Written: December 1662 1662 This day Mr. Edward Lloyd and his servant, John "Newman", claiming his freedom, his said master having served Fower years next January being in the year one thousand six hundred sixty three. Talbot Co. Court Proc. 1662-1674, p. 363. Additional Comments: According to the Provincial "Conditions of Plantation", John Newman(Newnam) had to declare his age as 20 or over to be indentured for only 4 years, indicating his birth by 1642. In Wills, 205, 18 (1708/09) he gave age corresponding to birth in 1642,. In Depositions in 1711, 1714, and 1715 he gave ages indicating birth in 1645, 1646, and 1644 resp.- perhaps his arithmetic was not too good, he signed Land Records with a crude cross indicating no formal education.
