Monhegan Island, Lincoln Co., Maine 1837 Census 1837 Census of Monhegan Island, Lincoln Co., Maine Monhegan Island is situated nine miles southeast from Pemaquid Point Light, and sixteen miles from Boothbay Harbor. It is about 1 mile wide and 2.5 miles long. In 1605, it was named Isle St. George by George Waymouth; Isle La Nef by Champlain in 1606. Monhegan was the rendezvous of the Popham Colony in 1607. They landed and held a Thanksgiving Service for their safe arrival, under the cross which had been there erected by George Waymouth.
