stock in & all leveled up. The timbers are very heavy but we got along first rate with it. We ordered the Wheel. Family all well. Sunday, February 21 Weather quite cool & cloudy. Sabbath School as usual Preaching in the afternoon by Mr. Richards. At Home the balance of the day. Family all well. Monday, February 22 Weather cloudy & wet all day but not enough to stop us from work. We finished the bottom of the Pen Stock and got the wall up out of water. We wont have to bale any more water. Family all well. Tuesday, February 23 Weather cloudy most all day got quite windy in the afternoon. We had [ to ] stop work on the Mill today had to go to grinding. I stayed in store all day. Jonnie went Collecting. All well. Wednesday, February 24 Weather cold & windy most all day. We had to run the Mill today so we could not work about the new Mill. I stayed in store all day. Jonnie went collecting Thursday, February 25 Weather quite pleasant today. Jacob & I worked all building wall behind Pen Stock. Selby worked at Husk Fraim. Family all well. Friday, February 26 Weather quite wintery today snowed last night & part of today. I went to Balto. to order lumber for Pen Stock and get some things for store. Got back in the evening. Mother & Family all well. Saturday, February 27 Weather quite cold all day & windy. We worked at the stone wall untill about 3. We are ready now to put up the balance of Penstock. Ella has something like the Measles Sunday, February 28 Weather pleasant but cold in the morning. Sabbath School in the morning as usual. Family well. Ella has something like Measles. Monday, March 1 Weather cool but pleasant. We put all the heavy timbers in for the Penstock. Some of the Mashenery came up today for the new Mill. We got along very well but had quite a heavy job. Family all well. Tuesday, March 2 Weather pleasant. We are still working about the New Mill. We have a great deal of heavy work about it. Charlie is quite unwell. We think he is going to have the Measles. Wednesday, March 3 Weather quite pleasant. Working at new Mill. Charlie is still quite complaining. The Measles have not yet come out yet. Ella is about well of hers. Maggie & Baby are well yet. George & Bill have them quite bad. Thursday, March 4 Weather quite cold. Ground white with snow and snowed untill nearly noon. Today U.S. Grant is sworn in as President of the United States. We are still working at the new Mill. Charlie is quite sick with Measles. Friday, March 5 Weather more pleasant today but cold at nights. I have been at work yesterday & today covering over the Race below the Mill. Charlie is getting along as well as could be expected. Saturday, March 6 Weather quite wintery all day several snow storms and high winds. Jacob & Selby worked at the Penstock & husk Frame when they could under shelter. Charlie is better today. Sunday, March 7 Weather quite cold all day. We had no Sabbath School today weather too cold. Bell was very sick all day she has the Measles. Children are getting along very well. Monday, March 8 Weather more pleasant today. We worked all day on the new Mill stone work and Mill Riteing (?) Business dull. Bell is a little better this evening. Tuesday, March 9 Weather very pleasant all day. We were getting dirt out all day about the foundations of the new Mill. Family getting along very well. Wednesday, March 10 Weather wet all day. I went to Balto. on Business got through & back Home in evening. Mill running all day. Family all pretty well. Thursday, March 11 Weather quite pleasant all day. We commenced a Room between the store and fertz House for a shoe shop. Got along very well with it. John Wagner came home Tuesday. Hollie has the Measles. Friday, March 12 Weather quite cold all the morning snowed last night. Jacob & I worked all day on the Shoemakers Shop. Mill ran untill noon. Perry working at the foundation [of the] new mill. Maggie has the Measles. Saturday, March 13 Weather very pleasant today. Jacob & I worked all day on the shoe shop. Selby working on penstock. We are having quite a time all our Children are having the Measles. Some are having it quite bad some are getting better. Sunday, March 14 Weather very pleasant all day. Sabbath School in the morning. In the afternoon Jacob & I rode up to Mr. W. Brandenberg and took tea with his Family. Children still have the Measles. Monday, March 15 Weather quite wintery all day. raining & snowing & some hail but not very cold. Jacob & I worked all day on the shoe shop. Maggie & Hollie is still quite sick. I rec’d a letter & draft from W.L. Williams. Tuesday, March 16 Weather pleasant cool in the morning. Jacob & I worked all day on the shop. Our Mill Wheel & gearing came up today. Selby & Mercer at work on Mill. Hollie & Maggie are still quite sick. The rest of the family pretty well. Wednesday, March 17 Weather wintery all day some snow on the ground this morning & some fell through the day. I was in the store all day. I was quite Busy. Jonnie went to Balto. Put the wheel in today. Children a little better. Thursday, March 18 Weather pleasant. I was in the store untill the morning train came up. I then went to work on the shoe shop. The rest at work on New Mill. Maggie is quite unwell. Friday, March 19 Weather cloudy & wet part of today. We all worked in the new Mill today getting up the Husk frame. Perry is halling up stone for the foundation wall on East side. Maggie is something better today. Hollie is getting along very well. Saturday, March 20 Weather a little cloudy in the morning but turned out to be a pleasant day. We worked all day at the Husk putting it up very heavy work. Business tolerable good in the store. The Children getting better. Sunday, March 21 Weather quite cold. I went to see Dr. Riggs this morning about Maggie. Did not go out to Sabbath School. Our new Minister Preached this afternoon. Mr. Reed. Monday, March 22 Weather continues cold snowed in the evening. We halled up the large rock & commenced the foundation on the East wall. Jacob went to Balto. this morning to try to raise some money. Family all getting along very well. Tuesday, March 23 Weather quite wintery this morning had been snowing most all night. I commenced on the foundation wall commenced on the South West corner and worked there all day. Perry & Jacob has not got home yet. All well. Wednesday, March 24 Weather pleasant today. We had quite a frost this morning. Worked all day at the stone work. Bro. James came up this evening to see us. He is looking very well. Jacob at home yet. Children getting better. Thursday, March 25 Weather quite pleasant. John & I worked all day at the stone work to the new Mill. Jacob got home this eve. Bro. Jas. went back this morning. Jacob did not accomplish much. We are very much in want of funds. Family all well. Friday, March 26 Weather quite wet. I went to Balto. today to attend to some Bus. And get some things for store. Returned home in the evening. Family all well. Saturday, March 27 Weather quite pleasant frosty in the morning. Finished halling up the Husk today. Flour Mill running. Jacob & I worked all day on the walls. Business tolerable good. Family all well. Sunday, March 28 Weather quite pleasant. Sabbath School as usual. No Preaching today. Family all well. Monday, March 29 Weather quite wet all day. Ran the Mill and worked at coging wheels in the Mill. I striped the front of the shoe shop & in the store in the forenoon. Jonnie was away. All well. Tuesday, March 30 Weather quite changeable all day but we worked at the stone wall most all day. Stoped to help with the shaft of new Mill very heavy work. A load of Turner’s came up this morning for us. Wednesday, March 31 Weather pleasant. We worked all day on the West stone wall of the new Mill. Selby working at the husk. Sold some Fertz today. Family all well. Thursday, April 1 Weather cloudy part of today. We are still working on West wall. Selbt & C. T. Mercer working on Husk. We are very anxious to get the Mill up great demand for Plaster but we have none. Friday, April 2 Weather quite wet most all day but we worked untill late in the afternoon. Got out the Large stone over Race and finished the West wall. Family all well. Saturday, April 3 Weather cool & cloudy all day. We got up the large stone and covered the Race for the wall of the new Mill and made a set of Dore frames. Mill is running on midlings. Family all well. Sunday, April 4 Weather quite cold all day froze quite hard last night & thawed but little today. Sabbath School as usual. Preaching in the afternoon by our young Preacher. Family all well. Monday, April 5 Weather not so cold today but it was quite cold last night. Our morter was froze quite hard this morning. We worked all day on the South front wall on the new Mill the other 2 walls are up. Family all well. Tuesday, April 6 Weather cool. We worked all day on the stone work. Jacob, John & Selby working at coging wheel. My hands are getting very sore. Family all pretty well. Maggie is quite lame. Wednesday, April 7 Weather pleasant but cool for the season. We are still working on the stone work. Selby was grinding all day. Family all well. Maggie is still quite lame. Thursday, April 8 Weather cool & cloudy. We worked all day on our wall. We find the stone rough & hard to lay. Selby is running the Mill on Midlings. Family all well. Friday, April 9 Weather clear but continues cool frost most every night. Worked all day on the stone work. If nothing hapens we will get it up tomorrow. All well. Mill still running. Saturday, April 10 Weather pleasant. We worked all day on the stone work. Carbey Preached his farewell sermon this afternoon & took up a collection for Sunday School Monday, April 12 Weather pleasant. Jonnie went to Balto. I stayed in the store all day. Jacob & John finished up the Bal. Of the stone work to new Mill. All. Well. Tuesday, April 13 Weather quite pleasant today but it was quite cold this morning froze last night & a very heavy frost. We commenced the wall for the saw Mill. All well. Wednesday, April 14 Weather continues quite cool. We worked all day on the saw Mill walls. Family well. Thursday, April 15 Weather continues cool froze last night. We finished up the stone work of the Mills today. Family all well. Friday, April 16 Weather quite pleasant today. We worked all day getting timber out of the low land above the Mill brought it down on the truck. Jacob sold his place today to a Man from Balto. Saturday, April 17 Weather quite pleasant again today but had some frost last night. I worked at my new Platform in front of the shoe shop. Jacob went to Balto. to see about selling his farm. The Bargain is not closed yet. This afternoon Mr. A. Forsyth broke his leg. Sunday, April 18 Weather somewhat Changeable today very Cloudy & rained about 9 O’clock but after that cleared off & got quite pleasant. I finished the Platform before the shoe shop today & we got the Poast in. Mill is running. All well. Monday, April 19 Weather very pleasant. Sabbath School as usual & Preaching in the morning by Mr. Hobbs. Prayer meeting at night. Family all well. Tuesday, April 20 Weather continues very pleasant. We worked all day putting on the B--- Sils to Mills. Selby is running the Mill. Family all well. Wednesday, April 21 Weather quite changeable today rained quite hard in the evening & Thundered quite hard. We are still working on the Mill. Family all well. Thursday, April 22 Weather quite pleasant today after the Rain. Jacob went in to the woods this afternoon to get out some Posts for the New Mill. Jonnie is sick today. I stayed in the store most all day. All well. Friday, April 23 Weather quite pleasant today. I went to Balto. on Business. Sold my Gold 650$ at 1.34. Got the news of the Death of Mollie’s baby. Died last week. Returned in the evening. All well. Saturday, April 24 Weather quite pleasant. We are still Busy working about the new Mill. Family all well. Sunday, April 25 Weather pleasant but a little windy. Sabbath School as usual. Jacob & I walked over to Mt. Pleasant Church. All well. Monday, April 26 Weather continues very pleasant. All at work about the Mill getting out the Posts and filling up above the saw Mill. All well. Tuesday, April 27 Weather quite pleasant today. All at work on the new Mill. Business dull in the store today. Family all well. Wednesday, April 28 Weather pleasant. Perry, John & I worked all day halling out timber above the dam and below the Mill for the Mill had a youk of Cattle. Family all well. Thursday, April 29 Weather continues pleasant. We halled up the Saw Mill shaft this morning then we all went to work on the Mill. Selby ran the Mill today. Our retail traid is very good. Friday, April 30 Weather pleasant. A little showery but not enough to stop us from work. All at work on the new Mill. Selby grinding and making Hoop for Burr. Mercer in the woods most all day getting out two pieces for small gurders 29 feet long about 6X7. Jacob went to Westminister brought home a Load of Crocks. Family well. Saturday, May 1 Weather quite wet. Had the appearance of raining all last night. We halled up some lumber below the Mill by the R.R. on the truck. Jacob is unwell. My Family all well. Sunday, May 2 Weather quite wet & cold all day no Sabbath School or Church today on that account. Family all well. Monday, May 3 Weather cool but no rain some little snow fell. Jonnie went to Balto. I stayed in the store all day. Perry & John was halling up scattered timber to Mill. Tuesday, May 5 Weather pleasant a little windy & cool. We had a little frost last night but not enough to do any harm. I was in the store all day. Jonnie came Home in the evening. All well. Wednesday, May 6 Weather pleasant. John, Perrry & George went over to help Mr. A. P. Forsyth to Plant corn today. I commenced to paint the roof of the E. addition to Mill. Thursday, May 7 Weather cloudy & wet in the evening. We are at work on the Gearing of the Saw Mill on the Basement floor. Business dull. Family all well. Friday, May 8 Weather cloudy & wet most all day but not enough to stop us from work. Perry & John Halling dirt above the saw Mill. We were at work on Pit Gearing to saw Mill. Family all well. Saturday, May 9 Weather pleasant. Worked all day at the [--] Wheel Shaft. Got it finished and then the men halled dirt all day above saw Mill. All wel. Sunday, May 10 Weather quite pleasant. Sabbath School as usual had a long school today. Prayer meeting in the evening. In the afternoon Charlie & I walked up to A. P. Forsyth. All well. Monday, May 11 Weather pleasant. We are still working away on the New Mills. All hands some at one thing and some at another. But it appears that we get along slow. All well. Tuesday, May 12 Weather warm. All Hands at work on the new Mill. We put in the line shaft to run the saw shaft today. The men have been halling up dirt above the saw Mill. Family all well. Wednesday, May 13 Weather Cloudy & wet part of the day. Eve we had quite a heavy storm of hail. Dollie had a Colt Tuesday morning last Horse. Jonnie went to Balto. I stayed in the store all day. All well. Thursday, May 14 Weather pleasant today part of it but some rain in the evening. We are still working on the new Mill. Selby is grinding. Family all well. Saturday, May 15 Weather quite pleasant all day. We halled up some Loggs this morning to make a new Bridge over the Race next to the old Mill. All the rest are at work on the Mill. Sunday, May 16 Weather quite wet all the morning. I understood there would be no S. School & did not go but some went and had preaching by Mr. Reed. Afternoon we walked to Sykesville to hear Mr. Reed Preach. All well. Monday, May 17 Weather pleasant. Did not do much as it was a Holiday. We bent the hooks for the new Burrs in the new Mill. I was busy all day. Wm. Derr came down to go to work for us. Tuesday, May 18 Weather cool. I walked to Sykesville to bring up our Ratche Wheel on the Wa--- train. Jacob went to the Mill. Mr. Derr is at work for us now. We will soon be ready to raise our Mill. Maggie’s Legg is much worse. Wednesday, May 19 Weather wet all day. The men are at work inside doing what they can. Business is quite dull. Maggie’s hyp is quite bad since she had the Measles. Thursday, May 20 Weather pleasant. We commenced to raise our Mill today. Got along very well with it. Jonnie Dorsey is about to leave us to get with his Bro in law to work on his Farm. Friday, May 21 Weather cloudy & wet part of today. The men worked all day on the Mill. I was alone in the store all day.Business is dull. Maggie’s hyp is very much worse very Painfull to her. Saturday, May 22 Weather pleasant. We finished raising the main Building of the new Mill today. We got along very well with out anyone getting hurt. Jonnie was back today so I had a chance to help. Maggie is quite bad. Sunday, May 23 Weather quite pleasant. We had quite a large school this morning. Prayer meeting at night. Maggie is quite bad with her hyp suffers a great deal. Monday, May 24 Weather quite pleasant. I have to stay in the store Jonnie is away. The men put in the Trunk from Race to Penstock. Maggie’s hyp is very Painfull. Tuesday, May 25 Weather warm. All at work on new Mill Fore bay & saw Mill. I was alone in the store all day. I wrote to W.L. Williams and sent Deed. Maggie is a little better. Wednesday, May 26 Weather pleasant. I am alone in the store most of the time now, Raised the saw Mill today & finished the trunk to the Penstock. Maggie is still very complaining. Thursday, May 27 Weather cloudy all day & some rain early this morning & late in the evening. We let water on the new wheel for the first time today 1 & 2 O’clock works very satisfactory. We want to get the saw to running in about 8 or 10 days. Friday, May 28 Weather pleasant. I went to Balto. today. Engaged Irons for saw Mill & Saw and saw set paid 7.25 for the saw. Returned in the evening. Family all well except Maggie. Saturday, May 29 Weather quite warm. We are working about the saw part of the mill. Perry & John finished a new bridge acrost the race next to the old Mill. I worked about the Mill part of today. Sunday, May 30 Weather quite warm. Sabbath school as usual. We had our Organ today. Preaching in the afternoon & Prayer meeting at night. Maggie is still suffering very much. Monday, May 31 Weather quite warm thunder storm in the evening. I worked all day about the saw Mill with Jacob & Wm. Derr. Maggie still very bad. Tuesday, June 1 Weather cloudy part of the day. Jacob went to Harford today. I was alone in the store all day. I went to Balto. to make some arraingements and get my Ticket for California in the afternoon. I went out to see J.S. Bowen. He loned me 200$ to go on. I returned and went to my Lodge and payed in 20.90 to be reinstated. Friday, November 5 Weather quite pleasant. Bought my Ticket for San Francisco paid 147.75. Got through what other business I had and returned in the evening. Got my Life insured for 1 month 5000$ leave the Policy with Sallie. Saturday, November 6 Weather pleasant. Business tolerable good. I got ready today to start to California tomorrow eve if the Fast Line stops for me. I am going out alone to try and settle up my affares. I leave my Family at home, Hood’s Mill, B&O R.R. Sunday, November 7 Weather cool & Cloudy. Sabbath school in the morning. Took Dinner with Sister Eliza. With my Family all the evening. After Tea I bid farewell to all and started for Sykesville & left at eleven for California. Monday, November 8 Arrived at Cumberland this morning daylight. Weather cold & some snow on the ground. Stoped long enough to get a bite & then left again. Arrived at Belair about 4 PM. Took the train from there to Columbus, Ohio arrived there about midnight continued on my way by Columbus Chicago Indiana R.R. Tuesday, November 9 Chicago arrived there about 2 PM. Weather cloudy snowing a little find Chicago a very Business place & very large City. I am now waiting here for the Train to Omaha starts at 9 this evening. Stoping at the Hatch House. Wednesday, November 10 I started last night from Chicago at 10.15. Arrived at council Bluffs about 10 at night. Stoped there at the Pacifick Hotell. Weather quite pleasant untill the afternoon commenced snowing. Came through by N. Western R.R. Thursday, November 11 At Omaha weather pleasant but cool very little snow on the ground. Leave for San Francisco at 10 this morning. Find the cars & Bord very good. Found the Country we pased through today good Farming Country. Feal very well. Friday, November 12 We are now about commencing to assend the Rockey Mountains. Weather cool & some snow on the ground. We made promontory at 6.25 this evening. Find the weather here more pleasant than other side Rockey Mountains. Left here about 7 O’clock evening. Saturday, November 13 I got a pretty good nights rest last night. We made good headway all day down the Humbolt & did not leave the sink(?) untill after night. No axidents yet. All the pasingers well. Its not good in the sleeping car. Sunday, November 14 Weather continues very pleasant. No snow in the vallie. We are still making good time. Country very Baren every since we started the Rockey Mountains. The stations on the way are built very good. All well. Monday, November 15 Weather very pleasant. Arrived at Marysville about 4 this afternoon. Saw matters & things looking very well. Saw a great many of my old acquaintances all glad to see me. Had a very pleasant trip over. Tuesday, November 16 Weather quite pleasant. I am now in Marysville feal quite lonely. I got a job at Yuba City superintending the Brick work on the Masonick Hall. Six Dollars a day. Wednesday, November 17 Weather quite warm. I took a job superintending the Masonic hall at Yuba City 6 Dollars a day Gold. Yuba City is improveing very much. Find my old friends here very glad to see me. I am quite lonely want to see my Family. Thursday, November 18 Weather quite warm. I am still at work at Yuba City. Feal very anxious to see my Family I am quite homesick. Friday, November 19 Weather continues quite warm. I am still working at Yuba City. I have been quite unwell the last week. Marysville looks about the same but still sickley here. Saturday, November 20 Weather continues quite warm. I am still superintending the Masonic Hall at Yuba City at 6 Dollars per day coin. I am trying to sell out here. Have an offer for one of our Houses. Feal anxious to sell so I can get home. I am quite unwell. Sunday, November 21 Weather quite pleasant. I was at our Church all day. Bro. Barnes Seminarian(?) Preached in the morning & the Pastor Preached in the evening. He leaves us after next Sabbath for San Diego. I am not well. Monday, November 22 Weather continues quite pleasant out. I am still working at Yuba City getting along very well. I am very homesick. How I long to be with my Family. Tuesday, November 23 Weather quite windy. I am still working at Yuba City. Mr. McCallom agreed to take the 2 story House on 5th St. at 1500$ Gold today. I promised to let him have it. I am fealing a little better today. Anxious about home. Wednesday, November 24 Weather windy. Worked all day at Yuba City. Today I am 41 years old. Rec 2 letters from Sallie this eve. She and the children are well but very anxious for me to come home. Thursday, November 25 Weather quite windy & cool. I am still at Yuba City. I am very anxious to get ready to get back to my Family. Friday, November 26 Weather not quite so windy today nights cool but no frost of any account. Everything is looking green. Gardens are looking nicely. I am still at Yuba City superintending the Brick work. Saturday, November 27 Weather quite pleasant. I am still at Yuba City. The Cars are in sight on the Valeyjo R.R. from the Building. Soon will be finished up to the River. I am still fealing very lonely without my Family. Sunday, November 28 Weather quite pleasant. At Church & Sabbath School in the morning. Mr. Lafferty Preached his farewell sermon. Took a walk in the afternoon to the Grave Yard. Evening a Sabbath School consert & wrote to Sallie. Monday, November 29 Weather pleasant. Worked all day at Yuba City. Nights cool. Trying to sell my property. Have some offers have not sold yet. Saw Mrs. Thompson this eve about House on D St. offered it at 1800$. No objection to price but wants time. Tuesday, November 30 Weather pleasant except a little windy in the afternoon. I am still at Yuba City The Vallajo & Marysville Railroad is in running order as far as Yuba City now. I am fealing very lonely being away from my Family. Wednesday, December 1 Weather about the same as yesterday. Worked all day. Have agreed to sell one of my Houses on 5th St for 1500$. Cosed me about 3500$. I am fealling very anxious to hear from my Family. Thursday, December 2 Weather continues quite pleasant except windy part of the day and still dry. We have had no rain since my arrival here. I am still working in Yuba City. My health is very good now. Friday, December 3 Weather continues pleasant not so much wind today. I had the Deed of my House on 5th St made out this evening & sent it to Sallie to be signed. I sell it for 1500$ very cheap. I received a letter from Sallie. Saturday, December 4 Weather very pleasant. I am still working at Yuba City getting along very well with the Hall. Expect to get through there next week. Spent the evening with William Hays. I am still Rooming with him. Sunday, December 5 Weather very pleasant. At Sabbath school & Church morning & eve. At our Church in the morning and at the M.E. and Presbyterian at night. Billie Hays & I took a walk out to see the Origuise(?) Bridge across the feather River Monday, December 6 Weather continues very pleasant little frost at night. I am still at Yuba City on the Masonic Hall getting along very well. I rec. a letter from J. S. Bowen. Finished my letter to Sallie. Tuesday, December 7 Weather continues about the same. Still working at the same place. R. Roading is still very lively about Marysville. I spent the eve at home, writing home. I am fealing very anxious to see my Family. Wednesday, December 8 Weather Cloudy most all day. Rained last night & part of this morning. We did not go to work untill 9. We are getting along very well with the building. I rec 2 letters from Sallie. [--] Card from the Lodge. Commenced a letter to Sallie. Thursday, December 9 Weather quite pleasant today. Rained quite hard last night but was clear this morning. We worked all day on the Hall at Yuba City. I rec a letter from J. S. Bowen. Finished my letter to Sallie. Friday, December 10 Weather cloudy part of the day. We worked all day. Want to try & get through tomorrow. Getting along very well dont feal quite so homesick now as I did but would like to see my Family. Saturday, December 11 Weather pleasant. Cloudy in the morning but cleared off without any rain, wind got around to the North. Did not get through today quite. Rec a letter from my Wife all pretty well Sallie has a cold. Evening cool. I am still rooming with Billie Hays. Sunday, December 12 Weather pleasant. A little cool at Church & Sabbath School in the morning out at Presbytearen Church at night. Went out in the afternoon as far as Mr. Eaton’s with W. Hays and Mr. Rhees & old friend. Monday, December 13 Weather pleasant. I finished the Brick work of the Masonic hall at Yuba City at noon today. Afternoon I helped to figure up the Brick work. Evening commenced a letter to Sallie. My health is good. Tuesday, December 14 Weather pleasant. I got through at noon today at the Hall & promised to do some work for Seward. Afternoon fixed the Roof of my house on D. St. Evening finished a letter to My Wife and rec a letter from Friend Williams South San Diego. Wednesday, December 15 Weather very pleasant. I worked all day for Tom Seward on High Street between 3rd and 4th Streets. Feal very tired tonight. Rec a letter this eve from Sallie. She and the children are all well. Made 23½ days at Yuba City 6$. Thursday, December 16 Weather continues quite pleasant. Nights are a little frosty & cold going to work in the morning. I am still working for Seward. Dont feal satisfied working jorney for another man. Friday, December 17 Weather continues about the same. Still working at the same place. Try to Keep at work I can pass away the time more pleasant. Rec a letter from my Wife. They are all well. Saturday, December 18 Weather pleasant. We finished up the story about 3 this afternoon. Will be idle for a day or so. Saw Warren Smith today my old Molder. He is looking about the same living 14 miles from Coulusa. I am well. Sunday, December 19 Weather quite cool. At Sabbath School & Preaching in the morning at our Church & at the Presbytearen Church in the evening. Monday, December 20 Weather quite cold considerable ice about this morning. I did not work today I sold J. S. Bowen’s House on C St today to Mrs. Reardon for 800$. Sent the Deed home to Bowen tonight. Tuesday, December 21 Weather continues quite cool more ice this morning. I went to work for Seward this morning on 4th St. corner of High. Rec. a letter from my Wife & sent her a letter all well. Wednesday, December 22 Weather still cold at nights. We had considerable ice this morning & could be seen in the shade all day. Went to work at 9 again this morning too cold to go sooner. Rec a letter from Sallie. Thursday, December 23 Weather wet all day pretty much but I worked all day. Finished up the job on the Ally & 4th St. & Built a chimney in Walches House. Rec a letter from Jacob & John E. Dorsey. I am very well but feal very unsettled in a business point of view. Friday, December 24 Weather quite wet all last night & today. I worked all day at Ross store putting in an arch to throw the back store all in one Room. I feal very unsettled today. Evening went to our S. School Christmas tree. Good time. Saturday, December 25 Weather quite wet all day. It rained & blew all last night. We went to the Catholic Church at Midnight meeting. Got home about 2 this morning. Spent the day with Hays, Rhees & Winedot. Rec a letter from Sallie & answered it. Sunday, December 26 Weather cool. At our church & Sabbath School in the morning & at our Monthly consert in the evening. Monday, December 27 Weather pleasant but cool. I worked all day at Ross’ store on D. Street. Rec. a letter from My Wife. Eve wrote to Jacob. My Family all well. Tuesday, December 28 Weather cool but pleasant. I worked all day morning at Ross & afternoon at new School House on E. Street. Have not much to do now. I am very well. Wednesday, December 29 Weather clear & cool. I did not have anything to do today but was busy in the afternoon. Sold my House on the corner of 5th & F St. to Mr. McDerment for 1300$. Forward the Deed to Sallie to be signed by her. I went to Prayer meeting in the morning. Thursday, December 30 Weather pleasant but it was frosty last night. I did not work today had nothing to do. Went around to look at some of my Lots. Wrote to Sallie in the eve. Also rec a letter from her. All well Friday, December 31 Weather pleasant. Doing nothing today. I am still in Marysville and my Family at Hood’s Mill, Carroll Co. Md. I am Happy to say as far as I Know the going out of the old year finds us all well & I feal to thank the Good Lord for it & Pray that He may continue to Bless us in the comeing year as in the past. I am very anxious to get with my Family as soon as posible.
