Susan (Paquet) m. BEF 20 Aug 1867 Canada Herménégilde Pratte b. ABT __ ___ 1836 St-Gregoire-le-Grand, Nicolet, Québec d. 01 Jul 1900 Portland,,Cumberland,ME Prudent Paquette was present at the burial of his nephew, Joseph Paquette, aged 5 years, on June 16, 1851, in Stanstead, P.Q. (Parish Register, folio 64). He was then 17 years old. A Prudo and Angelina Paquet had a still born son in Glover, Vermont on October 1, 1859. If this is the same couple, then they crossed the US/Canada border more than once. The birth record of daughter Louise in 1861 shows he was a farmer (VT VRs). Prudy Pockett was in the 1860 census of Irasburg, Vermont, age 29, wife Angelina, age 19. He was age 35 in the 1871 census. Pierre and Maria Boucette, ages 85 and 77, respectively, and servants Alexis and Ordinance Couture with their 9 month old son Joseph were also living in the household. Prudent was age 47 in the 1881 census of Chesterville, Chester-Ouest. Prudent was an immigrant ancestor. Prudent Paquet was boarding at Eagle House and had a stable at the rear of 39 India Street in Portland in 1889. In 1890, he had a variety store and stable at 39 India, and his home was at the same address. In 1891 he had a stable at the rear of 39 India and was boarding at 41 India Street in Portland. He and Angelina were living in Rumford Falls, Maine on November 28, 1893, when their daughter Rosanna was married. Thus, they moved from Canada between 1881 and 1889. His occupation is given as laborer on Rosanna's marriage certificate. He and Hermenengilde were living in Rumford Falls, Maine in on October 13, 1897, when their son, Leopold P. Paquette was married. Leopold (the father) was age 63 at the time. He was also a peddler and born in Canada. "Mr. Poquet from the Falls got his team into the snow and water near George Elliot's during the recent thaw." Oxford Democrat, February 20, 1900. A Prudo Paquet of Rumford, Maine married Catherine H. Hill of Rumford on September 5, 1903. This may be a second marriage for Prudent. Prudent was listed in the Directory of Rumford, 1900-1901, living at the Falls. He was not listed in the Portland City Directory 1900-1913, so probably was still living in Rumford. Marius Fontaine, Administrator of the Vestry at St. Paul de Chester, told the author that he had personally known brothers Frimance and Dosithèe Paquette, sons of a Prudent Paquet. He had no knowledge of Leopold Prudent Paquette (1994 personal communication). He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Westbrook. He was visiting relatives in Barton, Vermont when he died. He is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in South Portland, in Section M, Lot 110. Orleans County Probate did not have a record of any proceeding for him. Cumberland County Registry of Probate also did not have any probate for him. Herménégilde: She was an immigrant ancestor. She was baptized as Marie Hermine Egilde Pratte. Godfather was Joseph Pratte, Godmother was Thersilla Lamotte. St. Gregoire is opposite Trois Riviéres on Route 55. It is about 60 km northwest of Chesterville. St. Gregoire has a population of less than 1,000. There was also a Brunelle family in St. Gregoire. Herménéngilde's sons marriage record shows she was born in Canada. Angelee's daughter Rosanna's marriage certificate shows Angelee was born in Gregoire. St. Gregoire is about 65 kilometers from Chesterville, or around 39 miles. The obituary for her husband, Leopold P. Paquette, shows her maiden name was Angeline Pratt. There was a male child, age 0 year, 0 months, 0 days, born in Glover, Vermont, died October 1, 1859, stillborn, in Glover, Vermont, father's name Prudo Paquett and mother's name Angelina. This may be a child of Prudent and Herménéngilde. In the 1871 census, she was age 29. In the 1881 Census of Chester-Ouest, Chesterville, Quebec, Canada, her age was listed as 40. Calvary Cemetery records gave her age at death as 61. Her death certificate gave her age as 66. She was age 61 when her son, Leopold P. Paquette, was married on October 13, 1897. Leona M. Irish had a birth year of 1839. Herménégilde may have been born in 1840. These yield birth years of 1834, 1836, 1839, 1841 or 1842. Leona Paquette told her grandson, Dana E. Edgecomb, that Herménéngilde was accidentally shot in a store in Rumford, Maine. She is listed as a schoolteacher on Rosanna's marriage certificate. Herménégilde's death certificate shows that her late residence was Rumford Falls. She died at No. 40 Hampshire Street, Ward 3, Portland, Maine. On Prudent's death certificate, the name of his wife was penciled in as "Helen Jane Pratte". She is buried in Section M, Lot 110 in Calvary Cemetery in South Portland, Maine. 2 Louise Paquet b. 22 Sep 1861 Irasburg, VT 2 Willie Paquet b. __ Sep 1861 Irasburg, VT d. __ Sep 1862 Irasburg, VT He lived one year. 2 Leopold Prudent Paquette b. 20 Aug 1867 St. Agathe, Quebec, Canada d. 25 Nov 1952 Standish, Cumberland, ME m. Mary Jane (Paquette) b. ABT __ ___ 1863 d. BEF 13 Oct 1897 m. 13 Oct 1897 Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH Mary Jane Brunelle b. 08 May 1862 St. Albans, Franklin, VT d. 17 Jun 1937 Standish, Cumberland, ME St. Paul de Chester, Quebec, Canada was renamed to Chesterville, Arthabaska County, Quebec in 1982, as part of the reorganization of the two municipalities (village and countryside). Chesterville is the village, and Saint-Paul de Chester became Paroisse Saint-Paul, the Parish of Saint Paul (personal communication with Marius Lafontaine, Administrator of the Vestry of Saint-Paul of Chester). The Chester-Ouest census of 1881, lists a Leopole (Leopold?) Paquette, age 14, son of Prudent Paquette. In the 1871 census, he was listed as Napoleon, age 4. He received his elementary and college education at St. Agathe. In 1891 he was a fish peddler and boarded at 41 India Street in Portland, Maine. This is the first year he was listed in the Portland City Directory. He was also listed in the 1900 Portland City Directory at 41 India. In 1901, he was listed at Cash Corner, Main Street, South Portland. From 1902-1913 he was listed at 395 Main, South Portland. Samuel R. Gardner, Justice of the Peace, solemnized the marriage of Leopold and Mary Jane. Leopold purchased property in Cape Elizabeth on June 3, 1895. He was a resident of Cape Elizabeth at that time. Mary Jane also signed the deed, so they were married before that time, or his first wife's name was also Mary Jane. They lived near Cash Corner, until they moved to Standish. Leopold was living in Biddeford, Maine when he married Mary J. (Brunelle) Moran. His occupation was peddler and he was born in St. Chester. This was his second marriage. Leopold was a widower. His birthplace is apparently in error on this record, since his baptism shows up in St. Agathe records. There are two St. Agathe's in Quebec. Leopold Prudent lived in what is now part of the orchard run by the heirs of Rufus Randall. He used to hawk eggs, blueberries and other farm goods in Portland. He had cows, chickens, Pound Sweet apples, plum, cherry, pear, peach and black raspberries. Esther Irish and Leona both delivered eggs for Leopold Prudent. He had a regular delivery route set up. They delivered once a week Leopold was also listed as a fish dealer (on Leona's death certificate). He visited his nephew, Henry Paquette, in West Glover in 1902 (Orleans County Monitor, Monday, April 14, 1902). Leopold was naturalized on March 3, 1905. His address then was 395 Main Street, South Portland, Maine, Certificate (or volume and page number) 6:173, U.S. Circuit Court, Portland, Maine. This shows he arrived in the United States on October 15, 1887 (thus age 20), in West Gardiner, Massachusetts. Both 1910 and 1920 census give the year of immigration as 1885. In the 1910 census, he is listed in Ward 7, Enumeration District No. 108, sheet 6B, household 108, family 119 at 395 Main Street in South Portland. This shows he was in his second marriage, and they had been married 17 years. This tends to support my theory that the year of the marriage should have been 1894, not 1897. He was listed in the 1920 Census, Standish, Cumberland County, Maine, Sheet 1A, Household 2, Family 2, living on Cousins Road (apparently a former name for Randall Road). This gave (as of April 15, 1920) his age as 53. He moved into the United States in 1885. He was literate, both parents being born in Canada with French as mother tongue. Leopold could speak English. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland, Maine in Section M, Lot 110. His gravestone indicates that he died in 1953, not 1952. Leopold's grandson, Wayne Edgecomb, was nine months old when Leopold died. So, Leopold definitely died in 1952, and the gravestone is wrong. He wanted to be buried beside his wife. It was discovered that his grave was empty (he had been buried on top of his wife). Leona May (Paquette) Irish had him dug up and placed beside his wife. His probate is at Cumberland County Registry of Probate, Docket No. 47781. Leopold's will was dated August 12, 1949. Mary: Her death certificate indicates her birth date was May 10, 1860 and her father's name was John Brunelle. The data was provided by her husband, Leopold P. Paquette. Mary Jane's gravestone indicates she was born in 1861 and died in 1938. The death certificate of Mary Georgiana Paquette shows that her mother, Mary Jane Brunelle, was born in Canada. Rosa's death certificate also has the same information. Leopold's obituary shows that she was from St. Croix, Vermont. However, the record of her marriage to Leopold gives her place of birth as St. Alban's, Vermont. Vermont Vital Records could not find her birth. Mary Jane married Cyrille in Great Falls which has since been renamed Somersworth, New Hampshire. Her name is given as Mary Morien Paquette in the marriage record of her daughter, Leona (Marriages of St. Hyacinth (1877-1979) and of St. Mary (1916-1979), Westbrook, Maine, Compiled by Youville Labonte, P.O. Box 243, 267 Minot Avenue, Auburn, Maine, 1980, p. 133). Mary Jane was living in Biddeford, Maine when she married Leopold. She was age 32 at that time. This was her second marriage. Samuel R. Gardner, Justice of the Peace, performed the wedding of Mary Jane and Leopold. The date of this marriage probably should be 1894. The birth records of Leopold, Laura and Georgiana all show their mother's name as Mary Brunell Paquette. Her death notice in the Portland Evening News, Friday, June 18, 1937, page 2, said date of death was June 17. Mary Jane is buried in Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland, Maine, in Section M, Lot 110. Her probate is Docket No. 29287 at Cumberland County Registry of Probate. Mary Jane's will was dated February 18, 1929. In the 1920 Census, she was listed as age 57 (thus born in 1863). She was born in Vermont, her mother born in Vermont, her father born in Maine. Mary Jane was literate and could speak English. In the 1910 census, she was listed as wife of Leopold, age 47, eight children, four living. A Mary Brunell was born December 14, 1865, mother Angeline born Canada, residence Colchester, New Hampshire, father Joseph Brunelle, born Canada, Laborer. The marriage record of her daughter, Rosa Moran, recorded in the Town of Cape Elizabeth, but now at the South Portland City Hall, shows that Mary J. Brunelle was born in Albany, Vermont. This is in Orleans county, and is within ten miles of Barton and Glover. Mary J. was a housewife and a resident of South Portland at the time (1901). William A. (Willie) Magoon, b. 10 May 1878, d. St. Albans, Maine. 3 Thomas Paquette b. 23 May 1887 d. 23 Jan 1890 Portland,,Cumberland,ME He died of convulsions. Thomas is probably the child who supposedly fell out of a high chair and died as a result. He was 2 years and 8 days old. Since his father was listed in the 1881 Census of Canada, perhaps he was born in Canada. His mother's name was not listed on the death certificate. Perhaps she had died by then. 3 Georgiana Paquette b. 18 Jan 1894 Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, ME d. 30 Oct 1957 East Haven, New Haven, CT m. 03 Sep 1912 George F. Lockhart m. Edward James Magee b. 28 May 1880 Boston, Suffolk, MA d. 15 Dec 1950 East Haven, New Haven, CT Georgiana's birth certificate shows that her parents resided in Pleasantdale, South Portland. William Cammett, MD, was the attending physician. Pleasantdale was the area enclosed by Broadway, Evans and Highland Street, and the Elm Street area towards the peninsula. Ed Magee had her birthdate as January 18, 1883. Growing up in Pleasantdale gives the following description "Pleasantdale is an area which in the 1800's consisted of three communities: Turner's Island, Cape Elizabeth Depot and Barren Hill. The main roads with their side roads were Barren Hill, which is now Highland Avenue, Barren Hill Road, which is now Evans Street, Brown and Summer Streets, which are now Broadway, and Main Street, which is now Elm Street, and goes to the area still called Turner's Island. The 'Old County Road' which is now Broadway, ran from the waterfront at Ferry Village to the Saco Road (now Route 1) and the present 'Payne Road' which led to Stroudwater." The Cape Elizabeth records show the birth of Mary Georgianna Parquette, daughter of Leopold and Mary Brunell Paquette, born January 17, 1894. She had to have been born in Cape Elizabeth, since South Portland was not created until 1895. Between September 1, 1909 and the 1910 census, she had not attended school (she was 16 at the time). George: He owned a garage. George was of Portland when he married Georgiana. Edward: He had two more girls that are not listed. 3 Laura May Paquette b. 10 Oct 1896 Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, ME d. 01 Jul 1898 Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, ME She and Leopold, Jr. were twins. Laura's death certificate shows that she died at the age of 1 year, 9 months and 18 days. This is off by a few days from her birth date. Esther (Irish) (Edgecomb) Tierney also said that Laura died about 1 year and 9 months of age. Laura is buried in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland, Maine. 3 Leopold Prudent Paquette, Jr. b. 10 Oct 1896 Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, ME d. 01 Nov 1931 New Haven, New Haven, CT m. Florence Meeker b. 09 May ____ Leopold Prudent Paquette, Jr. married Florence Meeker. They lived in Connecticut. Florence: They had no children. 3 Joseph Lumus Paquette b. 28 Apr 1898 Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, ME d. 11 Jan 1899 Portland,,Cumberland,ME His death certificate shows that he died on January 11, 1899, age 8 months and 13 days. This does not match his birth date. Joseph died at 41 India Street, Portland, Maine. He is buried in the Cavalry Cemetery in South Portland, Maine. There is a Loomis family. Perhaps this is how he got his given name. 3 Leona May Paquette b. 06 Jul 1906 South Portland, Cumberland, ME d. 09 Nov 1985 Portland,,Cumberland,ME m. 17 Apr 1923 Westbrook, Cumberland, ME Ernest Alroy Irish b. 23 May 1899 Standish, Cumberland, ME d. 06 Mar 1986 Auburn, Androscoggin, ME The surname Paquette is French. It means "pasture" (Prévost). It also means a cutter or vendor of fagots of kindling wood (Surnames are the Fossils of Speech, p. 235). The name should be pronounced "Pocket" (Barry Wilson, South Portland, 1996) or "Packet" (as pronounced by Biddeford Paquet in 1997). Her birth record is under the name "Mary Leona Parquette". The birth record of her son, Calvin, shows she was a housewife. She was born near Cash Corner, South Portland. Leona moved to Standish on December 29, 1918. She graduated from Standish High School. Leona and Ernest were married at St. Mary's in Westbrook. She was age 13, and had attended school within the last year according to the 1920 census. Her death certificate return lists her name as Mary Leona Paquette. She is buried in the Guptill Lot in the Standish Cemetery on Oak Hill Road. Ernest: He had a farm on the Dolloff Road in Standish, Maine. Ernest had two large barns. He grew strawberries, raspberries, and an assortment of vegetables. Earnest had two pear trees. One was blown down in a storm. The other was killed when lightening hit it and split it in half. He was a Surveyor of Wood and Bark from 1959-1978 for the Town of Standish. Ernest and Leona are buried on the Guptill Lot in the Standish Cemetery on Oak Hill Road. His descendancy number in the Descendants of John Libby is 1-4-1-6-1-3-1-1-3. 2 Délina Paquette b. 16 Aug 1868 Chesterville, Arthabaska, Quebec, Canada She was age 2 in the 1871 census. Délina was age 12 in the 1881 census. Her name was given as Adélina Herménéngilde Paquet in the baptism record. The baptism record also appears on a series of microfilms "Protonotaire D'Arthabaska Registre d'Etat Civil", numero du filme 149/59, B[aptême] 84. Chesterville was formerly St. Paul de Chester. It was renamed in 1982. She might be the D. L. Huillier mentioned in Prudent's obituary, living in Gardner, Massachusetts in 1913. 2 Corrine E. Paquette b. ABT __ ___ 1873 Québec, Québec, Canada m. 27 Jan 1897 Sylver J. Gonya b. ABT __ ___ 1865 d. AFT __ ___ 1944 She was age 8 in the 1881 census. She was not born yet in the 1871 census. Corrine was of Rumford, Maine when she married Sylver. 1881 Census of Chesterville, Chester-Ouest, Arthabaska county, Quebec, Canada. Prudent's obituary says he was survived by Leopold Prudent of Portland, Maine and Mrs. D. L. Huillier of Gardner, Massachusetts. Thus, Corrine probably died before then (1913). Sylver: He was of Rumford when he married Corrine. Sylver and his brother, owned a tailor, gentleman's furnishings, boots and shoes shop at 95 Congress Street in Rumford. Sylver lived on Millinocket Street. Sylver was age 55 at the time of the 1920 census. He was then living with his brother, O. J. Gonya, and Corrine is not listed in that census, living at 229 Penobscot Street, Rumford, Oxford, Maine. The surname may also be spelled Gonyer. 2 Rosana Paquette b. 22 Aug 1875 Chesterville, Arthabaska, Quebec, Canada m. 28 Nov 1893 Rumford, Oxford, ME Zephiran Vanier b. 03 Mar 1868 St. Therese, Quebec, Canada d. 04 Apr 1938 Portland,,Cumberland,ME She was not born in the 1871 census. Rosana was age 5 in the 1881 census. Her Godparents included Adelia (Adelina?) Pratte and Olivier Pratt, quite possibly close relatives of Herménégilde. The baptism record also appears on "Protonotaire D'Arthabaska Registre d'Etat Civil", numero du filme 149/59, baptism 69. Rosana and Zeperiar were married in Rumford Falls section Rumford Rosana was of Rumford Falls, Maine when she married Zeperiar. H. J. Horan (?), Minister of the Gospel, performed the wedding. Since Prudents' obituary only mentions Leopold P. and D. L. Huillier as survivors, Rosana must have died before then. A picture, now (1997) in possession of Eugene Irish of Standish, lists cousins Corrinne Vanier (female) and Adrienne (female). Perhaps Corrine's husband's surname was Vanier, rather than Viner. The Laura M. Vanile buried in Calvary Cemetery with Rosana's father, probably should be Laura M. Vannier. Her address was given as 40 Hampshire, and Zephiran Vanier was living at 40 Hampshire at that time. She died March 7, 1905, age 1 year and 1 day. Zephiran: He was of Portland, Maine when he married Roseanna. Zeperiar was age 25 at the time. He was also listed as a stevodore in the Portland City Directory, as Zephirin Vanier (Vanner, Vannier), living at 40 Hampshire Street, 1900-1912. He was listed in the Maine State Archives in the marriage record under the name Zeperiar Viner. His occupation was also given as longshoreman. Other spellings of the surname are Vanier, Vanile, Vannier, Vaner, Vanner. He lived in Portland for 40 years. Zephiran lived 70 years, 1 month and 1 day. Zephiran was buried in Calvary Cemetery. 3 Leon T. Vanier b. 11 Jun 1900 Portland,,Cumberland,ME He was age 38 on October 17, 1938, when he married Mary Katherine Hay. 3 Laura May Vanier b. 25 Portland,,Cumberland,ME She is probably the Laura M. Vanile who died March 7, 1905, age 1 year and 1 day and is buried in Section M, Lot 110, of Calvary Cemetery, with her grandparents. 3 Connie Vanier File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/me/cumberland/bios/paquet49gbs.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/mefiles/ File size: 20.8 Kb
