It snowed a little this forenoon but I think it will turn to rain. Well the good Lord be thanked. He has let us enter on another New Year and my prayer is that He will keep us as safely through this year as He has in the last and I hope we may all try and be better as we grow older. Nelson G. Jones left us today gon with J.D. Sharer. Business very good today have been running all day on country Bur. Thursday, January 2 Weather today has been very changeable. At one time I thought it was going to get warm but the wind got round to the North and blew quite hard for a while and got very cold. I had to stop just before dark and shut the water out. I miss Nelson very much. One can not get along alone very well. I have felt very lonesome without him. Business was not very brisk today. I sent off some 40 Bus S. Stuff for W.T. Weller Woodstock. Charlie has not come home yet. Maggie went to school today. All well. Friday, January 3 Weather intensely cold the coldest day I ever remember. I thought I would almost freeze going from the Mill to the House. The wind commenced last eve and blew very hard from the North West. I did not dare to let the water on the wheal today. Business was very good today 25 Bbls to Ilchester besides some trade at home. I trust I feal very thankfull for it. Charlie is still away and I was very busy alone. Family all well. Saturday, January 4 Weather still very windy and cold. Last night was very cold I thought the coldest of the season. Ella was to have gone up to school on the Mail this morning Miss Hattie Williams with her but owing to the high wind we thought it best for them to wate till Monday. Charlie is still away. I did not think he was going to stay so long. Business very light today owing to it being so cold. Family all well. Sunday, January 5 Weather continues very cold and windy considered the coldest spell we have had in the state for ten years. I did not go out of the house all day and found it almost imposible to keep warm by the Stove. Charlie came home last night. He made quite a stay in Baltimore he does not get down very often. We all kept in the house today owing to the cold. The wind still keeps high from N.W. All well. Monday, January 6 Weather continues very cold but the wind is not quite so strong. Ella went back to school today. Miss Hattie Williams did not gp back with her owing to being taken with a very sore throat and some fever. I hope it will not be serious. Business was very good today the exchangeing part. Not many much in sails but some enquire from below in regard to price of flour. I am not running yet on account of the cold. Family all well. Tuesday, January 7 Weather more pleasant it has been thretening snow most all day and the appearance of better weather no strong wind today like it has been. Business tolerable good today. I got the order up to go away tomorrow 6 Bbls family to W.T.W. Granite. He is one of my best customers. I am still alone in the Mill. Charlie is at school and Olley has not come yet. I have not let the water on the wheal yet. We hered from Ella. She arrived safe. All well. Wednesday, January 8 Weather quite pleasant today the wind has got around to the S.E. I began to grind today on Midlings. I have been quite busy on exchangeing principally. I filled an order of Mr. W.T. Weller 6 Bbls family 3 Bbls of it in 1/8 Bags. I had an agent of one of the Purifier firms to see me want to sell a Purifier. I engaged some cloth for the Head on our Reel enough to cloth about 7 feet of No. 13. Family all well. Thursday, January 9 Weather quite wet. It rained all last night but not very fast but enough to raise the water up pretty well. I ran all last night and today on corn and Hominy. Business very dull except some little at home. Oliver Plane commenced work for us today at 50 dollars a year and Board. He is to get his washing & mending at home. I am in hopes that he will get along very well. Family all well. Ella is back in school.. Friday, January 10 Weather rather pleasant today. It has been thawing most of the day. We got ready this morning and went to grinding Pan Midlings we have a large pile to grind. Have been wateing for the purifier I ordered some time ago. Business has been very good today mostly at home. I am very well pleased with my new Man so far. He appears quite willing to do what I tell him. Got an order of T.B. Mercer for ½ ton feed send tomorrow. Family all well. Saturday, January 11 Weather rather thretening today and colder then yesterday and at present it is snowing. We had to cut the wheal loose this morning before we could start the Mill. The wheal is too close to the Wall soon freezes fast. We have been grinding Midlings all day but will have to stop rather earley this evening as it mite freeze too much ice to the wheal. Charlie went to town to get wheal fixer. Business not quite so brisk today. Family all well. Sunday, January 12 Weather cold we had snow today and is rather wintery. We had Sabbath School and Preaching this morning but very few out. The Rev. Thos. Crawford preached. I did not go out any more except to feed and milk as the Boys were away. I spent the time reading most of the time. Very quiet about Ijamsville today. The weather is too bad to get about very much. The ground is covered with a lite snow. all well. Monday, January 13 Weather rather pleasant over head and the Sun is warm and pleasant. We started after breakfast but had to cut the wheal loose first. I did not have very much to do as the water was all shut out Saturday night. The wheal runs too close to the sides causes it to freeze tight so soon. Business was very slack today very little doing. We have been running on Rye and Buckwheat all day. Rye flour is a very dull sale. Family all pretty well. Tuesday, January 14 Weather rather pleasant over head. The snow and ice is disappearing has been thawing most all day. Business tolerable good today an order of 10 Bbls family and 400” Meal from Jas. Kennedy & Co. besides some little trade at home. Two Deaths last night Old Col. Montgomery and Mr. Aden Anderson’s Bro. The Rev. James Crawford is quite sick not expected to live. In the midest of Life we are in the midest of death a very true saying. My family all well thanks to the good Lord. Wednesday, January 15 Weather rather changeable it was pleasant for a while this forenoon but looks very much like winter this evening as it is snowing quite fast and the ground is already covered with snow. We have had but very little good weather this month. Business tolerable good today but an order to fill tomorrow for W.T. Weller 3 Bbls family and 300” Meal but can not fill the order for Meal [--] [--] any corn will send what I have grinding corn all day yellow. Thursday, January 16 Weather not so cold today or changeable. It has been thawing most of the day. Business has been rather light today owing to the thretening weather. I did not send away the flour and Meal that was to go away today. I sat up last night with Rev. Jas. Crawford. I think he is better. He rested very well last night. I walked over and back found the walking very bad. We finished grinding all the corn on hand then went to grinding wheat. Maggie is not so well this evening. Friday, January 17 Weather quite pleasant over head to what it has been. We had quite a thaw today. We are running on wheat ran all last night very good head water but the Race is full of ice. Trade tolerable good today with the R.R. Men yesterday was pay day. Willie and I went to Fred’k went on the cars. Too bad to ride the Buggy. I wanted to pay taxes and get some things for the House. I also paid the insurance on the Mill. Family all tolerable well. Saturday, January 18 Weather cold and wintery but not quite so cold as it has been. We have been grinding wheat all day. I left Charlie in the Mill while I went to Frederick I had some business there to attend to, ought to have been attended to sooner but I could not leave as Nelson is away and Charlie is at school and I do not like to keep him home from school but will after this term is up. Family all pertty well. Sunday, January 19 Weather quite wintery and cold. We had Sunday School and Preaching this afternoon at our Ijamsville Church but not very good attendance owing to the cold weather. There was also prayer meeting in the evening but I did not go out any more spent most of the time reading. I have my Richmond Religious Paper and I generally look it over on Sunday. Sallie is not so well but is still able to get about. Monday, January 20 Weather cold but clear but it did not thaw but very little today. I turned the water off the wheal last evening and did not turn it on today as it was so cold and not very busy. The Purifier of the Keyser came on the Way trane today. I am in hopes it will work to satisfaction and be a grate advantage to making flour better and more of it as it clames to be. Business was very light today. Family all pretty well. Tuesday, January 21 Weather quite cold all day. I did not let in the water as it is so cold and we are putting in the Purifier and we all have to help. I would like to get it up before I start as the water is off and the weather is so cold it has been freezeing all day. Business has been quite dull today some little trade with the Railroad men. I am in hopes business will get better soon. All well. Wednesday, January 22 Weather quite pleasant in the afterpart of the day. We let on some water and went to chopping as we had some little on hand to do. An order came for flour and shipstuff to go off tomorrow. We got it up ready. Keyser is at work at his Purifier. I help him when I have time. I am anxious to get the thing up so I can go to grinding. Our flour is getting down to what it was. Business tolerable good today. Family well. Thursday, January 23 Weather quite pleasant today. Almost like Spring. The ice is disappearing very fast. We are very busy attending to the mill and heklping about the Purifier. We are getting [along] very well with it. I made the dust Room to dry between times. I am in hopes it will work to advantage and will give satisfaction as it is now in. We sent Weller flour and feed today. Some little trade at home all well. Friday, January 24 Weather not quite so warm today but still thawing some. We did not run the mill today did not have any thing to grind except wheat and we are so near ready with the Purifier. I want to start that now when we start on wheat again. We got along with it very well today. We have it now all ready to go to work if nothing happens.. Will start it tomorrow. Ella wrote me today that she wants to join the Church. Saturday, January 25 Weather quite pleasant all day about the most pleasant day we have had for a long time. We started on wheat last night about 7 O’clock with the new Purifier. It appears to work tolerable well. I am in hopes it will be quite an addition to the making of good flour and saveing it from getting out with the feed. He got all through with it and went away this evening. Business not very brisk today. Family all well. Sunday, January 26 Weather cool but pleasant. We had Sunday School and Church this morning but not very many out to the Sunday School. The weather is most too cold for the children to turn out. They do not turn out in the country like they do in the city. I spent the rest of the day reading. We are all very glad to hear of Ella’s conversion. I hope the rest of the children will soon follow her. Monday, January 27 Weather rather pleasant today at times it was quite warm. The wind has been from the South. We are running on wheat all day. I am of the opinion the Purifier will be an advantage. Business rather quite. Order for ½ ton feed. Two loads corn came in (white). We were out of white corn and had to turn off some orders. Family all pretty well thanks to the good Lord. Tuesday, January 28 Weather quite pleasant but has the appearance of rain. I ran the Mill all night on corn and I feal rather under the weather today. We have been grinding Mid and Hominy all day. Business very dull today. We sent off the ½ ton feed ordered yesterday to Mr. T.B. Mercer. Another load corn came in today paid 45cts for it too much but I had to have it. Family all pretty well. Wednesday, January 29 Weather pleasant the ice and snow is about all gone. The weather has been so moderate that the ice and snow pased off without any flud or very high water. We have been grinding Midlings all day and cleaning some wheat running up some corn &c. Business was tolerable good today. Messers J.S. Gary & Son ordered 30 Bbls 20 in Bbls 5 in Bags & 5 in 1/8 sacks. Aside from that business was not very brisk. Family all pretty well. Thursday, January 30 Weather pleasant but not quite so warm as it was but has been thawing all day. It froze the ground pretty hard last night. Charlie ran the Mill till midnight then shut down. I started early this morning on wheat with the Purifier in. I really can not say that I am fully convinced that the purifier is of any or much good. I am not satisfied with it. I expect that Ella will come home and go to school with Prof Thompson. She wants to come home. I wrote her to do as she thought best. Friday, January 31 Weather pleasant but not quite as warm as it has been but has been thawing all day. Charlie ran last night on wheat till midnight. I have been running all day. Will have to stop after this evening to do some crushing. Business tolerable good today two small orders to fill down the Road, flour and meal and some exchangeing. The flour market has been a little stronger for some time past. All well. Saturday, February 1 Weather quite changeable and cold it snowed some has been freezeing most all day. Trade was tolerable good today filled an order of 6 Bbls flour and 500” Meal and the trade at home was very good. We have been running on country work all day or nearly so. Charlie & Mr. Shipley went to town in the Buggy. We took up the wheat Bur washed and dressed it a little before he went away. Ella did not come home as we expected. All well. Sunday, February 2 Weather very cold and windy. The wind commenced last evening and blew very hard all night and all day today. I did not go out all day excpet in the evening to feed as I generally have the work to do on Sunday evening. There was Sunday School and Class in the morning so I was told but I was not there. I did not suppose there would be any as it was so cold. I spent the day reading. All well. Monday, February 3 Weather quite cold but not quite so cold this afternoon as it was in the morning and last night. The race is froze over again. We did not start the mill till this noon running on corn. Business tolerable good an order of J.S.G. & Son for 5 Bbls family and 3 Bbls Rye flour to go to Fred’k at 3 dollars per Bbl to J.S.W. Jabow. Exchangeing tolerable good also. Ella has concluded to stay at the school where she is Burkittsville. She is well. I rec’d a letter from her today. All well. Tuesday, February 4 Weather cold but not as cold as it was a few days ago but has thawed but little all day. Water has been rather low today. I started to grind corn and make Hominy but had to stop and take out the corn Bur and run alone on Hominy. I found I would do much better working one at a time. We took the corn Bur up washed and dressed it. Business tolerable good. An order of Weller for 200 Bus S.S. and 2 Bbl family to go tomorrow. Sallie is rather unwell. Wednesday, February 5 Weather very wintery all day. It commenced to snow about 6:30 this morning and fell to about 4 in deep. I stayed up all last night and ran the mill on Hominy and meal. I took the Bur out and ran on Hominy alone and found I gained time by it. We have been running on corn and cleaning wheat all day today. Business tolerable good today. Filled two small orders to go away and at home was tolerable good. Sallie is quite unwell but able to get about. Thursday, February 6 Weather wintery all day but rather soft did not freeze but very little last night. I did not run last night untill about 10 O’clock but started tolerable early this morning on wheat and have been running all day and also cleaning wheat. Business was very slack today excepting a little trade and exchangeing. Ma is something better today but she is not strong. I hope she will get entirely well again. The wheat and flour market is strong family 5 dollars per Bbl wheat 1.06 Bus. Friday, February 7 Weather quite pleasant over head but as the ground is covered with snow and is melting makes the walking quite bad. I ran the Mill all last night on wheat. Charlie took my place at 4 this morning. I then went to bed. I want to keep up the grinding and not get behind if I can. Business tolerable good today. One ton feed ordered of N. Henderson and some small sales. Sallie appears more cherfull today. Saturday, February 8 Weather quite cold last night froze some. We ran the mill all last night on wheat but had to stop for a little while on account of slush ice. Business tolerable brisk exchangeing and &c. today. We sent off Mr. Henderson’s feed 1 ton some few orders. A load corn came yellow paid 40cts per Bus it was very good and dry. We are chopping now this evening. I saw Bro. March today. He promised to preach for us Sunday & Tuesday Evenings next. All well. Sunday, February 9 Weather clear but cool did not thaw very much today. We had quite a good Sunday School this morning and preaching at night by the Rev. Mr. Kolb the commencement of a protracted meeting. A good many was out but I thought there was not a very good indication of much of a cerous feeling alltho a very quiet meeting. It was given out that our Baptist Preacher would preach for us Monday & Tuesday next. We all went out in the evening. Monday, February 10 Weather cold and frosty froze quite hard last night. We started on wheat early this morning then started on Midlings will run on them all night. Business was very dull all day today. I settled with Mr. N.J. Worthington and engaged more Rye. I may want it in the Spring for chop but it is a very slow sale at present. Family all well except Ma she is not so well. Tuesday, February 11 Weather quite wet all day and very mudy. Bro. March preached for us last night in the Methodist Church. Very good attendance and we all thought a very fine discorse about the best I think I have hered for a long time. He is to preach again tonight if the weather is not too wet but does not look very much like clear weather tonight. Grinding flour Mid today. Family all well. Wednesday, February 12 Weather cool but rather pleasant it rained pretty much all last night and the water was pretty well up this morning but no flud to do any damage. The fore bay was full up but we did not have to shut out. We did not run all last night ran late and early. Trade just tolerable good today no orders from below. Some wheat came up for exchange from Mr. Arrington. Sallie went to town. Rev. Mr. March went home. All well. Thursday, February 13 Weather cool but pleasant. We finished grinding poor Midlings made 24 Bbls of tolerable good Ex. I want to send it off to Balto tomorrow. We have but very little sale for that kind of flour here in the country. We had an order came for 40 Bus Shipstuff and 2 Bbls family in 1/8 sacks to go off tomorrow to Granite. We are on corn now. We took up the Mid Bur washed it and put it in face. Family all pretty well. Friday, February 14 Weather more pleasant in the afterpart of the day. Sallie and Maud went up on the Mail to see Ella and stop a day or so. I know we will miss them so very much but Ella has been so very anxious to see someone from home. We sent 24 Bbls low grade to Brown Graves & Co Balto. today also 50 Bus S.S. and 2 bbls family to W.T. Weller, ½ Bbl family to J.P. Ritter Hood’s Mill. Aside from that business has not been very brisk. I agreed to take 500 Bus wheat of N.J. Worthington at 1.00 per Bus 48cts for Rye. All well. Saturday, February 15 Weather cold all day last night was a very cold night. The Race is all froze over again. Business very good today in every thing. We had an order of 26 Bbls family to go to Ilchester and the exchangeing was very good. Mr. Thos. Crawford commenced to hall wheat. It was priced a short time after Harvest at $1.00 per Bus and that is just what it is worth today. I engaged about 200 Bus more at that of Mr. L. Smith. Sallie did not come home today. Sunday, February 16 Weather cold all day. Sabbath School and Class in the forenoon and prayer meeting at night. I did not go to the prayer meeting no one home but Maggie and William and I did not like to leave them alone. Ma and Maud is still away at Burkittsville to see Ella. Expect them home tomorrow on the Mail. I find it very lonely without them but I am glad they went on Ella’s account. Her gane was our loss. All well. Monday, February 17 Weather quite wintery all day has been snowing all day and has the appearance of a deep snow. The Agent of the How Babcock & Co. was here today to see me about a Purifier. The one we have in on trial is not giving satisfaction as was agreed upon and I thought it best to order one from them. They also agree to make it give satisfaction. Ma and Maud came home this eve all well and left Ella well. Business tolerable good. Tuesday, February 18 Weather pleasant over head but as the ground is covered with snow the walking is very bad. We ran all last night on wheat. We are getting pretty well up again in our flour. The wheat is good and sound and there is no danger of it sowering even if the weather does turn warm. Business was rather dull today no orders from below some little at home. The wheat and flour market is rather higher for the past few days. All well. Wednesday, February 19 Weather thretening all day with a slight sprinkle of snow. Oliver Plane left today did not want to milk and that was one of the principal things I wanted him for. We will try and get along without any Boy. Charlie thinks we can. Business tolerable good today. We got an order of W.S. Robb for some flour and meal. The Mill there is about to change hands. A man from Balto. is to take it. We ran all last night and today on wheat. All well. Thursday, February 20 Weather wintery all day but not so cold. We ran all night on wheat and all day and expect to run all night tonight tomorrow on Midlings Saturday on country work. Business rather dull today. The wheat and flour market is up some flour 25cts better wheat 7 or 8 cts better in Balto. We are pretty well fixed now for the rise as all the wheat is priced at 1.00 per Bus. and most of it paid for. Family all well. Friday, February 21 Weather rather cold all day. It got so cold last night we had to stop the mill on account of slush ice but started up early this morning again on Mid and have been working on them all day. Some Rye and wheat came in priced 1.00 per Bus for wheat and 48cts for Rye. Business was rather dull today, the going out part, but we were quite busy takeing in wheat & Rye and exchangeing. Maggie got quite a bad fall comeing home from school yesterday. She did not go today but is better. Saturday, February 22 Weather quite wintery all day some little snow but did not lay. The ground is mostly covered with the old snow yet. Today has been rather one of the busy ones. 3 or 4 small orders to fill mostly down the road. Some wheat and Rye came in. We ran all last night on Midlings but did not get quite through but had to stop to go on country work as we have quite a lot to grind. Geo. A. McComas sent us 50 Bbls more today. He has given up the Hood’s Mill property. Family all well. Sunday, February 23 Weather rather cold but the Sun was warm. The snow disappeared quite fast today. It got quite windy in the afternoon wind off from North West and rather cold. I was out to Sunday School and preaching at our Ijamsville Church in the morning. Our Preacher Rev. Mr. Kolb preached his last sermon before Conference. Had a very good turn out both to the school and Church. I stayed at home the remainder of the day. Monday, February 24 Weather rather thretening but not very cold has been thawing about all day. Have been running on corn all day and cleaned some wheat. Expect to run all night on wheat. We loaded 30 Bbls family to go to Brown Graves & Co. tomorrow. They have just sent in apc sales of 24 Bbls low grade and they don so well we thought we would try them on 30 Bbls family. The flour and wheat market has been rather strong for the last week or so. Business rather good today. Family all well. Tuesday, February 25 Weather rather unsettled all day cloudy and thretening. We ran on wheat all last night and all day today and expect to run tonight. Business rather dull today. We sent Kennedy & Co. 300” Meal and 30 Bbls family to Brown Graves & Co Baltimore to sell for us. The flour and grane market is rather strong yet with an advance of 25cts per Bus on flour and about 6 or 7 cts per Bus on wheat. Flour 5.25 and wheat 1.12 the exstream. I rec’d a letter of Ella yesterday. Wednesday, February 26 Weather quite cloudy and dark all day but very little rain as yet but looks very thretening. Business was very dull today but no orders. We are still running night and day mostly on Merchant work. We are looking now for an order of J.S. Gary & Son they just order about the last of each Month. I just hope they will not disappoint us we need there trade. Have none to loose. We are very fortunate so far to have a very good trade. The wheat and flour market is still strong. All well. Thursday, February 27 Weather cold but thawed some in the Sun. We ran all last night on wheat but stoped early this morning and took up the Bur and washed it. We have been running on corn all day. Messers J.S. Gary & Son ordered 25 Bbls family today & Mrs. A.A. Mercer 500” feed. Some trade at the mill some exchangeing and some small sails. We made some little change with the Puley that drives the [--] churn. Put on a larger Pooley and a good deal trouble to get the old pully off. Family all well. Friday, February 28 Weather not quite so cold today has been thawing all day. We have been running on corn all day and cleaning wheat. Will start on wheat again tonight. Another small load Rye came in. We have about 300 Bus now on hand. I am in hopes we will have trade for it in the Spring. Business very dull today very little doing. The wheat and flour market is still strong. Wheat is worth now here about 1.04 per Bus. Family all well. Saturday, March 1 Weather pleasant but cool good healthy weather. Has been thawing all day. We did not run last night but have been running all day on Rye on chop for ourselves. Business has been rather dull today except an order of Mrs Waters, Hood’s Mill for 1 ton feed. Aside from that Business has been very quiet. Charlie went to town this afternoon to get some things and put some money in Bank. Mr. Williams brought in 50 odd Bus wheat paid 1.03 per Bus for it. All well. Sunday, March 2 Weather thretening in the morning and commenced to snow a little after Noon and snowed very fast all the balance of the day and has the appearance of snowing all night. I went to Sunday School and Class in the morning. We had a very good Sunday School also a very good Class meeting not very many out. Mr Riggs called in the afternoon and spent 2 or 3 Hours with us. He is a very pleasant gentleman. All well. Monday, March 3 Weather very pleasant over head today but as it snowed all night we have quite a deep snow say about 8 in deep. We have been chopping all day and the trade at home has been tolerable good. One order of W.S. Robb of 5 Bus feed. Charlie & I have been busy all day in the mill mixing feed &c. We got a very interesting letter of Ella. I am so glad she has got so fond of her Church. She is well. Tuesday, March 4 Weather very pleasant over head all day but it has been very sloppy on account of the melting snow. We carried up the most of our Meat this morniong to get ready to smoke it. It is now full time to get at it to have it finished before the warm weather sits in. We ran on Meal all the forenoon afternoon went to beating Hominy. Took out everything else so we can run with good spead. Business not very brisk today. Family well. Wednesday, March 5 Weather quite pleasant overhead but very muddy as the warm Sun is melting the snow very fast and the frost is comeing out makes the Roads very muddy. I ran the mill all last night till 2:30 O’clock on Hominy then turned on wheat. Business not very brisk today. I went to C.E. Gallagher’s sale after the Mail came up. Charlie ran the mill. They had a very large crowd out and everything sold well. Family all well. Thursday, March 6 Weather rather thretening all day did rain a little. It is bringing the frost out very fast. The water has been quite flush in consequence. We ran all last night on wheat and packed. Charlie came on watch about 1 O’clock. He is a good deal of help to me. Business has been very dull today except a small order of Kennedy & Co. for 2 Bbls family. I started the smoke under our Meat today smokeing it with Hickory wood. All well. Friday, March 7 Weather pleasant and the mud is drying up very fast. Willie just came in the Mill Office and told me that Tom Tiler is dead just died. He is an old Col. Man living in one of the Tenement houses belonging to the State quarey(?) Co.. I feal sorry but I hope that he is better off. It is a debt we have all got to pay. We have been grinding poor Midlings all day. Business tolerable good today in a small way. The wheat and flour market is still strong with an upward tendency. All well. Saturday, March 8 Weather rather changeable all day rained a little at times. I took in about 60 Bus more wheat today at about 1.00 per Bus. I also engaged 5 Piggs at $2 a piece. We have been choping all day. Business is not very brisk rather very dull today except the grinding. I am very much encouraged as the flour and wheat market has advanced very much and we have a good stock on hand. All well. Sunday, March 9 Weather very pleasant all day. One of the best Sundays we have had since before Christmas. Sunday School this morniong and after school preaching by the Rev. Edmondson. Preached a very good plain sermon not a very large attendance. The walking is so bad most of the people do not like to turn out. In the afternoon Messers John Shipley, John Poole & I walked to Mr. ?.M. Riggs and spent an hour or so. Nelson stoped his morning to see us. All well. Monday, March 10 Weather very pleasant about the most pleasant day we have had since the first of last Dec. Business rather dull today. We have been running on wheat most of the day. I was summind on a Coroner’s Inquest to be held over a little girl ( Col. ) that died at Mr. John Linthicum’s a child of about 9 years old. We did not get through on account of it being necessary to have witnesses in the case. Will have to meet again tomorrow. Family all well. Tuesday, March 11 Weather has been very pleasant. Business has been rather good some orders filled and some to fill tomorrow. Today has been rather a lively day about Ijamsville. We got through with the case we were summond on yesterday. We met here and heard the evidence and decided accordingly. One or two other cases for stealing chickens. Alltogether it was quite lively about here. We ran all last night and today on wheat. Expect to run all night tonight. All well. Wednesday, March 12 Weather pleasant except a strong breeze from N.E. We filled Tabler’s order today 10 Bbls flour & 300” Meal flour at 5.50 & meal 1.22 delivered. Freight from this place to Ellicott City 15cts per 100”. Aside from [that] not much doing. We are running night and day on wheat. Bro. March preached for us last night had a good turn out and good sermon. I went to C.E. Worthington sale did not buy any thing nor did I stay long. More quiet about Ijamsville then yesterday. All well. Thursday, March 13 Weather very pleasant. The grass is beginning to show it’s self the last few days. We ran all last night again. I stayed up all last night I do not like to have Charlie lose so much rest. We have been very busy all day. Business has been very good. J.S. Gary & Son ordered 10 Bbls family & Mr. C.W. Harvey agt ordered some meal, feed &c. making it quite a brisk day. Mr. Walker the agt for Purifier here all day. He sent the order for one and some cloth. Family all well. Friday, March 14 Weather pleasant Spring like but looks thretening rain this evening. We ran all night again on wheat. We have about 80 Bbls flour ahead. We are pretty well up with out work. Business not so brisk today. We had two small orders for feed and some little trade at home. Charlie & I took down the spout and dust Room of the Kisor Purifier this afternoon to get ready of a different make. Family all well. Saturday, March 15 Weather rather cooler today but dry and pleasant. Trade not very lively today. We ran all night on wheat but have been running on corn all day. The wheat and flour market is rather off the last day or so especily for wheat the market is rather unsettled. I do not think the market will fluctuate for a while untill the next crop is known about what it will be. Family all well. Sunday, March 16 Weather pleasant but a little cool. We had Sunday School and Class this morning and prayer meeting in the evening but I did not go to prayer meeting. I had some reading to do and I did not go except in the morning to school and Class. We had a very good school but not a very large turn out but a very pleasant school. I did not go away from home. Family all well. Monday, March 17 Weather rather changeable today as it is St. Patrick’s day. We ran the country Bur all day on Rye now. Business tolerable good. We took the old cloth on the Midlings Bolt to replace it with finer cloth to get ready for the new Purifier which we expect here last of the week. Our new hand comes today Bassel Buxton at 5 dollars per Month. I hope he will prove to be a good hand. Sallie make the new cloth. Family well. Tuesday, March 18 Weather rather cool all day and I saw snow on the cars going past. Business tolerable good today. We sent flour and feed down to Robert Day’s gang at Hood’s Mill. We ran on Rye all day. We are pretty well up with our grinding. We put the new cloth on the Midlings chest today. It kept us pretty busy all day that and fixing the [--] under it. Pay day on the R Road today. Wednesday, March 19 Weather rather pleasant today. Business not very brisk today but I was very busy finishing my spouts so we can get to grinding wheat. Have been running on corn all day. We are on wheat now. I have been changing the Reals on the cloth so the white Mid will come down on the East side of the bolting chest. Geo. A. McComas came up to see us today. He is looking well. He is about to buy himself a small mill near the W.M.R.R. All well. Thursday, March 20 Weather rather cool all day and thretening. Business not very brisk today. Have been running on wheat today as we have nothing else to do. We have rather a large stock of flour on hand now for this little Mill. Wm. B.D. went to Fred’k this afternoon. I wanted to get some things and I took him along for company. We got through and back by dusk. I found Mr. Kisor wateing [for] me. All well. Friday, March 21 Weather cool but rather pleasant for the season at this time. Business very dull today. We have been running on Midlings all day. Mr. Keyser stoped over night with us. I paid him for his wheat shaft bold &c and barganed with him to Balance the Burs and put in a cleaner over the wheat Bur all for 66 dollars. He furnish all he takes his Purifier away.(sic) I expect the new one now soon. Wheat market off. Family all well. Saturday, March 22 Weather wet most of the day. Business rather dull today no orders from below some little trade at home. I commenced to put up the new dust Room for another Pruifier. I am sorry to order any I am almost of the opinion they will not pay but will have to take it now on trail and if it does good work we will have to keep it. Our man is talking about leaving, too much work for the wages. Family all well. Sunday, March 23 Weather cool but rather pleasant. Sunday School and Church in the morning. Bro. Kolb is returned. He preached a very good serman. New Officers were Elected for the Sunday School I.T. McComas Sup. Bro. John Shipley assistant sup. Bro. L.W. Poole Treas. And Clarence Maught Sec. I am very well satidfied with the office and with the others and hope I will with the help of the good Lord do my duty and the school may prosper. All well. Monday, March 24 Weather rather thretening. The nights keep cool that is good to keep the friut back. Mr. N.J. Worthington has been delivering the 500 Bus wheat engaged some time ago bought at 1.00 per Bus since then wheat has been 12cts per Bus better but is off again. Only worth now in Balto. 1.10 per Bus was as high there about 2 weeks ago 1.18 about. We have been grinding Mid most of the day choping now. Business very dull today. Family well. Tuesday, March 25 Weather cool and a little windy but good healthy weather. We have been running on corn all day. Mr. N.J. Worthington has been halling the balance of his wheat will be 6 or 700 Bus in all. This last halling it is very good wheat 500 Bus. I get [it] at 1.00 per Bus the balance is to be priced between now and the 10th of May next. Business has been very good today 26 Bbls to Jas. Kennedy & Co. at 5 dollars per Bbl they pay freight. Charlie went to town this afternoon. Wednesday, March 26 Weather has been thretening and commenced to rain some in the evening. We have been grinding schreenings most all day. We are not very busy grinding now having a plenty a head of everything needed. Business rather dull today no orders except at home. I have been busy between times fixing up a dust Room for the new Purifier which I expect here tomorrow as I had to send the freight money to Fred’k today 9.55. Family all well. Thursday, March 27 Weather little cloudy but warm. We were very busy all day. We had two orders to fill 38 Bbls family for J.S. Gary & Son & 500” Meal and 250” feed for G.T. Jones. We had a good deal of other work to do about the Mill. I also hung up our Meat or Paged it. We had such bad luck with our meat last year. We are takeing more care with it this year. We have a very nice lot of Meat this season. I smoked it with Hickory wood. Family all well. Friday, March 28 Weather rather pleasant little thretening rain. We were very busy all day. We got ready the balance of 15 Bbls low grade flour to go to Balto and shipped the balance of J.S. Gary & Son flour and some feed to two other partes down the Road. Ran on wheat most of the day. One Silver Creek Purifier came today and Charlie and I have been busy takeing it to peaces to get it up stares. We got down and up again or nearly so. We are very much pleased with the appearance of it. All well. Saturday, March 29 Weather thretening in the morning and rained in the evening. I have been busy all day on the new Purifier. I am doing the setting myself. I had a good deal of trouble to make room for it by takeing down some of the partition walls. Have to [--] very close to the Merchant Bolt. It will be a very good place for it. Business tolerable good. Two small orders to fill feed and flour. Grinding corn all day. Family all well. Sunday, March 30 Weather rather windy and cool. I filled my place as Superintendent of Ijamsville Sunday School today for the first time. We did not have a very large turn out. I am in hopes the school will increase both in numbers and goodness. My prayer is that the good Lord will help us. After school Class met not very many out. I spent the remainder of the day home reading and resting myself. All well. Monday, March 31 Weather very windy all day. March is going out rather rough it came in rather pleasant. We are rather busy today had 4 or 5 orders for feed and flour. Ran on corn all day. Worked at the Purifier and I have it nearly ready to start but would like the agt Mr. Walker to be here before I do much more on it but if he does not come soon I will finish in my way and start it. Charlie went to Fred’k to get some little things and sweet Potatos they were very high 1.00 per Bus. Family all well. Tuesday, April 1 Weather very windy again today. I worked very hard today even up to nearly midnight on the Purifier to get it ready so we can start it in the morning. Charlie & I don all the work in putting it up for work and I think we have sat it right. The Agt will be along in a day or so and I want to have it working before he comes & see if it is sat right. We had some trade from below today and on the whole we have been very busy. Wednesday, April 2 Weather more pleasant today but still the wind blows but not so strong. We started on wheat and started the new Purifier. It works very nicely and I think will give satisfaction. It is very nicely gotten up put together with the best material and does not appear to take much power to drive it. Our trade was tolerable good today. We took in over 200 Bus wheat some 60 odd Bus was left for flour. Family all well. Thursday, April 3 Weather very windy all day very changeable rained a little in the morning but soon cleared off. We have been running on wheat all day. The water is rather too low I think it is on account of the high and dry wind causes it. Trade tolerable good one or two orders for feed. The flour market is rather dull the last day or so. I do not know what to think of one of our best customers. He has not ordered for a month or more and owes about 300$. Family all well. Friday, April 4 Weather cool and windy and has been freezeing in the shade all day. I saw ice about the water wheal this evening. It is [not] good weather. Trade has been very good again today. J.S. Gary & Son got 10 Bbls family and one or two other small orders and an order to fill Monday for Weller 50 Bus S.S. & 1 ton corn chop. I have grate reason to be thankfull for so many blessings and I hope I do feal thankfull. We ran on wheat last night till about 1 O’clock. All well. Saturday, April 5 Weather more pleasant but cool not so windy as yesterday and some time past. Business has not been so brisk today no orders from below some home trade but mostly credit. We have been grinding corn chop all day for Wm. T. Weller. He wants a ton expect to ship it Monday. I was on wheat till about 2 O’clock last night. We wrote to Ella she is comeing home Easter on a visit as it is a little holiday. All well. Sunday, April 6 Weather rather pleasant only a little cool a good healthy day. I was at Sabbath School in the monring prayer meeting at Bro. Bear’s in the afternoon and preaching at night. We had a very good Sunday School more out then last Sunday. I hope it will increase in number as also in piety. Our prayer emeeting at Bro Bear’s was very good also the services at night at Church was very good and quite a good turn out. We were all there except Charlie he is home with a sore toe. Monday, April 7 Weather rather thretening but rather pleasant. We have been running on wheat all day getting a stock ahead again. We sent off 1 ton corn chop and 50 Bus Shipstuff to Weller today. Aside from that business was rather slack some little exchangeing in the Mill. I just rec’d a letter of Rev. J.H. Turner Ella’s teacher at Burkittsville. He thinks Ella is getting along very well, also sent Bill. Family all well. Tuesday, April 8 Weather pleasant more like Spring then any day we have had for some time. Business very dull today. We have been grinding wheat all day or since we started. We have to wait now untill about 9 O’clock for the water to get up. Mr. Walker came today to see if the Purifier is working all right. He did not make any important changes. We had set it all right. Mr. Kisor also came to do some work for me. Family well. Wednesday, April 9 Weather quite pleasant very Spring like. Tomie Crawford commenced to take [the] Roof off the Store. He is building a dwelling and will run the new [--] over the back end of the store. I have been very busy all day. Our man Mr. Kisor came to help put Burs in Balance turn tops &c. Mr. Walker agt of Purifier Co. also came to see if mashine is set up all right & found it all right except some little minor changes. All well. Thursday, April 10 Weather very wet most all day very bad for Crawford as he has his Roof off store. We were very busy all day with Burs worked very late tonight to get through. I think the improvement will be a good one and the Burs needed it very much they were very much out of balance especially the Mid and Chopper they were very bad. Trade today to be shipped tomorrow. Ella came home today glad to see her. Friday, April 11 Weather clearing off today wind from N.W. cloudy but no rain. We have been running on Midlings all day. I am very much pleased with boath Bur and Purifier I think the yield will be larger. Business rather slack today except home trade was very good. I helped Mr. Crawford to build his Chimney for a little while the first brick I have laid for a good while. All well. Saturday, April 12 Weather quite pleasant. Crawford has his new house Roofed ready for rain. I helped to top out his Chimney. We were quite busy all day grinding on country and we had several orders to fill could not get them all filled before Way trane came. Will have to send it off Monday. Ella is with us for a week. She is not so well but she is looking very well. She is troubled with one of her teeth. The rest of the family are all well. Sunday, April 13 Weather pleasant but a little cool and thretening. We had Sunday School and Class in the morning and preaching at night by the Rev. Mr. March Baptist Minister. He preached a very good sermon. Every body appeared pleased with him and noted that it would be agreeable that he should preach every 2nd Sunday evening in the Month that is the day he preaches at Lingnor(?) Ch. All well. Monday, April 14 Weather pleasant but thretening sprinkling a little now. We ran on corn from Midnight till after Breakfast then we started on wheat with the new cleaner of Kisor’s but had to stop and take it off on account of the [--] was not put in time. I am sorry I had anything to do with him. I do not think he takes propper care in what he does. Ma, Ella, Maggie & Maud went to town today. Tuesday, April 15 Weather warm and pleasant with a gust of rain in the later part of the afternoon. We got Mr. Riggs to fix the end of the waterwheal shaft today. Charlie went after him to Mr. Prices. He appears to understand his business very well. We were not very long after we got to work on it. Business tolerable good today. A few small orders of feed and Meal. 500” Meal for J.S. Gary & Son will have to grind it tonight and ship it tomorrow. Ella and Maggie came home from Frederick today. Wednesday, April 16 Weather cloudy and rained a little in the evening. We ran all night on wheat and all day on corn or rather untill about two this morning. Trade tolerable good today with the Rail Road Hands Pay Day on the Road. What time I was not busy at the Mill I worked at the new fence between yard and Hen House. I am making some new or changes with the Fences. I want to keep the chickens out of the yard in front of the house. I am a little pushed where to put the front gate. Family all well. Thursday, April 17 Weather wet most all day. Charlie finished planting Peach trees about noon I bought some 10 or 12 very choice. I hope we may see some benefit of them. I have felt rather sad today I am a fraid I will loose W.T. Weller apc which is about 356.00. I had a check of his returned today protested. Ella went back to school. We took up the country Bur and dressed it [--] the furrows &c. T.W.C. helped me. I am most run down with hard work. All well. Friday, April 18 Weather raining most all the morning but cleared off. We have had a good rain. It rained all the forepart of last night and the water got so high Charlie & I about one O;clock had to put down the gate to keep back the flood. We are still running night and day. We had been running two Burs all day one on chop and one on wheat. Mr. Waters came up from Hood’s Mill to see us today and brought us some money and ordered 1 ton feed. Business rather good today. Family all well. Saturday, April 19 Weather pleasant but cloudy. We ran the country Bur all day. Took wheat Bur up & washed and [--] it. We have been busy all day. Charles was here brought 5 cherry trees. Planted 2 by the Hen House and 3 in the North west corner of the Garden. I hope they will all live and do somebody good. We also worked on the front fence took up the large gate posts and replanted them. Maggie is not so well for the last few days. The rest of the family are well. Sunday, April 20 Weather quite pleasant but not warm enough to do without fire. We had a very pleasant Sunday School this morning and the largest we have had for some time. I am in hopes it will increase boath in numbers and in interest. After Sunday School Bro. Kolb preached. He also preached in the evening. He & wife & child is stoping with us, In the afternoon I attended a prayer neeting at Bro. Bear’s had a very good meeting. Family all well. Monday, April 21 Weather pleasant but the nights keep cold frost and some ice most every night. We are grinding Mid today. Business rather slack today filled one small order for R. Sellman for feed & meal. Aside from that very little doing. I engaged a load of white corn of Dr. Hughes at 40cts per Bus. We are in want of white corn now. Our trade in that line is mostly for white meal. The wheat and flour market is dull again flour off in Balto 25cts. Family all well. Tuesday, April 22 Weather quite Spring like. Every body appears to be fixing up and getting there gardens planted. We have been busy all day fixing up garden front yard fence and planting out shruberry &c. Running on poor Midlings today. Business very good today. Two orders one of J.S. Gary & Son for 10 Bbls family and small order of Mr. Fout but not very much business at home. Farmers all appear to be busy. I have been at work on front fence what spare time I had. Wednesday, April 23 Weather quite pleasant but it looks a little like rain this evening. We finished grinding midlings then turned on wheat. Business not very brisk today except in a small way mostly feed. We have sold pretty nearly all our light feed as the demand has been pretty good for some time past. We will have to run night and day again on wheat untill we get ahead again.. I worked at my fence for a while. All well. Thursday, April 24 Weather pleasant but a little cool frost again last night but light it feals like frost again tonight. We ran most all last night. Stoped about 4 the water got down. Have been running all day on wheat and we put it in 1/8 sacks as we ground it to have it ready when ordered. Charlie rode to town this afternoon. Business not very brisk today. About this time business is generally slack. The growing wheat looks very good. The wheat market a little off. All well. Friday, April 25 Weather quite pleasant Spring like. Charles is at work in the garden all day planting and fixing up. We ran all last night on wheat had to stop for a while this morning for a while on account of water. Ran all day on wheat. Filled two small orders of meal & one Bbl family. Will have to grind meal tonight to fill a small order to go away tomorrow. Mr. Walker was to see us today. He is agent of the Purifier we are running. Charlie took him down to see Mr. Price. Family all well. Saturday, April 26 Weather warm about the warmest day we have had this season. Grinding meal since bed time last night. Sent away 500” today trade tolerable good. I worked on the front fence part of today I have it about all finished except the Gates. I want to get them made and up as soon as I have time. The 2 choise Grape roots came today by mail. We planted one in front of [the] back Porch & the other side of the walk as you go to the front Gate. Family all well. Sunday, April 27 Weather quite pleasant all day. Every thing is putting in Spring appearance. We had a very pleasant little Sunday School but not as many Boys out as ought to be. Very few out today. Good weather they stay away to play and bad weather they give that as an excuse for not comeing. I am in hopes we willl be able to get an Organ to attract them. I spent the remainder of the day home reading. Mr. Shipley called this evening. Monday, April 28 Weather very thretening and some rain which is very much needed it is making look very Spring like. Fruit trees is getting quite with blooms. Say there will be aplenty of fruit this season from present appearances. We had a good order of Mr. Jas.S. Gary & Son for 40 Bbls family and 1000” Meal. We sent off about half of it will send the balance tomorrow. We have been running on wheat all day will run tonight till midnight then run on corn. Family all well. Tuesday, April 29 Weather very pleasant after the rain of yesterday. Every thing is looking very Spring like and every body appears to be fixing up things. Spring more interest taken apparently then for a long time. We have been making some improvements about the front fences, yard, &c. We sent off the balance of the order 30 Bbls flour today. We have been running on corn, Rye &c all day. Some of my spare time I spent in fixing about the yard. Family all well. Wednesday, April 30 Weather very pleasant. Every thing is getting very Spring like. The trees are getting quite green wheat is looking very well and the prospect is very good for a good crop this season. We have aplenty of wheat on hand yet enough. I think to last till after Harvest without our trade [--] to what it has been. Business is very dull today very little doing. I have almost got the blues. Grinding Rye for chop most all day grinding corn now for Meal. I worked some on the front fence. Family all well. Thursday, May 1 Weather cool but pleasant feals a little like frost but I hope not as the fruit trees are in full bloom and the present prospects is very favourable for a very large crop of all kinds fruit. Business has been very quiet today. We have been runing on wheat since the water got up this morning. We are not running of nights now except late bed time. I worked part of my spare time on one of the double Gates today. All well. Friday, May 2 Weather cool and windy from N.W. frost last night but I hope it did not inger the fruit very much. Business very quiet today some little trade and exchangeing. We are running on midilings (white) all day. Spare time I worked on one of the double gates leeding to the stable got one up. Mr Keyser came this eve and took down his Purifier. I am glad to get it out of the way. I have not an excited opinion of Purifiers any how. They wast too much flour dust. Family all well. Saturday, May 3 Weather cool and dry. We had quite a heavy frost last night but I do not think it ingered all the fruit as the weather was so dry. We may have more tonight but I hope not. Business tolerable good today an order and check of 50$ of W.T. Weller. Trade has been tolerable good at home also. We ran on mid all day some work came in will do it Monday. I worked on the gate at my leasure got it about finished now. The flour and wheat market is stronger today. Sunday, May 4 Weather quite pleasant. Sunday School in the morning and prayer meeting in the evening was to have been preaching but the Preacher is sick so stated. We had quite a good Sunday School but not as many out as I would like to see. I am in hopes the school will get larger. We want an Organ. I think that with good singing will cause a great many more to come. I was at prayer meeting also Ma, Maggie, Willie & Maud. All well. Monday, May 5 Weather quite pleasant no frost last night. We have been quite busy all day. Two good orders from below 10 to one & 6 to another. Trade was not so brisk at home. We have been running two Burs part of today one corn & one mid & wheat. Charlie went to town on business. I want to see what we can get corn (white) delivered for very scarce about here. Also tooks some checks up to Bank. Family all well thanks to the good Lord. Tuesday, May 6 Weather cool and windy. I am a fraid we will have more frost if the wind falls. Business not too brisk alltho we have no reason to complain. Some home trade and we filled the 1000” Meal to J.S.Gary & Son. Willie and I went to town in the Buggy. I wanted to attend to some little business & get some little things also to see about getting some corn (white) but there is but very little corn coming in now the farmers is so busy now ploughing. Family well. Wednesday, May 7 Weather cool but pleasant. We had some frost again last night but I hope it did not do very much damage to the fruit. We ran till about 2 O’clock then had to stop on account of water giving out. Chopping and grinding wheat all day. I worked a little on the front Gate got it about finished I believe. We priced the balance of N.J.W. wheat @ 1.06 per Bus. He only has about 147 Bus now not settled for. The wheat and flour market is higher. Family all well. Thursday, May 8 Weather quite pleasant. We ran till about midnight last night. The [water] gives out about that time so we have to stop. Charlie & I fixed the Dam some this morning. It got holes in it. Ran on wheat all day. Ma & Charlie went to town in the Buggy Ma wanted to get some things for Ella. They got home in pretty good season. Business not very brisk today no orders. The wheat and flour market is very strong today flour is 25cts higher. Family all well thanks. Friday, May 9 Weather quite pleasant today except a little windy more frost last night. We ran untill about midnight then the water gave out but we did not have to wait long for it to come up again. Have been running on wheat all day. Business tolerable good. Orders for ton chop & 500” Meal but we are out of white corn and no prospects of getting at present. The wheat and flour market is very strong. We put flour up 25cts per Bus today. Family all well. Saturday, May 10 Weather cool but pleasant more frost last night but as it is so dry they say it will not inger the fruit very much. We ran all night in wheat and corn. Corn chop to go away today one ton for Wm. T. Weller. We got it ready just in time as we got the last bag out the Way trane came along. Business not very brisk today but we were very busy. We had the wheat Bur to take up wash & dress. We also took the cockhead out and ground the top as it needed it. Some exchangeing and little trade at home. Family all well. Sunday, May 11 Weather quite warm all day but [--]. We had frost last night and may have it again tonight.We had one of the best Sunday Schools we have had for a long while. Mr. John Mussetter died this morning. About 2 O’clock this afternoon Mr. Shipley and I walked up to see him and was invited Mr. Shipley and I to set up tonight. We agreed to do so but as Bro March preaches for us tonight we will go to here him and from there we will go and sit up. Family all well. Monday, May 12 Weather very pleasant not quite so warm as yesterday. Mr. Shipley & I sat up all last night with Mr. John Mussetter. Bro. March preached for us last night and gave us a very good sermon quite a large Congregation. Business has been very good today 27 Bbls for Ilchester tomorrow besides some trade at home. The wheat and flour market keeps strong with an advance of 25cts per Bbl. We are running on wheat and will run all night if the water keeps up. All well. Tuesday, May 13 Weather quite pleasant not too cold as it has been. Business tolerable brisk today as we had to send off the 28 Bbls flour that was ordered yesterday most went to Ilchester. We are running most all the time now except when the water is too low. Running on wheat now. We commenced to dig the Cistern today. John Anderson is doing it for us. I am a fraid that we will be troubled with slate. If so we will have to wall it and that I don’t like. Family all well. We had the Organ fixed today. Wednesday, May 14 Weather pleasant. It still continues dry but every thing is looking very well. We are still running full time for as long as the water lasts. It jineraly gives out about 3 O’clock in the morning. Business not very brisk today except some little orders and exchangeing. I went to Fred’k this afternoon after some sand for the Cistern and while there I engaged the spouting at 10cts per foot of Mr. Fox and saw after some other little business. Coal Bbls &c. Family all well. Thursday, May 15 Weather warm and dry. It had the appearance of rain this morning but cleared off again. We are grinding midlings today (white). Business rather dull today but it is jineraly about this time of the Month. John Anderson got down with the Cistern but I find I will have to wall part of it if not all as the lower part of it is loose slate and can not keep a face on it. On that account it will give me more work and make it cost more. Mrs Crawford came home today with a little Boy. All well. Friday, May 16 Weather warm and rather thretening with a nice shower on the evening which is very much needed. We finished grinding midlings and now on corn. I started the brisk work of the Cistern this afternoon. I will have to Brick it part of the way from the bottom if not all the way up. I am a fraid I will have trouble with it as the Bank is so bad. Business tolerable good some few orders one for 1000” Meal but I cannot get the corn. Wheat and flour market is still up. Family all well. Saturday, May 17 Weather cloudy and wet part of the forenoon. We have had a very good rane. It came very jintly and had time to sink in the ground. Everything growing is looking better on account of the rane. Charlie & I was very busy about the Mill alltho business is not very brisk except the home trade is tolerable good. Today is our Twentieth (20) wedding anniversary. I hope it is for our best interest and the good Lord is willing that we may see twenty years more. All well. Sunday, May 18 Weather pleasant but showery in the afternoon. There was to have been preaching but owing to the rane no one came. I went up but had to go back home. We had a very pleasant Sunday School in the morning but owing to the meeting in Urbana the meeting was not so large as it is at some times especially on the men’s side of the House. I spent the balance of the day at home. Family all well. Monday, May 19 Weather rather cloudy and wet most of the day. It rained very hard about Woodstock had almost a flood there. I went down there to see Mr. Wm. T. Weller at Granite to try and get some money he owes about 369 dollars. I got his check for 100$ and his note for 60 days for 250 dollars. That is the best I could do. I hope I will not have any trouble but I am fearfull. Running on wheat all day. Family all well. Tuesday, May 20 Weather quite pleasant after the rain. Business tolerable good today being pay day on the R. Road. Most of the men came up very well today. Running on wheat all day today and all last night and expect to tonight. I worked all the afternoon in the Cistern bricking it up. I found it necessary to do so on account the slate could not get a smooth bank to cement against. The Tiners put the spouting up. Wheat market rather off today. Family well. Wednesday, May 21 Weather quite warm good growing weather for everything. We did not run all last night. I ran till about 12 the water got low and I stoped. Charley started again about 4 this morning running on wheat. Will have to change off on corn and run tonight to get some of that ahead. I worked on the Cistern in the morning but had to stop and go to Fred’k after more sand and spout to leed into the Cistern. Trade tolerable good. Another order for meal but have no corn. All well. Thursday, May 22 Weather rather cool today North wind. John Anderson planted about 200 Sweetpotatos for us. Getting out some Sills now for the back Porch. We are running on corn all day. Commenced last night but had to stop after midnight on account of low water. Business tolerable good today. Some two orders Meal & flour. I am fealing quite unwell today with my back. I can scarcely get about working in the Cistern cause my back is not very strong. Friday, May 23 Weather pleasant but cool to work out but I found it cool in the house. There was frost last night but I did not see any as I did not get up till after Sun up. I was up last night till 2 O’clock in the Mill. Business very good an order of J.S. Gary & Son 10 Bbls family. Running on wheat. I worked all day in the cistern got it all finished below the ground. I suffered very much with my back I can scarcely walk. Saturday, May 24 Weather cool but pleasant. We had quite a frost again last night but I do not think a grate deal of harm was don. I hope not. We have been busy all day. Trade tolerable good. We worked over the potatos and howed them and there growing part of the garden. Mr. John Anderson don the most of it. We also put a support under the setting Room joist. We also have a man whitewashing. I feal something better today. Sunday, May 25 Weather pleasant except a little gusty in the evening but not much rain about here. We had rather a small Sunday School today on account of the weather looked like rain in the morning. They are not very good Baptists about here rather fraid of water but alltho the school was small we had a very pleasant school. Also after school Class but not many out but a very good meeting. I remained at home the balance of the day I am not well. Monday, May 26 Weather rather thretening but no rain. We have been running on wheat all day very good head water all day. Business very good. I have engaged 1000 or 1200 Bus white corn but the price is not set yet on all of it. It is worth here about 40cts per Bus but I expect I will have to give about 45 to get it. Sallie & Maud went to town today to get some things for Ella. She is getting ready for the Commencement. My back is a little better today but not well. Tuesday, May 27 Weather cool but rather thretening but I do not think it will rain it is too cool. I finished the brick work of the Cistern. I can build the Porch now when I get the stuff and have time to do it. Business not very brisk today we sent off what was ordered yesterday. We ground corn a while this morning then went on white midlings. My back is still quite lame but I manage to work. I have a Plaster on it but I do not think it does much good. Family all well. Wednesday, May 28 Weather cool and a little cloudy it is considered most too cool for corn. Business not very brisk today. We have been running on midlings all day & cleaning wheat. We had a car load of Bbls come Fred’k cost includeing freight about 32 ¼ cts a piece. They are a better Bbl then we get from here for 30cts a piece. We met at the Church last eve and formed the Committee for the Strawberry festival to be held next week. Thursday, May 29 Weather not quite so cool today. We took in three loads corn today 150 Bus paid 45 & 43 cts per Bus for it. It is all very nice dry corn. We are grinding now to ship 1500” to J.S. Gary & Son. We also filled an order for the later of 45 Bbls flour. We are now almost out of flour but have aplenty of wheat yet on hand. In fact aplenty of most every kind of grain all we want now is time to grind it. Wheat and flour market is steady. Family all well except my back. Friday, May 30 Weather warm but pleasant looks a little like rain now. We have been quite busy for the last few days. We have more orders then we can fill for Meal and chop and are also out of flour or nearly so alltho we have had enough so far to fill all orders. Trade has been very good for the last few days. I am in hopes we will now have time to catch up. Sallie & Maud went to town got home safe. All well. Saturday, May 31 Weather warm but gusty the weather we need not for the growing crops. Rain is needed we think. Business not so brisk today it is well as we are out of meal and got but very little flour on hand. We are running on wheat today and also cleaning wheat. We are making very good progress with the strawberry festival which is to be next Wednesday and Thursday evenings. I hope we will meet with success. I think we can get the school house to [--] in. Sunday, June 1 Weather very warm and dry we want rain now very bad. Sabbath School tolerable well attended this morning. We had a good deal to say about the strawberry [festival] which is to come off Wednesday and Thursday evenings next. The time is short I find to get things to work. I am afraid to make it a success but I hope we will do well (sic). Preaching after school by Rev. R. Kolb and sacrament. Prayer meeting in the evening but I did not go. Monday, June 2 Weather warm and dry but in the later part of the afternoon we had a shower. Today is a holliday but I worked all day. Charlie went to a Picknick over on the Pike. We had some more orders but not [--] to fill them at present. The water is so low that we can only half grind. We are doing the best we can. We can run from about 8 in the morning till about 2 at night. We are running now on meal to fill an order for J.S.G. & Son. All well. Tuesday, June 3 Weather wet all day with frequent showers in very good time as it was very much needed. The good Lord sent it just in time. Charlie and Clarence Maught went to Frederick to order the things for the festival but did not get much wet.I have been running on corn all day. We are very busy with our grinding as owing to low water we got behind. We cant fill all out orders now as they come in. Family all well. Wednesday, June 4 Weather cleared off last night and today is very pleasant and has the appearance of a pleasant night for our festival that commences this evening for the benefit of the Sabbath School. We want to get an Organ. I hope we will have success. So far everything is moveing along finely. I have been so busy about the Mill all day that I did not have time to help much to do the work but I believe that every thing is ready for the evening. Thursday, June 5 Weather quite pleasant all day. We have been busy all day filling our orders and grinding but the water is low but we are doing all we can.The Festival was very well attended for the first night and don very well. Every thing proved off very pleasant. Every body appeared to enjoy themselves very well. I am in hopes tonight will be better as a better show can be made. The two large Cakes & some others came from Frederick today. Family all well. Friday, June 6 Weather pleasant till middle of afternnon when a terible Hale storm pased over us broke 35 panes glass out of the N.W, side of the Mill 10X14 glass. It is clear now and I hope it will be a nice evening for the Festival. We have concluded to hold it tonight and tomorrow afternoon and night. We have not half sold out may have to keep it up till Monday or Tuesday night next. The thretening rain I think kept some away last night alltho we don tolerable well. Saturday, June 7 Weather pleasant till late in mid or late afternoon a terible Hail storm came up but I do not presume that it extended very far from us but it hailed very hard for a few minutes and did considerable damage boath in crops and in property in the way of brakeing glass &c broke 35 panes out in the N.W. side of the Mill. We had very slim attendance at the festival in consequence only took in about 3$. We are to have it again tonight. Sallie & I went to Frederick to take up the 2000$ Note and give another of 1500$ to N.J. Worthington. Sunday, June 8 Weather pleasant. Our little Sunday School was very well attended this morning but owing to the labors of the Festival and lost of so much rest all appears pretty wered out but all the teachers were at there posts of duty. After we got through Rev. Jas. Crawford addressed the school according to appointment. Evening Father March preached for us a large congregation in attendance. Family all well. Monday, June 9 Weahter very pleasant. We are running on wheat. We are very busy now grinding and are doing all we can while the water holds up. We are grinding untill about 1 or 2 O’clock then have to shut down till about 8 next morning. We got through with our festival Saturday night about 11 ½ O’clock. Octioned off all we could and got rid other wise and don very well. We will make clear about 30 or 35 dollars clear but we all had to work very hard and earned our Money. Family all well. Tuesday, June 10 Weather warm and gusty in the evening. We have been running on midlings all day and cleaning wheat. We rec’d a check of 75$ of Weller and an order of more flour feed &c also an order of W.S. Robb meal lard & feed. We filled his order but did not fill Weller’s. Got most of it to grind yet.The flour and wheat market is very strong for the last few days. Flour 6$ per Bbl in Mill now wheat 1.15 here or there about. Family all well. Wednesday, June 11 Weather warm with a nice shower in the evening also one in the morning. Charlie & I are very busy. We have got back with our grinding owing to low water. We run night and day now or as long as the water holds out. I am in hopes if the water keeps up to catch up again with the work. We are unable to fill all the orders. The wheat and flour market keeps up. Family all well Thanks. Thursday, June 12 Weather warm with a shower in the afternoon. We have had very good seasonable weather for the last few days. Some say that wheat would be better now without any more rain. They are getting ready for Harvest allready. How quick Harvest comes around. We have been busy grinding. Do all we can while the water lasts. Ran all last night. We chopped most all day today to fill an order. Running now on wheat want to get some flour ahead. Family well. Friday, June 13 Weather warm but not oppresive. We are still busy grinding running night and day while the water hold up. It usualy gives out about 2 or 3 in the morning. We are running on wheat since last evening. We filled T.W. Weller’s order of flour and chop Rye. The load coal came today 6 tons of Egg Red Ash and 5 tons of Nut White Ash 5 and 4.75 per ton. Family all well. Saturday, June 14 Weather pleasant and very good weather on wheat. In fact everything growing. I am in hopes the corn and wheat crop will be good and large this year again. It has that appearance at present except where the hale has cut in. We have been running on country work all day but the water is low. Sallie & I signed the Lease to the Lot where Thos. L. Crawford’s store & House. It runs 20 years from 1st of April last at 16 dollars per anom. Family all well. Sunday, June 15 Weather very warm all day. We had a very pleasant Sunday School today about as large a school as we have had for some time. Bro. Shipley started a new Class. I wanted him to do so for some time but could not get him started. I am in hopes we will be able to build the school up. It is not as large as it ought to be. There is a good many children about here that do not go to Sunday School. I want to see them all in Sunday School. All well. Monday, June 16 Weather not so warm today more breeze and overcast and a little gusty in the afternoon but no rain here. I have been fenceing some little today rinning a fence from the lower Gate Post to the upper corner of the Hen House. Also commenced to take down and rebuild the stone wall just at the upper corner of the Bridge below the Mill part of it caved in. Business not very brisk an order to fill for Weller of 1 ton chop Rye. Grinding wheat now. All well. Tuesday, June 17 Weather cool and pleasant the best kind [of] weather on wheat. Farmers is getting ready to cut wheat. Some are talking about commenceing about the middle of this week. We have been quite busy today. We have plenty to do now our trade is pretty good for which I hope I am very thankfull to the good Lord. I fixed a stand fuller &c to the Mid Bur so we wont have to change so often. We expect Ella home Thursday. We will be glad to see her home. Wednesday, June 18 Weather quite cool almost cool enough last night for frost. We are very busy having more orders then we can fill. On account of low water we cant make much head way but are doing all we can. Ran two Burs most all day one on wheat and one on midlings. A good many farmers are laying in there flour for Harvest that is one reason we are short. I am in hopes to catch up soon. We are all in hopes to see Ella home tomorrow. Family all well. Thursday, June 19 Weather cool and pleasant splendid weather on wheat. Ella came home from school today. I am very glad she has got through with her schooling alltho I would liked to have seen her graduate. I do not feal able to send her another season if it was thought advisable as it is time she was through with her schooling. Business not so brisk today. We had an order for feed S.S. of that we are out at present. Running on wheat and mid all day. Friday, June 20 Weather cool and pleasant good weather for harvesting. Most farmers about here have commenced to cut some two or three days ago. We are running night and day Charlie & I. We do all we can while we have water. It gives out about 3 in the morning. We run two Burs through the day while the water is the strongest. Business not very brisk but all we need at present while the water is low. . Ella got home testerday she is very well. I am glad she has got home. Saturday, June 21 Weather quite pleasant. Good Harvest weather and they are all as far as I can see very busy about here cuting there wheat and it is in very good order just about wripe enough to cut. It is not good to let it get too ripe. Business has not been quite so brisk today but we have been busy grinding and cleaning wheat. Charlie has all we can do most of the time do not have very much time to set down. Young Mr. Steiff called to see us wants to sell us a piano and Organ Sunday, June 22 Weather pleasant. We had a very good school this morning. We desided to take the Organ that is priced at 70 dollars, 50 cash and the bal. In 4 months. I think that is about the best we can do. After school Class met Bro. Jas. Crawford led not very many out but there was a fealing and I thought a very good meeting. No prayer meeting at night. Sallie, Maud, Miss Temple & I walked over to see Mrs. Ijams. Monday, June 23 Weather very pleasant. The best of weather for farmers to cut there wheat and Hay. The wheat crop about here is not supposed to be as large as it was last year but from present appearances the price will be about as last year. Business is not very brisk but suits us very well as we want to get some stocks ground up being little on hand at present. Running on wheat now. Tuesday, June 24 Weather quite warm today about the warmest we have had I think. We are running on wheat with two Burs since last eve while the water would hold up. I am very anxious for Messers J.S.G. & Son order up by the time they order which is jineraly about the last of the month. We got an order last eve of A.A. Fahey of 5 Bbls in Bags we sent it today. Wheat and flour is off some in Balto about 25cts per Bbl. Charlie & Wilie rode to Frederick this eve. Family all well. Thanks. Wednesday, June 25 Weather warm with a nice shower in the later part of the afternoon.We have been running two Burs all day one on wheat & one on Midlings. I am doing that to get a little stock on hand to be ready when orders come in. We are catching up a little on flour now. About one more day will have enough to fill J.S. Gary & Son Bill if they order this Month. I finished putting in the glass the hail broke for us today. Thursday, June 26 Weather warm. The Piano came up this morning. We had a very hard job to get it up and in the House. We did not have quite enough men to help us. Mr. Sellman hapend to be here and gave us a help. It weighs about 1150 lbs. We took it up on rolers. Business has been rather dull today but we do not have many orders this time in the month but we are getting ready to fill orders last of month. Family all well. Friday, June 27 Weather very warm little showery in the afternoon. We have been standing idle most all day on account of the water not running Monrovia dam. Cleaning out tale race. We may have water so we can run all night tonight. Business very dull today but as the water is so low it is just as well. The children except Willie are gon up to Prof. H. Thompson to a little entertainment. Family all well. Saturday, June 28 Weather very warm with a gust in the afternoon but we did not get much of it went around us. The water did not get up last night till about 8 O’clock then we ran till about 2 O’clock. No water today it may get up this evening we have don but very little today. Jas. S. Gary & Son sent there order today for 40 Bbls family to be shipped Monday. We have it all ready. I am in hopes the water will get better soon. The farmers about here finished cutting the wheat today. Sunday, June 29 Weather pleasant but rather too cool later in the evening must have been Hale some where near.We had a very pleasant Sunday School today a very good attendance. Bro. Kolb was with us at the close as it was his Preaching day. He scholed us a little about getting a Sunday School paper on another denomination. We took it because we thought it would suit us better then the one we had. No one [--] [--] Family all well. Monday, June 30 Weather pleasant we filled the order of J.S. Gary & Son. Aside from that business was light. Good head water today. Have been running two Burs today cleaning wheat &c. Charlie & Willie have gon to town to get Willie’s suit cloes & some paper bags &c. I ordered a lot of Bags 1/8 paper but they do not come up to what they agreed to give me. I do better by getting my Bags from Pittsburgh. Family well.
