The Last Will of
Clement Mattingly
In the name of God, Amen. I Clement Mattingly of Saint Mary's County and State 
of Maryland, being sick and weak of body but of sound and perfect memory do make 
this my last will and Testament, in manner and form following that is to say, I 
bequeath my soul to almighty God, who gave it me, and as for the worldly goods, 
which it hath pleased God to give me, I do dispose of in manner and form 
following, Viz! My will and desire is, that all my just debts be paid by my 
executors hereafter named--------
Item. I give and bequeath unto my two loving Daughters, Ann Mattingly, and Ruth 
Mattingly my dwelling plantation called Nowles Purchase to them and their heirs 
forever, and it is my will and desire that if either of my aforesaid Daughters 
Ann and Ruth Mattingly should die without heirs, that the said Land Should go to 
the survivor. I likewise give and bequeath unto my two aforesaid daughters Ann 
Mattingly and Ruth Mattingly, all my stock and household goods of any kind 
whatsoever, either at my said Dwelling plantation or at the late dwelling 
plantation of my Father.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my little Grandson John Mattingly all that part 
of the late dwelling plantation of my Father called Great Saint Thomas, also all 
that part of Audry Land, which lies on the East side of the Main Road, which 
land, from the Cold Springs towards Chaptico, together with my water Mill, and 
the Lands thereunto adjoining, being a Slip of Land called Mattinglys Land, and 
a small parcel which my Father purchased of Thomas Warren, to him and his heirs 
forever---
Item. I give and bequeath unto my little Grandson John McWilliams all the main 
Road, leading from the Cool Springs to Chaptico, to him and his heirs forever---
--Item I give and bequeath unto my little Grandson Clement McWilliams, all my 
Land called Mount Misery, lying in the Mill swamp, to him and his heirs 
forever.----------
Item. I give unto my loving son, John Mattingly, now a priest Twenty pounds 
Current money of the State, to be paid him by my executors on his arrival in 
Maryland.---- Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Mattingly's Children 
Viz: Ann, Elizabeth, Mary, and John Mattingly Eighty pounds common Currency of 
this State to be equally divided amongst them, in full of all their Fathers part 
of my Estate, either Real or personal.--- My will and desire is that all my 
Negroes, as also, all the money which I may have at my death, and all the 
residue and remainder of my estate may be equally divided amongst my four 
Daughters, to wit, Elizabeth, McWilliams, Mary McWilliams,, Ann Mattingly and 
Ruth Mattingly but it is my will and desire that all the negroes which I have 
heretofore given my two aforsaid Daughters Elizabeth McWilliams and Mary 
McWilliams, may be first included in the appraisement.
Item. My Will and desire is, that incase my Grandson John Mattingly should die 
without lawful Issue, or before he arrives at age, that all the Lands and Mill 
which I have bequeathed him, may go to my two aforsaid Daughters, Ann Mattingly 
and Ruth Mattingly to be equally divided between them and their heirs, and my 
will is, that if either of the above named Ann or Ruth Mattingly should die 
leaving no heir, that the above said Land should go to the survivor and their 
heirs forever.----Lastly, I do hereby nominate and appoint Thomas McWilliams, 
and my two loving Daughters, Ann Mattingly and Ruth Mattingly, to be Executors 
of this my last will---
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal, this 
Twelfth day of December, one thousand, seven hundred and seventy Eight.------

On the back of the foregoing was the following, to wit:-----------------
Saint Mary's County, ss, the 20th day of June 1780. There came Philip Ford & 
Robert Thompson, two of the three subscribing witnesses to the within Last Will 
and testament of Clement Mattingly late of Saint Mary's County deceased, and 
made oath on the holy evangels of almighty god, that they did see the Testator 
therein named, Sign and Seal this will, and that they heard him publish, 
pronounce, and declare the same to be his last will and Testament, that at the 
time of his so doing, he was to the best of their apprehensions of sound and 
disposing mind, memory & understanding and that they respectively subscribed 
their names as witnesses to this will in the presence, and at the request of the 
Testator, and in the presence of each other, and also that they did see Charles 
Thompson subscribe his name as a witness to this will.
