Chas. B. Rogers has in his possession an old book of 347 pagges printed in Annapolis by Jonas S. Green in 1813, being a report of the testimony taken by a committee of the Legislature in reference to the mob and riots in Baltimore which took place previous to the War of 1812. These riots lasted three days and were caused by the publication of an article in the Federal Republican, a violent tory paper published at that time, attacking the Cabinet of President Madison. This article so incensed the citizens of Baltimore that the editors, Hon. Alex. Contee Hanson and Hon. Edward Johnson Wagner, who were opposed to the war, were compelled to seek safety in the jail. Several persons were killed during the riots, which were finally quelled by the military. The evidence in this old book is an epitome of those important and troublesome times. Gen. Tobias E. Stansbury, a Delegate from Baltimore county in the Legislature, sympathized with the article and was opposed to the war with Great Britain, and was charged with assisting to incite the riots.
