Ebenezer HAM & Col. William Garcelon Day Books (1835, 1836, 1837) Ebenezer Ham was living in Lewiston, ME when he wrote his diary; however, he has made a good personal record to many Lisbon & Webster, Maine. William Garcelon was also living in living in South Lewiston, ME. Lewiston Falls means the settlement both sides of the Androscoggin River near the present Gov Longley Bridge (formerly called the North Bridge). Where Lewiston Corner was we really do not know but we are working on finding the location. 24 Mar 1835 - Bought 17 gallons molasses of Nye & Harrington. 5 Apr 1835 - Record for The (Lewiston) Annual Town meeting in 1835: William Garcelon, Moderator; J M Frye, town clerk; S D Garcelon; R Rand; J Stanford, selectman, Assessors & Overeers of the Poor; E Ham, constable & collectors of taxes. Hired Geo Boobier to work 7 mos at $11 per month. 7 Apr 1835 - Hauled rocks in AM went to Mr Marston's & whet hand saw from there to S Pichard & setled for bridge timber. Snow fell last night. 8 Apr 1835 - Empted & filled leach tub, turned soy out, made work bench, cut wood. clear & pleasent. Wind SW. 9 Apr 1835 - Made a Stone drag, James made clothes horse. Boys cut wood. Pleasant wind W. 10 Apr 1835 - Went to capt Anderson got a piece of maple to make an axeltree Settled with Capt Anderson for pasturing cattle for three years past. Warm & pleasant wind SW. 11 Apr 1835 - Made axeltree, James made cart tongue, went to the corner with wagon, first time for the season. Warren (Ham) gave me a Calf which I fetched home, boys cut wood, very pleasent & clear. Wind SW. 12 Apr 1835 - SUNDAY: Pleasent for the season, white frost fast night, good sap day. Wind SW. 13 Apr 1835 - Went to J H Williams to get plain stocks made. Went to father's & Capt S Garcelon's got town order for $30. Got Home about 10 PM. Rainy and very bad traveling. Geo Boobier began work, cut wood. Wind SW. 14 Apr 1835 - Spilt wood in morning went to corner sold two hens & one big big bacon to Philips. James sold his colt to C Gorham for $67.50 to be paid in one year. Piled wood in PM. Cold & squally during the day, with little snow. Wind NW. 15 Apr 1835 - My self and boys dressed flax. Sold 316 ft seasoned boards to Joseph Ham rec'd $2.50. W N Ames came to my house. Got two company orders. Extremly cold froze very hard, very windy, but clear wind NW. 16 Apr 1835 - Hauled stumps & built fence between D W Graffam & Me. Fast day, some rainy with appearance of warm weather in the evening. Wind SW. 17 Apr 1835 - Hauled rocks in forenoon, went to Turner's got horse shod, went from there to the corner, broak wagon near Abel Davis, rode the remainder of the way with John Anderson, winrrowed six bushels wheat forseed. Geo & Herrick broak flax in PM. Very cold and windy, some snow in AM. Went off in course of the day. The ground froze very hard at night. Wind N. 18 APr 1835 - Went to Winslow Ames to the election of Company officers: Winslow N Ames was chosen Capt; Josiah S Clough, Lieut; Hosea Fuller, Ensign. Went from there to Monmouth (ME) to attend the election in Lieut Foxes' Company. Rufus Marston had 31 votes, Charles T Fox 29, and Thos C Kimbal 1 vote. By this Rufus Marston was chosen Capt by one majority. Took tea with Lieut Fox. Went to Capt Higgins and tarried all night. Got some scions of Capt Higgins. Weather a little more moderate through the day, but cold & windy at night. Wind N. Boys broak flax and finished. 19 Apr 1835 - SUNDAY: Came from Monmouth (ME), Got home about noon - Cold with the appearance of a storm. Wind SE. Begins to snow about five Oclock PM. 20 Apr 1835 - Made an axeltree to wagon in AM, went to the corner and drawed Juror, Isaac Tarr was drawn for Apr term. Warmen' raining towards night. Got wet coming home. Wind N. 21 Apr 1835 - Went to mill in AM. Col (William) Garcelon came to my house & took dinner. Run the line between me & Brackett Marston, staked the line & marked trees through the woods. Paid Col Garcelon twenty five cents for his services as surveyer. Heard frogs at night first for the season. Has the appearance of snow in the PM cold & back for the season hay scarce. 22 Apr 1835 - Repaired cart body & wheels in AM. Went to S Turner's & took shoes off oxen got black smith work done. Served veniue on Isaac Tarr. Went to John Pettengills & got large auger very bad traveling Wind NE. Pedton stayed at my house at night, charged him 67 cts. 23 Apr 1835 - George came to my house, plowed the drans found port about 8 in ches below the surface. Bored timber for Aquadue - Warren (Ham) & his wife came to my house in AM. I went to the corner in the evening. Carried Warren's (Ham) wife home. Made prisoner of James Hewey feathed him as far as Elder Coles -Went back to the corner got his taxes & cost - Cold and windy. Wind N. I Rode Farnham's as far as John Merrills. 24 Apr 1835 - John Pettengill came to my house & took breakfast. Boreed timber in AM. Boys dry drain in PM. Repaired yard fence & bars several snow squals in the course of the day - very windy & cold wind N. 25 Apr 1835 - My self & boys sawed & spit wood before breakfast. laged the sheep in in AM. Boys sawed wood all day. Split wood and done the "CHORES" in PM. Capt W N Ames was at my house & got sergeants warrant for Nelson Ham. Moses Anderson & Nancy were at my house in PM. Had a likely calf from the Day cow. Cloudy with some snow in the PM. & evening wind S. 26 Apr 1835 - SUNDAY: Went to meeting in AM, Deacon Golder preached. Cloudy Wind S. 27 Apr 1835 - My self and boys sawed & split wood most of the day. Warren & Capt Anderson at my house in AM. I went to the mill to wards night got returns from Leeds of Election of officers also requst from E K Prescott requsting discharge. Pleasent and clear during the day to wards night has the appearance of a storm. Wind SW. 28 Apr 1835 - Went to Mill in the AM. Boys hauled rocks, commenced snowing about 9 Oclock in AM, very severe storm during the day with high wind from East. Eleazer Smith got badly hurt by the door. I went after the doctor. I found him at Samuel Turner's. It was very mudy & weat. 29 Apr 1835 - Isaac Thompson blowed rocks for me in AM, went to the Corner & got drill harpened. Geo hauled dirt into field in PM. Nathaniel & Wentworth ford answer of my to ??? sent ??? warrant to Lieut Fox. 30 Apr 1835 - Sold 125 clapboards to Deacon W Woodard. Went to Nathaniel Jordan's house, with Stephen Foss and appraised stock for N & T Jordan. Boys hauled dirt into old cellar. Had nine pigs. Came pleasent weather. Saw Josiah Straw sowing wheat first for the season. Wind NW & N. 1 May 1835 - Blowed rocks in AM. Isaac C Thompson helped me. Went to the corner in PM. Boys dig drain. Cool wind NW. 2 May 1835 - My self & boys layed down aquaduct in AM. Went to the corner and bought horse at auction of S Manning at $76.32. An illegal school meeting at four O'clock PM. 3 May 1835 - SUNDAY: I was sick with head ache during the day. 4 May 1835 - Worked on aquaduct myself. George, Jacob, & Herrick harrowed wheat ground. I went to the corner in the evening, a storm commenced. 5 May 1835 - Moved the watering trough in AM. Went to training in PM. Some rain fell last night and it continues overcast & stormy until night. Wind SE. 6 May 1835 - My self & boys hewed & mortised post in AM, sold hay to V Estes. Mended fence in PM. Rainy & weat but little sowing done in this town. 7 May 1835 - Repaired old fence in AM, hauled rocks in PM. Elder Cole & wife & Mrs Field were at my house at tea. Sold 300# of hay to John March. Cool, wind NW. 8 May 1835 - Sowed & plaster in AM. Went to the corner to draw juryman, Cyrus Barker Jr was drawn. Boys harrowed wheat ground. Herrick Ham quit work for me. Winnowed seed- Josiah Barker came from Brunswick (ME). 9 May 1835 - Sowed three bushels wheat, William B Jordan came to my house in evening. Barker colt fetch to pasture. 10 May 1835 - SUNDAY: Was at home all day. Seth Fuller came to my house. Warren (Ham) & wife in evening and brought fresh fish. 11 May 1835 - Mended fence around pasture near T????. Jacob cut George's hand with axe. Went to James Carville and from there to father's. Pleasent and agreeable weather. Wind SW. 12 May 1835 - Was at home. James Carville helped me engraft apple trees in AM. Boys harrowed wheat ground. Jonathan Rowe died last Sunday, was buried today. I went to the corner in the evening - Pleasant & growing weather. Wind SW. 13 May 1835 - I killed a calf in the morning. Turned sheep & young cattle to pasture. Went to the corner at noon. Plowed turnip yard and sowed wheat & barley. Clear & pleasant. 14 May 1835 - Sowed to bushel of wheat and one bushel barley. George Boobier/Bubier went home at noon. Some rainy in PM. S D Garcelon took valuation. Sow brought eight "PIGS". 15 May 1835 - Went to mill, rainy and cold durning the day. Wind NE. 16 May 1835 - Drove young cattle to the pasture. Hauled rocks in PM. School was holden in our den at four O'Clock PM. Mr Mitchell chosen agent. Cold & squstry. Wind NW. 17 May 1835 - SUNDAY: At home in AM. Went to see George Boobier/Bubier in PM. Cold an squally in afternoon. Wind NW. 18 May 1835 - Helped Capt Anderson break up with two yoak of oxen came and loaded two carts with manure. Wrote a letter to A B Thompson in evening. Clear Windy & cool. Wind NW. Jacob Barker's colt turned to pasture. 19 May 1835 - Hauled twenty three loads manure, Capt Anderson helped me. I gilded four calves & five pigs. Pleasant wind S. Geo Boobier/Bubier came to my house. 20 May 1835 - Hauled eighteen loads dung. Reed Mitchell worked for me. Geo & Jacob went after father's oxen. Warm & plowing weather. 21 May 1835 - Plowed green swod, Capt Anderson helped me. Warm & pleasant Wind West. 22 May 1835 - Plowed green sword Capt Anderson worked for me. Pleasant. 23 May 1835 - Plowed Green sword & old ground, I acollav? in PM. Pleasant & clear. 24 May 1835 - SUNDAY: Went to the pasture and salted sheep & cattle. P.M. Garcelon & wife were at my house. Went to father's in the evening & drove staight home. Very pleasant & growing weather. 25 May 1835 - Sold 500# hay to B Cole. Harrowed corn ground with horses & oxen. Very pleasant. Small shower at night with thunder & lightning. 26 May 1835 - Harrowed corn ground in AM with horses & oxen of unowned corn ground in PM. 27 May 1835 - Planted corn first for the season. Read & John Mitchell & Nelson Ham helped me. Mr (Sumner?) Marston raised his house in PM. 28 May 1835 - Planted corn in AM & hauled rocks & dug stumps in garden in PM. Very warm & growing weather. Trees begin to blossom. 29 May 1835 - Plowed the garden and mended fence. Fine shower of Rain. 30 May 1835 - Planted sweet corn in garden, sowed onions, planted a few potatoes in the garden. 31 May 1835 - SUNDAY: Was at home most of the day, father & mother came to my house. My wife was taken violently sick with the cholic. Sent for Doctor Gorham. 1 June 1835 - Hauled dung for potatoes, went to the corner at noon & to Seth Fuller's store. My wife continues sick, Doct Gorham was at my house in evening. 2 June 1835 - Hauled dung in AM, began to plow for potatoes in PM. Warm & Dry. Jacob went to Lisbon (ME) after Mrs Barker. 3 June 1835 - Plowed for potatoes, had Capt Anderson's oxen in sowed beets, parsnips & carrots. At noon pleasant with signs of rain. 4 June 1835 - Plowed the last potatoes this season. Sewed plaster on wheat. Winter Jordan came to my house. Warm & Dry. 5 June 1835 - Rainy in the morning, very warm & suttry having ground for potatoes. Planted some potatoes in PM. Doct Gorham was at my house. 6 June 1835 - Planted potatoes in AM. Went to help Samuel Litchfield raise James Carville's barn. Father, mother, Warren (Ham) & his wife were all at my house at dinner. Pleasant & warm. 7 June 1835 - SUNDAY: Was at home in AM. Thos & Sam'l? B Jordan came to my house. Went to temperance meeting in PM. Alonzo Garcelon delivered discourse on temperance at South meeting house. It was pleasant but cool at night. 8 June 1835 -I planned potatoes George & Jacob hauled manure, went to the corner in evening. 9 June 1835 - Planted potatoes, Geo worked on the road with two oxen. Thomas Hart was at my house to dinner. 10 June 1835 - Planted potatoes in AM. George worked on the road, began to rain about 11 o'Clock in AM wind E. Washed sheep in PM. Capt S Cutler bought a pig of me. 11 June 1835 - Planted potatoes, went to fathers & got four bushels potatoes. 12 June 1835 - Planted potatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, & ruta-baga. Finished planting. Very warm & growing weather. 13 June 1835 - Built board fence round field at the other place bled oxen. 14 June 1835 - SUNDAY: Was at home morning of the day. Jacob Barker came to my house. Cool & cloudy. 15 June 1835 - Shear'd sheep, David Davis helped me, Geo & Jacob built board fence. 16 June 1835 - Went of the pasture and finished fence, but plaster & ashes on corn. Warm eat the corn basls. 17 June 1835 - Built wall, B Randell helped me, a little rain in morning. 18 June 1835 - Built wall in AM, Benja. Randell helped me. 19 June 1835 - Hoed corn, first hoeing this season, a small shower at noon began to rain about five PM. Ground quite dry and rain much needed. Wind SE. Heavey fall of rain at night with high wind, thunder & lighning. 20 June 1835 - Cleared out the cellar in AM. Worked on the road in PM. Cool with high wind from NW. 21 June 1835 - SUNDAY: I was at home untill evening. Mr Garcelon came to my house to dinner. William R True & Temple Tibbetts came to the falls in the evening. 22 June 1835 - Hoed corn, S D Rand & William B Colson/Courson worked for me until five PM, began to rain about five PM. 23 June 1835 - Worked on the road in AM, harrowed, hoed corn in PM Cool & windy. 24 June 1835 - Hoed corn in AM hoed corn & potatoes in garden in PM. 25 June 1835 - Went to Bowdoinham (ME) to Univeralist Convention, Rev Gardiner, preached in AM from Joshua 1 & 2, Rev Whittemore of Cambridge Pool preached in PM. 26 June 1835 - Sawed wood for school house, went to corner & got house shod. 27 June 1835 - Capt Anderson turned yoak two year old steer in my pasture & helped me after seven lambs, cut wood in PM. Over cart and some rainy towards night. Ady Adams was at my house in afternoon. 28 June 1835 - SUNDAY: Was at home in AM went to P.M. Garcelon in PM. Carried Martha Ann Barker home & brought Mrs Barker home. FOggy & overcast weather, fine shower at night. 29 June 1835 - I wrote a letter to Seward before breakfast, sent by J Lowell. I fixed cart wheels in PM. Shower in PM with thunder & lightning. Geo began to hoe potatoes. 30 June 1835 - Harrowed among corn, painted cart wheels, went to Samuel Dill and bought three lambs. Geo hoed corn. 1 Jul 1835 - Went to Lisbon Factory, sold 15 bushels of oats to N Garrish. Cool with NW. Charles Read turned oxen in pasture. 2 Jul 1835 - Went to Samuel Dill and got three lambs. Harrowed among corn & killed lambs. Geo hoed corn. 3 Jul 1835 - Went to Brunswick (ME) to market. 4 Sat 1835 - Went to Greene (ME) Mr Holmes delivered the address on Temperance. Capt Lamb performed military duty with his company. Serve came to my house aged toward all night. Warm & Pleasant. We ran from the bank of the river towards the new road 59 rods to a stake which we assigned for Mary Stagpole's to build from that stake towards the new road 92 rods to a stake which we assigned for John Merrill to build from that stake to the new road which we assigned for Mary Stagpole which is 37 rods, then Mary Stagpole agreed to build from the bank to the water, then John agreed to build from the edge of the water into the water as far as ne?pary? [S H Read] 14 May 1837 - Turned 21 sheep & 18 lambs into pasture be loning to self & 12 sheep & 8 lambs belonging to Mrs Barker making in all 43 sheep & 26 lambs. 6 Jul 1837 - To William Garcelon & James Mitchell two the fence views of Lewiston, we the subscribers here by request you to make a division of the fence on the line between our land, begining at the most Southeasterly corner of land owned by Rushworth Ficket, thence Southwest on the line of our land to land of Joseph Chadbournd and assign to each of us our several half to build and keep in repair here after.
