Dear St. Marys County researchers, I hope all of you won't mind if this begins to look something like a term paper with all the references, but I'm going to try to be as complete as I can. One thing I should mention at the beginning is that there appear to be at least three Wheatley families in Maryland. One centers in St. Mary's County around Leonardtown. Another is in Charles county near Mattawoman, and a third in and around the Baltimore area. We have to be careful not to get them mixed up as all seem to favor the same names for their children. Those in St. Marys and Charles Counties seem close enough to possibly be related, but I personally think the Baltimore bunch are another branch of the Wheatleys entirely. If any of you can furnish information to link them all I'll be glad to hear it. Sources will be identified by a number in parentheses. These will be listed at the end of the post and at the ends of subsequent posts on this subject. Original researchers will be identified where known. Now for the data: John Wheatley arrived in the Province in 1641. He made a deposition in 1654 that he was born about 1605 and immigrated "about 12 years since" as a free man. (1)He took the oath of fidelity l/2/1646/47.(2) >From Will of John Wheatley 23 Jan 1657 Pro 30 Sep 1659 (3) I doe give and appoint that all the remainder of my estate be equallie divided amongst my children every one having as much as another... [so] that they may be able to get their living and as they grow up in years I would have the girls to enjoy their estate when they are full sixteen years old and the boys wn they are full eighteene years old. >From a Rent Roll of 1707 (4) Acres: 50. Wheatley: Sur[veyed] 26 Jan 1648 for John Wheatley on the east side of Packers Creek [being) His Lordship's land purchased by him[Calvert] of Andrew the son of the sd Jno Wheatley. The following section is quoted from "Using Named Lands to extend Family Lines" by William S. Carley (NGSQ V81:3 Sep 1993). "Late in the century, two Wheatley males of corresponding given names-John and Andrew- left tracks in the meager records remaining for St. Mary's. Concurrently a pair of Wheatleys of the same names appear occasionally in court records of the contiguous county of Charles, where they were jointly sued. A deposition there by Andrew places his birth year as 1652 (3), but no similar document has been found for the John of Charles County. In St. Mary's, the lands of Andrew - and those of John whom he names as brother in his will - clustered in the same region in which the original John had settled. The chronological gap between John of 1641- 59, whose children should have been reaching adulthood by the 1660's, and the younger men who emerged in Charles county in the 1670's and in St. Marys in the 1680's, seems overlong - but not incompatible. Death periods for the younger men are likewise congruent with the projected births. Consequently, this paper dates the lineage of Samuel Wheatley [the ancestor Mr. Carley is attempting to link] from John I of 1641, with the caution that stronger evidence is desirable for the link between John I and John II. The plantations, meadows, and hills accumulated by John II and his brother Andrew - like those of John I and his son Andrew - were situated in southeastern St. Mary's County. The new lands lay a few miles inland from that of the 1640's. More precisely, they fell within a five mile radius, east to southeast, of present day Leonardtown and may be summarized as follows: John Wheatley II Wheatley's Chance, 272 acres patented 2 Oct 1680 [ref (5)] Wheatley's Content, 297 acres patgented 27 Nov 1681 [ref (6)] Wheatley's Meadows, 110 acres patented 27 Apr 1682 [ref (7)] Batchelor's Comfort, 190 acres patented 1682 [ref (8)] Wheatley's Contentment, 150 acres by certificate of survey to John Wheatley, received dated 28 Mar 1707 [ref (9)]; conveyed by his heirs to William Greenwell, whose son and sole male heir, James Greenwell, patent to the land in 1743. [ref (10)] Andrew Wheatley Nintoquight, 116 acres patented in 1683 [ref (11)] Wheatley's Hills, 28 acres patented in 1686 [ref (12)]" Andrew Wheatley wrote his will on 11/28/1693 and it was probated 2/2/1693/4. It left Wheatley's Hills to his one and only child, a minor daughter Mary, to be delivered to her at age 16 or on her marriage. He left bequests also to "cosons" [nephews and nieces] James, John, and Wenefrett, and his brother John. (13) >From Will of John Wheatley II dated 4/25/1717 (14) Item: I give unto my son James five hundred pounds of Tobacco to be paid him after my decease as soon as convenience will permitt. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son John one tract of land called Wheatley's Meadows containing one hundred and ten acres and one tract of land called Hiccory. Plains containing fifty acres... Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph one tract of land called Nintoquight containing one hundred and fourteen acres.... Item: I give unto my loving wife Elizabeth my now dwelling plantation [identified by rent rolls of 1707-17 as Wheatley's Content (15)] with the tract of land thereunto for and during her natural life and after her decease I do give and bequeath the said tract of land unto my two sons Thomas and Francis to be equally divided between them... Item: I give unto my loving wife one halfe of my movable goods and Chattels after payment of my debts, the other half to be equally divided amongst my five daughters, that is to say Winfrede, Ann, Elizabeth, Susannah, and Mary, to be paid them at the age of sixteen or day of marriage. Item: My will is that my two sons Thomas and Francis be of age to work for themselves at the age of eighteen years, in case my wife should marry again after my decease, but if she remains a widow then my will is that they remaine with her and under her tuition till the age of one and twenty. From the above we have the following summary of the first three Generations. John Wheatley (B. 1605) immigrant Sp: unknown Andrew Wheatley (B. circa 1652 D. bef 2/2/1693/4) Sp: unknown Mary Wheatley John Wheatley (B. bef 1659 D. bef 8/8/1717) Sp: Elizabeth _____ James Wheatley (B. circa 1688 D. 1720) (16) John Wheatley (B. circa 1690 D. bef 11/14/1770) (17) Winfrede Wheatley (B. circa 1692) (18) Joseph Wheatley (B. circa 1694 D. bef. 1/21/1739/40)(19) Thomas Wheatley (B. 1699-1702) Anne Wheatley (B. 1701-3; M. John Norris Nov 1717)(20) Elizabeth Wheatley (B. circa 1704-17) Susannah Wheatley (B. circa 1704-17) Mary Wheatley (B. circa 1704-17) Land records for Wheatley1s Contentment suggest that Mary married William Greenwell. The original certificate for the tract was issued to John in 1707. In 1723, Johnvs sons (John, Joseph, and Thomas) deeded that property to Greenwell, who died about 1727. After William's widow Mary married one Robert Hammett, the actual patent for the land was issued to William's only son and heir, the still minor James Greenwell. (21) Francis Wheatley (B. circa 1704-17 D. bef 7/20/1774)(22) All references in this section were researched by William S. Positive identification of the sundry John Wheatleys of St. Mary's is complicated by other land documents. The name Batchelor's Comfort, appended to this 1782 tract of John (presumably John II), has a feminine counterpart. On 5 Apr 1682, 100 acres called Maiden's Lott were patented to one Winefred Horn; and on 4 Aug 1685 the land was transferred to her then husband, John Wheatley of Calvert County, Md. No connection has been found to date between John of Calvert and John II of St. Mary's. Maiden's Lott was some five miles, as the crow flies, from the nearest tract of John II or the land of John I. State Archives. The Hodge File at the Md. State Archives, cataloging marriages implied through court records, makes the same assumption. The cited document shows that John Horn stood as surety for the widow of John II, an act that does imply a relationship of some type. Satisfactory evidence for the identification of John Horn as Winifred's husband has not been found, to the present writer's (Mr. Carley) knowledge. 19.) Perogative Court (wills) 22:140 20.) Harry A. Perogative Court (wills) 40:110 Dear researchers, This will be my third post and will start with the children of John Wheatly s/o John (immigrant). I'm going to change the format slightly on this and subsequent posts to make it easier to keep track of the numerous individuals of the same name in various generations. I'll number each individual sequentially and indicate those numbers in brackets at the beginning of the line on which that person appears. I'm also including citations within the text on this post. Let me know which format is easier to understand and I'll do it that way in future. This is getting complicated. Hope I haven't got lost along the way. Children of John Wheatley [1] [1] John Wheatley was born 1653 -1659; died between 4/25/l7l7 and 8/8/1717, and Elizabeth _____, who survived him and might be the mother of the children named in his Will. The order of birth listed corresponds to that found in his will and that of his brother Andrew. (Perogative Court (Wills) 2:235 and 388 Md. State Archives) (Colonial Settlers St. Clement's Bay : P 264) [2] James Wheatley s/o John Wheatley [1] was born circa 1688 and died before 1/14/1720.He married Elizabeth Cooper d/o Thomas Cooper and Katherine ______ Benson. Donnelly states they had two children, a boy, [12] James Wheatley and a daughter [13] Mary Wheatley. (Perogative Court (Accounts)4:76 Md. State Archives) (Colonial Settlers St. Clement's Bay : P 264) [3] John Wheatley s/o John [1] was born circa 1690 and died before 11/14/1770. (Perogative Court (Wills) 38:105) He married Elizabeth Nottingham . They had six sons, [14] John, [15] Thomas, [16] Richard, [17] Francis, [18] Elias, and [19] William Wheatley. William B. 1723 gave a deposition in 1747 that he was age 24. (Colonial Settlers St. Clement's Bay : P 264) [4] Winfrede Wheatley s/o John [1] was born circa 1692. She married Robert Rosson a joiner (carpenter). They had three children, [20] Elizabeth, [21] Ann, and [22] Mary Rosson. Robert Rosson wrote his will on 2/10/1733 and it was probated on 5/14/1773 (20:662). His wife Winfrede was named executrix and his three children were also named in the Will. (Colonial Settlers St. Clement's Bay : P 265) Also see Note 18 from my first Posting. [5] Joseph Wheatley s/o John [1] was born circa 1694 and married Martha ________. He wrote his Will 10/15/1739. (Perogative court (Wills) 22:140). It was probated 1/21/1739 and the estate was administered by his widow on 3/17/1739 (Colonial Settlers St. Clement's Bay : P 265). It is obvious that at least one of these dates has to be in error. Joseph could not have written the will in October of 1739 when it was probated (meaning that he was dead) in January of that same year 10 months previous. Donnelly cites (24:545) as the reference. This should obviously be checked. The couple had two children [23] James Wheatley and [24] Joseph Wheatley. [6] Thomas Wheatley was apparently born between 1699-1702; was under eighteen at the time of his father's 1717 Will, but was of legal majority in 1723 when he joined with his brothers in selling Wheatleys contentment to William Greenwell. (Provincial Land Office (Patents) E12:196 and IL#A:362); (Perogative Court (Accounts) 8:465); (Perogative Court (inventories) 12:139). Provincial Land Office (Patents) 21:196 cites the original deed as recorded in 7L:5(since destroyed). See also Charles E. and Laverne M. Fenwick, The Greenwell Family of Southern Maryland (Hand written manuscript, undated, at St. Mary's Co. Historical Society, Leonardtown), 10. Source citations are limited in the Greenwell Material.) [7] Ann Wheatley was born about l70l or 1703. This estimate is based on the premise that she was under 16 at the time of her father's will but at least 14 or 15 by the time she married John Norris in November of 1717. (Harry A. Davis, The Norris Family of Maryland and Virginia: Genealogy of Thomas Norris, 1631 - 1930 (Washington D.C.: P.p.,1941),26.) Additional proof of this marriage is furnished by the following facts:' 1. John Norris paid "rent" taxes on 164 acres of Wheatley's content in 1717. 2. By December 1761 Thomas Norris s/o John and Ann Norris died, leaving his sons Clement and John each one half of 150 acres of Wheatley's Content. He apparently acquired it from his parents for whom no wills or death records have been found. (Harry A. Davis, The Norris family of Maryland and Virginia. P. 26). [8] Elizabeth Wheatley , born circa 1704 - l7 [9] Susannah Wheatley , born circa 1704 - 17. [10] Mary Wheatley, born circa 1704 - 17. Land records for Wheatley's Contentment suggest that Mary married William Greenwell. The original certificate for the tract was issued to John in 1707. In 1723, John's sons (John, Joseph, and Thomas) deeded that property to Greenwell, who died about 1727. After William's widow Mary married one Robert Hammett, the actual patent for the land was issued to William's only son and heir, the still minor James Greenwell. (Provincial Land Office (Patents) E12:196 and IL#A:362);(Perogative Court (Accounts) 8:465); (Perogative Court (inventories) 12:139). Provincial Land Office (Patents) 21:196 cites the original deed as recorded in 7L:5 (since destroyed) See also Charles E. and Laverne M. Fenwick, The Greenwell Family of Southern Maryland (Hand written manuscript, undated, at St. Mary'sCo. Historical Society, Leonardtown), 10. Source citations are limited in the Greenwell Material.) Greenwell, Little, Donnally, Hardy, and Allied Families1' by A. Louise Shelton also has William Greenwell s/o James Greenwell and Grace Taylor listed as marrying Mary (no last name given). The couple had one son, [26] James Greenwell. But another Maryland Researcher, Charmaine Goemmer Welker, Has furnished a pedigree chart which shows a George Greenwell (B. 1730) s/o Thomas Greenwell and Mary Medley married to Mary Ann Wheatley who died before 1755, and had a son Ignatius who was born in 1750 and died in Kentucky in Are these two Mary Wheatleys identical ? I do not know. The names are similar except for the middle name of the second. Perhaps one of you will have an answer. [11] Francis Wheatley, born 1704 - 1717; died before 7/20/1 774. (Perogative court (Wills) 40:110) Children of James Wheatley [2] and Elizabeth Cooper When we come to James Wheatley [12] s/o James [2], there appear in Donnelly contradictions which tends to obscure what facts are present. On Page 264 of Colonial Settlers-St. Clement's Bay, Donnelly lists James Wheatly [12] as single with a note that he listed Thomas Cooper as Next of Kin in his inventory. This seems to imply that he never married. On the next page (265) she states that that same James Wheatley married Eleanor Gough Clarke Greenwell d/o James Gough and Priscilla Clark. Eleanor's mother however, was Priscilla Heard, not Priscilla Clarke. Donnelly further states correctly that Eleanor was the widow of John Basil Greenwell. Given what else she says in that passage, I tend to think it was a printing error, but if anyone has documentation or correction (in addition to Jerry Clark's post of 1/31/98 Re: Thomas Clarke/Grace Greenwell), it would seem warranted. They are listed as having two sons, [27] William and [28)Bennett Wheatley. The second child, I believe, should be BENEDICT not Bennett. There is a Bennett Wheatley listed in LDS records (LDS page 14,244) marrying Polly Morris in Caroline County on 1/17/1782. This record is directly below the entry for the birth of BENEDICT Wheatley to James and Eleanor 11/3/1766 in St. Mary's County . It would be easy to misread. [13] Mary Wheatley d/o James [2] married James Farthing s/o William Maria Farthing and Ann Shanks. James Farthing died by 6/25/1740 when his wife Mary administered his estate. They had one son, [29] James Farthing. His widow, Mary, married second Thomas Tarlton. (Colonial Settlers St. Clement's Bay : P 82, 264) Children of John Wheatley [3] and Elizabeth Nottingham (Colonial Settlers St. Clement's Bay : P 265) [14] John Wheatley [15] Thomas Wheatley [16] Richard Wheatley [17] Francis Wheatley married Ann and had four children. They had 7 children. There is a duplication of the information for Ignatius Wheatley [30) and Francis Wheatley [31] from my last post to make it easier to associate. There will be additional posts on various Wheatleys I have not been able to place as yet. It is possible they are from other Wheatley families as I indicated in my first post. There seems to be confusion about Edward Wheatley. Donnelly, in Colonial Settlers St. Clement's Bay, Gives his name as Edward Wheatley born 12/23/1765 s/o James Wheatley and Henrietta Norris and later moved to Washington County Kentucky but no date for the move is given. LDS files has an entry for an EDMUND Wheatley born on that same day to James Wheatley and Henrietta in St. Mary's County. Does anyone have information as to whether Edmund and Edward are the same person or not? Then from the Will of John Wheatley (Will book D: 218, 219 Washington County Ky.) and from information researchd by Tom Wheatley, Armstrong Lane Mt. Washington Ky., we have the following: John Wheatley died 1744 Francis Wheatley Sr. died 1749 Francis Wheatley Jr. (1723 - 1809) John Wheatley (1746 - 1827) and his family came to Kentucky from Charles Co. Md. to Fredricktown, Washington Co. Ky. In 1793. He had children. Will probated 1/22/1827. (Washington Co. Will book D:218,219) Ignatius Wheatley died 7/7/1834 - never married. EDWARD WHEATLEY (1775 - 2/21/1835) Married Elizabeth McIntyre 4/18/1799 John Wheatley (1774 - 12/17/1860) Married Sarah Hagan 11/6/1808 Eleanor Wheatley Born 1783 - never married. Mary Wheatley Elizabeth Wheatley Born 1789 Married Richard Doyle 11/23/1804. (Washington Co. Marriage Book 1:59) All of these people, according to Mr. Wheatley's research, were born in Maryland with the move to Kentucky coming in 1793.. The most likely place to connect these people in my view is as a son of John and Elizabeth Nottingham. Can anyone supply any dates or other information to corroborate this or to place them correctly? If the above is correct, then the attribution of Elizabeth McIntyre as the wife of Edward s/o James [23] and Henrietta Norris is in error and should be eliminated. 2. From Colonial Source records: Southern Maryland Catholic Families by Tim O'Rourke, we have recorded the marriage of Sylvester Wheatley to Sarah Medcalf (widow) on 3/21/1768 with a son,Sylvestor born 6/21/1771. A second entry records the marriage of Sylvestor Wheatley to Elizabeth Fraiser on 9/7/1773. Does anyone know if this was a second marriage, or another individual? 3. Also from O'Rourke, the following rent Roll information. January 1768 Manor of Mill St. Marys County Plat 5 9/29/1742 109 1/2 acres Martha Wheatley age 50 Joseph Wheatley age 30 Winifred Wheatley age 26 Plat 11 6/10/1758 29 acres Francis Cole Jr. age 32 Judith age 28 James Wheatley age 34 Could this Martha Wheatley be the widow of Joseph Wheatley [5] who died sometime before 1739/40 and Joseph [24] their son ? Does anyone know what the connection was between the Wheatleys and the Coles as implied by the second entry ? Dear Researchers, This will be my final post on Wheatleys of St. Mary1s County. If anyone is interested, I have a little information from Wills of DORCHESTER County on Wheatleys. If any of you want that, post me privately and I'll forward it. Some of these items can be easily placed in the descendant chart of John (1605) which has been posted. Other remain a mystery which I hope some of you might be able to solve. I received privately from Mike Corboy in Kentucky the following information which is self explanatory. "I have a Thomas WHEATLEY (1750?-1835) who married Martha Waring after he served in the Maryland militia in the Revolutionary War. He went to Mason County, Kentucky with his brother, John and wife Elizabeth (Waring) in the 1790s. Thomas' parents were John and Elizabeth (Nottingham) II >From LDS records George Wheatley and Elizabeth, his wife Henry bapt. 10 Jan 1755 Ann b. 12 Aug 1756 William b. 18 Sept 1762 Ignatius b. 25 Feb 1765 Bernard b. 29 May 1768 All the above family was from St. Mary's County Ann Wheatley d/o Mary born 10/17/1758 St. Mary's Co. Bessie Wheatley d/o Sampson Wheatley and Mary ______ born 12/10/1747 Somerset, Rehobeth, Coventry Parish. This one is probably not closely related. Catherine Wheatley d/o Raphael Wheatley and Rachel born circa 6/4/1820 Charles Co. This Raphael may possibly be [43] Raphael Wheatley S/O Ignatius [30] and Henrietta who later moved to Kentucky. Elizabeth Wheatley married George W. Thompson. (There are two entries here. I've included both with submission dates.) 1/30/1855 submitted 1971, 2/8/1855 submitted 1978. Francis Wheatley maried Priscilla Edelen 2/4/1798 Charles Co. Mattawoman >From Maryland Calendar of Wills page 174 Will of John Norris, St. Mary's County 4/13/1709 pr. 8/2/1710 To sons Thomas and Luke jointly and their hrs., 100 A., "Lugares Hills." Sons John and Marke, 164 A., Dwelling plantation, _______ Wife Susannah to have use of land last named during life. Both tracts to pass to daus. Monica, Eliza: and Mary should sons afsd. die without issue. Ex: not given Test: Thomas Wellham, Eliza: Wheatley, Thomas Nottingham. This shows connections of the Norris family to Wheatleys and Nottinghams. It is not surprising that these names appear since Elizabeth w/o John [3] was a Nottingham and Ann [7] married a Norris (Probably the John mentioned in the Will) . The most likely candidates for this Elizabeth would be Elizabeth Wheatley [8] d/o John [3], or Elizabeth Nottingham w/o John signing with her married name. >From "Colonial Source Records: Southern Maryland Catholic Families" by Timothy O'Rourke. July 1760 James Wheatley donated money to "Chapel of St. Mary's congregation" for a fund "To aid victims of the Boston Fire of 3/20/1760." I have no idea which James Wheatley this was. 8/22/1777 James Fish married Ann Wheatley James Wheatley born 1/15/1792 s/o Benedict Wheatley and Sarah. This may have been Benedict [28] 5/0 James Wheatley [12] and Eleanor Gough Clarke Greenwell. >From "History of Jesuit Missions of St. Mary's County" by Edwin Beitzell P. 96 Francis Clement Medley B. 12/14/1800, Bap. 2/1/1801 s/o Charles Medley and Elizabeth Wheatley. James Greenwell (age 26) s/o Clement Greenwell and Jane Townbarr married Elizabeth Wheatley (age 29) d/o James Wheatley and Henrietta Norris 5/14/1801. Elizabeth Wheatley here is easily identified as [40] Elizabeth Wheatley on the descendant list. Finally, we have my direct ancestor Henrietta Wheatley who married John Baptist Bowles s/o John Bowles and Monica Wooten about 1787 in St. Marys County Maryland. The marriage date is estimated from the birth of their first child,Walter Bowles, in 1788 in St. Mary's County. I have no idea whether this was a first marriage or if she was a widow. I have always assumed it was a first marriage because the couple had 7 children between 1788 and 1807. If she was much older than 18 at the time of marriage the reproductive span of 19 years would make her a bit old by the time the last child came along. John Baptist Bowles, or J. B. as he was called, seems to have outlived her but died in 1819. According to William G. O'Toole's "Theodore O'Toole Family History" (unpublished manuscript), John remarried to Sarah Bickett in Kentucky after Henrietta's death. (no dates given for either the death or second marriage). There were no children from his second Marriage and Sarah was supposed to have returned to Maryland after J.B.'s death. Information on the children of John Baptist Bowles and Henrietta Wheatley came from "Treasure up the Memories" by James Fredrick O'Nan who is a descendant of John Baptist Bowles. He cites Virkus "Compendium of American Genealogy as his source. I've been at the "brick wall" with Henrietta for over three years. Records in Scott County and present day Marion County were destroyed in fires and records in St. Marys County seem scarce for that period. If anyone knows anything which might provide even a glimmer of a clue, please let me know. Thanks for your indulgence.
