GREENE.

Seven miles N. E. of Auburn. On M. C. R. R. Originally a part of Lewiston
Plantation. Settled in 1773. First represented in general court by Luther
Robbins. Post-office established, 1790. Incorporated the 55th town, June 18,
1788, and named in honor of Gen. Greene. Population-1850, 1348; 1860, 1224;
1870,1094; 1880, 999. Valuation, 1860-Polls, 303; Estates, $338,402; 1870-Polls,
315; Estates, $439,629; 1880-Polls, 279; Estates, $394,260.
