Verdict of Jury in the Case of Young Edward Bartlett. Coroner Nevitt held an inquest at the morgue today in the case of the boy, Edward Bartlett, who was run down by an engine on the crossing of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad near 1st and H streets Saturday afternoon and fatally injured. The boy lived at 2d and G streets northeast. He was riding his bicycle Saturday. The gates at the crossing were lowered, but the space between them was sufficient to allow the rider to pass through the opening and get upon the tracks. His right leg was cut off below the knee by the wheels of the moving engine and he was injured about the head. His death occurred at Providence Hospital yesterday morning. Policemen Burke and Osterman were witnesses at the inquest. The latter had a plat showing the distance between the gates, and both policemen told of what they learned of the accident soon after it occurred. The boy was on his way to a store to buy a pair of gloves, and was riding west when he was struck by the engine. Just before the accident happened a boy friend asked him to let him ride on the handlebars. Bartlett declined to grant the request because he was in a hurry. Two men who were riding in the engine jumped off when the accident occurred and spoke to the injured boy. The later remarked: "This will kill my mother." He was taken to the hospital, where his death occurred, as stated. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
