VR Minot 38 VR Poland 107 VR New Gloucester 251 ARNOLD Lloyd died 2 June 1879 in Auburn ME [VR Auburn ME] ASHE John E Capt "the founders of teh shoe industry in Auburn have nearly all passed away .... This is Capt John E Ashe of the firm of Ashe, Noyes, & Small. Capt Ashe has been with this industry from its infancy and has witnesses all the changes. He helped to rock its cradle and he is with in the full tide its strength and power. Capt Ashe came from strong stock, his maternal grandfather (John Richardson) who married Lydia Willard and became pioneers in the town of Buckfield. His father was John Ashe who was born in Edinboro Scotland. John Ashe (Sr) had his experience while in an English merchantman. They were caught by pirates on the Spanish main and in the fight Mr Ashe had one bullet put thru his thigh and another tore its way thru his arm. The ship managed to escape in a battered conditions, but with the loss of several man. In those days the life of a sailor was hard one. At a later date Mr Ashe was impressed into the service of an English merchantman and was compelled to serve until he resolved this country. He was then free and immediately quit the sea. For a short time he remained in St John and then came to Portland where he met a horseman from Buckfield and entered his service.
