Elisha Keene III at age ten  yrs moved to Danville, ME with his parents. They bought the tavern which was  started by Jacob Hawes Read at Goff's Corner. Elisha attended Greene &  Danville schools. He became a tradesman establishing a dry goods business located  in the old brick building on the westerly corner of Court and North Main Street.  Later he sold out his business and ran a grocery business in Danville. He  opened a store also in Lewiston at the corner of Main & Lincoln St, Lewiston, ME.  The Lewiston store was owned by his mother-in-law, Mrs A A Tracy. Aside his  business actives he had joined the Danville Artillery Co in 1838 and served as a  junior officer under Capt Alfred Stetson. Mr Crowley is said to have slaughtered more oxen than  any man in all his region.... The Knight of Cleaver declares that  Mr Jordan's oxen weighed as follows: Dressed wt 2930 #; beef 2440  #; hides 250#; tallow 240#. The Knight avers stated "I had been  in business fifty years and have fed beef to Bowdoin students for  half a centry, but I never saw so good beef slaughtered in Maine"  The Knight is soon to leave on a trip to California.
