Both James and Hattie were born and lived their entire lives in the Clear Spring, Maryland area. Both are buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, approximately a half mile east of Clear Spring, Maryland. James and Hattie were the parents of Charles Raymond Yost, our 'Pappy' born August 1, 1904, died Oct 8, 1980. Pappy lived his whole life in the Clear Spring Maryland area. 'Pappy' Charles Raymond Yost worked in logging and was a retired employee of Washington County Roads Department. In the 1910 census, Charles Raymond Yost is shown at age 6 living with his parents James and Hattie Yost on Ore bank Road, Clear Spring, Maryland. The next record in the 1930 census shows Charles Raymond Yost at age 26 and married to Rosie Viola Mills. They are shown living with Rosie Mills’ parents Amos and Lela Mills on Route 40, Fairview Mountain, Clear Spring, Maryland and they had two children, Charles Calvin Yost, age 3 and Raymond Richard known as 'Bud' Yost, age 1. Charles Raymond Yost and Rosie Viola Yost had twelve children on the homestead on Route 40, Fairview Mountain, Clear Spring, Maryland. After their property was bought by the town of Clear Spring, they moved to Mill Street, Clear Spring, Maryland. Their home on Mill Street was bought by the State of Maryland for Highway 70 expansion. They built their new home off of Mill Street, Clear Spring, Maryland in the early 1960's. Charles Raymond Yost died October 8th, 1980 at Washington County Hospital of liver cancer; he was 76 years old. Charles Raymond Yost was buried with his wife Rosie Viola Mills Yost, who died in September of 1975 at Washington County Hospital of heart failure. She was 64 year old. They both are buried at Saint Paul Church Cemetery Clear Spring, Maryland, approximately 1 mile east of Clear Spring, Maryland. The father of Charles Raymond Yost was James William Yost, who was shown living in the 1900 US census with his Uncle, Joshua B. Yost, born Dec. 26, 1851, died Aug. 6, 1908, and Joshua's wife Indiana Mills born Apr. 29, 1854; died 1916. According to family members of James William Yost, Joshua B. Yost and his wife Indiana Mills Yost raised James William Yost, who is listed as a nephew to Joshua B. Yost. James William Yost’s obituary stated his parents were Joyce and Alice Yost. I'm sure that it is a misspelling for the name Joyce. Alice Virginia Yost was the sister of Joshua B. Yost and the mother of James William Yost. The father of James William Yost is still a family mystery. Family members stated that they remembered that there was a cloud that hovered over the parents of James William Yost. Joshua B. Yost and his wife, Indiana Mills Yost, who had no children of their own, raised James William Yost as their own. Alice Virginia Yost would have given birth to James William Yost in September of 1879. Alice was not married until 1884 to a Bazil Powell and according to family members, died within a year after her marriage to Bazil. No death record or tombstone was found for Alice V. Yost but according to family members, they believed Alice is buried at Maysville Cemetery in the Sleepy Creek area in West Virginia. The father of Joshua B. Yost was William Yost, Jr., born about 1820 in the Morgan County, West Virginia area known as Sleepy Creek. Joshua B. Yost is shown living with his parents William Yost, Jr. and Elizabeth Clark Yost in the 1860 census at age 9. They were living in the Morgan County area in West Virginia known in 1860 as Virginia. William Yost, Jr. and Elizabeth Clark Yost were married in Morgan County on September 27, 1850 by a Mathias Widmyer. They had six children all born in Morgan County, West Virginia according to the 1860 census. The first born of William Yost, Jr. and Elizabeth Clark Yost was Joshua B. Yost, born 1851. The second born was Mary Jane Yost, born 1853, third born was George W. Yost, born 1855, fourth born Sarah E. Yost, born 1858, fifth born was Alice V. Yost, born 1859, sixth born was Luther C. Yost, born 1860. By the 1870 census, Elizabeth Clark Yost had a seventh child with John W. Frank. His name was Charles W. Frank, born 1869 in Clear Spring, Md. Joshua B. Yost was the first born of William Yost, Jr. and Elizabeth Clark Yost. Joshua was born in Morgan County, West Virginia. Joshua had moved to the Clear Spring, Maryland area at the age of 15 with his mother, Elizabeth Clark Yost Frank, who had remarried to a John W. Frank shown in the 1870 census. Mr. John Frank was from the state of Georgia. John W. Frank is believed to have been a solider from Georgia, which explains how Elizabeth Clark Yost may have met John Frank during the Civil War. Elizabeth Clark Yost Frank was much older than her new husband, John Frank, by at least 19 years. After the 1870 census, there is no record of Elizabeth Clark Yost Frank and John Frank and the Yost children except for Joshua B. Yost. It is believed by family members that John Frank may have moved the family to Georgia. William Yost, Jr. is picked up in the 1880 census and shown as remarried to Eve A. Stotler and still living in Morgan County. We were able to confirm through family members of James William Yost, his daughter Mary Yost Dailey, before her death, who remembered that James William Yost and Grandfather Joshua B. Yost had a step family in Morgan County who would visit. We were able to find a Herald Mail newspaper article dated September, 1929 showing Joseph Thomas Yost, the son of William Yost, Jr. and Eve A. Stotler Yost and Joseph Thomas Yost's son, George Grafton Yost with George Grafton Yost's daughters Pauline and Patty Yost all being present for James William Yost’s 50th birthday party at James’ home on Ore bank Road, Clear Spring, Maryland. Joshua B. Yost was a farmer who married Indiana Mills from the Clear Spring, Maryland area. They had no children of their own but raised James William Yost, son of Joshua's sister, Alice V. Yost. Joshua B. and Indiana Mills lived their lives in the Clear Spring area and are buried at Green Spring Cemetery on Route 56, Clear Spring, Maryland. James William Yost married Hattie Magdalene Snyder, who was from the Clear Spring, Maryland area. James and Hattie Yost had four children, starting with the first born, William Joshua Yost, born August 26, 1901 and died February 23, 1902. He was only 6 months old at death.
