Ebenezer HAM & Col. William Garcelon Day Books (1834) Ebenezer Ham was living in Lewiston, ME when he wrote his diary; however, he has made a good personal record to many Lisbon & Webster, Maine. William Garcelon was also living in living in South Lewiston, ME. Lewiston Falls means the settlement both sides of the Androscoggin River near the present Gov Longley Bridge (formerly called the North Bridge). Where Lewiston Corner was we really do not know but we are working on finding the location. Ebenezer Ham's Day Book 1834 24 Mar 1834 - Minutes of the division line fence between James Thomas & John Cushing is as follows: I, John Cushing doe agree to build and support a good and sufficient fence to stop horses, sheep & his own cattle, one hundred & twelth (112) rods begining at the corner of Stephen Lowell's and William Lowell's lot on the hill thence South westerly to the stake and stones where James Thomas builds to. [EH] 28 May 1834 - Clear & Pleasant: Brother James (Garcelon) held plow for me. By S Carville, Henry went to Mill for him & us. Daniel drove oxen to plow. I go to Lisbon (ME) to Capt Kilgore to run land for him. Pleasant day. Then to run a lot in Topsham (ME) which he bought of Jona E Telford & divided it with Jas S Hewey. [WG] 29 May 1834 - Planted broom corn. [EH] 29 May 1834 - Rather Dull Weather. (I) contued to run land & make a place, Brother James (Garcelon) moved with his family from our house to William Jones. Mother Davis came to our house. [WG] 30 May 1834 - missing [EH] 30 May 1834 - Quite rainey. I staid at Hewey's & contined my plan & runing lines. Considerable rainey. [WG] 31 May 1834 - Finished planting potatoes. [EH] 31 May 1834 - Thick & foggy. Continued at Hewey's & finished dividing lot between Hewey & Kilgore and they paid me $8 cash in full for my pay. I came home PM rather unwell. [WG] 1 June 1834 - SUNDAY: went to meeting. Forenoon warm & pleasant. PM Cloudy signs of rain. [EH] 1 June 1834 - SABBATH: Rather cloudy but quite warm. It faired away. I went with Alonzo (Garcelon) to SMH (South Meeting House). Dea Golder & Daniel Davis 2d in proved as speakers & some others. The apple trees in full blossom. [WG] 2 June 1834 - Went to Lisbon, George Booiber (Bubier) worked on road with yeak oxen. Cold PM Wind N & heavy. [EH] 2 June 1834 - Thick & foggy. Preparing to wash sheep. We went & washed 47 sheep. Capt Fuller & T Hodgkin washed the same time. Brother James (Garcelon) & Cyrus (________) helped myself, D Webber & Henry (______). I came home at noon. It fared away. Brother Simeon Estes was at our house, he put his horse to my white mare 2d time as she was put on 31 ult. He also attend a colt for Jas Hodgkin for 50 cents. He also cast one for me. But did not suceed in attening him. I have been making a scraper for to work on the road tomorrow. [WG] 3 June 1834 - Went to Lisbon on the road, Selectmen of Lisbon worked Taxes. Cold light wind in N. [EH] 3 June 1834 - Clear but quite cool with a high wind. We commeneced work on the road at the crotch of the road near N. Litchfield. I worked 10 hours & D Webber & oxen 30 at $3.75, Henry worked 10 hours allowed $1.00, the scraper I made allowed $1.00, the cart nothing, broke my old plow. Total $5.75. STephen Davis, surveyor of the road. [WG] 4 June 1834 - Sold Pig to Joseph Frye at $1.50 [EH] 4 June 1834 - Clear & pleasant. Worked on the road today myself 10 hours, J Webber 10 hrs, & Dan'l 10 hrs $3.75, Hery $1. oxen 10 hrs & Alex 5 hrs = 2.87. Plus cart 13 cents (total $6.75) My road tax 1834 is $19.31, Cr for 1833 was $8.54 = $10.77. $12.50 worked less $10.77 tax due = $1.78 overworked. [WG] 5 June 1834 - Went to Portland (ME) [EH] 5 June 1834 - Rather foggy & cool but fared away. J Webber has helped me shear my sheep. He sheared 24 & I steared to making 34 in all. Brother James (Garcelon) sheared his 13 in all. We had 20 lambs in all. Five James which we marked a slit in right ear & cross off of left ear & pauled the letter I on the right hand side. Three weathers & two euws. I had 15 lambs, 7 weathers & 8 ews. I maked my sheep the letter C on rear side with wheat green oil. Alonzo (Garcelon) went to Brunswick (ME). Henry has been to falls to Mill & to Brunswick (ME) with Alonzo with which mare he got home at 10 O'clock. He went to Mill with the mare before he went to Brunswick. He got two Bus'l oats at A Davis. [WG] 6 June 1834 - Bought Goods in Portland & came from Portland to Lisbon. [EH] 6 June 1834 - Rather hasey, the wind whefting. I sowed two bus barley & wheat & three bus oats over by S Carvill's. Dan'l harrowed it in. Brother James (Garcelon) helped me trim & edge oak plank & loaded them up for Cat Hanse. I sent Henry & got two bus of oaks & 124 # of hay at D Garcelon's. I had N Litchfield's wheels to go to Cat Hanse with oak planks his to have mine in return. I butched a calf for brother James. Brother James sat out with team he had my oxen & his & Elias Jackson went in the night, I let him have 50 cents cash. [WG] 7 June 1834 - Sheared the sheeps, J Trufant & D Davis to help me. Turned into pasture 12 sheep belonging to Mrs Barker, 7 do J Barker, 19 do to me, & 1 do to P M Garcelon. (?) ewe lambs belonging to Mrs Barker & Jacob, & 5 do Rams belonging to same 3 ewe lambs belonging to me & 2 wether lambs belonging to me in all 39 sheep & 18 lambs. [EH] 7 June 1834 - Clear & pleasant, dumy the night past. I went to Cat Hanse with my horse & waggon. Started at 3 O'clock AM. Went to C Hanse sold my plank to S Gray Esq. Had 385 ft at $60 - they came to 2310 he paid cash. We had a good time. Some showery in PM. We got home before sun set & estenment in company with us I came home by way of William Ford Jr place in Bowdoin (ME). He has left the place & moved to Lisbon (ME) & took a place, a man by the name Ebenezer Gelush lives on the Ford place. [WG] 8 June 1834 - SUNDAY: Went to Minot (ME) to meeting. First warm day for sometime. [EH] 8 June 1834 - SABBATH: Clear & pleasant & warm. I went with wife to Friends Meeting. Warm at 5 O'clock. I went with S D Garcelon to SMH (South Meeting House) Elder Bridge had a lecture there, it has been a very warm day. [WG] 9 June 1834 - Killed a calf, went (to)? the corner, also Geo went to after boards. (It was) very warm. [EH] 9 June 1834 - Clear pleasant & warm. I sowed hay seed in the morning, brother James & E Merrill came to my house. James carried his wool home. I went to Lewiston falls (ME) for & with E Merrill to settle with Edward Little. We suceeded & Merrill retured home. I went to John Randalls to collect tax. Returned to falls paid S Pichard $2 each for my subscription on Temperance papers. Also $1 for Amos Davis & S Merrill. I then went & paid J M Frye $25 & took up note int 25 cents, then to Lewiston corner & settled school house assessment with town Treasurer & took reipt in full. Lowell paid me $10.26 in full balance due on said Randall's & B Given's taxes 1833. I gave a recept. I then went to N Reynold's paid him 4 cash for grammar book over looked on settlement last winter. I then came to C Gorham's he extracted a tooth for me. I paid him 9 cents cash in full. I then came home & assisted about planting. There was a man by the name of William Adams who says he can make us a first rate cheese press & went to work & sawed some plank & left at evening saying he should return in morning. William DIngley came & paid me $6.92. I paid little for E Merrill. D- E Merril for my services in assisting you settle with E Little & writing to R William and other services $1.25 or $1.50. [WG] 10 June 1834 - Fenced Turnip yard, carried wool to mill, 3 bundles: 1-34#, 1-17.5#, and 1-3.5#. Warm & signs of rain. [eh] 10 June 1834 - Clear & pleasant, rather cooler & quite dry. We finished planting potatoes. Jos Webber came about 10 O'clock AM and worked until 4 PM. I went to the river. I carried one calf skin for Asa to Tan I shall settle with brother James for it. It has been a warm day. It showed a little at evening & looks like rain. [WG] 11 June 1834 - Went to D Jones to get blacksmith work done. Cleaned out cellar. Geo cut bushes. Rainy in the morning. Clear PM. [EH] 11 June 1834 - A Warm rain, which is much needed, it seems to revive vegitation, choring about at 9 O'clock it holds up. Daniel & oxen gows to help brother James plow for potatoes. Asa Merrill came & helped me work timber this PM. Henry helps Jos Webber hoe this PM very warm. A Merrill concludes to stay all night & help me tommorrow. [WG] 12 June 1834 - Went to Lisbon. Geo hoed corn, first this season, Cool wind North. [EH] 12 June 1834 - Clear & rather cool high wind at NW. A Merrill helped me hoe the AM. Daniel & Henry helped J Webber hoe PM. I went to see S S Smith about saving tomorrow. I went & got D Jones to shoe white mare. He has put two on my my mare. Brother Jmaes got Jona. Hodgkin to ?? it yesterday. He is to pay him. Gen Anderson paid me $7.10 cash & took up his note. [WG] 13 June 1834 - Went to Lewiston Falls & to Lisbon, Geo went to Freeport (ME) carried 6 pounds potash for B H Thorn & 2 M shinles for self, warm and showey. [EH] 13 June 1834 - Rather hasey & looks some like rain. I hauld out oak timber for Merrill & Smith to saw. I am preparing to go to Bangor (ME). Mary Ann (his dau) goes with me. I set out for Bangor at 11 O'clock AM. It cleared away rather cool. Went to Augusta & put up at Roger's all night. Expenice $1.62. [WG] 14 June 1834 - Went to Freeport (ME) worked on the road in the afternoon. George came from Freeport. Windy & cold. [EH] 14 June 1834 - Clear splant. Went as far as James Bennet's in Troy (ME). Put up all night. Brother Moses (Garcelon) boarded there. Quite a frost last night. [WG] 15 June 1834 - SUNDAY: Was at home all day, Cold weather with signs of rain. Barton Anderson's oxen turned into pasture. [EH] 15 June 1834 - SABBATH: Clear & pleasant quite warm today. Attended the funeral of a Mrs Mitchell who died in Troy (ME) her folks carried her to the town of Jackson (ME) to bury. I went to Hampden (ME) in the PM. Put up at Abel Pettengill's all night. [WG] 16 June 1834 - At home though the day, examined taxbills, Geo hoed corn in the AM. Rainy & Warm. School began. [EH] 16 June 1834 - Rather cloudy and some rainey. Went & looked at Pettengill's land. PM we went to Bangor, put up at John P Davis all night, put horse up at Thomas Mansels. [WG] 17 June 1834 - Went to the Falls with team got wool from the machine. Sold one bbl cider to Johnson. Geo hoed corn. Cloudy & Due. Corn small for the season. [EH] 17 June 1834 - Clear & pleasant warm. WEnt to Old Town (ME) put up at Mary Dingley & horse at Wadleight stable. [WG] 18 June 1834 - Harrowed among corn stack garden peas. Went to fathers. The greates fall of rain for the season. Wind from the North. [EH] 18 June 1834 - Cloudy & looks like rain. Went to Stillwater to dedication of Methodist Meeting House. ELder Hall preached, Joan Davis went with us. We returned to Old Town (ME). [WG] 19 June 1834 - Sawed shingles tumbers with George, mended the road, cloudy with appearance of rain. [EH] 19 June 1834 - Rainy through the night & continued wet throught the day. I have visited & settled bills of expence of General Dingley. AT evening heard Doc't Helman deliver an address on Temperance at the school house. [WG] 20 June 1834 - Went to the Falls, Geo haulded manure. [EH] 20 June 1834 - Thick & cloudy. Left Old Town (ME), came to Bangor (ME) on my reture home put up at P Davis & horse at Mansell's. [WG] 21 June 1834 - Went to Lisbon, saw selectmen of that Town, paid Sandborn $32. Geo howed corn. [EH] 21 June 1834 - Clear & pleasant. Left Bangor (ME) & came to Carmell (ME) put up at John Fuller's. [WG] 22 June 1834 - SUNDAY: Went to meeting, Pleasant & growing weather. [EH] 22 June 1834 - SABBATH: Clear & pleasant. Visited Sister Jane (Garcelon) Benson's. (his widowed sister) She went with us to St Albans (ME). David Fuller carried her, put at Harris Garcelon. [WG] 23 June 1834 - Harrowed among corn, wrote a letter to Seward & enclosed fifteen dollars that Father sent to him. 23 June 1834 - Clear & plan & quite warm. Stayed at Harris Garcelon's. [WG] 24 June 1834 - Went to Lisbon in AM. Hoed corn near the house second time. Rany in AM. Mr William Jones turned his oxen into pasture. 24 June 1834 - Looks like a storm. Sat out from St Albans (ME) came to Pittsfield, put up at Samuel Getchel's. It has been a very rainy day. [WG] 25 June 1834 - Hoed corn, Alfred White came to my house & left excution grant B Graffam & Writ against E & W Hatch. 25 June 1834 - Cleared away. From Pittsfield (ME) went to Vassalborough (ME), put up at Joseph Howland. [WG] 26 June 1834 - Hoed potatoes in Garden, took spare three year old steers from Benjamin Graffam on expence in favour of Alfred White. 26 June 1834 - Clear & pleasant. Came to Augusta (ME) visited the State House and arrived home at 9 O'clock PM, found all our folks well there. Has been a shower this PM. Attended meeting & went to see Dr Dwelley Maris Benson went to brother Fuller's today. [WG] 28 June 1834 - Served writ on Benj Graffam in favour of Parsons & John Smith. Settled with William Colson/Courson & Samuel D Rand. George & Jacob hoed for Martha Brooks. 29 June 1834 - SUNDAY: Went to meeting. Rainy & Cool for the season. 29 June 1834 - SABBATH: Attended protracted Meeting. Very hard rain. [WG] 30 June 1834 - Hoed potatoes went to help Father (James Ham) raise barn. Cloudy & Cool. 30 June 1834 - Cloudy not much rain. Ground wet. About home in forenoon, PM I went & helped James Ham raise a barn. [WG] 1 Jul 1834 - Went to Lisbon, Geo hoed potates. Cloudy & cold fall of rain at night. 1 Jul 1834 - Cloudy the ground wet. I have been to the falls to mill. I got my horse shod at Davis. I paid him 40 cents cash. I got 1/2 bussel rye at Hatch's settled for it & some corn at N Davis Jr. He owed me. I bout 30 # nails at Pickards & 17.5 # at Phillips at 6.25 cents for brother Jmaes. [WG] 3 Jul 1834 - Sawed shingle staff at the house. Cloudy in AM warm in PM. 3 Jul 1834 - Rainey in the morning. I haulded a stone up to Joseph Purinton he left them for me if it would answer my purpose. I took my wheels to Isaac Goddard to repair he put three cents in old wheel. I went & made a deed & other writings, John Graffam to Oliver Graffam. O G paid me 7/6 cash for my fee. [WG] 4 Jul 1834 - George went home, I hoed the gardin. Rev'd Grant delived a discource on Temperance at the South Meetinghouse. Warm & growing weather. 4 Jul 1834 - Clear & pleasant AM. I got Capt Ames to make 25 tire nails & he helped me put on 5 streaks of tire on old wheel I found. I then went to SMH to hear Rev Grant give an address on Temperance. 29 joined our society. Quite a good address. PM helped load up oak plank to haul to cat Hance. brother James went. [WG] 5 Jul 1834 - Self & wife went to Brunswick (ME). Geo & Jacob hoed potatoes. 5 Jul 1834 - Clear & Pleasant. I went to Lisbon (ME) by request of Israel Ham & run out land he bought of Benjamin Ham & made deeds of the same. They paid me $2 cash for my fees. Brother James has been to Cat hance self & oxen. It has been a very warm day. [WG] 6 Jul 1834 - SUNDAY: Came from Brunswick. 6 July 1834 - SABBATH: Clear & pleasant & warm. I went to Friends MH in AM. PM to South MH. at five O'clock attended Sabbath school. [WG] 7 Jul 1834 - Hoed potatoes. 7 Jul 1834 - Clear pleasant & warm vegitation grows fast. I hoed in AM S S Smith helped all day. PM I went to upper end of town for Luther C Taylor to divide land for him & Asa & B C Taylor & B Coburn met & made the agreement & adjoured to tomorrow. William Jones & David helped hoe this PM. I came home Mary Ann (his dau) went to Col Herricks. [WG] 8 Jul 1834 - Hoed potatoes & finished for first time saw corn spindled first theseason. S H Read delivered tax bills for 1834. 8 Jul 1834 - Clear & warm. I went to L C Taylor & met Dea Lutcher Litchfield & Stephen Stetson. We proved to examine Lot *4, both timber & other privileges, & then divided said lot between Asa Taylor & Bart Taylor & Bart Coboun(?). We made out our report & they passed deeds of acqutian & I came home they paid me $3.25 each, for my fees $2.00 Litchfield & $2.00 Stetson. S S Smith helped ??? for me with James Hodgkin stayed till about 2 O'clock thunder sounded & then did no more for me. Brother James has been to the falls with shingle ??? to mill. D Graffam left $50 my hand this day. [WG] 9 Jul 1834 - Hoed corn second time very warm. 9 Jul 1834 - Clear & very warm. I went & cut one oak stick & maple for cart tongue. Brother James (Garcelon) helped hew them at door & fixed cart wheels & body. Went home at evening with both pair of oxen. Daniel & Hanry are howing there days. [WG] 10 Jul 1834 - Hoed corn in AM & finished for second hoeing, sowed english turnips. 10 Jul 1834 - Quite warm. The boys finish howing today. Rather more air stiring than there was yesterday. Account of Oak plank sold to Samuel Gray 2d load 222 ft $60 = 13.32; 3d load 225ft $60 = 13.50 total $26.82. Recieved brother James paid over to me $26.00 cash. [WG] 11 Jul 1834 - Hauled Shingle stuff to mill set horse & wagon to Warren (Ham) to go to Bath, ME. 11 Jul 1834 - Clear explan?? warm. Benjamin Littlefield helped me shingle on my barn. Henry helped Samuel Littlefield hoe ?? to pay for his work. I paid 10 cents cash to both Daniel Webber helph Litchfield on his own account. [WG] 12 Jul 1834 - Made four pitch fork handles. Geo hoed corn near house third time. Planted Ruta-Baga among corn. 12 Jul 1834 - Clear & warm. Asa Merrill came & helped me saw oak plank in noon used sawed 156 feet. I gave him credit for his work on a note I hold against him. Daniel & Henry went to help brother James. Daniel helped his father hoe PM one half day. PM I shingled on my barn. [WG] 13 Jul 1834 - SUNDAY: Went to meeting, James Barker & Hazo Field went to Brunswick, ME. Very warm. 13 Jul 1834 - SABBATH: Clear & pleasant AM, I went to Friends Meeting. PM to the South meeting House. My wife went to her mothers. I went after her at evening. [WG] 14 Jul 1834 - Worked on barn, hauled & hewed one sill for the large barn. Cut my foot a little, mended the bridge on the road heading to the river road. 14 Jul 1834 - Some cloudy quite warm. Joseph Webber helped me hand out one oak stick & helped grind & ???. PM I went down to James place helped commese board shed. Daniel & Henry helped Cyrus hoe potatoes. David Trull & wife came to our house on a visit. My folks sent after me. It was very warm, dull hay weather. 15 Jul 1834 - Cloudy & showerly, David Truel & wife at our house. Went ............ can't read ????? 16 Jul 1834 - Was sick with the head ache most of the day, went to J Turner's in the afternoon & fixed four forks. Geo mowed. Warm & dull. 17 Jul 1834 - Worked on the barn & hung a gate. Geo mowed a little in AM. Warm but dull hay weather, showery for the three days past. 18 Jul 1834 - I went (to) D T Jones & got James' coalt shod. Called at William Bucknam's and saw corn silked first for this season. Geo hoed potatoes, and raked hay in afternoon, B Anderson took oxen out of pasture. 19 Jul 1834 - Mowed in AM, raked & hauled in three loads of hay in the PM. First got in pleasant & vegitation very rapid - corn looks promising. 20 July 1834 - SUNDAY: Went to hear Mr Woodman preach at Danville, (ME). Thomas Jordan & wife came to our house. Corn silked first seen on my farm this year. Warren Ham & Sarah Gofham/Gorham were married. 21 Jul 1834 - Mowed in AM in the old orchard. Hauld in three loads hay in afternoon. A shower of rain at night. 22 Jul 1834 - Moved the most of the day, had William Jones to help me. 23 Jul 1834 - Mowed about four acres of heavy grass, had Benjamin Rand to help. 24 Jul 1834 - Mowed a little in the morning raked & hauled in three loads of hay the remainder of the day. Jacob Barker & wife came to my house at night. Rec'd a letter from Seward. 25 Jul 1834 - Mowed about one and half acres near the road. Raked & hauled in eight loads hay. Jacob Barker helped me. William B Jordan had horse & wagon to go to Portland (ME). Warren & his wife, were at my house in the PM. 26 Jul 1834 - Hauled in five loads hay. Jacob Barker went from my house. Very warm & good hay weather though the week past. Geo & I got some cherries at Elder Cole's. Shower at night with thunder & lightning. 27 Jul 1834 - SUNDAY: At home all day warm with showers. 28 Jul 1834 - Hoed the garden & transplanted cabbage plants. Mowed in the afternoon. 29 Jul 1834 - Mowed all day self, Geo, & Andrew Lowell. Shower at noon. 30 Jul 1834 - Geo & I mowed in the AM, raked in the PM. 31 Jul 1834 - Finished mowing in the large field, hauled in five loads hay, with help of Christopher Boobier/Bubier. Shower in PM. 31 Jul 1834 - State Convention at Augusta (ME) nominated Hon P Sprague for Govonner. 1 Aug 1834 - Mowed the orchard, hauled in two loads hay, Christopher Boobier/Bubier helped me. 2 Aug 1834 - Served a writ on John V Davis. Hauled in six loads of hay. Finished haying. Elias Jordan had my horse to New Gloucester (ME). Had thirty five loads of hay this year, cost about thirty five days work exclusive of Jacob & the horse to rake. 3 Aug 1834 - SUNDAY: Went to meeting. S H Reed & wife were at my house in the PM. 4 Aug 1834 - My self & Geo recalled flax, went to Lewiston Falls (ME) got cloth of J Lowell for pantloons, to see with Mr Newell to make them. Warm & dry. 5 Aug 1834 - Hoed turnip, beans, potatoes. Went to the Falls, the corner .......? 6 Aug 1834 - Began to reap wheat. Started to go to Wiscasset with James Lowell, we stayed at J Barker's in Brunswick (ME) at the night. Very warm. 7 Aug 1834 - Went from Brunswick (ME) to Wiscasset (ME) to attend County Convention. Benjamin Baindell of Bath (ME); William McLellen of Werren (ME); Lucius Barnard & S H Read of Lewiston (ME); were nominated as candidates for the senate from the County of Lincoln. Jeremiah Bailey for the Reprentative to Congress. Shower & lighning that night. 8 Aug 1834 - Came from Brunswick (ME) AM. Mowed wheat in PM. 9 Aug 1834 - Hauled in one load of wheat & flax mowed & bound up wheat the remainder of the day. 10 Aug 1834 - SUNDAY: Bound up wheat the most of the day looks likely for a storm. 11 Aug 1834 - Bounded wheat in the AM. George & Jacob hoed corn. Rainy in the PM, thunder & lightning at night with heavy rain. Large quantities of grain got wet. 14 Aug 1834 - Got horse shod at Turner's. Mowed thistles on the pasture near Trufon. My self & geo worked on oats & wheat in PM. Wind N. 15 Aug 1834 - Bound Wheat clear & windy. 16 Aug 1834 - Drawed Henry Davis, juryman to Topsham (ME) Court. Jacob Barker came up. 17 Aug 1834 - SUNDAY: Hauled in four loadsof wheat. Looked likely for rain. Jacob Barker went home & carried Jane. 18 Aug 1834 - Was unwell with head ache. George & Jacob raked oats in AM. 19 Aug 1834 - Haulded in a oats in AM. Geo mowed Oats & Bailey. 21 Sep 1834 - Barton Anderson took cattle out of pasture. 16 Nov 1834 - Turned ram out to sheep.
