Thirty miles south-south-west of Houlton. On European & North American Railroad.
Settled by Charles Gellerson in 1830, from Brighton, Me. Organized in 1840.
Named in honor of George Bancroft, the historian. Population-1860, 304; 1870,
177; 1880, 220. Valuation, 1860-Polls, 63; Estates, $23,810; 1870-Polls, 54;
Estates, $35,093; 1880-Polls, 58; Estates, $48,961.

  Assessors-George A. Smart, John Hamilton, Daniel Morrisy.
