Senator Fernald was born in West Poland, Maine, April 26, 1858, the son of James H. and Betsey (Libby) Fernald. The senator states his business or profession is farmer and corn packer, and parenthetically, United States Senator. Senator Fernald held various town and county offices and in 1897- 98 was a member of the Maine House of Representatives; State Senator 1899-02, and in 1909-10 was Governor of Maine. He became a member of the U. S. Senate in 1918. In 1878 he married Annie A. Keene. Children: James H., born 1880; Mellie H., born 1884.
