W. of Auburn. Mechanic Falls, on G. T. R., terminus of stage-routes to Poland; West Poland, Webb's Mills, and Auburn. Formerly embraced the present towns of Minot and Auburn. Minot, embracing Auburn, set off in 1802. Portion of Poland set off to Danville 1852. Incorporated the 93d town Feb. 17, 1795. Name supposed to be derived from an Indian chief. First settled minister, Rev. Jonathan Scott. Population-1795, 1400; 1850, 2660; 1860, 2746; 1870, 2436; 1880, 2442.
