Church & Sabbath School as usual. Sallie went in the evening to preaching. I stayed home. Bro. Knight of San Francisco still preaching for us. We had an answer from Bro. Rhees but declines the call. The New Year finds me with my Family in Marysville living in my House on D. St. and happy to say that we are all well and pray that the good Lord will Bless us and Keep us through this year and findly gather us all to himself for the Redeemer’s sake. Amen Monday, January 2 Weather quite unpleasant. North wind blew most all day. I worked all day at Mr. Ward’s on 8th St near J St. Work is very slack with me but very little work doing at present. We are having a very dry winter so far. Ranchers are complaining very much for the want of rain. I am thinking some of making brick in the Spring at Colusa. I spent most of my eve at home. I wrote to Selby last eve. This Diary was a present from the Sabbath School taken from the Christmas Tree. All well except Sallie she is complaining some. Tuesday, January 3 Weather continues dry & cool at nights. I finished my job at Mr. Ward’s on 8th St. about 9 this morning. Went agunning Charlie & I the balance of the day got 1 Duck & 3 birds. Game appears scarce no water being on the plains. We are haveing a very dry winter and am afraid if so times will be very hard in Cal. next summer. But we must learn to trust in the Lord and if we do our part it will be well for us. Work is very scarce and I have nothing to do at present. At home all the evening reading. Family all well thanks be to the good Lord. Wednesday, January 4 Weather continues about the same. I have nothing to do today. Looked around town in the forenoon but found nothing to do. Afternoon I went to a funeral a man by the name of Wright partner of Robert Stoops in the Pork Packing business and a member of our Lodge I.O.O.F. took his one life shot himself in the head. A very sad afare but no Relatives there. I am getting no letters from home and getting very anxious to here from there. Evening went to prayer meeting & also business meeting. Squared up for the old years. Thursday, January 5 Weather continues quite dry & cold at nights with frost. Times is getting very dull on account of the dry winter. I am very fearfull that if we dont have rain soon that nothing will be done in the Building line this year. I dont know what to get at. I have nothing to do now and very little prospects for any. I have been looking around but dont see anything to do and it goes very hard with me not being ust to being idle. Evening we all went to prayer meeting. Haveing very good meetings. Family all well. Friday, January 6 Weather continues dry & cool with no appearance of rain. Farmers are complaining cant plow very little grain sewed yet. That what is sewed cant grow. May the good Lord send us rain. Spend most of my time walking about. Nothing to do. Family all well. Evening at the prayer meeting. We are haveing very good meetings. Some indications of sucsess. We expect Katie Butler a young Ladie that is stoping with us will join. She has hopes that she is converted. We all hope so. Saturday, January 7 Weather continues the same cool & dry. Charlie & I went out gunning early this morning did not get anything. Got back about 3 in the afternoon. Ducks & Gees are getting very shy & I am not a very good shot. It appears very dull about Town. I am still out of work and the time appears hard to fill up. I am spending my evenings at the prayer meetings not very many present but had a very good meeting. Our members dont come out as they should. Family all well. Sunday, January 8 Weather continues dry. I was at Church & Sabbath School in the morning. Sallie went in the evening with some of the children. One has to stay home. The Rev. J. B. Knight is still Preaching for us. We may give him a Call but some dont think it best. I like him very well. We expect him to stay with us this winter dont know what will be done in the Spring. Bro. Reese has desided not to come Our little Church is very well attended and also the Sabbath School. Family all well. Monday, January 9 Weather threatening rain in the morning and commenced to rain about 1 o’clock in the afternoon. It is very much needed and everybody appears glad to see it. W.B. Hays came after me this morning to Estimate on some Brickwork one job here and one job at Princeton Colusa Co. school house may get them to do. Work is very scarce at present and I am very anxious to get to work. Being idle goes very hard with me Especially at present. I rec. a letter from Perry Johnson this eve. Family all well. Tuesday, January 10 Weather cloudy but no more rain cleared up last night. We ought to be very thankfull for what we have had but we have not Enough yet to do a great deal of good yet it will help. We are in hopes we will have more soon. I am not doing anything. Nothing to do but liveing in hopes that something will turn up soon. I find that being idle goes very hard with me not being ust to it and at present I realy need work as that is what I am depending upon. Family all well. Wednesday, January 11 Weather clear but cool but with little sign of rain. Everybody appears fearfull that we will have a dry winter and that will make hard times next year or this next summer. Good crops now a days insures good times in Cal. It is not like it ust to be when the Mines were paying so good. We have to look to the Agricultural interests now a days to insure good times. I am still idle. I spend most of my time going about seeing if I can here of anything. Everything is dull. All well. Thursday, January 12 Weather feals a little like rain but wind from the North and quite cold. Had heavy frost and some ice last night. I was summoned to Court as a Trial Juror today but object to on account of not being long enough in the State since my return to be elagible. I spent most of the morning in the Court room. Attended to some little affares at home in the afternoon. Evening Sallie & the Children went to a sociable held at Sister Trainer’s. I remained at home with Willie. All well. Friday, January 13 Weather clear it has cleared off without rain but we are in hopes that we will have aplenty yet, if not crops will be short next season. I am still without work and prospects rather bad at present. I find it quite a task to put in the time. I am liveing in hopes that something will turn up soon. Expect a job soon over to Princeton about 12 miles above Colusa on the Sacramento River but will have to do it low. Family all well. Saturday, January 14 Weather warm after the sun got up. The nights continue cool and frosty. Charlie & I went out gunning today gone most all day got 3 ducks and 1 quail. I saw a great many ducks but they are very shy and I am not very good on the wing. I have gunned more since my return to the state than I ever did before while in the country. Evening I went to the rehearsal at our Church. Family continues quite well. Sunday, January 15 Weather continues quite pleasant. At Church & Sabbath School in the morning. At Church again in the evening. Congregation very good and also the S. School. Bro. Knight is still preaching for us and is very well liked by the Congregation but I dont think he will get a Call. I like him very well and think that Mr. Knight would suit us very well if he would stay with us. Family all very well. Sallie is complaining some. Monday, January 16 Weather pleasant but no appearance of rain. Most of the farmers as far as I can here putting in there grain those that can plow. We may have aplenty of rain yet between now and Spring. I am about Town all day. I am still idle but most of the inhabitants appear to be doing something. Being away so long I have lost the run of the work and so many strangers have come here since I have been away. Family all well. Tuesday, January 17 Weather cloudy and quite wet part of the day & rained quite hard after dark. I worked most all day putting down a curb and haveing corner of D & 6th St and done it for McDonald. I have some more work to do tomorrow at Mrs. Poston’s. Got wet today and do not feal very well tonight. Stayed at home all the evening. Feal very anxious to get at something more purmanent. I find my business much duller than I expected. Family all well. Wednesday, January 18 Weather quite pleasant a little cloudy part of the day but no rain. Am in prospects that we will have more soon as it is much needed. I worked all day at Mrs. Poston’s building a Chimney. I have work now for a few days. We are still using the Splint of Maggie but not the Crutch nor has she used it for the last 2 or 3 months. She dont want to use it. She is probably as well without it now—she dont complain any. All well. Thursday, January 19 Weather foggy in the morning & cloudy & cool but no rain. I finished the Chimney at the Poston’s got through at noon. Fixed my curb and sidewalk this afternoon in front of my House on D. St. I have one or two small jobs on hand now to do. About make a living now is all that I can do. Hope that times will get better soon. At home all the evening. Family all well. Sallie complains some but keeps going. Friday, January 20 Weather quite foggy and damp in the morning. I sat Mrs. Poston’s Marble Mantle and sat the grate took me all day. I feal very unsettled yet. Dont know what would be the best to get at in the Spring. Think some to try and get some one to go in with me and build a Mill in Yuba City. Would do it myself if I had the means to do it with. Think it would be good property, pay well—fraid I wont be able. Family all well. Saturday, January 21 Weather quite foggy all the morning. I started out gunnin about 9. Returned about 4 afternoon got nothing. Saw a great many ducks & quail but did not get anything. Charlie went with me. If I could shoot on the wing I could get plenty of game but it appears that I cant learn. I rec a letter from Selby. He wants me to buy out Jacob as he wants to go West. I wish I was able to do so. Family well. Evening went to the rehearsal. Sunday, January 22 Weather pleasant in the morning but clouded up and commenced to rain in the afternoon. At Church & Sabbath School as usual. We had quite a good turn out at the school today. I had about 7 or 8 in my Class today. Most all my schollars were present. Bro. Barnes makes a very good superintendent. Bro. Eaton 1st assistant acted in his place today. Sallie did not get out today. Family all well. Maggie is getting along very well but is still quite lame wares the splint. Monday, January 23 Weather quite pleasant all day today. Rained some last night. It is just the weather we need now for the Country but still need more. But the good Lord knows what we need what is best for us. I spent the day looking about. Work is quite scarce at present but I have some to do in a day or so. I had a job to do today at the Sisters but will have to wate untill it clears off. I have several jobs in contimplation or the promise of just as soon as they are ready. Tuesday, January 24 Weather continues damp and is quite muddy but did not rain much today. Did not do anything today too muddy to commence at the Sisters. Spent the time looking around. I went in my old Lodge (Yuba) joined by Card spent a very pleasant evening. The Lodge is getting along very well. The hall room is looking very fine one of the best Halls in the State. I saw the Trustees of the German M. E. Church this eve about the balance of my Bill. Wednesday, January 25 Weather quite pleasant today. John Curtis & I commenced the job at the Sisters today and worked there all day. They have a very large school. They have a full size block now and all walled in with a Brick fence. When they first started there they commenced in two Frame buildings on the corner of C & 7th St. They are still standing there and accompanyed by a school for small boys. Evening Sallie & I went to the prayer meeting. Had a very good meeting this evening. Thursday, January 26 Weather quite pleasant. We finished at the Sisters at noon today. Afternoon was looking after some more work I have to do will be ready in a day or so. I rec. a long letter last evening from Sam. They are all well home at present and doing very well. But things there is somewhat unsettled. Dont know what I will have to do. Jacob wants to sell out & go west. I would like to be able to buy him out it is good property. All well. Friday, January 27 Weather cloudy & wet the after part of the day. I did not do anything today nothing ready. Have a job to do tomorrow at Williams, Cal. I have 2 or 3 other jobs to do as soon as they get ready. Have a front to put in for Tom Salaway on D. St adjoining the 2 one story Stores corner of D. and 4th St. The buildings Bowen & I built several years ago for P. Duck. Family all well. Sallie rec a letter from Ann. Saturday, January 28 Weather cloudy & wet most of the forenoon rained all last night just the weather we need for the Ranchers. They are getting in there crops now as fast as they can and the prospects are very good now for good crops this season. The State is depending more now on the crops raised in the state than anything else as the mines is something giving out. I built a fireplace today for Col. Williams. Family all well. Sunday, January 29 Weather quite pleasant. At Church & Sabbath School in the morning. Sallie went in the evening. I stayed at home. We had quite a large school this morning the largest we have had for a long time numbered about 100 Teachers and all. Charlie & I took a walk over to Yuba City. Stoped and saw Jerry Revere at the Steamboat Landing. While we were there the Steamboat came up. Jerry is watchman there. Family all well. Monday, January 30 Weather quite pleasant but the nights are cool. I went to work today at Mr. Larances the old Presbyterian Parsinage the house John Burbee had built. Mr. Larance has recently bought it. I am fixing up the front. Seward has the job not very much to do. There is nothing doing excepting jobing but there is some prospects of work in the Spring. I am in a quandary what to do. Fraid to get in business on account of the unsettled conditions of my affares at home. Family all well. Tuesday, January 31 Weather pleasant. I worked all day finished at Mr. Larances about 3 then went to work at Duplex on 5th St. under pining the frame House. I expect that I will be quite busy now for a while jobing and building foundations for Row Houses for Wm. C. Swain. I took a job from W.B. Hays at Princeton to build a 2 story School House & agreed to lay there Brick by the thousand. Evening our Church held a prayer meeting at our house. Had quite a good meeting. Family all well. Wednesday, February 1 Weather quite pleasant but the nights are still cool and frosty we finished at Duplex about 9. Got a job ready the balance of the day at the old Eldorado for Hays in about 2 or 3 days. Every little helps now as I want to turn my rent of the Mills to go to paying off debts. I have no income now except that. We still owe the House we live in & some outside Lots. Evening went to prayer meeting good attendance and very good meeting. Family all well. Thursday, February 2 Weather quite pleasant. Frost last night getting late for frost. Makes it bad for the pore Stock. A great many in this State do not provide for there stock in the winter season. A great deal of stock have died this winter for want of something to eat. I worked all day at the old Eldorado on D St. fixing it up for a scateing Rink. It is a new sport in this country the first of its kind in this place. Hays has the contract. At home all the evening. All well. Friday, February 3 Weather quite pleasant. I finished my job for Hays today. Took 2500 Bricks 300# Line and load sand Tender 1½ Days, Bricklayer 2¼ Days. I worked very hard to get it done. I expect I will be very busy next week putting in foundation walls for Messres Willie & Swain for 4 Houses on E. St. At home all the evening. Got ready to go gunning in the morning. Charlie is so anxious to go. He goes all the week to school. Family all well. Saturday, February 4 Weather cloudy & wet most of the day. Charlie & I went gunning started early this morning got back about noon. Got 3 Ducks 3 Robbins. Did not see many Ducks today and the geese are flying very high. I am getting quite fond of gunning. Game is very poor about here. Game from the [--] is much fatter than about Marysville. Spending my evening at home. Went to the Post Office but did not get anything. Jacob do not write me. All well. Sunday, February 5 Weather cloudy but no rain quite muddy. At Church and Sabbath School in the morning. Sallie went in the evening. I stayed about home most all day reading. Rev. J. B. Knight is still preaching for us but we are expecting to give Rev. Ludlow a Call. I hope he will suit us if he comes. Monday, February 6 Weather wet & cloudy all day. Could not do anything today. I have work as soon as it is ready on E. St. for Swain & Willie & also a job setting an Engine at the Plazie Mills Shields & Bingham Properties. Work is quite brisk at present but all light work. Family all well. I wrote to Bro. Williams this evening San Diego. Tuesday, February 7 Weather continues cloudy & wet. I commenced my job at the Palzie Mills about there all day. Evening I went to the Lodge. A.P. Burrels(?) was initiated tonight. Family all well. Wednesday, February 8 Weather cloudy part of the day. I worked all day at the Mills building the foundation for the Engine. Came for me to go to the job on E. St. Tomorrow will have to try and go. Evening went to prayer meeting. We gave the Rev. Ludlow a Call. Family all well. Thursday, February 9 Weather cloudy in the morning and rained some. I went to work again at the Mills but stoped at 9 and went to work at Willies and Swain. They did not want me to leave them at the Mill but I promised Swain I would work there when they got ready. Evening at home. Family all well. Friday, February 10 Weather quite pleasant. I worked all day at Willies & Swain. I felt very tired this evening. Work goes very hard with me. I find I cannot stand to work like I ust to. Family all well. Saturday, February 11 Weather quite pleasant. We worked all day at the same place E. St. It is quite lively down Town this eve. The scateing Rink opened this evening. I took a look through the window. Quite a crowd inside. I had my hare cut this eve. Family all well. Sunday, February 12 Weather pleasant. At Church & Sabbath school as usual. The Rev. Ludlow rec a Call for the Month of March at his request from our Church. Family all well. Monday, February 13 Weather pleasant but has the appearance of Rain. I worked all day at Swain’s building. Got through there. Work is quite slack very little doing. All well. Tuesday, February 14 Weather wet most all day. Done nothing today. Evening went to the Lodge. Family well. Wednesday, February 15 Weather wet & cloudy all day & cool. I am still idle spend my time looking around. Did do a little job this morning for W.B. Hays at the Skateing Rink. Evening went to prayer meeting had quite a good meeting. Family all well. Thursday, February 16 Weather cool & clear frost most every night. I am still idle but spend my time looking around for work. I am expecting some work soon. Family all well. Friday, February 17 Weather quite pleasant. Mr. Alexander came over to see me this morning from Yuba City to get my bid on a two story building of Brick. I gave it to him this afternoon. The building figures 64,500. I bid it at 900$ for Brickwork & Excavation. Evening at Home. Family all well. Thanks to the good Lord. Saturday, February 18 Weather warm & pleasant. Charlie & I went gunning. Got 2 Hairs & some small game returned about 4 in the afternoon. I have nothing to do at present. Family all well. Sunday, February 19 Weather quite pleasant. At Church & Sabbath School in the morning. Sallie went to Church in the evening. I remained at home to take care of the Children. Monday, February 20 Weather wet all day commenced in the night. Nothing to do I spend part of my leasure time at the Plazie Mill. Family all well. Tuesday, February 21 Weather not settled yet. Had a very blow blow (sic) last night and thundered some. It did considerable damage. Blew down several houses or parcialy so. Rained again in the evening. Evening went to the Lodge. Dr. Tegarden was to see me today. Wants me to go in with him to build a Mill in Yuba City. Went over there to see a Lot would like to do so but am fraid that I am not able to do so at present. Family all well. Wednesday, February 22 Weather pleasant a little cool & windy. Dr. Tegarden was to see me again this morning. I declined haveing anything to do with the Mill at present. I went to work in the afternoon for Dick Wimple at Mr. Saxey’s on 5th St. Evening Sallie & I went to prayer meeting. not many out but had a very good meeting. All well. Thursday, February 23 Weather cloudy & wet most all day. Rained quite hard all the afternoon. I did not do anything today. Bad evening for our Social. Family all well. Friday, February 24 Weather quite pleasant today but the nights are cool frost most every night. I worked this afternoon at Saxey’s on 5th St for Wimple. I got a job to do this afternoon at the Oregon Depot on A St. for the Company. Commenced it in the morning. Evening wrote a letter to George. Family all well. Saturday, February 25 Weather quite pleasant. I worked all day at the Depot on A St. am quite busy now have more work to do for Wimple. Evening at Home. Family all well. Sunday, February 26 Weather quite pleasant. At Sabbath School & Church all day. This is the last Sabbath Mr. Knight is expected to be with us. The Rev Ludlow is expected to be with us next Sabbath & to remain with us. Family all well. Monday, February 27 Weather quite pleasant. I finished my job at the C.P.R.R. Ticket Office at noon today. Went to work then for Wimple at Mrs Murdock’s new House on the Planes. Bender is doing the work. It is to be a Frame House with Brick cellar & foundation. Evening at home. Family all well. Tuesday, February 28 Weather continues quite pleasant. I worked at the same place all day. We got through with the Cellar & foundation. Chimneys to be built yet. Baldwin wants me to go to the Grave Yard tomorrow to do some work there. Wimple is furnishing the Brick. Evening at home. Family all well. Wednesday, March 1 Weather quite windy & cool all day. I worked all day in the Grave Yard building a foundation for Mr. Baulding’s Family. It is to be granite above the foundation. Evening went to prayer meeting not many present. Family all well. Thursday, March 2 Weather more pleasant today. I finished the job at the Grave Yard. I worked quite hard I layed the Brick in Morter & cement. I ordered granate curbing for my House on D. St. where I am living. It is to be delivered at Marysvile at 95 cts per running foot. Family all well. Friday, March 3 Weather pleasant. I commenced to set a Range in the new Building next to the Odd Fellows Hall for Seward. It is to be a Plate House. Evening at Home. Family all well. Saturday, March 4 Weather quite pleasant. I worked all day at the Range and got it finished. McDonald wants me to go to work next week with him on Willis & Swain building on E. St. I promised to do so. The Rev. J. T. Ludlow arrived today. Family all well. Sunday, March 5 Weather cloudy & wet part of today. Rev. J. T. Ludlow preached for us today. Everybody appeared to be well pleased with him. I like him very much. He has his Room with us. We had a very good Congregation morning & evening & also good S. School. Family all well. Monday, March 6 Weather quite windy & some rain this afternoon. I worked all day morning at Wimple’s job at the House Bender is building out the Plains. I had to beg off at Swain’s houses but went to work for him this afternoon. Evening at home & rec. a letter from Selby and wrote him. Family all well at home. Tuesday, March 7 Weather more pleasant today. I am at work at Willies and Swain with McDonald. Evening at home. Family all well. Wednesday, March 8 Weather pleasant. I am still working at the same place. I am not fealing very well the rest of the family are all well. Evening Sallie & I went to prayer meeting. We had three ministers with us, our Pastor and the Rev. Balding and Richardson the latter brought our Bible the one Rev. Knight ordered for us cost 14$. Thursday, March 9 Weather continues pleasant. I am still busy at Swain’s row of Houses. Family all well. Evening at home. Friday, March 10 Weather quite pleasant. I am still working at the same place. Family all well. Evening at home. Saturday, March 11 Weather quite pleasant. I worked all day ½ day at Swain’s building and ½ day repairing his Boiler. I went to see about some work at the Buckeye Mills this eve. I rec a letter from S. S. Spaulding his children is sick. We are all well. Sunday, March 12 Weather rather changeable and quite windy part of the afternoon & some rain fell. We were at Church morning & evening and Sabbath School at noon. Bro. Ludlow preached for us. Everybody appears very much pleased with him. We are fearfull that he will not stay with us longer than this Month. Family all well. Monday, March 13 Weather pleasant. I worked all day for Swain part of the time at his Boiler and the remander of the day at Mr. Willis house on D. St. arching a well. Evening went to see about the job at the Buckeye Mills will know tomorrow who will do it. Family all well. Tuesday, March 14 Weather pleasant. I worked all day for Wimple at the House Bender is building out on the plains. I went twice again to see about the Mill job but I did not get it. Seward beat me at 12$ per M I offered to do it for 13$. Expected to get the brick of Dick Wimple. Evening I ordered 40-3 feet more of stone curbing for Mr. Willies House on D. St. comes at 95 cts per foot delivered here. I am going to put it in front of my house. Wednesday, March 15 Weather pleasant. I did not work today nothing ready. Work is quite slack very little doing. It goes very hard with me to be idle. Evening Charlie & I went afishing but did not catch anything most too soon. Evening I went to prayer meeting. Quite a good turn out. Our Pastor is away. All well. Thursday, March 16 Weather pleasant. I worked all day at the Swain’s shop repairing the Boiler haveing it all overhalled, had some boiler makers from San Francisco. Tryed it this eve put on 105 lbs stood it well. Evening at home. Sallie went to the M. E. Church prayer meeting with Katie Buttler. All well. Friday, March 17 Wheater quite pleasant. I worked all day at Mr. Swain’s Shop Repairing the Boiler. I rec two letters this eve one from Bowen and one from George. I answered Bowen’s. Family all well. Saturday, March 18 Weather pleasant all the foreneoon. I was busy all the morning getting ready to start to San Francisco on my way to San Diego. I left Marysville at 1 o’clock by Vallejo R. Road. Arrived in San Francisco about 8 in the evening. Expect to leave for San Diego in the morning. I am going down to see what prospects there is in the Brick business with a view to locating if favourable. Stoping at the What Cheer House. Left all well. Sunday, March 19 At San Francisco. Weather foggy & wet rained in the morning. I started on the Steamer California this morning at about 10 o’clock to San Diego. The steamer was quite crowded with pasingers & freight. I could not get a Burth fair to San Diego, Cabin 5$. Owing to opposition it is quite low, 25$ before the opposition. It was quite rough out and a good many got sea sick. I did not. It was so foggy we could not see the land. Monday, March 20 Out at sea on the Steamer Cal. Weather quite foggy most all day. We came in sight of Point Conseption about noon today and stoped at Santa Barbara about dark. We kept in sight of land after leaving Point Conseption lite house. The hills appears to have a little grass on them but very little. We all got along very pleasantly today. Some of the pasingers is still sick. I keep well so far. Tuesday, March 21 Weather pleasant. We arrived at San Pedro the landing for Los Angeles. Remained there all day and did not get away untill about 12 tonight unloading Pasingers & freight & also took on some pasingers for San Diego. They have to unload our Lighters out in deep water. Some of the pasingers caught some fish while waiting. It is so rough here some times the ship can not stop. Pasingers all well. Wednesday, March 22 Weather quite pleasant. We arrived at San Diego at 10 this morning. I was quite pleased with the harber and the appearances of things in general. After landing I went direct to see W. L. Williams found him & Mr. Amos Shelinburg at the Mill. They were quite well and glad to see me. Lunched with Shelinburg and took Diner at 4 with Williams. Evening we went to prayer meeting. had quite a pleasant little Church to meet in. Thursday, March 23 Weather quite cool for me, but quite pleasant. I looked about all the forenoon with Bro. Williams. I find Clay quite scarce about to make Brick. They are making brick but not very good. Wood is very scarce it sells for about 10$ per cord. I think I could do very well here. Started back on the same steamer about 3 this afternoon, quite rough out but have not got sick yet. Friday, March 24 Weather quite pleasant. Arrived at Annie Hime early this morning. Remained there several hours takeing on freight and spent the balance of the day at San Pedro & all night takeing on freight and pasingers. Took on 500 sheep and considerable [--] & corn & [--]. It is quite rough loading and unloading from those Lighters. The surf runs quite high in here at times but quite favourable at present. Saturday, March 25 Weather pleasant. We left San Pedro or Los Angeles this morning after daylight. Had to leave some freight rather rough weather today. Arrived at San Barbara this eve took on pasingers and some freight left there after dark. Quite rough all night. The down steamer pased us at this place. We are getting along very well but a good many are sea sick but I am not. Sunday, March 26 Weather quite rough all last night & all day. Making very slow progress. Ran all day without stoping. We had no preaching on board but all appeared to observe the Sabbath except the hands that had to work. We are all well. Monday, March 27 Weather quite rough all day & all last night. Made very slow way last night. Had to put in at Santa Cruse ( or Holey Cross) to wood up & get some water. Arrived here about noon & left about sundown. It was not quite so rough this eve. Pasingers all keep well except sea sickness. The country looks much better about here than it has anywhere below this point aplenty of grass & timber. Tuesday, March 28 Weather quite pleasant. We arrived at San Francisco this morning about 6 0’clock. I got my breakfast and got abord the New World for Vallejo on my way to Marysville by [--] rought. Arrived at Home about 3 in the afternoon found all well for which I felt very greatfull. Have had 2 or 3 speak to me about work. My Curb arrived yesterday will put it down at once. All well. Wednesday, March 29 Weather rather disagreeable. North wind quite bad & is telling quite fearfully on the crops. My stone for the Curb in front of my House on D. St came this morning & I am making arraingements to put it down. It cosed me 95cts per running foot delivered at the house. Evening went to prayer meeting and we had a very good meeting & quite a good attendance. We all like Bro. Ludlow but he is going to leave us. Thursday, March 30 Weather cool & windy in the morning. I went over to Collusa & back today. I left the Note I hold against Col. Hutch with McGrath [--] in that place for collection but am afraid I never will get it. It is 315.00 barring 1½ per cent per month. Family all well. Friday, March 31 Weather quite pleasant out. I sat the curb this morning. It is the first stone curb in Marysville. Work is quite slack with me at present & prospects bad. I am very much at a loss to know what to do. Family all well. Saturday, April 1 Weather warm & dry. The farmers are very much in want of rain & the prospects are very bad at present for crops. I am still idle but expect to start a house on D. St for Curtis. All well. Sunday, April 2 Weather quite pleasant. We had quite a good time at the Church & Sabbath School today. It is the last day that bro. J.T. Ludlow expects to be with us & we had quite full attendance. We had 112 Ch the Sabbath school more than ever before. We are all very sorry to part with Bro. Ludlow but we cannot induce him to stay. All well. Monday, April 3 Weather cloudy & threatening rain. I made preperations to start for Red Bluff today. I am going up there to see what the prospects are for Brick making & laying. I started at 4 this afternoon on the Oregon Branch RR it only runs now as far as Cisco opposite Tehama on the Sacramento River. From there I took a stage to Red Bluff about 12 miles, about 90 miles from Marysville. Arrived about 11 O’ clock at night. Stoped at a Hotel and went to Bed. Tuesday, April 4 Weather cloudy and raining part of the day & quite cool. After breakfast this morning I walked around to see the Town. Am very much pleased with the little Town. Has the appearance once of a healthy place but I find that the future propensity of the place depends upon the Rail Roads comeing in and that at present is not known & a great many fear it will not. I was taken about 11 O’clock this morning with a very severe chill & fever & it lasted on me the remander of the day. I had to go to Bed. Wednesday, April 5 Weather cloudy & some rain fell. It is what we all want. I started home this morning from Redbluff about ½ past 1 this morning & arrived at home about 9 O’clock. But the weather being wet & I not being well I did not go to work. I have a House to build for John Curtis & promised to commence it today. Found my Family all well. Evening Sallie & I went to prayer meeting. Thursday, April 6 Weather still cloudy & wet. I started to go to work this morning but Curtis thought as it was wet, we had better work untill 9 O’clock but before that time I was sick abed with another chill & fever and had it very bad. Did not get out of my bed all day & suffered a great deal. Friday, April 7 Weather pleasant but no rain but still has the appearance of more rain. I started again to work this morning but Curtis thought I had better not try it for a day or so untill I got better so I went home & stayed in all day takeing my medicine but I am feverfull I will have another Chill tomorrow but I am trying to keep it [--]. Maggie is not well this afternoon fraid she has a Chill. Saturday, April 8 Weather clear & quite windy blowing from the North. I did not go out today it being my Chill day. We kept it off today so I think by good care & continuing the Medicine will get well. Maggie is quite unwell. Sunday, April 9 Weather pleasant. I was at Church & Sabbath School in the morning. Sallie went at night. A Bro. from Grass Valley Rev. J. A. Worth took Diner with us & occupped one of our Rooms. I am fealing better today think I will be able to go to work tomorrow. Maggie is quite unwell for the last day or so. The rest of the Family are quite well. Monday, April 10 Weather quite pleasant. I started a House this morning for John Curtis on D. St. just a few doors below where I live. I am doing it by the day. I dont feal very strong yet. I am still takeing medison. The rest of the Family are all well. Tuesday, April 11 Weather pleasant. I worked all day. I am working alone. He wants me to do all the Brickwork alone. Family all well. Wednesday, April 12 Weather quite pleasant. Worked all day & my back almost gave out. Evening I went to prayer meeting. Family all well. Thursday, April 13 Weather pleasant. I started to work this morning but had to return home my back hurt me so bad. It appears to grow worse had to go to bed. Friday, April 14 Weather pleasant. I am still in bed scarcely able to turn over in bed. All the misery appears to be in the small of my back. Nothing appears to releave it. Saturday, April 15 Weather pleasant. I am still very bad but I think I can move about the bed a little better than I did but are not able to walk or sit up yet. Sunday, April 16 Weather cloudy & wet all day. I could not get out to Church. I managed to get down stairs to my meals today but it was as much as I could do. Family all well. Monday, April 17 Weather wet most all day but did not rain very hard. I am not improveing very fast but can walk about the house a little but did not go out. All well except my self. Tuesday, April 18 Weather quite pleasant. I can not work yet. I took a walk out but my back is very sore & stiff. I am in hopes that I can get to work in a few days. I worked quite hard all day made a full week and feal very well considering that I have been so unwell for the last few weeks. All well. Sunday, April 30 Weather warm. I was at Church morning & evening & at Sabbath School after preaching in the morning. The Rev. Mr. Mortin addressed the School so we did not go through with the lesson. Our school is very well attended. We are all well except my self. I have one or 2 Boils on my back. Monday, May 1 Weather warm & dry. I worked all day on Curtis Building. I am getting along with the house being alone. Evening at home my back is much better now. Family well. Tuesday, May 2 Weather quite warm today I think the warmest of the season. Thursday, May 4 Weather cool & windy looks like rain & did sprinkle a little. I worked all day at Home in the evening. I had to go and see the Agent at the Cen. T. R.R. Co. a car load of curb arrived there yesterday for me from Wm. Quinn. I paid the freight which amounted to 22.50 Twenty-two 50/100 Dollars. Got Mr. Stratton to take 40 feet and Mr. Peris to take 20 feet our neighbor. The balance will have to put it on a Lot untill I can dispose of it. All well. Friday, May 5 Weather warm again today but not as warm as it has been. I worked all day. I am fealing very well now excepting I am fealing very tired after working all day. Willie was sick again today. Friday, May 19 Weather warm all day. I topped out J. Curtis today got through just a few minutes before 6 O’clock. He is very much pleased with it. It looks very well. It is a House of 9 good size Rooms with halls 2 Storys high. I layed all the brick alone. John Gaven attended me. Evening went to see what W.B. Hays wants me to do. John Gaven & I worked all day toping or raiseing the Chimneys on the Gingle Block. Got through with it. We have no Baptist Church I find in Chico & the Churches appear to be not very well attended. My back is still quite sore. I was with Fordham most the afternoon. Monday, July 3 Weather very hot. I did not go up to Chico yesterday Home with my family but had to leave them at 4 this afternoon & go back to Chico. Arrived there about 7. DeMott & I are rooming together & Boarding at Mrs. Congers 6$ for bord & 1.50 per week for Room. I left all well at home. I did not like to leave them. Thursday, July 6 Weather not so warm. We are getting along very well with the foundation of the Hall. The brick is very bad broke up in small pieces owing to the clay. The morter is quite good. We have all the foundation except the front & that is started. The foundation wall on the out side is 5 feet on the bottom [--] in to a 16 inch wall. I am still fealing quite well but very Home sick. We finished up the last of the foundation of the Hall today & commenced on the back wall. I am fealing very well today but I dont feal rite being away from my family. I feal very anxious to be with them as soon as possible. They are all well. I get letters most every day. Tuesday, July 11 Weather warm but not as warm as it has been last week. We worked all day on the Back wall. We are getting along very well. The brick is very much broken but the morter is first rate. I am fealing very well. My family is all pretty well the last I hered from them. Wednesday, July 12 Weather continues about the same but plenty warm Enough. All hands still working on the Hall. I find work goes much harder with me then it ust to. If I was able I would give it up. All well. Thursday, July 13 Weather warm but not as hot as it was about the first of the month. We are still working away on the Hall working 7 Bricklayers but the most of them are slow. Family all well last accounts. Friday, July 14 Weather warm. Everything goes along about as usual. We all went to work this morning on the first story. Expect to get it about up this week. I am fealing very well except boils they still give me a great deal of trouble otherwise I am very well. I took medison Saturday night. W.C. Swain’s Shop & two or 3 Buildings burnt up today loss about 40,000$, 7500$ Inshureance. Tuesday, July 18 Weather continues about the same. We are all still at work getting along very well. I get letters from home about every other day. My family are all well. I am very anxious to see them & would go down oftener to see them if it were not for the loss of time & the expence. It cost 6$ to go & return besides the loss of time. Wednesday, July 19 Weather continues warm. All at work getting along very well. I am fealing quite unwell with my leg have a boil just below the knee & my leg is quite swollen & very painfull. Will come near getting the first story up this week. No letter from home tonight. I am getting better. Saturday, July 22 Weather more pleasant today. Did not get the first story up. All the out side wall up & most of the centers out & the arches pointed up. We are now puting up the walls about the stareway. We put in the Stone Key this morning. No letter from my Wife tonight I am fearfull that she is unwell but hope she will be all right again & Earnestly pray to that affect. Sunday, July 23 Weather warm. I am still in Chico at present & dont know at present what time I will be able to go below to see my family. Dont like to loose time if I can avoid it. While my family are all well it is not necessary but if it is I will go at any time. I am fealing very well this morning. Monday, July 24 Weather warm but pleasant. W.C. Swain came up to Chico last eve & wanted me to go down to Marysville with him to help him get his new shop ready to get to work again as soon as posible. So I came down with him found my family all well & very glad to see me & I them. I went to work in the afternoon. Since the fire Swain has bought the Block of Buildings on the North side of First Street from D. to Maiden Lane & the lot oposite the Aley] 80 feet square for $7500.00 for his shops. Tuesday, July 25 Weather pleasant. I am at home working for W.C. Swain on 1st. St. He has quite a forse of men on. Wants to get to work again as soon as posible. I am setting the Engine at present. Family all well. Wednesday, July 26 Weather pleasant nights cool. I am still at home but expect to go back to Chico pretty soon as I am wanted there as soon as I can get off. Worked all day at Mr. Swain’s. Family all well. Thursday, July 27 Weather quite pleasant. Cool this morning. Our 6th Child a fine little girl was born this morning about 5 minutes past 6 o’clock. Mother & child are quite well. It is a very fine large child. I went to work as usual. Tuesday, August 1 Weather continues about the same. I am still at work for Mr. Swain. Expect to be here all this week then I expect to return to Chico. All well. Wednesday, August 2 Weather quite warm in the Sun. I got through with what work Swain had ready at 3 this afternoon. I then commenced Curtis Chimneys at his House that I built for him on D. St. Sallie & child are getting along very well. Thursday, August 3 Weather quite warm in the Sun. I worked all day on the chimneys for Curtis. All well. Friday, August 4 Weather quite hot today. Got through with the Chimneys at noon. Afternoon worked for Swain paveing D. St. in front of where his Office stood. Sallie is not so well today did not get up as she expected. Saturday, August 5 Weather warm. Sallie has been quite poorly all day. The child is well. I did not do anything today except to attend to some business. Got registered. Expect to start back to Chico tomorrow evening. Sunday, August 6 Weather warm but quite a good breeze from the South. Sallie was quite unwell all last night but is better today. I was at Church & Sabbath School this morning. I expect to go up this eve to Chico but I dislike very much to leave my family. Arrived in Chico this eve time enough for tea. I am still boarding at Mrs. Conger’s. Monday, August 7 Weather warm. I started on the second story of the Hall today. This story is to be a hollow wall tied together with pieces of lath about one foot long & placed about 1 foot apart 5 corses high. The outside of the wall is 8 in .then the space of 4½ in. then the inside 4 in wall. Tuesday, August 8 Weather warm. I am very well but Sallie is quite unwell yet. I get letters about every evening from her. The babe is quite well. Wednesday, August 9 Weather continues warm. I am still working on the Hall. We got along very well today. Thursday, August 10 Weather warm. We worked all day. We all stoped about 5.30 to get ready to go to Marysville on an Excurtion Booth Speaks there tonight. I go down because the fare is cheap & I want to see my family. We arrived about 9 found Sallie quite sick. I went for a Dr. but did not find the one we wanted so wated until morning. I did not get off tonight as I expected. The train returned about 12 tonight. Friday, August 11 Weather warm. I am in Marysville this morning but want to get back this eve if possible. Sallie appears something better today so I started back to Chico this eve. Saturday, August 12 Weather warm. I arrived safe last eve and went to work this morning. I rec a letter this eve. Sallie is still quite unwell & I am fealing very bad tonight. I has ought to go down in the morning. Sunday, August 13 Weather quite warm. I did not go to Marysville today. Felt very sad all day until I got a letter this eve from Sallie is something better. Feal very thankfull for it. Monday, August 14 Weather warm. All at work on the Hall and we are getting along very well. I get a letter every evening from Sallie she is still unwell. I wish I was through here so I could go home. They were left out when we started did not have them. Sallie is getting along slowly. I wished I was able to take my family to the mountains. Friday, August 25 Weather warm. I worked alone about the Hall all day. Most all the rest went to Sacramento on an excurtion. I think I will go down home tomorrow as nothing will be done this week. Saturday, August 26 Weather warm. I was at Church & S.S. this morning. None of my Class present. They have scattered since I went to Chico. I went back this evening to Chico. My family will come up tomorrow if they can get off. I arrived safe & went to my same boarding place & lodging Room. Monday, August 28 Weather warm. I went to work on the Hall this morning & we commenced on the sealing joist to top out. My family came up this evening & we all stoped at the Union House have two rooms at 32$ per week. Tuesday, August 29 Weather quite warm but the evenings are cool. I worked all day. Family well. I am very much pleased with Chico and are thinking of trying to sell out in Marysville & move up here & go with J. F. Fordham. He wants me to do so. Worked all day. Tonight was quite a lively time in Chico. Both parties had speaking & quite a crowd came up from Marysville. It all passed off very peasable until the Mville folks started home & on there way down to the depot one man got shot. W.C. Swain came up for me this eve to do the work for Him on the old United States Hotel. Had some trouble to get off but will do so & go down Monday morning. Sunday, September 3 Weather pleasant. Today was quite a sad day. The man that got shot last night was layed out in a Room close to the Chico House. I saw him this morning looks quite natural was shot through the right brest. Had one man arrested on suspition and had his trial today but got clear. I did not know anything about it until this morning. Sallie is unwell this evening has fever. We start home in the morning. Monday, September 4 Weather warm but not as much so as it has been. We arrived home this morning about 9 and I went to see about my work. Sallie is unwell had Dr. called. I commenced to get ready to go to work tearing down the wall of the old United States Hotel Tuesday, September 5 Weather warm. Worked all day tearing down the walls of the Hotel. It is quite a dangerous job have 6 or 8 to help me. Not a very pleasant job. I am quite busy at present. Dr. Rogers is ankious for me to build him a House or do the Brickwork. From present appearances I have nearly a winters work on hand for which I feal very thankfull. Wednesday, September 6 Weather pleasant I worked all day. Today is the Electtion day but I took but very little interest in it. Did not vote. Evening at home family all well. It rained today but we had but very little here only a few drops. Went to see about a job at the Buckeye Mills it is not ready yet. No prayer meeting tonight on account of the gass. Family about the same. Friday, December 29 Weather wet part of the day but it rained very hard yesterday & last night in the mountains & it raised the water in the river as high as it was in 1867 that being the highest water we ever had here. I worked most all day helping on a brake at the Starr Mills. Family about the same. Saturday, December 30 Weather pleasant today but still has the appearance of rain. We had another brake in the Levy last night & was quite hard to stop. Worked on it or got it safe about 11 O’clock last night. Sallie was quite sick this afternoon and evening the rest of the family are very well. Did not work today too wet. Sunday, December 31 Weather wet & cloudy all day. I did not go out all day. Sallie is something better but is quite weak. I am in hopes now she will get better now as we have health now. She has had to work too hard. We had Church & Sabbath School this morning but no Church in the evening. Well this is the last day of the old year & thanks to the good Lord we are all living very well & one in addition to the family circle. May the good Lord keep us all through the next year.
