We worked in the Mill all day grinding. We had two orders one of W.T. Weller Woodstock Meal and feed and another of Mr. C.T. Canby of Ellicott City for flour and meal. Aside from those orders Business is rather dull except some exchangeing. Well I am happy to say the New year finds us all well with prospects fair for the future good. I pray that the good Lord will keep us all through this year as He did in years pased. Wednesday, January 2 Weather rather thretning but did not rain any untill after dark. We had a little snow squall from the N.W. but did not last long cleared off and was very cold late in the evening.Business was very dull all day. I find most everybody complaining of dull times. We ran the Mill all day on Midlings. We are not very busy but want to get ahead for fear of a freeze up. Ella is still home from school. She is not very well. Thursday, January 3 Weather cold but did not freeze very much through the day but dos at nights. We had another very dull day in business. We ran the Mill all day on Midlings and Hominy. Nelson went out to try and collect but did not get anything except promises. I thought that better then nothing these times. I am in hopes business will get better soon. I am very thankfull that we are all well and that it is as well with us as it is. Friday, January 4 Weather quite wintery today. It commenced to snow in the night and did not stop untill nearley noon about 6 or 8 in fell. Cleared off about noon and got more mild. We started to grind but had to stop the water got so low. Business continues rather dull. Great complaint thoughout the country about dull times. Everything appears to shrink in value and most people has to do business on a declineing market. All well. Saturday, January 5 Weather cold and windy. I went to Frederick and took Willie with me to get him his shoes also Charlie a pare & some other things. I also had to go to Bank pay our Taxes &c. We went and came on the cars as it was so cold did not go in the Buggy. Business was tolerable good today in the Mill but as the cold weather continues have not let the water in on the Wheal yet. Ella and Mamie Spalding is still home with us but intend going home in the morning to school. Ella back to her school in Frederick and Mamie back to hers at home in Hood’s mill. Sister Eliza is still living at Hood’s Mill. Monday, January 7 Weather continues quite cold. Ella went back to school this morning. I went to Baltimore. I went on the Way trane as far as Ellicott City. I wanted to stop along the Road to see some partys. I stoped about one Hour at the Mills then went in on the Mail. I sold 10 Bbls flour and some meal to A.J.P. Tabler. I stoped at Bro. James all night. They are in a little business where they are all living. They are all well. Tuesday, January 8 Weather cold but not quite as cold as yesterday. I stoped all night with Bro. James. I was busy all day calling on my friends and getting some things and seeing after some commition men. I spent the day very pleasantly and returned in the evening. I find business rather dull in Baltimore. Considerable complaint about hard times but it looks lively to one going from the country. All well. Wednesday, January 9 Weather more mild today little misty most of the day. We would have let in the water and went to work but several partes cuting ice on the Race & would make it bad to run on account of stuck ice and bad for them. We sent a Bbl of flour and meal to Ellicott City today. Some 200 Bus wheat came in today & yesterday paid 1.33 a little more then it is worth but it is very good wheat. All well. Thursday, January 10 Weather cloudy and misty all day commenced to get milder yesterday evening. We started up early this morning finished grinding wheat then went on corn. We weighed something over 200 Bus wheat today paid 1.33 for it. We had an order of J.S.G. & Son for 500 Meal sent that and 10 Bbls family to J.R. Hadgers(?) & Co. Balto. Business was a little more lively today. Family all well. Friday, January 11 Weather pleasant overhead but very sloppy. The [--] weather is takeing away the snow very fast most of it is all gone now on the sunny side of the Hills. Business was tolerable good for exchangeing and credit but very little money coming in. I sent 10 Bbls family to Balto to C.E. Stine & Co. The flour and wheat market continues very dull on the decline most all the time. Family all well. Saturday, January 12 Weather quite pleasant for a wintery day. There is still some snow to be seen on the North side of the Hills and noles but the Sun was quite pleasant. I went to Frederick. I saw Ella. She was out with me to get some things. She is well. I went and came by Mail train. Business very dull. The present prospects is for low prices for wheat and flour. I want to work off as fast as I can my stock on Hand. All well. Sunday, January 13 Weather very pleasant in the morning but it clouded up and got cool and commenced to rain in the evening. I took a short walk in the morning but as it clouded up I did not go away from home any more all day. I spent the time reading. There was preaching at 3 in the afternoon but I did not think there would be any as the weather was so thretning. All well. Monday, January 14 Weather pleasant but it was very mudy as it rained all last night. The water was running over the fore bay when I came to the mill. Business was pretty good today. I sold 2 tons feed to J.M. Delashmutt Cooksville at 20$ per ton. I pay ½ freight. We also sent Hadgins & Co. 15 bbls family to sell for us. We have been running on wheat all day. [--] brought the bal. Of corn. All well. Tuesday, January 15 Weather rather changeable the Sun at times came out quite pleasant and then it would go under a cloud and with the wind from the N.W. would be quite cold. We have been quite busy today. We sent J.W. Delashmutt 2 tons @ 20$ at mill I paid ½ freight. Also got an order of A.A. Fahey for 5 Bbls family. He also sent me 75 dollars on apc. I settled up with Thos. Crawford. I owe but very little now to any one. All well. Wednesday, January 16 Weather pleasant cool and mostly clear it froze but very little last night. Business continues very dull. I think the principal cause of all the trouble in the country is owing to the unsettled state of finances which Congress now is trying to settle and I am afraid the moneyed class will rule to the disadvantage of two thirds at least of the people in this country. All well. Thursday, January 17 Weather quite pleasant all day. We had a very good retail trade at the Mill but none to go away. The flour and wheat market continues very dull no life appearantly in it. We ran all day on wheat. Some work came in to do last of the week. Sallie went to Frederick to see Ella and pay her tuition. Have been thinking takeing her out of school after this month. All well. Friday, January 18 Weather very pleasant almost like a Spring day. Business continues very dull in the flour Market as well as the wheat Market. In fact it is the general complaint in every branch of business. We have been running all day on wheat. This afternoon on some wheat of Mr. [--]. I settled today with Mr. R.T. Norwood by takeing a Note in his favor given by J.T. & J.W. Montgomery 25$. Family all well. Saturday, January 19 Weather very pleasant except very mudy. It was very foggy this morning and the fog turned to frost and turned the trees and ground white with frost. Business tolerable good but I am afraid I will lose considerable owing to the fall in wheat and flour and we do not know how low it will go as the War in Europe is about over. We must trust in providence. Family all well. Sunday, January 20 Weather cloudy and wet all day consequently we had no Sunday School and Class. I did not go out all day but spent the time reading till late bed time. I am reading for the second time Paradice….. I am very much pleased with the Book. We had Mrs. Rinehart & Mrs Thompson come in in the evening. Family all well. Monday, January 21 Weather cloudy and foggy all day but not much rain but very mudy. Business very good at the Mill today also an order or two but the Market in Balto is still very dull alltho wheat was about 2cts better Sunday. I am in hopes as we have almost enough wheat to last till Harvest that wheat & flour will not come any lower. Family well. Tuesday, January 22 Weather pleasant but very mudy. Charlie & I rode to Frederick this morning. I went up to see why I was summoned to appear at Cort February next for. I found it was for a Note Jacob gave in the name of McComas & Bro. dated May 6, 1875. I had no interest in it. I am afraid it will give me trouble. Will have to go to Balto to see about it. Business continues very dull. Family well. Wednesday, January 23 Weather quite windy and cold all day quite a change from yesterday. We sent off the Bill of Meal and feed W.T. Weller ordered a few days ago to Woodstock. Aside from that Business has been dull. I agreed with J.N.W. to take 500 Bus wheat to be priced any time between April 1st to 15th May next to price it. I think I am safe enough to do that. Wheat is worth today about 1.20. Family well. Thursday, January 24 Weather cold and windy but not quite so bad as yesterday. I went to Balto today to see about the Suit. This is interest against me for a promisory Note given by Jacob after our disolution without consulting me about it. I don’t know that I accomplished anything. I saw the partys they were not willing to compromise. I do not know what to do about it. I returned in the evening. All well. Friday, January 25 Weather very pleasant today with the exception of it being a little cloudy. I expect we will have falling weather soon. I wrote to Jacob today about the Note of R.W.L. Ransom & Co. I do not expect he will answer it. I expect I will have to stand the blunt. Oh, that I was a free man once more. The most if not all my troubles have been caused by others. Have been takeing in wheat all day of N.J. Worthington. Family all well. Saturday, January 26 Weather quite pleasant except it is a little windy. I have been busy on wheat and country work all the week grinding all day and untill bed time. Business has been tolerable good. Our retail trade has been very good. I am in hopes we will be able to work out the stock so we will not loose any more on it will not buy any more wheat till we do. All well. Sunday, January 27 Weather cloudy and rained some in the evening. I did not go far away from home all day but spent the day reading mostly. I am not feeling very well over that Note apc of Jacob’s but I hope it will all come out all right in the end but these are very hard times to have to pay other peoples Notes. Family all well. Ella still away. Monday, January 28 Weather cloudy and cold wind from the North. We hung up our Meat this afternoon. I also went to Mt. Airy to see Mr. Dorsey about an apc. He settled it by paying some money and giving a Note for the Bal. I got some seeds to plant in the yard I brought them home with me. Business continues very dull. We have been grinding wheat all day. All well. Tuesday, January 29 Weather cool but not so very unpleasant for this season of the year good healthy weather. We had an order of J.S.G. & Son of 25 Bbls family in Bbls and 5 Bbls in Bags. I charged the same as last and I am afraid they will not like it as flour has come down some since but that is about as low as we can sell it. The wheat cost 1.35 for the most of it. Business continues dull. All well. Wednesday, January 30 Weather dry and quite cold all day alltho the Sun tryed to come out but soon got tired. Business tolerable good today. We had an order of Mr. A.A. Fahey for 5 Bbls family. He also paid his Bill. Another small Bill came in of Jenkins that has been standing for a long time. Mrs Rinehart had her sail today. She is going to move to Ellicott City. We have been running on wheat al day. All well. Thursday, January 31 Weather quite wintery. It commenced snowing last night and has been snowing all day and is getting about 6 or 8 in deep. Messers Clark & Coover returned count sails today for the flour we sent them Dec 14 last. Ella came home today. Saturday, February 2 Weather cloudy but no falling weather the ground is still covered with snow. I am in hopes we will have good weather now as they say the signs is good. We have been busy all day grinding over & choping. We sent Weller his feed & chop as he ordered a few days ago. Aside from that Business has been dull excepting exchangeing and some little retail trade. Family all well. Sunday, February 3 Weather pleasant for a wintery day. The ground is covered with snow and rite good sleighing. Went to Church in the morning being quarterly meeting. Had a good attendance. Bro. Downs officiated. They took up a collection to try and raise the balance of the subscription and sucseeded in doing so or nearly so. I remained in the House the remaninder of the day. All well. Monday, February 4 Weather pleasant for a wintery day. I went to Frederick to engage a Lawyer in the case of R.W.L. Ransom & Co. the debt Jacob continued while I was in California. I made a porposition when I was in Balto to them and I found on my arrival home they had taken me up. So I have the thing mixed now. Charlie has now gon to Frederick to see the Lawyer to drop the case. Tuesday, February 5 Weather quite pleasant over head but as the ground is still covered with snow the walking is bad. We sent 25 Bbls family to R.W.L. Raisin & Co. to satisfy an old clame they held against McComas & Bro. contracted for while I and family were in California and Jacob was in partners with L.W. Selby. But they done business in the name of McC & Bro. hence they came on me as they would not pay it. Wednesday, Febuary 6 Weather very pleasant but the ground is still covered with snow. We are grinding Rye yet. Thought it best to grind it & ship it as we have no sale here for it. I shipped about 12 Bbls about all we will have to send away to Balto. to Geo M. Ehrmann today. Business not very brisk. Some little grinding also a small load corn. I paid 50 cts per Bu for it. That is about the top of the Market. Ella has not returned to school yet. I had to pay 6$ for Coal delivered at Ijamsville. I bought 12 tons. Business continues very dull but I hope we will be able to work off what stock we have without much loss. All well. Friday, February 8 Weather cloudy and wet all day. We tride our new tin spout and had a good deal of trouble before it would work but kept at it untill it worked. I put it up to work the wheat over so we can give it double cleaning. I think it will help the flour. We had an order of A.A. Fahey for some flour & Meal. That was about all the Bus. of the day. Business continues just tolerable but I do not mean to complain has been rather good today the local part, but to ship to Balto there is nothing in it. The Commition men there will not return what they get for it by that means it will not pay to ship flour to them. I am depending entirely on my local trade. All well. Wednesday, February 13 Weather quite pleasant. We have been running on wheat all day. Trade tolerable good today some sales at home and an order of W.T. Weller for 600” Meal and 20 Bus shipstuff to go to Granite near Woodstock. The principal objection to Weller he keeps the bags out so long I find it a great draw back in Milling to loose so many Bags. The wheat and flour market is very flat owing to the close of the War & the large crop on hand. All well. Thursday, February 14 Weather cloudy and has been snowing most all day but melted as fast as it fell. Business tolerable today. We sent off the feed and meal that W.T. Weller ordered a day or so ago. Owing to some war news wheat & flour has stiffened a little bit I do not think there will be any more war at present.
