Fifty miles N. W. of Houlton. First settled in 1833 by Thomas Goss of Danville, Me., followed in 1835 by John Knowlen. In 1838-9, several families from Oldtown, Me., moved in. The first goods were brought into the place in 1838, by Joseph Pollard from Oldtown, hauling five tons for a distance of twenty miles, on hand-sleds, there being no roads completed until 1841. Roswell T. Knowlen was the first child born in the town. On stage-line from Patten to Ashland. Once called No. 10, Range 5. Incorporated March 21, 1839. Population-1860, 190; 1870, 169; 1880, 212.
