I was alone in the Mills all day Beam our Miller is still away. I was very busy. One Load of wheat came of Wm. A. Ridgely & two loads corn in the ears giveing 3$ per Bbl for corn and 1.75 for wheat. Family all well. Friday, January 2 Weather quite pleasant for this season of the year. I am still alone in the Mills. I was busy most of the day grinding corn. Took in one load of corn of about 10 Bbls. Business is very dull no cash sails today. Mother is still with us. She is spending the day with Jacob’s family. Saturday, January 3 Weather quite pleasant almost warm enough to do without fire. I omitted to state that we gave the Children a reception on New year’s night quite a number were present & we all spent a very pleasant evening. I was not very busy in the Mill today. I am still alone. Mother went Home this eve. All well. Sunday, January 4 Weather quite pleasant. Jacob, Charlie & I took a walk up the R. Road as far as Woodbine. Returned in time to get dinner & attend Church at Watson. The Rev. Mr. Hide preached. Family all well. Monday, January 5 Weather not so pleasant today cloudy & a little wet part of the day. Mr. Beam got back this evening. Business very dull. Two samples of wheat came in I priced it presume we will get it. Family all well. Tuesday, January 6 Weather cloudy & wet all day. I went to Balto on a little business returned in the evening. I had my Bank Book Balance & found out that I was about 200$ better off then I supposed. Business dull. I sold 500” Meal as I came up. Family all well. Wednesday, January 7 Weather Cloudy & misty & quite warm & pleasant. We had a little trade today. Sent 500 Meal to Mr. Cleary Woodstock at 1.75 per 100 Bbs. I priced some wheat today for A. P. Forsyth not very good at 1.60. We looked over the Cloths and took up the Corn Burr. All well. Thursday, January 8 Weather quite pleasant clear but a little cool. We were quite busy today. 4 loads of wheat came in & we had some little trade. We commenced to grind in the evening & intend grinding all night. All well. Friday, January 9 Weather cool but pleasant. We were very busy all day in both Mills. I was up all last night. One load of wheat came today paid 1.75. Wheat is still on the rise 1.92 in Balto for best lots. All well. Saturday, January 10 Weather quite pleasant. We were quite busy all day running Country & Merchant Mills. We had two loads of corn to crush & grind & another load of wheat came today. Wheat is on the rise costed 1.92 in Balto. Will have to raise on our flour. We ran again last night. I was up until 1.30. All well. Sunday, January 11 Weather cool but pleasant. No Church or School. Have no more Sunday School until Spring. Jacob & I took a little walk over on Mr. Willis farm & back to Sam’s and spent the evening there. Monday, January 12 Weather cool but cold froze last night. We were very busy all day running both Mills. One load of wheat came today. We are [--] backer to the Saw Mill Wm. Selby is doing it commenced today. I am not fealing very well for a day or so. Tuesday, January 13, Weather quite cool all day & commenced to snow in the evening with the appearance of snowing all night. We were not so busy today. I was with Wm. Selby helping him with the Saw Mill Backer. Family all well. Wednesday, January 14 Weather quite wintery snow about 3 in deep it fell last night. It did not snow today but was quite cold. I helped Selby all day with the Backer. I rec a letter today from Dr. J. S. Bowen with a check for 300$. The Country Mill ran all day on corn. All well. Thursday, January 15 Weather clear & very cold with very good slawing. I worked all day with W. Selby putting in the backer to the Saw Mill. The Country Mill ran all day crushing & grinding corn. Family all well. Friday, January 16 Weather clear but very cold the ground is still covered with snow. We finished the backer to Saw Mill today. It was so cold we thought it best not to let in water oing to it freezeing on the wheel. Family all well. Saturday, January 17 Weather cool but not quite so cold as yesterday. I went to Balto today made arrangements to ship flour to Graves & Brown. A car was left in today for that purpose. Family all well. Sunday, January 18 Weather pleasant excepting cold in the shade. We went up to the Church in the afternoon but no Preacher came. We spent the evening at Jacob’s. Monday, January 19 Weather pleasant. We were quite busy the afterpart of the day. A load of corn came to be crushed & ground. We have been working all night it is now 3 o’clock. We sent a load of flour to Brown & Graves & Co. today. Business pretty good today. All well. Tuesday, January 20 Weather pleasant but has the appearance of rain or snow. We ran the Country mill all night last night, today & running again tonight. Dr. J.S. Bowen came up to see us this evening. He is looking well. Maud is unwell this afternoon & tonight. Wednesday, January 21 Weather quite pleasant. We were very busy all day. We ran all last night on corn & Homney. Dr, J.S. Bowen went Home this morning. We were very glad to see him. Done some sawing today tried the backer. Maud is still unwell. The Lord is good. Thursday, January 22 Weather very pleasant a Spring like day. We were very busy all day. We finished grinding A.P. Forsyth’s corn. Ran the Merchant Mill all day. Maud is better today. Friday, January 23 Weather quite pleasant except part of the afternoon was quite windy.We were quite busy all day grinding over Midlings & Sawing. Jacob & John helped me in the Saw Mill. We bought about 200 Bus wheat of R. Dorsey of C. 1.80 to be delivered next week. Saturday, January 24 Weather not quite so pleasant today windy most of the day. Andy Slicer came up today to see us. We were quite busy all day grinding & sawing. Jacob & John helped us in the Mill all day. We are grinding late tonight in the Country Mill. All well. Sunday, January 25 Weather quite cool & windy all day. Andy Slicer was with us all day. It was so cold we could not walk out much so we were about the House all day. I was reading most all day. All well. Monday, January 26 Weather cold & has the appearance of snow. We was busy all day in the Saw Mill sawing lumber for J.M. Berry Slab Town. Jacob & John helped us. Aside from that there was but very little doing. Andy went home this afternoon. All well. Tuesday, January 27 Weather cool but pleasant. Jacob, John & I worked all day in the Saw Mill. Business not very brisk today. Some corn came to be ground witch we will do after dark. Family all well. Wednesday, January 28 Weather rather changeable cloudy & wet part of the day. We were busy all day. Got through sawing what Logs were on hand about 3 this afternoon & were busy the balance of the day takeing in corn shelling grinding corn paying 3.87 per bbl yellow. A.P. Forsyth commenced to hall Logs. All well. Thursday, January 29 Weather quite pleasant excepting a little windy. We ran the Saw Mill all day Jacob & John helping. One load of wheat & one of corn came today. Paid 1.87 for wheat it is very good white wheat. Family all very well. Friday, January 30 Weather quite pleasant. Jacob, John & I worked in the Saw Mill all day. We three make about 7$ per day. We sent Jas. S. Gary & Son 5 Bbls flour today. Business quite dull. Family all well thanks to the good Lord. Saturday, January 31 Weather quite pleasant. We were in the Saw Mill all day sawing lumber for W.H. & A.P. Forsyth. Jacob & John still helping. Business very dull other wise. Family all well. Sunday, February 1 Weather cold & raw all day. I did not go out the House all day. Stayed in & read all day. Family all well. Monday, February 2 Weather quite wintery all day snowing all day & it is still snowing tonight. We could not get the Mill off until this afternoon being froze up. Got to sawing in the afternoon. Family all well. Tuesday, February 3 Weather more pleasant today. It cleared off with about 4 in snow on the ground. We were all day today fixing up the Saw Mill the Backer we got it all fixed so we can go to sawing tomorrow. All well. Wednesday, February 4 Weather cool the ground is still covered with snow. We were busy all day in the Saw Mill. Had another little brake down had to send to Sykesville to have it fixed. We cannot keep the logs sawed as fast as they want them. A load of wheat came today. All well. Thursday, February 5 Weather cool but pleasant clear with the ground covered with snow. We were quite busy today 3 loads of wheat came & one load corn. Paid 1.80 for wheat 3.37 for corn per bbl. The Saw Mill ran until it broke down again. The brake was small. All well. Friday, February 6 Weather quite wintery snowing all day. Jacob & John ran the Saw Mill alone today. Beam & I were busy in the Merchant Mill. We ran all last night & we are running tonight. 2 loads wheat & 1 of corn came today. Saturday, February 7 Weather cold & wintery ground covered with about 8 in snow. We ran the Mill again last night & today will or expect to run until late at night. Jacob & John worked in the Saw Mill all day. Business very dull. Family all well. Sunday, February 8 Weather pleasant but owing to the ground covered with snow it is cold. I was about home all day reading part of the time. No Preaching today. Family all well. Monday, February 9 Weather cold but pleasant. We had a little trouble starting the Mill on account of the ice. One small load of wheat came today paid 1.80. business dull. Sadie Wise ( my Nice) & Sadie McC spent the afternoon with us. Tuesday, February 10 Weather cool but pleasant in the Sun. We were all very busy in the Mills all day. Jacob & John sawing, Beam & I in the Mill. 3 loads of wheat came today. All well. Wednesday, February 11 Weather pleasant. We are still running the Merchant Mill night & day. One small load of wheat came in. Jacob & John is still running the Saw Mill. We are crushing & grinding corn tonight. Family all well. Thursday, February 12 Weather quite pleasant. We were not quite so busy today. One load of wheat came in. Jacob & John is still sawing. We finished grinding all the wheat on hand & commenced on Mid. Family all well. Friday, February 13 Weather cloudy & wet most of the day & warm which is takeing away the snow quite fast. We finished grinding in the Merchant today & took up the Burs & gave them a good washing. Jacob & John worked in the Saw Mill all day. Family all well. Saturday, February 14 Weather quite pleasant. Charlie & I went to Balto today returned in the evening. I found flour a very dull sale at present. We could not sell our flour & came out in it not wanting our work (sic).Family all well. Sunday, February 15 Weather cool but pleasant. I was about home all day. Family all well. Monday, February 16 Weather quite pleasant except at times the wind blew quite strong. Jacob, John & I worked in the Saw Mill all day. Aside from the Saw Mill business is very dull. All well. Tuesday, February 17 Weather quite pleasant except the wind which was quite fresh at time. Jacob, John & I worked in the Saw Mull all day and made a good days work. Business very slack in the flour Mills. Family all well. Wednesday, February 18 Weather quite pleasant. We all worked in the Saw Mill again today got along very well. Business in the Mill very dull. Family all well. Thursday, February 19 Weather cloudy & damp most all day. Jacob, John & I worked in the Saw Mill all day. We are most out of Logs. Done very well today. Business very dull in the Flour Mill. Family all very well thanks to the good Lord. Friday, February 20 Weather quite soft and pleasant. We finished Sawing this morning then went to grinding in the Country Mill. We rec. a letter from Mr. Banks today in regard to his Mortgage on the Hood’s Mill property which we are fealing very bad about. Saturday, February 21 Weather very pleasant quite a Spring day. We did a little grinding in the Corn Mill today. Business very dull. I wrote to Judge S. M. Bliss today in regard to money. Jacob went to Balto. To see Mr. Banks to get Extention of time on Mortgage Sunday, February 22 Weather weather (sic) very pleasant like a Spring day. We took a walk up as far as Mr. L. H. Selby’s & Marion’s farm. We found it quite warm walking. I was at home the remainder of the day. No Preaching today, all well. Monday, February 23 Weather quite pleasant again today except in the evening the wind got up quite brisk. Business quite dull all day. We ran the Homney Mill. I fixed up & with Charlie we hung up the Meat in the Smoke House. Family all very well. Tuesday, February 24 Weather cool but pleasant. Business very dull but Homney all day done a little crushing & grinding in the morning. Some more Logs came today to be sawed. Family all well. Wednesday, February 25 Weather quite wintery all day it commenced snowing last night & snowed all day today 6 or 8 in deep tonight. Business very dull today done nothing but beat Homney today. Family all well. Sallie is doing her own work. Thursday, February 26 Weather pleasant overhead but the walking is very bad owing to the ground being covered with snow. We were more busy today Mr. A.P. Forsyth brought over a load of corn to grind 89 Bus came today to grind. All well. Friday, February 27 Weather pleasant over head but very mudy & slopy owing to the snow it is disapearing very fast. We ran the Corn Mill all last night & today on corn expect to get through late tonight. We loaded a car of 80 Bbls of flour for Balto. All well. Saturday, February 28 Weather cool & clear. I sold some feed 29 Bus cash today about all the business we done. We finished grinding A.P. Forsyth’s corn today & ran up a little lot of wheat. Have an order to fill for Monday 2 Bbls R.R. Family at Woodbine. Family all well. Sunday, March 1 Weather pleasant. I was at home all day except in the afternoon I went up to our little Church. The Rev. Mr. Hide Preached the last sermon before Conference. I am not very well today have a bad cold the rest of the family are well. Monday, March 2 Weather quite pleasant. The snow is disapearing very fast. Business tolerable good today. We ran one Bur wheat today flour Market very dull in Balto. on the decline wheat not so firm. All well. Tuesday, March 3 Weather warm & cloudy most of the day thretening rain. We finished grinding all we have in the Merchant Mill & cleaned up. Business is very dull. We rec a bid from Sykesville for Plaster proposed to deliver by car load at 9$ per ton. All well. Wednesday, March 4 Weather quite pleasant except at times the wind blew quite strong. We got ready & commenced to grind Plaster today. We have an order to fill as soon as we get a car of 10 tons to go to Sykesville at 9$ delivered. I am not fealing very well. Thursday, March 5 Weather quite pleasant. We ran the Plaster Bur until one & then commenced to load a car of 10 tons of Plaster to go to Sykesville. I am fealing quite unwell all day I took some Blue Mass this evening. Friday, March 6 Weather quite wintery all day it snowed quite hard part of the forenoon. We finished loading the car of Plaster to go to Sykesville and ground Plaster the balance of the day. I am fealing unwell all day the rest of the family well. Saturday, March 7 Weather warm but cloudy most all day. Business very dull all day. Did some little grinding on corn Bur. Sent 300” Plaster to E. City also sold 1 ton to W.A. Ridgely selling at 10 per ton. I am fealing a little better today. Family all well. Sunday, March 8 Weather clear & windy all day. I did not go out of the house today stayed at home and read all day. There was no Preaching today. All well except my self. Monday, March 9 Weather just about such a day as yesterday. We ran the Country Mill all day. Filled an order to go to Henryton of 500” Meal at 1.80. Business dull. I wrote to J.T. Fordham, Chico Cal. Today. I am fealing better today. All well. Tuesday, March 10 Weather quite windy & cool all day. This is the third day the wind has been blowing. Business very dull. We have been grinding corn for our selves all day. Henry Forsyth has been hawling logs all day to the Mill. All well. Wednesday, March 11 Weather clear windy and cool. We did not saw today on account of the wind and had nothing else to do. Business still continues dull but expect to be busy. Family all well. Thursday, March 12 Weather cool and windy all day. We Beam & I worked in the Saw Mill all day sawing. One log for our selves & for A.P. & W.H. Forsyth. Business not very brisk and very little work to do. Family all pretty well. Friday, March 13 Weather quite cold and windy it froze all day. We sawed until noon. Afternoon did some grinding on the Country Bur. Jacob went to Balto. today on business for the store. All well. Saturday, March 14 Weather windy but not so cold in the evening as it has been but it froze harder last night then it has for some time. We were busy all day sawing & selling some feed & flour. A.B. Davis took 50 Bu feed today. Our chimney took fire this eve no harm done. All well. Sunday, March 15 Weather pleasant all day. Did not blow but very little today. I walked out as far as the Dam in the forenoon. The remainder of the day I spent in reading at home. No Preaching today. Family all very well. Monday, March 16 Weather cloudy & wet most all day it snowed some in the forenoon. We finished Sawing what Logs were on hand & then cleaned up the Mills. Business very dull. I am fealing anxious to Sell out & try my luck Elsewhere. All well. Tuesday, March 17 Weather pleasant except a little cloudy. I went to Balto to attend to some business. Gave in my Card at the Odd Fellows. I returned in the evening. A Gentleman came up to see our property today. We are trying to sell. Family all well. Wednesday, March 18 Weather quite pleasant. We done nothing today in grinding sent some Meal & flour away. Business very dull. Family all well. Thursday, March 19 Weather warm and cloudy & wet a little part of the day. We commenced to load a car of Plaster for Zimmerman & Shultz, Sykesville. We were [--] of [--] all day. Family all well except my self I have not felt well for some time. Friday, March 20 Weather pleasant a little cloudy with some breeze but no rain. We were busy grinding Plaster and finishing loading Car of Plaster to go to Sykesville. Aside from that business was slack. I still have a bad cold the rest of F. all well. Saturday, March 21 Weather quite pleasant. We were quite busy all day. W.H. Forsyth brought a load of mixed grane to chop & also another small load of Fifer. One small load of very good white wheat came paid 1.67. Sold 2 Bbls R.R.F. at 10.00. We put up our Lamp Post. All well. Sunday, March 22 Weather pleasant. There was a call for Preaching this afternoon but no Preacher came. There was quite a number out. I returned home and continued my reading. All well. Monday, March 23 Weather pleasant except some wind. I started the Country Mill early this morning & we ground all day until late this evening. Beam returned on the 10 o’clock train. Family all well. Tuesday, March 24 Weather cool it froze quite hard last night. We were grinding corn and shelling all day today. One load small load wheat came paid 1.65. He took the most of it out in flour, feed & Plaster. Wednesday, March 25 Weather pleasant quite a Spring day after the cold frosty night with quite a skim of ice over the dam. We kept doing something all day ground some plaster took up plaster & corn Bur. A Mr. Wigfall came up to look at the place. Uncle Gabe also came up on business. All well. Thursday, March 26 Weather quite pleasant. I worked about home fixing up the front yard and stratening dich in garden. We sold 55 bu feed today cash & some plaster ground 2 grists. Family all very well thanks to the good Lord. Friday, March 27 Weather quite pleasant with a lite breeze. One small load wheat came today red paid 1.50 for it. I worked all day in my garden getting it ready to have it Plowed. I finished stratening the dich & planted out the [--] Bushes. Family all well. Saturday, March 28 Weather quite pleasant. I worked about my garden about all day and fixing a crossing at the garden gate. Charlie helped me. We have the garden ready now to be plowed. Capt. Mercer has promised to do it next week. Sunday, March 29 Weather quite pleasant in the forenoon. We took a walk up to Marion’s place. Afternoon went to Church Watson our new Preacher preached the Rev. Mr. Clem. We all are very much pleased with him. All well. Monday, March 30 Weather quite pleasant. We ran the Country Mill all day in chop & corn. I got my garden plowed today. I worked there most all day. I soad my Lettis, Redishes and cabbage. All well. Tuesday, March 31 Weather cloudy & wet all day with snow. Commenced to rain & snow about 9 this morning. I planted my Peas this morning. We filled an order of J.S. Gary & Son of 10 Bbls flour & 1000” Meal. We ground Meal most all day. Family all well. Wednesday, April 1 Weather quite wintery it snowed and rained all last night and today but not very hard. We did not do much today sold a little Plaster and a little Meal. We ran the Country Mill all day on meal for our selves. Business dull family all well. Thursday, April 2 Weather cloudy part of the day but warm. We done some business part of the day sold some feed & Plaster & ingaged some Plaster & also done some grinding. 2 more Logs came to be sawed. Capt. Devall moved in our House on the Hill above store at 5$ per Month with paster for one cow. Friday, April 3 Weather quite pleasant. We were quite busy today selling Plaster. Done some crushing & grinding corn. A little lot of wheat came to exchange for flour & feed. Uncle Louis Slicer & [--] came out this eve. Family all very well. Saturday, April 4 Weather clear windy and cool in the afterpart of the day. We were quite busy today with the Plaster sold 4 or 5 tons. One load wheat came of C.W. Hood paid 1.50. We are selling Plaster at 10, 10.50 (2000 lbs). Family all well. Sunday, April 5 Weather windy and cool. Uncle Louis Slicer & Phenni is still with us. We spent the day at home and walking about. We took quite a walk in the forenoon & also in the afternoon. We are very glad to have them with us. Monday, April 6 Weather quite pleasant all day. Uncle Louis & Phenni went home this afternoon. I put on the Rachet on the Saw Mill Wheal today. We ran the Merchant Mill all day ran two Burs. Jas. Price finished getting his 5 tons Plaster. Family all well. Tuesday, April 7 Weather quite pleasant it rained last night & part of this forenoon which was very much needed. We were quite busy all day running the Mills & selling flour, feed & Plaster. We are running tonight on Country work. All well. Wednesday, April 8 Weather warm and incline to rain fine Spring weather. We sawed two Logs for W.H. Forsyth this morning then went to grinding Plaster. Sold only one ton Plaster today. We were not very busy today. Family all well. Thursday, April 9 Weather wet all day. I was busy all day planting my Trees 12 Apple, 5 Peach, 6 dorf Pairs and 10 grape vines. I think I made a good job in planting as I took a good deal of pains with them. Charlie helped me. I rec a letter from J.T. Fordham, Chico Cal. All well. Friday, April 10 Weather pleasant. I finished my fince running cross the yard from the two corners of the House. It rained quite hard last night caused the River to rise quite high. I sold 2000” corn chop to A. Hewett at 1.72 will have to grind late tonight to have it ready. Saturday, April 11 Weather quite pleasant except in the evening it got quite windy it was quite cold last night it froze some with a heavy frost. We were quite busy all day with feed and Plaster. Charlie went to Balto yesterday came home this evening. Sunday, April 12 Weather quite cool. It froze quite hard last night. Peach trees being out in Bloom I presume they are all killed. We had Preaching this afternoon by our young Preacher the Rev. Mr. Colb. We were all very much pleased with him. Monday, April 13 Weather quite cool all day had another cold night last night. We were very busy all day sawing some Logs for A. Leiser after that ground Plaster sold some Plaster today. Business not very brisk today. Andy Slicer had an attack of Paralices sat. eve. Tuesday, April 14 Weather quite pleasant today except part of today the wind blew some. We kept most of the day grinding Plaster and some corn. Evening I planted my onions. Business quite dull. All well. Wednesday, April 15 Weather showery and spring like all day. I planted my Potatoes today. Sold some flour & 500 Meal today to T.C. Cook (Henryton) B&O R.R. We sawed small Logs for Z.M. Waters. We are all very well. Thursday, April 16 Weather cloudy and wet all day. We did not do much today except grind Meal for our selves & clean up about the Mills. Sold some Plaster & some feed. Bus not very lively today. Flour still keeps down. Family all very well. Friday, April 17 Weather cloudy & wet all day but did not rain very much. We ground & shelled corn most all day. Aside from that business was dull. We are haveing good growing weather for most everything. All well. Saturday, April 18 Weather cool and cloudy but no rain. We did not do much today sold some Plaster & a little feed& flour. Took up the corn Bur & cleaned up some corn & ground some corn. Business is not very brisk but in hopes business will be better soon. All well. Sunday, April 19 Weather cloudy and wet all day. No Church today so I had to stay about home all day weather too wet to get about much. Family all pretty well. Monday, April 20 Weather cloudy and wet most all day it is clearing off this eve and has the appearance of clear weather for tomorrow. We did not have much to do today. Pay Car came up this morning. Some of the R.R. hands paid there Bills. Family all well. Tuesday, April 21 Weather quite pleasant today to what it has been. We kept busy all day with Plaster & sawing & takeing off Logs. John Beam halling Logs all day. I find we have ready sail for all our feed. Family all well. Wednesday, April 22 Weather quite pleasant. We were quite busy all day. 4 loads wheat came paid 1.74 7 1.75. Sold 4 tons Plaster at 10$ per ton (2000). We also done some sawing and grinding Plaster. Also sold some flour, feed & corn Meal. Family all well. Thursday, April 23 Weather cloudy and wet most all day. We were busy in the Mills all day running up wheat & grinding Plaster & Meal. Took up Plaster Bur today. We got order this afternoon for 3000# at 1.90 to go to Ellicott City. Friday, April 24 Weather quite pleasant all day. The Rev. Henry Slicer’s death was in today’s papers. He died yesterday. We were very busy all day grinding corn & running up wheat & selling Plaster. We sent off 3000# Meal to E. City. Family all well. Saturday, April 25 Weather cloudy and wet all day. The river has been raiseing all day. We finished shelling corn & in the afternoon we ground Plaster but stoped for fear of a rise in the River. Business was dull on account of the weather. All well. Sunday, April 26 Weather clear windy & cold. Sallie & I went to Balto today to attend Uncle H. Slicer’s funereal. The funereal took place at the M.E. Church by the Washington Monument. It was very much crowded. Sallie stayed in I returned home alone. Oh, that our end may be as His. Monday, April 27 Weather pleasant except some wind. We were very busy all day with plaster, feed &co. We filled two orders for Meal & plaster some to go up the road and some to go down. Did not send the last lot on account of the rain. Crushing & grinding corn all day. Family all well. Wednesday, April 29 Weather quite wintery today commenced last night & snowed until late this forenoon about 3 or 4 in deep but pretty well disapeared before night. We were busy in the Country Mill all day grinding corn. We send off some Meal, feed & Plaster. All well. Thursday, April 30 Weather pleasant but was quite cold last night & this morning considerable ice this morning. We were quite busy all day grinding & started Merchant Mill. Two loads wheat came paid 1.75. Sold some Plaster. Weather very cold for this time of the year. Paid Selby for Cow. Family all well. Friday, May 1 Weather quite pleasant all day. We ran the Merchant Mill all day. Expect to run it all night tonight. Sold some Plaster and feed. Business was not very brisk today. Family all well. Saturday, May 2 Weather cloudy & thretening rain all day but did not rain but very little. We ran the Merchant all last night & all day and will run late this eve. Weather very brisk today oing to the weather I presume. Family all well. Sunday, May 3 Weather quite pleasant to what it has been yet it was a little cool for this time of the year. No Preaching today so I spent the day about home. In the evening we all went down to Jacob’s. Monday, May 4 Weather cloudy & wet all day. We ran the Merchant Mill all day on wheat. Aside from that business was quite dull. We are running until bed time tonight. Family all very well. Tuesday, May 5 Weather wet most all day it cleared off in the evening. I am in hopes we will have good weather now. We finished grinding wheat about noon we then went to grinding midlings. All well. Wednesday, May 6 Weather pleasant a little cloudy but no rain. We had to stop grinding Mid and go to grinding Plaster but stoped in the afternoon & finished & cleaned up the Merchant Mill got through about 9 tonight. We were quite busy all day with Plaster & feed. All well. Thursday, May 7 Weather pleasant some frost again last night. We were quite busy all day with plaster principaly Filled an order for J.S. Gary & Son 1000 meal at 1.87½ . In the afternoon we finished shelling what corn on hand. Family all well. Friday, May 8 Weather quite pleasant all day. We were not so busy today. Sold some plaster & some flour 4 Bbls to W.S. Robb at 8.50 that is very low for the price of wheat. I had some little time this afternoon so I went in my garden & planted my corn. All well. Saturday, May 9 Weather quite warm today. We ground plaster until about 2 this afternoon. Sold a little over 2 tons. Beam went on the trane this afternoon. I rec a letter from Franklin Lodge I.O.O.F. stateing will cost me 40$ to get back to the Lodge. Being so much I do not feal able to give it. All well. Sunday, May 10 Weather quite pleasant the first pleasant day we have had for a long time very much like summer. We had Preaching this afternoon very good attendance. The Rev. Mr. Colb preached. Family all well. Monday, May 11 Weather pleasant. We sold between 2 & 3 tons plaster today & some feed & flour. I whealed plaster in the Mill until noon. John broke between times. I worked in my garden planted Beans, Beats, parsnips, corn cantelopes, cucumbers, Red & stack my peas. All well. Tuesday, May 12 Weather quite pleasant a little cool. We were not very busy today sold some Plaster 2540. John broke plaster all day. I whealed part of the forenoon & worked in my garden. I have it pretty well filled up. Family all well thanks to the good Lord. Wednesday, May 13 Weather quite pleasant. We were busy all day grinding plaster sold about 4 ½ tons. Have an order to fill for 1 ton Corn Chop for A. Hewit @ 1.77—30 days. As we are about out of wheat feed we can sell corn & rye chop. Family all well. Thursday, May 14 Weather quite pleasant a little hazy and warm in the Sun. We filled that order of A. Hewett for 1 ton corn chop. Sold about 3 tons plaster today. I ingaged some corn & rye. Business very brisk. Family all well. Friday, May 15 Weather cloudy & misty part of the day. We took up the corn bur and dress the bur this morning afternoon corn chop & rye chop. We managed to keep busy all day & ran untill late at night on chop. Family all very well. Saturday, May 16 Weather warm. We had quite a little thunderstorm in the evening. We sent 500 lbs Meal to J.S. Cross Henryton at 1.85. We ran the Saw Mill until 2-30 then grown some corn for Mr. Waters & our selves. The trees are getting green. Family all well. Sunday, May 17 Weather quite pleasant. No Sabbath School & Church & we miss it very much. I spent the day about home reading most of the time. We had company in the evening. Family all well. Monday, May 18 Weather cool and pleasant a little cloudy but no rain. We ran the corn Mill all day grinding grists & corn for our selves. Sent away some Meal & Chop and sold some Plaster & 2 Bbls flour. Rec an order this evening for 2500# Plaster to go to Watersville. All well. Tuesday, May 19 Weather pleasant a little cool last night was almost cool enough for frost. We worked about the Plaster Mill all day. We sent 2500# to Watersvile at 10$ per ton. Business rather dull today. Rec an order for more plaster in the morning. All well. Wednesday, May 20 Weather pleasant. We were busy most of the day in the saw Mill. R. Dorsey of C brought some rye & 12 Bbls corn paying 90cts for Rye & 4$ per Bbl for corn. Business dull family all well. Thursday, May 21 Weather pleasant a little cloudy cool and windy. We were busy all day in the Saw Mill. Had to stop to take in some corn one load of 5 Bbls yellow paid 44 Bbl. A Gentleman came up this eve to look at our property. All well. Friday, May 22 Weather pleasant. We were quite busy all day sawing & attending to other matters about the Mill. Sold some flour, feed & plaster. One load of corn came today small load 31 Bus paid 80cts. Family all well. Saturday, May 23 Weather quite pleasant. We were busy in the saw Mill all day sawing. Business was very good today. Mr. Ember a Gentleman looking at our property with a view of purching is still with us. He is quite a pleasant Man. All well. Sunday, May 24 Weather quite pleasant. Mr. Albert Ember is still with us. We took quite a walk up above Woodbine to see the Waterspout. Afternoon went to Watson & in the evening we walked to Sykesville to Church. We hered two good sermons. Family all well. Monday, May 25 Weather warm and in the evening we had quite a thunder storm with some Hale. The storm appeared very heavy South of us. Mr. Ember is still with us. He is here for the purpose of looking at the property. I did not do much today. Tuesday, May 26 Weather quite pleasant except some wind. Beam came home at 10 this morning. I had John Wagner helping me in the Saw Mill untill Beam returned. A load of wheat & corn came today paid 1.55 & 83 per Bu for corn. Mr. Ember went home this eve. Family all well. Wednesday, May 27 Weather quite pleasant. We grown corn this morning & late in the evening and between that time we ran the Saw Mill. Business tolerable good for corn chop. Business very dull. What spare time I have I work in my garden. All well. Thursday, May 28 Weather warm today in the Sun. We grown corn chop untill after Breakfast then we ran the saw Mill the balance of the day. The Saw Mill strap broke had to stop & mend it. Business dull today family all well. Friday, May 29 Weather warm. We worked in the Saw Mill most all day. Finished sawing M.A. Brian Logs. We got an order for 500# yellow corn Meal. We commenced to grind it in the evening. I planted out my Tomatoes this eve, Saturday, May 30 Weather quite warm. We grown some corn & ran up some wheat. Did not saw today. Before Breakfast we shelled some corn. We filled 2 orders one of 500# Meal to T.M. Hall of Watersville & one of 5 Bbls flour to J.S. Gary & Son Alberton. I am fealing very much depressed on account of finances. Sunday, May 31 Weather quite warm. We had no Church today. Mr., Mrs. & Miss Smith & Mrs. Mercer spent the evening with us. I was about home all day family all well. Monday, June 1 Weather warm but a good breeze it rained last night something we needed. I went to Balto. today to see Mr. Banks. I got along with him much better then I expected. I paid him some money. Returned in the evening, all well. Tuesday, June 2 Weather quite pleasant. We finished sawing what Logs were on hand at noon. Grown corn the balance of the day. I worked in my garden most all the afternoon. Bus dull all well. Wednesday, June 3 Weather cloudy & wet most all day. I finished howing my garden just before the rain. We ground corn most all day for our selves. I put some new Brackets in the Water Wheal & commenced to fix up about the Mill. Business dull family all well. Thursday, June 4 Weather a little cloudy & hazy all day but no rain. We worked all day Raiseing the Garders in the East end of the Mill made a very good job I think. Retailed some flour & corn chop today. Maud’s eyes is quite sore. Friday, June 5 Weather quite foggy this morning after which the Sun came out quite warm & in the evening we had a little gust of rain. I rebuilt the hoisting jack Merchant mill outside then commenced to clean up the Boalting chest. Filled an order of Wm. Cleary 500 Meal. Saturday, June 6 Weather pleasant warm in the Sun. Jacob helped me part of today makeing some repairs on the Boalting Chest. We rec an order today for 3000# Meal to go to C.F. Fusting Catonsville. Mother came up this eve. Sunday, June 7 Weather very warm. Jacob & I rode over in Howard Co. to Church and after dinner we went to our little Church Watson the Rev. Mr. Colb Preached. Remainder of the day at home. Maude is quite unwell with her face. Monday, June 8 Weather very warm, The nights is also very warm. We had a gust in the eve. Business was quite brisk today. Sent 2500# Meal to Catonsville to C.F. Fusting at 1.90 freight paid to E. City also 900 “ Chop mostly Rye to Sykesville. Mr. Beam broke one of the iron Bev. Wheals in the country Mill. Tuesday, June 9 Weather quite warm, Hot. We did not do much today ran the corn all day on Rye chop & Meal. I sold 4 Bbls R.R. Family to W. S. Robb to sell again at 8.50. it was so warm did not feal like doing much Repairs. Wednesday, June 10 Weather quite warm cloudy with some rain the after part of the day. We were not very busy today had some little traid. The Bevil Wheal came up & I put it on. All well. Sallie had a colored girl come in today. Thursday, June 11 Weather pleasant after the rain we had last eve & this morning. Business quite dull today. Jacob & I leveled & timed the corn Bur. & done some other fixing about Country Mill. Done some grinding on it after we got it fixed. Will have to go to sawing soon. Family all well. Family all well except Maud her face is sore again. Sunday, June 14 Weather quite pleasant. Jacob & I rode over to McCendry M.E. Church this morning the Rev. Mr. Colb Preached. I stayed about home the balance of the day. Maud is quite unwell with her Eyes. Monday, June 15 Weather continues quite pleasant. We started on the fore bay today to get out the timbers. Jacob worked at it all day. Two loads of corn came today in the yard. We ground corn all day. Sold some Plaster today a ton or two. Family all well except Maudie. Tuesday, June 16 Weather pleasant hazy all day with the appearance of rain. We were not very busy today one load of corn came & we shelled it. Ground Meal & chop most all day. Sent 500” yellow Meal to T.M. Hall at 1.80. Family all well except Maud. Wednesday, June 17 Weather quite pleasant. We ran the Saw Mill in the morning & on corn in the afternoon. Jacob & I worked on the timbers of the fore bay in the afternoon. Wm. A. Hewett ordered another ton corn chop. I find it hard to get corn to fill orders. Thursday, June 18 Weather cool and pleasant except some wind from the North blew a little strong at times. We got the 2000 lbs corn chop ready and sent it off. Sawed a Log this morning for John Forsyth. Jacob & I worked a while on our fore bay. Maudie’s eye is still very sore. Friday, June 19 Weather pleasant except in the Sun it was quite warm. We have been out again today trying to get corn but could not get any. Those that have it are too busy to hall it. Business was very dull today. Sawed a Log & ground corn the balance of the day. Maudie is about the same. Saturday, June 20 Weather quite pleasant. We had no grinding to do today. Jacob & I finished getting out the frame work for the fore Bay & expect to go at it Monday morning & put it in. We had some retail traid today. I planted cabbage plants this eve. Sunday, June 21 Weather pleasant in the shade but quite warm in the sun. We had Preaching at Watson this afternoon. I was about home the remainder of the day. Maud is something better we think. Mother is still with us. Monday, June 22 Weather warm. We commenced to put in the Fore Bay today. Jacob & I are doing the work. R. Dorsey of C. brought a load of corn today paid 4 Dollars per Bu corn is getting scarce. Family the same. Tuesday, June 23 Weather quite warm. Jacob & I worked all day at the Fore Bay. We are putting in a new fore bay. We got along very well with it. If nothing prevents us will get it finished in a day or two more. Maud is imporveing. Wednesday, June 24 Weather quite warm & dry we need rain. Jacob & I worked in the fore bay untill noon then we let water in & went to shelling & grinding corn. We have more orders for Meal then we can fill cant get the corn. Thursday, June 25 Weather warm. Jacob & I worked all day on the fore bay. If nothing interferes I think we will get the wood work through tomorrow. Business quite dull today. Family all well. Friday, June 26 Weather quite warm & dry no rain yet which we need very much now. Tuesday, June 30 Weather pleasant after the rain. I worked about the fore bay getting ready for the R.R. Truck in the morning. I worked on the flow convayor in the tower part of the Mill. We took up the Burs in the Merchant Mill to have them dressed leveled & [--] I worked in the tower part of the Mill today. Andy Slicer came up this morning. He is not very well. Uncle Louis Slicer went home this eve. Family all well. Tuesday, July 7 Weather pleasant. We raised the Bur next to the front dore & leveled it up. We had quite a job of it with that we have to raise everything else about it. Business quite dull. Times is very hard & we are fealing it. Will have to try & sell out or be sold out. Wednesday, July 8 Weather quite warm. Jacob helped me some about the Bur in the Merchant Mill today. Business dull on account not haveing corn. We got 2 orders of 2500” Meal but have no corn. Thursday, July 9 Weather very warm all day. Jacob & I fixed the Old Bur in the Merchant Mill. We put a base in the Hoop to make it higher. Business very quite. We are spending our time in fixing up about the Mill. Family all well. Friday, July 10 Weather quite warm. I did not do much today. I worked about the fore bay in the morning & inside of the Mill in the afternoon. I worked in my garden in the evening. Business very dull. Family all well. Saturday, July 11 Weather warm all the forenoon some breeze in the afternoon with a gust in the evening had a very nice little shower. We took up the large old Bur in the Merchant Mill & commenced to fix it up. Business is slack. Family all well Maud is better. Sunday, July 12 Weather warm in the afternoon & middle of the day when it rained quite hard for a while then it got quite pleasant. Jacob & I walked up to see John Minor (?). He is quite sick but is something better. Monday, July 13 Weather pleasant after the rain of yesterday. Today has been quite a good day as two Bills was paid amounting to about 60 Dollars. We finished the old Bur in Merchant Mill ready for grinding. Family all well. Tuesday, July 14 Weather quite warm. Took out & raised up the lower Mill Door in Merchant Mill today. It looks much better. Business tolerable good today for retail trade. We will soon have new wheat now. All well. Wednesday, July 15 Weather quite warm. We worked all day about the Mill fixing up getting ready to grind new wheat when it comes in. We had another order for Meal but could not fill it no corn. I want to go to Balto tomorrow. All well. Thursday, July 16 Weather quite warm. I went to Balto today on Business. I bought 102/3 yards Boalting Cloth paid 3.30 per yard [--] [--] Business appears very dull. I returned in the evening. Family all well. Friday, July 17 Weather not so warm today. We did not have very much to do today. We took off the old Boalting Cloth & got ready to put on the new one as soon as it is ready. I was busy looking over the last year’s work. Have a good deal owing on Books. Saturday, July 18 Weather more pleasant today. I worked at the Boalt putting on strips of tin on the Ribs to keep the [--] from the cloth. Business dull today. I let Mr. Eden have 20 bags for wheat. Family all well. Sunday, July 19 Weather quite warm. Jacob & I rode over to Mathews Church & herd the Rev. Mr. Mathews preach. We was very much pleased. We returned time enough to get dinner & go to our little Church in the afternoon. All well. Monday, July 20 Weather warm but [not] so warm as it has been. We had a load of new Wheat come today the first of the season brought by J.M. Dorsey gave 1.25 several other samples came in. Sallie & Mother were busy all day on the Bolting Cloth want to put it on tomorrow. All well. Tuesday, July 21 Weather cloudy & wet all day a regular old fashioned settled rain which is very much needed at present. Dorsey brought two more loads of wheat today, have been -?--ing it up all day. What spare time we had we, Jacob & I were puting on the new Cloth. Wednesday, July 22 Weather pleasant. Jacob & I worked all day on the bolting Chest fixing up cloths & makeing repairs. We ran the Mill on wheat untill afternoon then went to choping in Country Mill. We are running the two old Burs on wheat. Family all well. Thursday, July 23 Weather pleasant. We ground & packed on new wheat all day. Stoped in the eve to take in a small load corn & grind some chop. We had an order for 5 Bbls flour & 1000” Meal. Filled the order for flour will send the Meal in a day or so. All well. Friday, July 24 Weather pleasant. The R. Road Hands repaired the switch in front of the Mill today made a good job of it. We ran the Country Mill all last night & until noon today then we started the Merchant Mill. Family all well. Saturday, July 25 Weather quite warm today and getting dry again. The water is quite low in the River not enough to run night & day. 3 loads of wheat came in today of J. Brandenberg very good wheat. We have been grinding & Bolting all day. All well. Sunday, July 26 Weather quite warm until evening then it clouded up & got quite cool. Jacob was quite sick today had to send for a Dr. I was about home all day today as we had no Church today. Commenced to grind this afternoon. Sent off car load flour to Brown Graves & Co. Thursday, July 30 Weather warm. We finished grinding the Plaster & loaded a car of 10 tons in Bags to go to Sykesville to Zimmerman & Shultz at 9$ per delivered. Sent J.S. Gary & Son 5 Bbls R.R.F. & sold 1 Bbl at 8.50. Family all well. Friday, July 31 Weather quite warm. 2 loads & 2 loads wheat came today paying 95cts for corn & about 1.30 for wheat. We are grinding Meal all day. We ran all last night on wheat I was up until 4 this morning will run again tonight the good Lord willing. We ground & packed all day. The water is quite low. Family all well. Dorsey sent over one load wheat 91 Bus priced at 1.20. oing to the water being so low had to take out Bur in order to pack & run up wheat. We ran all last night. Family all well. Tuesday, August 11 Weather pleasant. We ran last night & all day today & again tonight on Midlings grinding over. We loaded another car of 10 tons Plaster for Zimmerman & Shultz Sykesville. Business was dull today in flour. Jacob is up with me tonight. All well. Wednesday, August 12 Weather close & warm with a gust in the evening mostly wind. We finished grinding over the Mid & loaded a car of 80 Bbls flour to Means & Dunn. I was up all last night & half of the night before & I feal quite tired out. All well. Thursday, August 13 Weather warm. We ran the Saw Mill all day. One load wheat came in late this evening paid 1.25. We sent off load flour today to Means & Dunn. Family all well. Friday, August 14 Weather warm. We ran the saw Mill all day sawing for John Mercer. 4 or 5 small loads wheat came in today most of it very good wheat paying 1.25 / 1.30. Business rather dull today family all well. Saturday, August 15 Weather pleasant. We sawed untill noon. Three small loads wheat came in in the forenoon. Have been runing the wheat up all the afternoon. The lower sink got full. Family all well. Sunday, August 16 Weather warm. Charlie & I went up to Mt. Airy to Camp Meeting went up on the cars the cars was very much crowded. A great many were there & very dusty. We returned in the evening. Family all well. Monday, August 17 Weather warm & dry. We commenced on wheat again this morning. Stoped a while in the evening to do some Country grinding will run late in the evening but will not grind all night. Some samples of wheat came in today. All well. Tuesday, August 18 Weather warm & dry. One load of wheat came in paid 1.28. We ran & packed all day. We stoped Merchant Mill to grind some chop for Forsyth,. Business quite dull today. I settled up in full today with Z.M. Waters it is the first time we have been [--] for a long while. Wednesday, August 19 Weather warm & close & continues very dry. So far we have had a very dry summer that is preferable to a flood. May the good Lord be gentle with us. We have been grinding wheat all day. Mother & Maggie went to Balto this evening. Thursday, August 20 Weather very warm today weather continues dry. We were not very busy today. Did not have a car in to be loaded as I expected. We ran one Bur on wheat all day. Family to Means & Dunn. Sold 500” Meal to Wm. Cleary at 2.10. I have been very unwell with my back today hardly able to get about. Saturday, August 22 Weather cloudy all day with some rain. I am still unwell with my Back. I just manage to get about the Mill but cant do anything but attend to business. Ground & Packed all day. Beam ran one Bur all last night. Family well Maggie is away. Sunday, August 23 Weather cloudy & quite rainy all day. The trane came up from Balto to Camp meeting quite a number of cars came up & also quite a good number went from here. Charlie went. I with the balance of my family stayed home. I am quite unwell yet. Monday, August 24 Weather cloudy but did not rain very much today. We have had a very good rain which was very much wanted. We ran both Mills today but business is very slack do not expect to grind much. Wheat is comeing down every day with about 1.10 here now. Tuesday, August 25 Weather cloudy & wet all day. Ran both Mills part of the day one bur in each one on wheat and one on corn. One small load of 30 Bus wheat came giveing 1.16 today. Wheat is lower. My back is still quite bad. Wednesday, August 26 Weather quite pleasant today. We have had quite a good rain just about what is needed at present. Major C.W. Hood is hawling Logs the last few days to be sawed. Ran both Mills today one wheat & corn. Two loads wheat came today paid 1.01 & 1.10 good wheat the lowest we have paid. Thursday, August 27 Weather quite cool in the shade a little frost was reported last night. We finished what wheat was in the Mill & turned on the Midlings late this afternoon. Filled an order of J.S. Gary & Son of 2000” Meal at 2.10. I am better today. Friday, August 28 Weather quite pleasant. I went as far as Catensville today to try and sell flour suceded very well most on tryal Union Murfy Co E. City 4 Bbls at 7.50 & 10 Bbls to Z & Shultz & 3 or 4 other partes 1 Bbl each. Also 500” Meal tomorrow to [--]. Returned in the evening very much pleased. Saturday, August 29 Weather quite pleasant. We finished grinding over & cleaned up everything in Merchant Mill. If nothing interferes will go to sawing Monday. Sent off by R.R. 10 Bbls flour & 500# Meal today. Aside from that Bus was dull. All well. Sunday, August 30 Weather pleasant. At home all the forenoon. Monday, August 31 Weather pleasant. We ran the saw Mill all day on some Logs for Bob Mercer & Major C.W. Hood. We sent 4 Bbls flour to Union Murfy Co. Ellicott City & 1 Bbl to Sykesville J. W. Morehead. Family all well. Tuesday, September 1 Weather pleasant. We started the Saw Mill in the morning but had to stop to grind Plaster & do some Country grinding one or two little lots of wheat came in and some to exchange for flour. Sam is setting up the Books between Jacob & I today. All well. Wednesday, September 2 Weather warm. We ran the saw Mill all day on Logs of Major Hood. One small load wheat came today gave 1.20. Sent 400 Meal to J.A. Dashune(?) Morgan Switch at 2.10 Family all well. Thursday, September 3 Weather pleasant. We finished sawing today then commenced to take up the Burs & fix them. Did some little grinding on Country Bur. Business was very slack all day sold but very little. Maggie is still in Balto. I am getting better. Friday, September 4 Weather cloudy all day but no rain. Business was very dull all day. We kept busy takeing up & washing Burs. Done some grinding in Country Mill. Mr. Bentz’s Mid purefire came up on the Wagon from Balto & we took it off & put it in the Mill. All well. Saturday, September 5 Weather warm. Jacob & I worked all day getting the Mid purefire to pieces & takeing it up stairs & rebuilding it. Done some little grinding in Country Mill. Business very dull today. Afternoon Azel Mercer & I walked down to Spauldings while there Jacob & Mr. Willis came from there. Returned home with Mr. Mercer & he took tea with us. Monday, September 7 Weather quite warm. We were busy all day working on the new Mashinery to run the new Boalt. We sawed one Log for John Mercer. Business tolerable good today but the most we have to Credit. We had a very pleasant Company this eve. Tuesday, September 8 Weather thretening rain a gust pased around this morning & another this eve. Jacob & I worked all day on the Pulles & shafting for the Mid purefire. There is a good deal of work about it before we get it runing We rec another letter from Mr. Banks about money. Wednesday, September 9 Weather pleasant. Jacob & I worked all day getting the machinery ready to drive the Mid purefire. Cullie Bentz is helping us part of the time. Bus very dull today. Money is very tite & not much to do in the Mill. Have aplenty of flour on hand. Thursday, September 10 Weather pleasant. We were busy all day working at the Purefire get the machinery ready to drive it. We find it quite a job to get it in running order more work then we expected. Bus quite dull today. All well. Friday, September 11 Weather very close & warm. We worked all day at the same work. We will not get it done this week. I sent Andrew Banks 186.84 a note of that amount to apply on our Mortgage. Wednesday, September 16 Weather wet all day. The River has been up pretty well all day. Jacob & I worked in the Mill together all day. We have it all finished except some spouting. We finished putting up in running order the Mid Purefire & gave it a trial on spend it appears to be all right. Business very good today one or two little lots of wheat came in. Family all well. Saturday, September 19 Weather pleasant. Jacob & I worked all day putting in Baring for Riss Wheal saw Mill & we find it quite a job to get the old one out & the new one in. The Country Mill ran all day on grists. Maggie came up today. All well. Sunday, September 20 Weather quite rainy all the forenoon. Water got quite high about the highest we have had this year. Afternoon Jacob & I walked up as far as Morgan Switch. No Church today family all well. Monday, September 21 Weather quite pleasant. We were quite busy today with Plaster & between times we worked at the covering over the tale race from the Merchant Mill. Part of it fell in Saturday evening will have to make most of it new. We had quite a job of it getting the durt out of the water. Tuesday, September 22 Weather pleasant. We were quite busy today. One load of wheat came in, 4 or 5 after Plaster, also 55 Bus corn came in paid 95cts for it & 1.18 for wheat. Ground Plaster all day. What time we had to spare we worked at the new Bridge across the race. We have orders for Meal. All well. Wednesday, September 23 Weather quite pleasant. We worked at the Bridge & puting in or Baring for Saw Mill Shaft. Ground corn all day sent off 1000” to J.S. Gary & Son & Wm. Cleary getting 2.25 delivered or 2.50 at home retail. Family all well Marian is to be married tomorrow. Thursday, September 24 Weather quite pleasant. We worked a while this morning Jacob & I at the Saw Mill. Then we stoped & got ready & wet to Marians wedding & spent the balance of the day. The wedding went off very pleasantly quite a good number present. They got Married just about 12 o’clock. Friday, September 25 Weather pleasant. We finished fixing the Saw Mill at noon and afternoon Jacob & I went to sawing. John & Beam finished the crossing over the Race. We rec a small order of the new Store at Sykesville of 1 Bbl flour & 100 Meal. Family all well. Saturday, September 26 Weather quite pleasant. Jacob & I sawed most all day. Our principal sails today were Plaster will have to grind more Monday first thing. We are about through Millrighting for the present. Family well. Sunday, September 27 Weather cloudy part of the day but no rain. I was about home untill afternoon went to Church Bro. Colb Preached. Capt. C. Mercer spent the evening with us. Tuesday, September 29 Weather quite wet all day. I intended to have went to Balt but did not go on account of the rain. We have been grinding wheat all day. Expect to try Bentz’s Boalt tomorrow. Jacob was with me in the Mill all day fixing up things. All well. Wednesday, September 30 Weather quite pleasant after the rain. We ground wheat & tried the new Mid Purefire today worked very well. 123 Bus wheat came in today paid 1.20 for it very good wheat. Business dull. Family all well. Thursday, October 1 Weather pleasant but cooler then it has been feals a little like frost. We ground & packed all day. The Mid Purefire works very well. Flour moves very slow. We were quite busy all day filling the orders I got yesterday & grinding rye for our own use for sail we get 2.10 per 100”. Pay 88cts for it. One load of corn came in today most of it yellow. Family well except Sallie she is complaining some with her side. Wednesday, October 14 Weather cool and dry. Business dull today in the flour line. Sold some Plaster & 500” Meal to Wm. Cleary at 2.25 delivered. I put up our new Stove in the Dineing Room & fixed my wood shed. I want to get it covered if I can. Beam went away this eve to Frederick. All well. Thursday, October 15 Weather cool it froze ice last night on still water. I have been alone all day. Beam went away last night. I had a very good day today for flour sold 7 Bbls. I went to Balto to get Cloth for the Mill got No. 13 paid 3.85 per yard. Uncle Louis Slicer died this morning. I did not get to see him. I returned in the evening. All well. Sallie, Willie & Maud went to Balt with me today to attend the funreal of Uncle Louis Slicer. He was Berried from Mollie’s at Mt. Ollivett Cemetery. Willie & I walked up to Dr. Fuller’s Church in the morning. From services we went to James to dinner from there back to Lizzie’s & at 5 we left the Depot for home. Weather continues dry but very pleasant weather for this time of the year. I finished the boalting Cloths & got ready to commence grinding. Business continues dull. Charlie commenced school today at Mr. William’s School, Howard County. We ran the Mill all day on wheat. Had to change the idea of hot Boalt & run up Hopperbay. We were quite busy all day. 177 Bus wheat gave 1.15 per Bu it is very good wheat. Sold 5 Bbl flour & 200 Meal (new) today & some feed. Water is very low but we have about all we need. Friday, November 13 Weather cool & thretening weather a little snow fell but not enough to show on the ground first of the season. Aside from that we were not very busy but have plenty to do most of the time fixing up about the Mills. Family all very well. Friday, November 20 Weather cloudy & wet part of the forenoon. We took up the Plaster Bur & cleaned it to have it ready to grind crush corn. I had to reset the Balance Ring it was loose. Some grinding came in for Country Mill. Sent 2 Bbls flour to Balto. Jas. H. Today was Thanks Giving day we did not work but I had to stay about the Mill had some calls for feed. Mr. R.M. Fuller our Neighbour sold out & left us. We felt sorry to part with him. Tuesday, December 1 Weather quite wintery quite a little flerry of snow about the first of the season not much wind but quite cold. We ran the corn Mill until after dinner then we went to sawing. Business quite dull today had some little inquirey for flour but no sails. Wednesday, December 2 Weather quite pleasant for this time of year. We ran the Saw Mill all day. Business better today. We filled an order of Jas. H. Hopkins of 5 Bbls flour & 200” Meal. We are sawing Logs on [--] one half for sawing. All well. Thursday, December 3 Weather pleasant but thretening rain did rain a little in the evening. Mr. Day brought a load of B Wheat to have ground. We finished sawing this afternoon. Business tolerable good today. Family all well. Friday, December 4 Weather pleasant. We got ready to go to grinding B. Wheat but had to stop to shell & grind corn to fill an order of 500” Meal for J.S. Gary & Son. Sold 4 Bbls flour to J. Gannon at 25$. We have been busy all day running up B. Wheat & shelling & grinding corn. Family all well. Saturday, December 5 Weather cool. We ran all day on Buckwheat for L. Day & beat homney. I had a little time this afternoon & I commenced a little Back Porch which is very much needed. We sent J.S. Gary 500 lbs Meal at 1.95. All well Sunday, December 6 Weather quite pleasant in the forenoon but not so pleasant in the after part of the day. Commenced raining in the evening. We had Preaching in the afternoon by Rev. Clem. Not very many out Preached a very good sermon. Family all well. Monday, December 7 Weather a little cloudy but no rain it rained most all last night. We Killed our Hogs today I did not help I was busy all day in the Mill grinding Buckwheat. I sold some feed & ingaged 4 Bbls R.R.E. All well. Tuesday, December 8 Weather cool & clear. We finished grinding Buckwheat & crushed & ground some corn. Jacob cut up our Hogs. The Hogs averaged 244 lbs makeing about 1950 lbs in all. They are very fine hogs but I do not think it pays to raise hogs here where all the feed is to be bought. Wednesday, December 9 Weather cool but rather a pleasant day. Business very dull all day. Sawed 1 Log all the work we have in the Mill to do. I salted my Meat down Mr. Azel Mercer did it for me. I got a Hine quarter of Beaf today of Gibson at 8. All well. Thursday, December 10 Weather cool but pleasant. I sold 4 Bbls R.R. Ex. To Mr Jas. Price today 5.62½ per Bbl. Wm. Mathews commenced to hall over some wheat to have ground. I clean ground & packed at 30cts per Bbl. What spare time I had I worked at my Back Porch. All well. Friday, December 11 Weather cool but clear. Business was very dull today. E.J. Peddicord came over & paid his Bill. J.M. Warfield brought 2 Logs to be sawed that is about all that has been done today. I was busy all day finishing my Back Porch. All well. Saturday, December 12 Weather cool but pleasant. We done some little business today & some grinding. Exchanged some wheat for flour. We gave for good wheat 39 Bbls flour & 13 Bbls feed per 1 Bus wheat. We sold one bbl Hall Ex at 5.00. All well. Sunday, December 13 Weather cool. No Church today I was about home all day reading. We all spent the evening at Jacob’s. All well. Monday, December 14 Weather pleasant in the morning but the wind got up for a while we had quite a flerry of snow. We ran the Saw Mill all day. A Mr. Hopkins came up today to look at our Store property which we offer for sale. Nothing done. All well. Tuesday, December 15 Weather quite cold. We finished sawing then went to shelling corn then to grinding corn. Business very dull today. I ingaged some yellow corn at 3.50 per bbl. White & yellow corn is worth about the same now. Family all well. Wednesday, December 16 Weather cool all day. I went to Ellicott City to try to sell some flour. I succeeded in selling 20 Bbls to different partes. 5 Bbls to Zimmerman & Shultz, 5 Bbls to J.H. Hunt E. City & 10 Bbls to A.J.P. Tabler same place. I returned in the evening family all well. Thursday, December 17 Weather cool & a little windy. We were busy all day putting up flour & grinding & crushing corn in Country Mill. I sold 1 Bbl flour for cash 6.50 sold 10 ½ on time, but all just as good as cash. All well. Friday, December 18 Weather cold with a little breeze from the North all day. Business tolerable good today. Filled an order of Jas. H. Hopkins of 4 Bbls flour & 200 Meal & sold & exchanged some for. (blank). Have been grinding crushed corn all day for G.A. Beebe. Family all well. Saturday, December 19 Weather cool but pleasant. We had but very little grinding to do today. Business very quite. Mr. G.A. Beebe of New York recently bought R.M. Fuller’s place adjoining ours. Commenced to move his furniture today Sunday, December 20 Weather quite winterty all day snowing & raining. I did not go away from the House all day. Read most of the day today was Preaching day but too wet to turn out. Family all well. Monday, December 21 Weather clear but cold. The ground is covered with snow & looks very much like winter more so then it has up to this time this winter. I was alone most all day & was busy grinding in the Country Mill. All well. Tuesday, December 22 Weather cloudy & wet part of the day. I ingaged a lot of corn of Major Hood at 75cts per Bus. Business tolerable good today sold 3 or 4 Bbls flour at 6.50 Best. We had but very little work to do today. We commenced to get the 10 Bbls flour ready to go tomorrow in Bags. All well. Wednesday, December 23 Weather quite pleasant all day. We were busy all day takeing in corn & wheat & sending off Flour. I rec a letter of W.H. Hopkins wishes to see me in Balto tomorrow in regard to makeing me an offer or Buying an interest in our property. Expect to go in to see him. Thursday, December 24 Weather pleasant except a little windy. Charlie, Willie & I went to Balto today. I went on Business & to get Charlie a suit of cloes. Did not do anything about the property promised to meet again. We returned in the evening. All well. Friday, December 25 Christmas Day Weather very pleasant. We spent the day at home or at Hoods Mills calling on each other and in a very pleasant way. Mr. & Mrs Parmer were up from Washington enjoying the Christmas with us. All well. Saturday, December 26 Weather quite pleasant in the forenoon but clouded up & commenced in the afternoon & showered most of the afternoon. I was about the Mills all day alone. Beam went to Balto. I ran the Country Mill most all day on corn & rye. Family all well. Sunday, December 27 Weather rather cold & rain. No Church today so I spent the day about Hoods Mill. Jacob, Mr. Parmer, Mr. W.B. Willis Jr. & my self spent most of the forenoon in the Mill Office talking. Family all well. Monday, December 28 Weather cloudy & damp & very warm. I was alone in the Mill all day. Beam did not get home until late this eve. Charlie helped me all day. I fixed the Boalting Cloth & commenced to grind Wm. Mathews wheat. I was quite busy all day. Family all well. Tuesday, December 29 Weather dry & cool. We had quite a pleasant party at our house last night. Lasted until most Midnight. We have been grinding & Boalting Wm. Mathews wheat. We have been grinding it by the Bbl ( 30cts per bbl) Wednesday, December 30 Weather quite cool & windy. We finished grinding Wm. Mathews wheat. A load of corn & a load of B. Wheat came to be ground. Business not very brisk. I am not fealing very well I have sore throat & Teath ache. I went to the Dentist & had one & a stump taken out. All well except myself. Thursday, December 31 Weather cold and clear thawed some in the sun. We finished packing & cleaning up Wm. Mathews flour. We ground a lot of wheat 76 Bus by the Bbl 30 cts per Bbl & He furnished Bbls. I find it does not pay to grind small lots at that price. Running Country Mill all day on corn chop for A. Hewett Well I feal that I have great reason at the close of another year to be very thankfull to my good Lord for his many Blessings both temporal & spiritual during the year past. He has spared our lives & fed & clothed us all that we need in this world.
