There are three versions as to how he came there. (a) He was a slave to a Mr Darling, who was shipwrecked off Maine and Black Ben saved his master and was given his liberty and horse Island as his reward. (b) As a slave, his mother hid him for a number of years. Although she was whipped to reveal where her child was, she kept her secret, while Ben as a boy hid under a bed observed the whipping without a sound, but with tears. Later, his mother sent her child north and some say came with him. (c) Capt Abner Johnson of Phippsburg said Ben was brought to Maine from the South. All three acounts note he came to Maine in his youth, He was sturdy, industrious and and had many staunch friends. Most hold to the shipwreck story, but some say a Capt Rodick brought him to Horse. Horse Island is East of Great Island near Phippsburg, Me On 5 Jul 1794, county records state William conveyed to Ben (Darling) (both of Georgetown), an Island, east of New Meadows Island, joining the Mainland, 40 acres or so, for 15 pounds. On 26 Mar 1829, Ben (Darling) conveyed the island to his son, Isaac. Isaac conveyed the Island to Joseph Perry on 1 Apr 1847. Benjamin Darling reportedly married a white woman, Sarah Proverbs. [the Liberty Standard of Hallowell ME said she was 87y old when she died issue 11 Jan 1844] He settled on the West Bowdoinham plantation in 1780, and built the Davis- Bryent place in 1791. This has been stated to be the oldest house in Sabattus, ME, now (1990) owned by Ed Gardner Jr on the Crowley Rd, Sabbattus, ME. Jesse was of large stature, muscular strength and powers of endurance made him admirably fit for a pioneer. However early in the spring of 1792, upon the representation of doctors Jones, Lowther, and Gross his leg amputated above the knee. This was in consequence of a wound he had recieved in the battle of Lexington, MA. It was at this battle which was commanded by Capt Davis, a relative of his, who gave the famous order, "fire, for God's sake fire!" In the evening of same day his leg was amputated, he spoke to an attendant, Deacon Samuel Hinkley, he found the bed saturated with blood. The arteries had not been proper ty secured. Jesse Davis received no help from the doctor who was present but who was overcome by the too free use of spirtuous liquor. Jesse he died from loss of blood the evening of the same day his leg was taken off. Upon the death of Dr Davies about the same time , the agreement was left incomplete on the part of both. An honorable act was performed by Joshua Davies, who had succesded to the estate of Dr Davies in confirming the agreement by conveyance of the property memtioned to the widow and children of his brother Jesse Davies. As a boy he realised a considerable sum from trapping and hunting alond the shores of the Sabattus River. He went on a voyage under the late Capt Nathaniel Eames to the West Indies and the Spanish Main. Jonathan Davis was an occ' Real Estate Broker, m(1) Rebecca Larrabee at Brunswick, ME, d 16 Feb 1839 ae 53y 3m, m(2) 19 Dec 1844, Jane Baker b 1799 of Lisbon, ME. He became quite wealthy in real estate. He gave the money for the bell for Hathorn Hall at Bates College, Lewiston, ME. On his stone it is written: "A lover of his country standing by her with the vigor of youth in the great Rebellion, He lived to know and practice truth which was the secret of his success." Benjamin D Bryent wrote in this diary "Jesse Davis paid $1600 to have the epitaph carved for his father. Why was (Jonathan) so honorably noticed in this epitaph in connection with the `great Rebellion', is not apparent unless in a negative sense, that he was not a rebel and he was not a rebel only because to been one would have been adverse to his material personal interest. Then his `suc cess' and the `secret' thereof, that is `to practice truth' are mere assumptions as his only success was the devotion of a long life to the accumulation of a fortune of $109,000, in many intances by indirect, oppressive and unscrupulous means, as many persons with whom he had business intercourse have declared his declaration under oath to the assessors of Webster, ME that he had only $1000 money at interest when it was known that he had more than that sum, disproves the statement in his epitaph, which is creditable neigher to the father for the act nor to the son for the statement in the epitaph." Mr Benjamin Bryent was well know for his strong statements. When one of his neighbors was burnt out the town took up an collection and Jonathan Bryent gave one bag of white beans. Benjamin D Bryent never forgot or forgave his uncle, Jonathan Davis. Bryent had let his own personal views cloud his writing. Bryent was angree with Jonathan because he felt that he should have done more. We do not know which neighbor who was burnt out; however, Eloise M Jordan, who wrote in an article for the Journal, writes perhaps a diffi rent account of the same story. "Real Neighbors" "When Ben Dole Bryant's barn burned down in 1831, his neighbors came to his assistance with a subscribtion to help rebuild it. The subscription read: Whereas an unforfunate case has taken place occcurred by the fire upon our neighbor and townsman B D Bryant Esq as follows the loss of his barn, hay, grain and one ox. Whatever they think nessessary in the case was offered, from Jonathan Davis: ten dollars to 3/8 of a ton of hay from William Buckman. It is likely that B D Bryent at age 16 years remember the story incorrectly, or the informa tion which came from the other side of the family was incor rect?
