He had a family of  fifteen children, one of whom, Joseph, remained upon the old  homestead. It is related of him that one night at dusk he went  out to feed his pigs and found a bear in the pen with the pig in  his arms. Bruin jumped out and departed with his prize. In 1873 Omar  D Potter owned ο- 3  Šthe land and only the cellar hole of Simmons' house remain.  Simmons was of large stature and had great muscular power. He served five years with  the American army in the War of the Revolution. He possessed the literary  culture then required for school-teachers.
