He lived for years in an old house in Webster. Learned in law, in science, in literature, speaking five languages, a graceful writer and artist, he chose to live in obscurity. He passed his time in reading and writing fragments of local history, verses, philosophical disquisitions, genealogies, etc. He became a tall, old man, with bald head, gray beard, and refined face, who dressed neatly, and avoided meat, butter, and grease as food. His last request was that his death should be unnoticed, no plate to decorate his coffin , and his age not be carved on his grave-stone. We truely are indebted to his work for much of value of this publication. Bryent wrote in his diary on 27 June 1883, "(My sister, Mary Bryent Wiley) is very anxious that I should give her my books of which I think about five hundred volumes, many newspapers, and manuscripts and some curiosities all which I desire to have preserved for reference and examination and not when I am gone to have them trundled away to a junk shop or lost and destroyed as such treasures too often are in the changes of the future."
