(Hagerstown [Md.]) December 13, 1866 COL. ST. LEGER GRENFELL. The Florida House of Representatives has adopted a report and resolutions upon the case of Col. Geo. St. Grenfell, a lieutenant in the British army, who volunteered for the Confederate cause, and subsequently was placed on the staff of Gen. Bragg and Lee. Owing to a misunderstanding with the Confederate War Department, he resigned, and subsequently, while hunting on the prairies of Illinois, was arrested and tried by a military commission, for conspiring to release Confederate prisoners at Camp Douglas, and to burn Chicago. He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to imprisonment for life at the Dry Tortugas in Florida, where he now is. The committee say that the charges are utterly groundless and the Colonel is a victim to perjury. They say that there are about five hundred prisoners now at Dry Tortugas.
